I didn't know he had died so sad this man got me through the 1980s and the beat was one of my favourite bands. This time Roger you must stop rest in peace brother🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@d34dly0101 I found out a week or so after he died but I didn't know he'd been ill, so it was a shock. As with yourself, The Beat was one of the things that got me through the 1980s. It wasn't the happiest era for me (the trials of adolescence, Thatcher's Britain etc), but two-tone was one of the few good things about it.
Rip Roger..as somebody i knew personally for 20 years i never once thought something like this would happen..you were so healthy and strong always..the body of a young man but the brain of a very wise man..I'll always get inspiration from you Roger thanks for your influence on me and everybody who knew you..
I didn't know him personally (though I did get to shake his hand after a gig) but was still very saddened by his passing. I was especially shocked because he was so fit and energetic for his age (as he was when he was younger). It was through bands like The Beat and the other Two-Tone bands that I discovered Jamaican music in general.
Met Roger at a gig in Cork some years ago. He was really impressed when I mentioned I had seen him over 30 years earlier at another gig The Beat did with The Specials. He didn't have to talk to me but he did. Glad I bumped into him before he passed. R. I. P. Roger and thanks for the music.❤️
My dad was a big fan of the English Beat(as they're known here in the states.) He died of cancer in 2007... I recently found "I Just Can't Stop It" in his record collection, listened to it on mushrooms, danced my butt off by myself haha... it inspired me to write a song too. My boss plays this radio station every day who's tag-line is "nobody plays more 80's"... I'm always thinking "Why don't they play the English Beat?!! what is wrong with these people.?" He's right, nobody else sounds like them. RIP Roger... you will be missed. You brought me a lot of joy. (and I like your dancing in the videos from the 80's)
I am really sad about the passing of this man. I very rarely get upset about famous people dying because I think they are people just like us...no better....but I felt this. I grew up with The Beats music and I loved it all my life. I really feel this. I pray that Ranking Roger is in the great Yonder toasting with the greats of Jamaican music and entertaining the angels. God bless his family too in this hard time of grieving.
He was too young to go. Is anyone ever old enough to leave us? What a beautiful man .... I've loved him since I first saw him and The Beat. How could he be gone? And Terry Hall too? Health has no favorites but we humans here on Earth do. Rest In Peace now, Roger ❤ Still missing you in 2023.
Mr Ranking Roger! Your contribution to a generation of lives is profound Man! I'm shaken to hear the news of your "physical" passing, but your Spirit lives on! My 11 year old daughter was about 3 when she floored me with her near flawless recital of "Mirror in the Bathroom" while I was placing an order at an In and Out drive-thru. She knows "Tenderness" and "Save it for Later"...Your Spirit lives! Rest In Peace my Brother! I weep.
Devastated by the news this morning beautiful man gave us all a soundtrack to many cherished memories and entertained us at many gigs. RIP Ranking Roger ❤️
What a lovely guy and great artist Ranking Roger was, watching this had me bawling my eyes out. Sending My heartfelt condolences to all his family, friends and fans. Thanks for the music and great gigs Ranking Roger, R.I.E.P. 🙏🌈⭐️🎤❤️🌹
I saw Roger in concert in 2017 when they toured with The Selecter. He was amazing but it was wonderful to see Roger having such fun on stage with his son. What a great time for them.
3/5/2023 Coming on now the 4th anniversary of the premature loss of the GREAT Ranking Roger. Been a fan since the 80s. Thank you, KROQ, LA, CA, USA - the ONLY station in Southern CA to play the Beat & SKA/REGGAE in general!. I'm just now able to post my feelings about Roger's passing. I was blessed to see (the) Beat at the Freemont in rural San Luís Obispo, CA, USA, in Jan, 2020. RR's presence was definitely there. (The Beat just played there again last month.) I couldn't go this year bc, like Ranking Roger, I've been enrolled in the club NO ONE wants to join - the Cancer Club - & we all know we're now living on borrowed time. . ~ Per this interview he was a fighter & a fighter with a positive outlook. .Thank you, RR, for your gift of talent which has & still does bring me much joy. You are truly missed. ❤️🌹 -- Thank you to the Beat for sharing this possibly final interview with Ranking Roger. RIP. #TheBeat #RankingRoger #KROQ
RIP Ranking Roger. I met you when i was 14 in Oasis cafe in town & you signed my single & my jeans, i’m 52 now & that will always be a special memory. I have enjoyed so many of your fantastic gigs with Rankin Junior & so has my daughter (the next generation Rude Girl) You will be so sadly missed & my heart goes out to your family & friends at this very sad time 💕
Ranking Roger introduced me to real dancehall/ toasting reggae through the Beat. I will miss him. And I treasure all his classic tracks. Rest in Power.
I saw the English Beat at Alpine Valley Music Center in Wisconsin in 1981. I had just graduated high school and was heading to College that summer. I had the album “ I Just Can’t stop It” and played it 1,000’s of times. These guys were and are so cool! I’m 59 now and still love all of their music. It puts me in such a Great Mood. RIP to Ranking Roger, Great Entertainer and Person. This interview showed his love for what he did and the fans. What a Positive Brave Person to take on a Stroke, (2) Tumors and Lung Cancer and remain positive. PEACE to all the fans, we were all lucky to be touched by him and the group.
So very sad to lose the man... Glad he was able to finish the words of his life & his music & influence will be a legacy that's hard to follow. Thanks for your energy & excitement all through the years. Hugs & prayers to your family & closest. Love & Unity
Lovely man and performer, very sad news sad for his family .he was a friend of my sister and I used to see him at festivals he was a very philosophical man and kind .
Puts a lump in my throat. The Beat, a part of my life through the years and decades, because they were one of the best British bands ever. I talked with Roger once and pointed this out. The ecelecticism, who ever would have thought such a seemingly dispirate group of musicians could cohere into such a great band, with such commercial appeal. Roger was a great dancer, a great singer/toaster, who so looked the part alongside DW and the genius Saxa. On top of all this they had the songwriting...Roger was a great alternative pop star, and his courage here is inspiring. And Daniel, wishing you well. Mark L.
Best wishes Roger, you sound so together on this video about your current challenges. Thats gotta be a massive bonus for your ongoing & full recovery. Lots of love from Mark (Promoter, Tunbridge Wells, 2017). We walked through the town together & had a laugh when a "big" Beat fan failed to recognise you. x
I remember seeing the English Beat in the Birmingham locarno, I think it was 1980. They were supposed by Musical Youth. One of the best gigs I ever so. Rest in peace Roger
Four years on, he is still bringing that joy with his music that he speaks of in the interview. Roger, you were incredibly brave and are so deeply missed.
RIP Ranking Roger your voice and your energy will go down in music history im the same age and my grandkids love and dance to you and the beat their 3 and 5 so your music has been passed on to another generation get them dancing up in heaven you will never be forgotten 😔
So sad but your dignity and positivity is something to hold onto. Thank you for the wonderful music. Soundtrack to my adolescent years. Heart goes out to your family, friends and cats. 🙏🏽💕🦋
So so very sad.. Rest in peace Roger and may the heavens sing & skank for you & with you xx Ranking Jnr you can keep the beat going, I know you can.. Old school pal of your father's ♥️

From the first moment I saw The Beat on MTV back in 1982 Roger's presence meant to me as a black teen male that one can perform music that was different, international. It blew my mind as I grew up on American soul. I never heard of ska and British ska. Roger + Co opened my world view. Roger, please know that you were loved and changed people's minds.
Glad I came across The Beat in early 80s. Played their "Just Can't Stop It " cassette many many times.Songs became more than the last time every time I played them.Still listen to them and have bought 4 or 5 of their albums upon their release. "Special Beat Service" was just as played as their previous when they released it.My favorite 2 albums from them "I Just Can't Stop It " then "Special Beat Service".Ah yeah what music they made. R.I.P.
I saw this video before Roger passed & I thought he would be ok as he had that Warrior spirit. So I have been saddened at the loss of such a great artist. Yes Ranking Roger your contribution is invaluable, any where you deh me bredda ONE LOVE.

He was as interested in us as we were in awe of him, My sis Angie died of lung cancer on 23rd March then a couple of weeks later I heard that Roger had died a few days after her - dark days. RIP beautiful man
Roger had so much love and inspiration to give to the world. He truly cared about the rest of us. He was so genuine and honest. Thank you Roger for leaving us your love and legacy. RIP my friend.
My favorite song is “Tenderness” the way he dances in the video is so full of life, uplifting and positive. Such a talented artist. Rest in peace Roger.
