The way you talk about your friends warms my heart tbh
the rain and thunder in the background was top tier 👌
I want to read a little life also but I recently watch Noelle Gallagher’s video and she mentioned how it’s kinda sad that people recommend it bc they want to bond over how sad it is. I for sure want to read it but I’m not ready for the feels.
I LOVE A little life but I won't recommend it to be anybody just because of how just hopeless it is and how it sometimes feels like it is written specifically to torture people and their hearts.
But at the same time, this book is very very beautiful and targeted towards a very specific audience.
i wrote a comment on noelle's video about this but please be careful reading it, it's a very very upsetting read x
I recently finished a little life after having it on my shelf for 3 years and boyyyyyyyyy did it mess me up. I was in a slump and couldn't pick anything else up for a while. Very well written, yes, but also very much agree it is incredibly traumatic and it should not be one people recommend so much.
yeah its one of those books that is more than just sad, it can literally be traumatizing. people romantisize the idea of reading A Little Life and they shouldnt.
As much as it messed with my head and my physical health, I still feel that the novel's overwhelming tragedy keeps us from considering the level of conscious artifice that has gone into its writing. Also, as many people have mentioned, its conspicuous lack of history is also worth looking into. Perhaps it's Yanagihara's sort of sly high emotionalism has conditioned us as readers to not be able to look beyond its trauma or simply take it up a second time for analysis!
concerning *a little life,* i commented the following on noelle gallagher's video where she emphasised the danger of blindly reccomending it:
"i totally agree + you're the only booktuber who i've seen actually address it directly - i honestly feel like it's incredibly irresponsible to recommend this to anyone because of how manipulative and traumatic it is to read. yes, i'm glad i read it and if people tell me they want to read it because it's already on their radar i will tell them i did love it but i also find myself giving them a LOT of warnings about the content because despite people saying it's a hard read it's not just that, it's emotional manipulation on account of the author. so yeah, if anyone is reading this comment and really wants to read it, i say go for it but please please please be careful and consider ALL the content warnings (they're on goodreads) because i found myself incredibly triggered by some of the content in it and i have yet to be triggered by any other film or book i've read!" x
Thank u very much❤️I. was very purplexed about reading it since I'm extremely sensitive. And this book might have ruined my mental health.
fun fact: Perfume was Kurt Cobain's favorite book
That was why I first picked the book up and I ended up loving it too. Definitely one of my top favourites.
Ais ling same! 😆🙋🏻♀️
I read A Little Life at the beginning of this year (I believe it was my 2nd book) and look where we are right now. 🤡 I think despite all the warnings, no one is ever really ready for A Little Life. What ultimately made me say it's a great book are the friendship and family dynamics which hit me the hardest and affected me the most, sometimes even more than the trauma (which some argue are kinda torture porn-y) that Jude went through. I hope you ~enjoy~ and happy birthday! 😊
kafka on the shore is beyond amazing
you're energy is so relaxing i love it
i just knew you were going to pull it a little life when you said you were scared about it!
the ASMR when you tapped your nails on the Allende book was just A+ content
Just discovered your channel and I’m in love with the way you talk about books !! ♥️♥️♥️
I think Kafka on the shore is my second fav book, first being, of course, 100 years of solitude. You will love it!!
Your voice is so satisfying to hear!
Love your cozy vibe. So soothing.....
- A Little Life -> picked it up to see what all the hype is about; kinda scared to read it
- Persepolis -> finished it yesterday and loved it; immediately picked up the 2nd one
Perfume! You're gonna love it 🥰
The amount of times people have talked about the little life and the amount of times I’ve ran away from their vlogs because I want to get into the story without knowing anything is not in the books. But I guess it took knowing you’re gonna read it too to add it to my wishlist and hopefully I’ll be buying it soon! I’m (NOT) ready to be wrecked inside out!
I recently finished A Little Life and as hard as it was to read, it is done in a beautiful way. It does stay with you after you finish the last pages.
Omg the sound of that rain and storm is heavenly... You seem so sweet and genuine and I love it. Subscribed!
I've read all but the most recent of Murakami's novels and Kafka is by far my favourite. Hope you enjoy it. You're going to love Perfume, it's so messed up and the prose is gorgeous and inventive.
The Perfume is one of my absolute favorite novels! I recently discovered your channel and love your taste in books and absolutely adore your videos! Can't wait to hear your opinion on The Perfume once you've read it! :)
Your voice is so calming! 😍 Esp with that rain in the background, this was such a calming video
I'm so exited about all this books and the readingvlogs to come
🤩Seeing how passionate you are about books and reading makes me so happy😌 and motivates me to read more and more. Love you💙, have fun with your books.
Listening to you talk about books makes my day❤️
A little life is my 'book of the year' so far this year, it is indescribable.
Just started watching your channel yesterday, and I feel we have fairly similar taste in books - esp regarding magical realism. If you're interested in international writers of magical realism, I highly recommend getting into some of Selma Lagerlöf's stories - The Emperor of Portugallia, Saga of Gosta Berling or (my favourite) A Manor House Tale. She was the first woman to become a Nobel laureate in literature in 1909, and her works are absolute classics here in Sweden.
perfume is one of my favourite books ever !!!!!! love this vid sm :^)))
Hanya Yanagihara's writing is so beautiful and it definitely helped me get through the heart-breaking parts of the book
I'm excited to hear about your experience with House of the Spirits. It's been on my TBR for well over a decade now (along with One Hundred Years of Solitude) but for some reason, I find the magical realism genre very intimidating. I'm anxious to dig into One Hundred Years of Solitude now after seeing how much you enjoyed it!
I've read Persepolis and it was excellent. If you like it, there's a sequel that covers more of her life as an adult.
Oh, I also wanted to mention: in Spanish, a double L (as in Allende) is usually pronounced with a "Y" sound, so "a-YEN-day." :)
The rainy/stormy atmosphere in the background was so lovely. Almost makes me anxious for fall coziness. 😊
I recommend to just dive in and enjoy. I really like magical realism because the stories kind of flow and unfold in such a special way, I don't know if everyone experiences it that way. Another excellent Latin American magical realism book I can recommend is Pedro Páramo by Juan Rulfo, i think it's more of a novella buy very good none the less. I hope you enjoy them :)
The gratitude you show is so radiating! Happy late birthday💕
i read the arrival in primary school and was absolutely in love with it! but for years i couldn't remember what i was called and from this video i recognised the cover, thank you so much! it's truly a beautiful story, i hope you enjoy it.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold sounds like an unforgettable read! Great haul and Happy Birthday! 😊💕🥰
Your voice is so soft. I can listen to it whole day. ❤❤
ahhhhhhhhhh yesss so happy to see isabell allende in this haul!!!!
The amount of books makes me so happy!
I can't wait for you to talk about a little life.
You're voice is so beautiful and calming. I think this maybe the best bookhaul I have ever watched. Thank you :) I loved everything
I just subscribed to you because I love the way you talk about books!! And your rainy book haul gave me such cozy vibes so thank you! 🥰
I love the story of frankenstein. I’d love to hear the story told from Elizabeth’s point of view. Thanks so much for sharing your haul!
Perfume is one of my favourite books ever! I think you will love it 🖤
i am so excited you’re going to read some Allende, she is incredible and everything she does is wonderful and i think you’ll really love it. also, i read persepolis and adored it, it was really good and sad but i learned so much. happy belated birthday em
Omg this is so sweet you just made my day🥰🥰 happy belated birthday sending all of the virtual hugs !!
emma: i've read a lot of really really bad classic retellings
*jekyll loves hyde has entered the chat*
sarah's perusals oh my gosh I love you that’s exactly what I was thinking😂
@@emmiereads i lowkey wanna read it based off of how much you detest it 😂
I was having a really shitty day, but your videos always make me feel better! Thanks, Emma!
You are such a blessing Emma!!! ❤️
Ah I miss the rain. We haven’t had any in months 🙌
Great haul Emma.
so excited to hear ur thoughts on Perfume and Persepolis!!
hello, emma!
I'm so sorry I missed your birthday. happy belated birthday! I hope you had a lovely time.
all I want to say really is that I read a little life in 2016 and I still think about the characters in the book regularly. but it's important that you're in a good place when you read it, and it's important to point that out because the book deals with basically everything that could be a trigger for people who're not in a good mental state. I'm glad you pointed that out.
hope you're having a good day, as always. ♥️♥️♥️
Persepolis is a MASTERPIECE!! It’s so good! U should read the complete work, not just volume 1
1Q84 sounds sooo interesting, looking forward to hearing your thoughts soon!
This was such a sweet video, happy birthday!!
4:40 Woah woah woah. XD This reminds me, a Prof from my undergrad told us about a book- The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann which made him feel suicidal. I haven't read it yet but I never forgot the title when he described the book like that. Don't know how a certain book can make me feel more miserable than I already do, but I'd totally let a book break my heart aparttt.
Hi. Just found your channel here in the UK.
I love your adoration for books. Not just the words in them but the actually physical being of the book, smell, touch and the cover design.
I love how you speak so eloquently about your favorite works and how they make you feel.
I have read A Little Life. It took me 3 months! I still think about it...its a tough but beautiful story!
Can't wait for your next video. 😊❤
Oh my god, first of all, happy belated birthday! Secondly, when I started reading magical realism, I started with One Hundred Years of Solitude and then read House Of Spirits. I am so excited for you to read it and to see whether you like it or not! Lots of love!
Oh maaan, you really need to vlog reading A Little Life!
Your voice is sooo calming.
You will never be quite the same again after A Little Life. It's a tough read and definitely intended as a tearjerker. It throws pretty much all the trauma and tragedy at you that you can think of, but I think it works.
What makes it even sadder is that it also shows how important it is to be kind to oneself and to let oneself be loved and cared for, believing that it's deserved. And that some people never get there.
I had to read Perfume for school when I was about 16. I didn't want to because I'd seen the film and thought it was disgusting, and not in a good way (still not a big fan), but I'm glad that I was made to. It IS disgusting, but also morbidly fascinating. Not sure what I'd think of it now, but I really liked it at the time.
I could listen to you talk all day 🥺
this video is so gooddd omg, relaxing
belated happy birthday!!! 🥺🥺
zero thirteen thank you so much!!💕💕
Murakami is always captivating whatever book you read. Currently reading kafka on the shore. And Murakami because of cats! We have same taste in books wow. First booktuber I found with same taste. 😍❤️
You'll know about as much about 1Q84 after reading it as you did before you read it- it's very open-ended and quirky!
Yes I already commented but I wanted to say you’ve got me into Murakami and thank you for that. Happy belated bday!
You make my day so much better!
i absolutely love the way you talk
I have the background music with a purring Cat which I listen to and it helps me settle down for the night.
funny how im watching this video while is happening a storm here in my city in brazil
crazy how the world works sometimes haha, i feel like you are here with me because of that
i love you
Perspolis is very good. Had to read for a literature class. Love your channel.
so calming and beautiful video loved it ❤😇🥰
Oh, such amazing books! My bookclub is reading ‘The House of the Spirits’, I believe most people like it! I loved ‘Before the Coffee Gets Cold’, it even made me cry 😭. Lovely video 💕
Happy Belated birthday to you 🎁 🎂 🎉 Wishing you lots of love and health.
hey emma!! you should definitely read something by Jorge Luis Borges(Fictions) and Julio Cortazar (Hopscotch) if you haven’t already. Being argentinian myself i grew up reading them and i recommend their books to everyone, they’re absolutely gorgeous
When you were saying these days it's easier for you to read graphic novels or illustrated books I thought: "oh, I should tell her to check out The Arrival by Shaun Tan" and then there it was lol
Hope you love it as much as I did
the way i knew you were going to talk about a little life when you mentioned a book that might "break your whole heart apart" 😆
Ooh Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors! I hope you love it.
allende is my favorite author and house of the spirits is one of her best! if you enjoy her writing but want to try a different genre, Paula is a gorgeous and heartbreaking memoir i can't recommend highly enough. enjoy!!!
kafka on the shore is my favorite book!!!
Persepolis is a brilliant read. Hope you will enjoy Emmie
happy belated birthday!!!
A little life ;((((( love itttttttttttt
I love Perfume so much!
I really like your taste in books - would you have any author/book recs for someone who is wanting to start reading classics? (I have read a bunch of Hermann Hesse books and enjoyed them!)
Hermann Hesse is my all time favorites TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
ok, you've done it. because of you i just ordered two rilke books online.
Happy Belated birthday to you.🎁🎂🎉.Wishing you lots of love and luck.Hoping you and your family are doing well.
*squeak* I want your moon earrings!! 🙈
I've read Persepolis and it was amazing as a story but also a way to learn about a part of the world I only had the most surface level of knowledge about. Also this is making me want to read Rilke as someone who loves poetry I feel like I need to try his work.
Oh my goodness I love The Arrival! I've never heard anyone mention it before! I just finished a book which I need to recommend to you, it's called In Ruins by Christopher Woodward. It's nonfiction all about the beauty of decaying things like abandoned houses and the Colosseum, etc. and how humans are drawn to and fascinated by ruins. I absolutely loved reading it, it filled me with so much inspiration.
i love that you love murakami!! i've only read a couple of his books but he's stated that one of his major influences is Richard Brautigan, who is possibly my favorite writer. If you haven't heard of him/his work i highlyyy recommend you check out In Watermelon Sugar. its a really quick lovely little novel of magical realism and it's unlike anything i've ever read. :)
I read The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein earlier this year and I really enjoyed the twist. I didn't expect what she did with the story. It was brilliant. I gave it 4 stars because some parts were a little slow. But still, the end was awesome!
I loved A Little Life. I haven’t read a book in years and decided to read this one after seeing all the videos about it. I checked it out at the library and literally read it in 4 days. I COULD NOT put it down. I didn’t sleep because I just wanted to read it. When I did finally sleep, it was the first thing I looked at in the morning when I woke up. It’s heartbreaking, but absolutely worth it. However, there should be a trigger warning to people who don’t know anything about it.
Can you please tell which triggers it touches?
MarinaOgen Hi! Of course. For those who don’t want to have any spoilers at all or who are triggered by certain terms, stop reading this. The triggers are below:
Sexual, mental, and physical abuse
Graphic images
Self harm/self mutilation
Pedophilia
Body dysmorphia
Child sex trafficking
Depression
Anxiety
Eating disorders
Happy belated Birthday!
I enjoyed Before Coffee Gets Cold. But remember to read it by keeping in mind that this is a play.
I love how much translated/international work you have in this haul!! Have you ever considered reading (or listening to) Rilke in his original German? He has such a way with words and the sound of them that you don't even have to speak the language to understand :)
Also Perfume is one of my favourite books of all time, it's incredibly beautiful and creepy and poetic
I am really really enjoying watching your channel please stay safe love 💖 John Saxon in Australia xx hope that you have had a great birthday 🎂 keep up your amazing channel xxx
I'm also so excited to read Kafka on the Shore but many people have told me that the story is even better if you first get to know Franz Kafka and his works I'm currently in the process of finishing one of his collections before starting this one. So excited to see what you will think of it :)
I'm currently reading A Little Life and I'm leaning towards those people who don't find it perfect. I love the writing style, but I think there could be major issues with how the book handles certain things if things proceed how I think they will. I don't want to spoil anyone, but I'm sure the people who have read the book know what I'm referring to.
I have heard that it's basically torture porn, there is no purpose for the painful scenes (as in it doesn't make the characters grow or become stronger or overcome their traumas) the author wanted to hurt people with the book and also she didn't research the topics she writes about in the book😬 that kinda makes me question whether I want to read the book or just let myself get spoiled until I know the whole plot without having the emotional trauma from reading it myself😅
i love to watch you, you are one of the cute and smartest people ever. you looked so beautiful with this hari (you still look amazing ofc)
I just read The Arrival by Shaun Tan for a class a few weeks ago! I loved it!!
Ooh, I’m currently reading Beach Read! I’m 50 pages in so far and it’s good. Hope you like it! 🙃
as soon as you mentioned 100 Years of Solitude i knew you were going to hold up The House of the Spirits! i hope you enjoy it :)
Interested to hear what you think of Perfume! I found it w e i r d!
Kafka on the Shore is SO much better than Windup Bird Chronicle, you’re going to absolutely adore it✨
