You know the story - Mercedes wanted "M" class in 1998 for the W163 car, but BMW pitched a fit over use of the single letter "M" in the car name. So, it went with ML (which is "M" plus the first German letter for "truck", LKW, I suppose). When they eventually made an SUV in every size, they just aligned each SUV name with "GL" (Gelandewagen) + its passenger stablemate class (A, B, C, E, S, etc.). Fun fact, the unit-body GL(S) was designed to replace the jeep-like G-wagon (W463). Only, "G's" continued to be in demand by rock stars and the Kardashians, so they were civilized a bit and continue to fetch $150K-$200K a copy ... in spite of a "Maybach" GLS model.
False! My 2015 ML 350 currently has about 1" of mud caked on the running boards...it is filthy. Why? Because I can! It is fun as hell to drive, it is one bad-ass suv. This SUV is a blast driving on dirt/gravel roads... handles hills and curves and turns well.
