    As an archer myself, I will tell you that you will get more accuracy out of that compound bow with a drop away rest than the force inducing whisker biscuit. Try that first. In addition, even with a compound bow you cannot get away from the archer's paradox. Spine to tip weight to bow draw weight absolutely matters. The archer’s paradox is basically non-existant compared to a recurve bow , it’s constantly drawing the same force, same speed . Compound bows are marvelous pieces of tech .

    I noticed that you were using a "whisker biscuit" on your compound bow, that's not really all that bad but it has flaws. If you change that out to a "drop down arrow rest" you'll be able to avoid variables in the arrow trajectory. Whisker biscuit can cause arrows to move as they leave the strut line causing a shift in the arrows flight. A Drop down arrow rest drops away the second the arrow releases giving it just clean air to move through, leading to better flight paths and overall accuracy, especially for longer distances.

    • @flamethrowr_
      @flamethrowr_ 3 года назад +23

      Drop down arrow rests are inconsistent however because the arrow doesn't start out on the same place, where as with a forktongue arrow rest it forces the arrow to start in the same spot.

    • @froza_legend
      @froza_legend 3 года назад +18

      @@flamethrowr_ That's actually a really cool piece of information, I am going to have to ask about that next time I go to my Archery Shop. I was told by the Paralympic Archer who taught me, to swap my whisker biscuit for the drop down. From personal experience, I haven't had issues with the drop down, but I am going to ask him about the fork tongue arrow rest. I know each archer has his own preferences and styles. I learned something new tonight, thank you man.

    • @czjlee
      @czjlee 3 года назад +5

      @@froza_legend In competitive compound archery, the blade rest was always a go to since it had zero moving parts. You can't go wrong with this, as you aim for the least amount of contact with the arrow. They were popular over drop downs due to the poor engineering on drop down rests of the past. However, that is not the case any more, and the new drop down rests are much more consistent. There are now multiple pros shooting them, to the point where you can argue that the performance comes down to preference. Do you have the stability to shoot a blade rest, or do you prefer a drop down at the cost of lots of tuning and tinkering.

    • @jonahschretlen9747
      @jonahschretlen9747 3 года назад +1

    as a nationally ranked competitive archer and engineer I can tell that you did a ton of research or already had knowledge on archery and it really made this video even better. it will be interesting to see if you can end up creating an improved system that could actually be competitive with target archers, possibly even at standard competition distances (18m and 50m). I know I cant provide much insight from the engineering side but if you need anything from the archery side or have any questions about the equipment I would love to be able to help if possible.

    From an archer and an engineer, this is awesome!
    Some things that might help your fine tuning, especially if you're doing a model based control are your tiller, nock point, release/follow through, and equipment. Tiller is the difference in position between your top limbs and bottom limbs and can move your arrow up or down. Your nock point should also be a little higher than your arrow rest (i think no more than 3/8”). Your release is probably fine but there are bad releases which can throw your shots a bit right or left. Your front arm moving after you release can also affect your shots a good amount depending on how much your control compensates for it.
    For the precision you're looking for, also make sure your arrows are tuned to your setup (spine stiffness and arrow weight to bow weight and draw length) so that they fly straighter. Arrow manufacturers like Easton will have a chart. Make sure the arrows are good arrows too. Cheap ones only have about 0.006" straightness tolerance whereas nice arrows have 0.0015" or better and definitely make a difference.
    Can't wait to see part 2!
    (Edit) I forgot to mention, if you do improve it significantly, definitely look into pin nocks. It's not too hard to Robin hood an arrow and it's a lot easier to replace a pin and a nock than the whole shaft

    • @jedhoman
      @jedhoman 3 года назад +1

      I would agree that the arrows need to be matched with the setup, really big deal. I would also add that a drop away rest might be an idea to look into, they definitely shoot better. I'm not sure with the quick motion though if it would be better than the whisker biscuit.
      I built a basement range as well and will say that a horse stall mat from tractor supply, hung from the ceiling does a great job as a backstop, sometimes a little hard to pull out but haven't had to deal with busted tips or broken arrows.

      He could probably adapt it to be stand alone with a few encoders for bow location and a stereo or quad camera for target tracking.
      I imagine his biggest reason and a very good one at that for going with the camera marker tracking system is that he has used it extensively before so he won't have to learn a bunch of new stuff and it's cheaper to use stuff you already have.
