Linus: carfelly disassemble this nerf gun, its over $100 Also Linus: lets try and make a 5grand laptop go to 5Ghz, and possibly ruin the entire laptop.
What about the time he accidentally left a laptop out in the rain and fixed it. So later on when he was given a free laptop, that he knew he still had to send back mind you, he decided to leave it out in the rain on purpose to get another sick video. The whole way through saying it was an accident (then jokingly admitting it was on purpose).
You should mount it on the ceiling in the corner, and give it a creepy automated voice that says "security measures, engaged" and other such things when it activates... oh and the lighting in the room needs to change to flashing red ;)
Amar Gandhi what about the time he tried to make a pfsense router... also he could have shed a crap ton of weight and cost by going with a rapid strike or a rival ares thinner wood and a raspberry pi to run it all the laptop could be removed as could the 3rd servo as the two triggers to the rapid strike could be wired to the RPI...
Definitely one of my favorite episodes. Actually one of the first episodes I saw, started watching early-ish 2014, haven’t stopped watching linus since.
Stepper motors (found in 3D printers) would be way more suitable for the pan and tilt, giving far better speed and accuracy. Heat shrink is way better than tape for your solder connections. You were correct, an ATMEGA328P chip (found on the Uno) can only handle a few mA of current, but a TIP120 transistor could easily replace the mechanical switch mechanism.
Stepper motors would not be more suitable since they don't know their position. The accuracy of those servos is more than enough for a "project" like this.
saniopurulent stepper motors work based on steps each step is a exact rotation of a specific angle so when you have heavy gun interference in movements can happen and the controller doesn't know that so it looses its position
Linus, there's only one thing left to do. Overvolt it. Buy a couple of 9V RC car batteries, wire them up in parallel and use them to replace the 6 D sized batteries. You'll get 18 volts running through the gun, and a heavily increased fire rate (it pushed my Vulcan from 3 rounds per second to 8).
Matthew Domroski I don't think there's a voltage limiter in the Vulcan, all that happened when I experimented with 18V is that the fire rate increased. there doesn't seem to be anything limiting the voltage to 9V.
The real reason: the Sentry Gun project uses an Arduino and laptop. Linus would have had to find a different project written for the Pi or made his own. Reasoning for the gun project being this way? Not enough power on the Pi to do the video work - motion tracking. (At least on the first gen that was around for years, when most projects like this started)
cnerde, the rpi 3 b+ is more than enough for motion tracking. Heck, its more complicated but using an rpi, you could even ditch the arduino and not just the laptop
And it would be legal too (more or less). The Canadian government put the Elite Strike Rhino-fire on the prohibited list about two months ago. Expect the Mounties to show up and frog-march Linus out of his office. :P
Linus, if you really want to get some mileage with that blaster, pick up 4 "Make Test Battle Hellcat" motors, and 2 "Make Test Battle Honeybadger" motors. They are some of the best motors available for Nerf blasters, and they run off of superior 3S Lithium Polymer batteries. They spin up faster, shoot harder, and will last longer with a large enough lipo pack.

ThaTyger yeah, using a laptop and adding all the motion controls seemed like overkill although it would require more software to add the remote shut off via mobile. Unless you have an IFTT thing set up with like an NFC tag at the door or make it location based
Richard Tapia that seems reasonable. Or attach it to a Pi that has a WiFi dongle and secure that connection to log in and turn it off. The thing they made is awesome, but if you are not going to have it track someone you might as well avoid the extra effort :)
If you were talking about nuts.com I like that Linus made video finally without those ads for squarespace and tunnelbear etc. because it is really annoying
It didn't work. The software he is using takes a picture initially and then sets that as the background image. Everything in the image within the software itself is set to black. Then when something new enters the frame that is detected as white. Thus as the door was closed initially the turret fired at the door even after they both exited since the door was closed in the background image. In a way it works since it does fire automatically, that is not hard to do so I'm sure it did, but it would have never stopped firing and thus would have just ran out of ammo. To make it work they would have needed it to reset the background image after a few seconds but if they are indeed using the software I think, it doesn't have that feature.

Linus, thanks for giving Bob props in this video. I built a sentry project myself years ago and used to moderate the project sentry gun forum.
Linus, there's only one thing left to do. Overvolt it. Buy a couple of 9V RC car batteries, wire them up in parallel and use them to replace the 6 D sized batteries. You'll get 18 volts running through the gun, and a heavily increased fire rate (it pushed my Vulcan from 3 rounds per second to 8).
your an idiot you cant just overvolt like that. Thats how you fry chips.
Obviously you've never modified a nerf gun. There are no chips. Just some switches and motors. You just have to remove the voltage limiting circuit.
If you wire 9V batteries in parallel, you get 9V (which, incidentally, is the same voltage you get from 6 D cells in series).
hellterminator oh crap sorry I mean series wiring, my bad. thanks for correcting my mistakes.
Matthew Domroski I don't think there's a voltage limiter in the Vulcan, all that happened when I experimented with 18V is that the fire rate increased. there doesn't seem to be anything limiting the voltage to 9V.

why not use a raspberry pi instead of a laptop?
