you kidding? bernard sounds like he's half asleep...I nearly fell asleep after 10 seconds. back in 2001 they had energy and sounded great, both musically and vocally. no comparison.
I love New Order, I really do and have seen them several times now (last time was at Ally Pally).... but Barny's singing really is awful, maybe it's part of the charm, and I know he was never a brilliant singer to begin with, but he just seems to be getting worse and worse. Sorry.
40 years of singing will do that to you. If anything he sings better ( more pitch control ) now that when he was young. Barney is a self described 'reluctant" singer. In Joy Division he played guitar and keys . He never expected to be a singer. He knew he didn't have it in him. When Ian diedthey all tried and he was the ' better ' of the three. New Order fans know this and don't really care. Like you said. It is part of the charm. The other charm is that with the exception of Stephen on Drums they are not great players. They play by ear with no formal training and are still not great, even Hooky. ( Phil and Tom having come later . They are good ). The beauty is on how they can possibly make such great music while individually being so so..New Order is..New Order. Talented mofos who have a huge following who accept them with their flaws and Barney is a 'blah' singer, always was. If you saw them live in the 90s Barney's vocals we're heavily overdubbed to make him sound like the records. This was mainly bc they had signed with London records and went commercial a bit. But otherwise most NO gigs show Barney's charming vocal limitations. I do think he is singing lower and sounds tired. This is probably bc they've been touring a lot. There is a video of the Corona concert in Mexico from 2018 I think?..He sounds terrible there. Barely any voice.
