    Saying " it is not as good as an OLED " is a bit dumb since there are many factors with a TV and not just black level. For example brightness which Oled suffer from. Then there is image retention , which is worse on and OLED. Then there is the risk of uneven color wear and longevity. The only clear advantage OLED have is absolute blacks. But as I mentioned they can have washed out colors, dimmer picture especially with HDR etc.

      Death By SnuSnu as long as its OLED it has burn ins, so dont buy if youre into watching channels sports playing games or using as a monitor. Anyway even if you baby care the OLED it will lose its overall quality over time, after 3 or 4 years OLEDs wear out noticeably. OLED is a TV for ppl who'd have no problem changing it every other year.

    Excellent review btw and a very honest take on this great set which I think is the best bang for the buck out there from a premium manufacturer. Some swear by Vizio but Sony is still Sony and usually as long as you buy an XBR level Sony you really can't go wrong.

    Picked up this TV yesterday. I have a rather small living room so 49 inch is fine for me. The price has come way down on this set and I was able to find it in Seattle for under a grand. It is replacing a high end Sony CRT that I really liked, the 34 inch XBR 910. It had the Super Fine Pitch tube and 1080i resolution. As much as I liked the colors, deep blacks, outstanding contrast, excellent motion handling of the 910 this 900E is just as good. I do not watch any broadcast TV, I use the 900E only as a display for my PS4 and other consoles. There are no issues with motion blur or input lag in games. The blacks are black, the colors are excellent and the detail you can see in games is stunning! As an aside I like The center base stand on the 900E way more than The forked legs on other TVs. The only criticism I have is the viewing angle. You have to set yourself in front of the TV. Viewing from the side, or standing above it looking down, results in a faded image. In summary this is a great gaming TV. In all the areas that matter it delivers a very satisfying experience.

    I purchased this TV in October last year and am generally happy with my purchase. I watch mainly Sky TV in New Zealand (satellite based 1080i or less). I also watch You Tube through the built-in Chromecast from my laptop. I am not a gamer. The picture quality is great and the X900E is a very good all-round TV. If I have a few criticisms they are:
    1. Viewing angle is narrow, but not a problem for my viewing set up.
    2. Sound quality is average, but nothing out of the ordinary for a modern thin TV.
    3. Lip Sync is a concern, although I am getting used to it. It disappoints me that this TV does not have a built in variable adjustment for lip sync, as the degree of the problem varies between different TV broadcast programs and You Tube videos. The X900E has only an AVSync setting which is either on or off, and is useless. Trying to correct the issue with the audio delay function through my home theater system was unsuccessful.
    The next TV I buy will definitely need to have a built-in variable adjustment for lip sync.
    No TV is perfect though and this is a very good TV.

    Nice review, right now there is a $700 price difference between the 55" 900e and the 930 so it was a no brainer to order the 900e given their relatively close specs. It was also well rated by consumer reports with the 930e only getting a slight better rating. The TV arrives tomorrow so I'm looking forward to it. It'll also be great finally getting a size upgrade from the past two 46" sets I've had over the years. I would have gone larger but don't have the space :(

    Love your reviews and channel. I know you guys are not the biggest fans of 3D, but I think you should point out when a TV does not support the feature. FPR 3D has so much untapped potential, especially in gaming. It's such a shame to see it gone from everything this year.
    Also +1 for you guys to review PC monitors.

    For $1k during Black Friday, I think this is the best value out there given the picture quality when looking for a 55". This same quality would've cost 2-2.5x the price just a year to 18 months ago. Sony upscaling is some of the best in the business and that's very important since most content except for streaming services, video games, and 4K Blu ray will be still be 720p/1080i content from your cable and sat providers.

    I've had this TV for about a month now as my new computer monitor, and so far I like it but I expected a bit more. One it's too bright much like my old Sony 930D. You have to be crazy to sit 5 feet away and have brightness turned all the way. The 2nd thing I noticed was the color. Everything pops in day time, but becomes a bit washed out at night despite being a FALD. FALD is ok, you still get blooming which I can deal with most of the time but it effects color and Black levels at night. With that said, the black levels certainly aren't inky as some people claim, it's a bit grey at time. The blooming effects blue and red as the colors either become too saturated, or washed out looking against black background.
    In regards to motion I've seen trailing when brown/black objects travel across blue. It creates a black wave or wake, minor, but I've seen it more than once. Last issue is dirty screen effect, this has one mark near the center only visible during bright scenes. Is the 900E a good set? Overall yes, but only as bedroom TV or computer monitor. The blooming, and poor viewing angles would be unacceptable as my living room TV. 7.5 out of ten in my book, some issues can't be ignored.

    • @hababacon
      @hababacon 7 лет назад +1

      One thing, the 120 Hz 1080P mode works, but picture quality degrades significantly. It looks better in games, but you will notice a difference. You also have to set manually via Nvidia control panel, custom resolution.

    • @hababacon
      @hababacon 6 лет назад

      Nah, it's the tech, VA panels will give you color shift, it's inherited. 2nd issue is brightness, as a computer monitor it's too bright so I adjusted brightness down to 15 given my proximity. Blooming is inherited in FALD when an object falls between two light zones, the 49 inch only has 24 zones, the 55 has 35 to my knowledge so if you have this size you probably won't see as much.

      That's because LCDs have garbage viewing angles!! with plasmas this was never a problem. You can view from any angle and the picture is always perfect. IPS panels do a better job than VA, and OLED beats LCD, but plasma was the king of viewing angles.

    I'm about 90% sure this is my next TV but my main question is would the size have any effect on the input lag? For example if the 55" has an input lag of 31ms as found in the review, would the 49" have a slightly lower input lag?

    • @Console_Gaming_Vids
      @Console_Gaming_Vids 7 лет назад +1

      @MasterMITSURUGI 7 лет назад +2

      Mitch L, Input lag is pretty good and I play a lot of Street Fighter. Think on the site it's clocked in at 31ms. It's good for causal/average gamers but super competitive/tournament players won't be happy with it. Other than that, a superbly gorgeous picture quality from this TV. Extremely satisfied with my purchase.

    The biggest negative of the TV, the viewing angle, is 100% a non-issue for me. Even at the farthest angle I view it from, it doesn't suffer. It's great that the biggest drawback doesn't affect me. :)

  • @paulanthonycooper

    I have this model but here's a warning to potential buyers. 2017 Sony TVs have a basic flaw. They cannot pause/ rewind/ fast forward live TV. I'm in New Zealand, but I've seen the same complaint in user forums in the UK and Australia. Don't know about other countries. My previous 2013 Sony could. My 2016 Samsung can. The Sony Bravia 2017 Collection brochure states "Record or pause live TV via a hard drive (32gb min.) connected to USB port." But it can't. So buyer beware! Has RTINGS looked into this?

    • @QrayzHD
      @QrayzHD 6 лет назад

      paulanthonycooper Thanks for the warning. Do you know if the 2017 Sony X8500E 55" is the same TV as the X900E is overseas?

      In New Zealand x8500E is different to x9000E (x900E in US). I'm pretty sure x8500E has same problem.

    • @ADOS_DSGB
      @ADOS_DSGB 7 лет назад

      If you compare the scores on their website, they are about exactly the same, definity not worth the extra money comparing the scores.

    • @alchemicrb

      Mike Lowrey then don't go by score, go by content and actually what you need.

    • @roberta2602
      @roberta2602 7 лет назад +7

      Mike Lowrey As much as I appreciate Rtings reviews, going by score alone isn't a good idea...A Not Quite as Bright Full Array > Brighter Edge Lit...That, and it's hard to beat Sony's upscaling... I've had experience with both TVs, and I can say without a doubt the 900E is superior...

    • @alchemicrb

    Hello!
    According to your website, this particular TV suffers from image retention, although according to the data you provided, it does not seem as fierce as some other TVs (OLED TVs in particular), but it is still weird to see a VA panel suffering from image retention. My question being, would you consider it a deal breaker or is it not bad enough for me to be worried about it?
    Thanks
    P.S.: I am a hardcore gamer, if that's anything worth mentioning.

  • @vigneshganesan5510

    Hi Cedric.. great job on the videos... I need ur help in choosing a TV
    Mainly I watch Netflix(6-7hrs daily), movie streaming from websites,
    casual gamer- Xbox one s gaming(1-3 hrs/day and 4-5hrs per day during weekends).
    I might play more during the weekends.
    I am 13-14 feet away from my TV. Should I go for 55" or 65 "?
    Which one would you recommend based on my usage?
    I have zeroed on the two TVs-- Sony 900e and LG OLED.
    My friend got LG OLED55E7. Image and sound quality looks spectacular for the price.
    But the problem of image retention and burn in issue scares me. I don't want to spend more and have a constant thought of IR and Burn in in my head.
    I do switch off my tv when I leave and wouldn't leave it ON overnight or step out hours away.
    I mainly play sports games- Fifa 18, NBA 18, NFL 18 which displays some constant content(scoreboard, radar) on screen.
    LG warranty doesn't cover the burn in issue.
    Also, as far as I know, there is no image quality difference between B7, C7, E7 right? They differ only in the sound quality.
    There is a price difference between models and is it worth paying extra?
    Which one of the OLED should I go for?
    The other model I have in my mind is the Sony 900E.
    Its a completely different display technology, but no issues of image retention or burn in.
    There are many positive reviews for the 900E as well.
    currently, BestBuy offer Sony TV at Thanksgiving prices. 55" 900E- $999. 65" 850E- $1099.
    It's just $100 more but a 10" bigger display. 900E is full backlight whereas 850E is edge lit and some features differ.
    I checked out at the Best buy store 900E and 850E almost look similar at a high level glance.Upon more focus, image quality differ slightly(based on the demo videos that were played)
    Would the sony 900E or 850E be good for gaming- (input lag, hdr )?
    Which one should I go for.? Any other suggestions.?Thanks in advance.

  • @IguanaFilmArts
    @IguanaFilmArts 6 лет назад

    Why don't you guys test out the prescense of FRC/dithering? Get a camera zoomed in a 10bit static image and see if the pixels flicker. It's such an important spec, yet you leave it out; 8bit+FRC Is not 10bit, even if the gradient is good. FRC causes flickering. It causes eyestrain and motion distortion.

    I will be getting a Sony 55X900E in a day or two as soon as I get an email confirming my 2015 Sony X850C extended warranty settlement payment is in process .
    A TV tech they sent came and diagnosed it as a bad panel (sudden failure ) this morning ,later the warranty company acknowledged it is unrepairable by e mail and will follow up with the resolution which covers what I paid for it .
    Today the Sony 55 X900E is $300.00 more US than I paid for the Sony 55X850C at Q4 2015 prices ,all in all a cheap upgrade here I was contemplating maybe at Q4 2017 prices anyway, that said the Sony X850C was a pretty decent TV until the panel failed and would have had a spot in another room here.
    I will be getting another extended warranty of course ,the sales tax and new warranty on the replacement TV are on top of the $300.00 cost difference but it is what it is and should be fine .

    Superb review-love the detailed yet lucid info. I went to
    Best Buy and checked out the 55” and 65” models-amazing PQ. Shows how LCD TVs have evolved over the years.
    Nevertheless, the black levels on the Sony X900E, though quite deep for an LCD TV, simply can’t compete with the inky blacks my SonyWega direct-view CRT HDTV (1080i) can produce. Contrast and black levels on the CRT create unparalleled depth and dimensionality that make for an immersive viewing experience that LCD unfortunately just can’t match at this point in time. To me it’s these qualities that matter the most, more so than 1080 vs. 4K UHD. I also have gotten hopelessly used to wide viewing angles and zero motion blur with my fat tube.
    I hope LCD TV technology can eventually allow the LED lights to turn off completely. This would at least allow OLED-level blacks and better contrast, with no worries about image retention (which is where CRT, plasma, and OLED fall short).

    Looks like this TV is the best one so far. Too bad the price gap between this and 2016 best TV (KS8000) is so big. Like litrealy - Sony costs 5600 PLN (1474 US) while Samsung costs less than 3000 PLN (790 US). Its like twice as much. I wish Sony X900E was cheaper.

    Hi, I will be buying new TV in a few weeks. Currently I am considering Sony XBR55X900E (1299 $) and Samsung UN55MU8000FXZA (1099$). Which do you think is a better option? It will be used mainly for PS4 PRO and Netflix/Amazon Prime. Sony is said to have a little bit better picture quality, but on the other hand worse input lag.

    Personally, I’ve owned Samsung’s, Sony’s, LG’s, and PanasonIcs...Samsung color gamut is always overblown to me where pictures and games can tend to look unnatural or cartoonish..Sony just seems to get the color gamut right where skin tones looks more natural in movies and games realistic and immersive...Just my personal opinion.

      I owned the samsung MU6300 for a week. Main reason for returning it was how dim the screen looks...I could only watch it in a fairly dark room (curtains pulled during the day or only a couple dim lights on at night) and no setting tweaks helped. The "one" remote is too sleek with it's buttons completely flush and it just doesn't work well as a universal remote at all.

    I recently purchased the x900e and I'm extremely disappointed with how slow and sluggish is Android in this TV. Almost unbearable to use. I'm not an image expert but to my picture quality taste all the picture mode presets are garbage with the exception of Vivid - even for gaming! rtings picture settings basically turns off all the good stuff from the TV... What's the point of buying a TV full of image tech processing and disable everything?

      Cr7pt0r I agree 900e is over rated I switch for the mu8000 my god when u watch cable on the mu9000 its like watching 4k streaming from Netflix type of picture when I was one the 900e my god my eyes hurt it's so bad and the colors doesn't even pop it looks so dull to me and the picture quality with cable was blurry to me

    I just bought one 2day...I sat with the 930e on the left and 900e on the right and look at both screen for 15 minutes. Yes,the 930e is better but for the price difference and the the degre of difference ? so I decided to buy the 900e...BTW...when I will be home looking at my tv,I won't have a 930e beside it so I can compare...so my tv will look awesome...

    I live in England & we use PAL 50hz. If I buy a Sony XE90 (X900E) it's 100hz.
    Will I still get judder when watching 24p content with a blu-ray player?
    If the TV was 120hz like it would be in the US, I know there wouldn't really be much of a problem, since 24 goes into 120, five times, so the TV will show each frame 5 times.
    This, however, looks like it is not possible for a 100hz TV (the UK version of the X900E), since 24 doesn't go into 100 evenly.
    Will the 24p content be speeded up to 25fps in order to go into 100?
    I'm really confused by this & wondering if I would be wasting my money on the XE90 if it still displays judder of 24p content.

    Hello, just a quick Question.
    I mounted my x900e (kd55xe9005 european version) with the screws that were in the back of the TV. (in the Vesa holes)
    Did some tests and it seems to hold itself perfect, zero movement.
    I read that the screws aren't for mounting on the wall? Will this be a problem later on? Or are the screws good enough?

    • @BradHebert
      @BradHebert 7 лет назад +4

      He said viewing angle is the worst thing about the TV. I'd say the same about my KS8000, but considering it's usually just a couple people watching the directly from the front it's never really an issue.

    • @albertkelly7129
      @albertkelly7129 7 лет назад +1

      i understand they mentioned it but only really as a minor issue. imo no lcd tv should ever have a rating more than 6 out of 10 regardless how great they are from front on. i know nobody that purely watches their tv from straight ahead 100% of the time. in fact even at straight ahead the viewing angles on VA panels suck so much edges and corners have measurably less contrast and color shift than the centre
      they just suck. cant wait for oled to come mainstream

    No one ever mentions the frame doubling when playing 30 fps games on this tv.
    I first bought a 850e but wasnt totally satisfied with the picture uniformity so i exchanged it with an 900e ,but 30 fps games are almost unplayable on the 900e because instead of motion blur you get double frames on 30 fps.
    Now im thinking of changing back to the 850e or some other set..
    What i dont understand is that of all the rave reviews of the 900e no one has mentioned the double frames you get in game mode with 30 fps games?
    Buyer beware.

      Karin Blum best distance for 4K 55' TV is 1'60 - 1'80 meters (5 - 6 foot).
