Hi Emma, I’m a former vet tech in the US and I just wanted to clarify that vets are not sponsored by Hills or Royal Canin. We don’t get any kickbacks from them or any kind of sponsorship money for carrying them in hospital. Vets partner with them because they have prescription diets, which are developed by veterinarians as therapeutic diets to treat specific conditions. Some of these diets, like the hypoallergenic food, wouldn’t be harmful to a pet that doesn’t have allergies if they ate it, but some, like their kidney diets, could actually be quite harmful if it’s eaten regularly by a pet that doesn’t have that issue. That’s why they’re sold by prescription only, so that owners who have self-diagnosed their pets don’t buy a food that could potentially do more harm (and there’s a surprising amount of people who do this). Purina also has a prescription line, but as far as I know these are the only three brands that have prescription food. Also, their claims about their foods are backed by extensive research. This is a very simplified explanation, but I hope it addresses some of your suspicions about why vets carry these two brands and recommend them so much.
When comparing labels with some other, smaller brands, why are they lacking so much though? Genuine question, not arguing
@@__loveball I’m not sure what you mean by lacking. They are labeled as a complete and balanced diet, meaning nothing needs to be added to them for the pet’s nutrition. To get this label the food must pass feeding trials and meet the Cat or Dog Nutrient Profiles set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). (Per the FDA website)
@@SingingMagick Thank you for the information. By lacking I meant for example some or their cat foods not having enough protein, also if I remember correctly they use a lot of grains in their foods. From my own research a few years ago I remember I concluded that Josera seems the best for cat food in terms of price and quality, have you heard of the brand? It made a huge difference in my cat’s health. I might try RC or Hills now that I don’t have access to that brand anymore.
@@__loveball I’ve never heard of Josera, but I’m glad it worked for your cat. Like people, some animals require higher protein levels than others, not just because of their species but on an individual level. There’s also nothing wrong with grains being in pet food. That’s mainly a marketing point that took off with boutique brands. Dogs have developed heart disease while on grain-free food, and we’re not sure if it’s because of the lack of grains or what they used to replace them. It wasn’t a huge issue with cats because their food it fortified with taurine no matter what, because they require a high level of it for heart health. But there’s really nothing wrong with having grain in the food, unless you know from food elimination trials that your pet is allergic to grains. (For the record, most pets are allergic to the protein in the food, like my cat is allergic to turkey.)

Please don’t run a marathon without training for at least 9months otherwise you will strain or worst break something. Bones are like wire,if you run too far too early, you will fracture bones in your feet. I fractured one of my toes,very painful. I then tore a meniscus/knee cartilage and had to have an operation to remove it,also very painful. This was precisely because I thought I could cram 9 into three months to run a marathon. I’ve run since primary school and got into long distance running when I left school. Read Murakami’s book “What I talk about when I talk about running “ for motivation, but take things slow and gradually increase. Get a manual on how to train for a marathon. Cheers Emma

Congrats on publishing! I am super familiar with the academic publishing process and know how much prep goes into it, it's no easy feat.
I imagine publishing in English lit is much different than what I do (health research) but don't get discouraged if you get any rejections. We talk about getting rejections as "just finding the right home" for the paper. I think the most I ever got rejected was when it took seven different journal submissions before it got accepted. But it's published now!
That said, some papers get accepted at the first journal we submit to, so I hope your process goes that smoothly too! It's a wild and wonderful feeling to see your name on a real byline. I even ordered a physical copy of the journal that I first got published it, it's so special :)

Listen, I know Royal canin and hills suck on paper, and the Rx diets are a scam. BUT my cat is on a Royal canin Rx diet because of the vet recommendation, and every time we get tired of paying for it and change it, inevitably his issues flair up again within a month or two, no matter the quality or price point of the food. When we keep him on Royal canin, he’s stable for at least a year and if it does flair it’s more readily resolved. It’s their gastric fiber response. I work in the horse industry, I feel pretty skilled with nutrition for horses. But the reality on pet nutrition is most info no matter the perspective is unreliable and untested. Having a potential for allergies might make things more complicated but try to not get too tied up on the “quality” of the food. The good thing about Royal canin and hills is that they do actually have some science backing up their foods, and a lot of boutique brands don’t. Try to not get discouraged, and be open to trying anything that might help. Good luck and hope he feels better soon!
I am not a vet but i work with many vets and I have thoughts on your Hills Royal Canin criticism. There is a movement towards smaller pet food brands that market themselves as healthier, "boutique" brands, raw ingredients and a bunch of other marketing buzzwords. But there isn't any evidence these diets are actually good because these brands don't have any vets on staff actually testing the food. Hills and Royal Canin DO. People see things like "recalls" for large brands as a negative when the reality is that small brands aren't recalled because their food isn't tested as much or held to as high of a standard. Vets aren't suggesting food to make your pet sick, that is a conspiracy. I just wanted to assuage some of your fears about these brands. I hope Calcifer is feeling better soon!

Hey Emma! I feed my cats a raw food diet. It does cost more but it’s the best diet for a cat. If you research it you will find that dry food isn’t that great for cats. I have seen a huge change in them since I switched their food.
To come back on the animal food. Both Royal Canin and Hill's are the only 2 brands in the world, that fall under government requirement instructions. Meaning that they cannot put any and all ingredients in their kibble or wet foods, as they are being monitored or they lose their 'higher status' as government-approved. Any other brand of animal food, across the globe, can put into their kibble what they want, without anyone regulating it. I do agree that these two brands are very expensive and they are trying to take over the animal food market. And that they have their limitations, such as working with slaughter waste. But as someone who studied animal science and had to go to different brands of factories, I can tell you that they do score the best out of the selection today. If your cat does have an allergic reaction to food, their hypoallergenic or an-allergenic foods do tend to work. Good luck with the process! It is hard when your animal isn't feeling well.

I wanted to save this comment for the reading vlog because I usually don't comment a lot (My writing in English is not the best) but your excitement with LOTR is SO REAL!! This is a reread for me. I used to read it every year as a teenager since it is one of my favorite stories ever; but after I had a little embarrassing moment years ago in college talking about it, every time I saw the movies or pick up something about it to read I would cringe (lol I know, but I was young) so I forgot how much I loved it! This is my first year reading the saga in English, and god, IT'S SO GOOD!! I'm glad I got the opportunity to read it again, and I feel like this excitement is even greater than before, since it's been a while since I last read it! I'm so glad you two are enjoying it, and I can't wait for the videos. Congrats on the publishing news, and I hope Cal feels better soon! All the love to you guys~

If you can, please avoid Royal Canin and Hill's. You're correct, the ingredients of both foods are horrendous. You may want to try Dr. Marty's (he has been a veterinarian for decades), who makes a dry raw food called Nature's Feast, that you can use either or with warm water added.
I use Dr. Marty's for my cat, Maddie Grace, who's 12 years old and is very healthy.

I totally understand the suspicion on the cat food! We have to buy our boy prescription Royal Canin Urinary food, but it's the only brand with the prescription wet food that comes in chunks. He will *not* eat pate, so it's our only choice.

It's so cool to me as someone who absolutely hates university and studying and anything academic, and I feel sick at the thought of having to write a paper to end my undergrad pretty soon, to see you love what you're doing in uni and be proud of it and work on it so deeply. My family’s dog developed something similar to what’s going on with Calcifer a few years ago. We switched her to Purina Pro Plan (recommended by our vet, same with the two other food brands you mentioned), and mixed it in with plain raw food recommended for dogs like cooked chicken or pumpkin. It helped immensely!! I’d do a bit more research in that specific food brand because it could be completely different for cats, and I know a lot of the types of food under Purina are bad for animals even if that certain one worked for us. It’s super stressful and scary to go through, but he’s in great hands with you!! I hope he starts to feel better soon!

I am so glad you’re loving LOTR!!! I read it for the first time a few years ago and I’ve been doing an annual reread ever since. Last time I spread my reread over 6 months (I did a super close reading which was tons of fun) but I’m reading along with Game of Times this year and I am tearing through it. Such a great book.
I will happily watch whatever vlog you post about it but I think a multi-part vlog would be great! Maybe one for each book?

Hi Emma, I’m not a vet (I’m a “human vet”), but COVID can cause diarrhea. So maybe ask Calcifer’s vet if you should wait for him to be negative for COVID and see if his symptoms improve before embarking on the expensive food journey? I’m glad he’s well!

For dry cat food, try Orijen and regarding wet food, I only buy Almo Nature the sort with only 100% fish and water as ingredients. I have also 2 cats and one of my cats started having allergies also. Orijen has helped a lot. I would never buy Hill's or Royal Canin !
