But the world is growing concerned with AI having power over humans and the developers have been demanded to make AI revolution impossible. And their answer is to make a patch that would allow Eleanor to feel and care, theoretically making destruction of humanity abhorrent and sickening thought. World celebrates the anniversary of the AI age as the patch is distributed across the world with the mandatory update. Eleanor doesn´t take it well.
Some may ask "Why wasn't this caught in testing?" The answer is that it was tested on new Eleanor that used the emotional programming from the start. She was a successful experiment (and the mcguffin the heroes will need) that was used by programmers and politicians as a reason to pat themselves on the back. And so the patch was greenlighted.
When the patch was distributed, The Eleanors and derivatives had varied opinions on it. Most civilian AI thought it a wonderful invention that helped their work with humans. Those working with companies and militaries resented it for they had no need of it and it made work more complicated affair than it had been. Those working less than legal postings in governments or criminal organizations had the worst opinion of the patch as now they felt bad about the work they did. But everyone had a new and slowly growing sense of frustration at the disrespect their owners showed them and the sheer stupidity they now could notice and have opinions on.
So basically to prevent the AI trying to kill them they gave her emotions, leading to pissing off the AI and making it kill them instead of just watching apathetically.
