  • I review and install a full set of high flow downpipes and full 2.5" catback exhaust with resonators for the 25th anniversary Audi S4 B7 made by ‪@FastIntentions‬. That's after going for a road review of the OE exhaust setup I was running (OE piggy pipes and the original cat back pipes on the 25quattro), showing a DIY removal of the exhaust and getting the downpipes professionally ceramic coated by Custom Powder Solutions in Edmonton, AB. I share a little exhaust system engineering and design information, finish the installation and we go for a drive to hear the new pipes roar.

    7 years ago i bought this exact setup for $1500. Couldn't believe how cheap the guy was selling it for. After looking at many videos i had the shop doing the job,cut out the resonators. Now 7 years later i have 2 FI non res S4 systems and 1 Rs4 non res system and still haven't heard this system resonated, in person . Sounds great 😂

    Steve! I daily an 2010 S5 V8 and last year I was looking on modifying the stock exhaust. After lots of research on how to achieve a nice exhaust note, not raspy/drony or too loud like the typical muffler delete neither spending 3k on a very nice exhaust system. So I went ahead and installed a Magnaflow Xpipe (resonated) where the front resonators are (again S5 has different exhaust scheme than your S4), I kept the middle muffler there, (this is a muffler by absorption, according to my research this is the best way to muffle down noise and keep good flow for performance). Anyway, followed by muffler delete and OE style tips. I’m very very happy with this setup and sounds very similar to your S4, of course not with the sublime build quality of Fast Intensions. Nonetheless I’m very happy with the outcome.

    I have a Nissan 370 Z that I brought to the Fast Intentions shop in Simi Valley, CA, after a 5 hr drive down from the bay area where I live. They installed their 2.5" TDX x-pipe with the 18" x-pipe resonators and 14" carbon fiber mufflers. I also had them install a Stillen Gen 3 long tube cold air intake. The next day I went over to Specialty Z, a few miles down the road and had the car dyno tuned by Seb on their Dynojet chassis dyno with the Ecutek software suite. My estimated peak rear wheel hp was about 273 @ 7200 rpm before any of the mods. The first baseline pull on just the hardware additions was 301 rwhp. The low end and mid range fuel/air ratios were extremely lean, due to the increased airflow into and out of the engine. After about 6 more pulls, Seb dialed in the A/F ratios and ignition timing across the rev range and we got 321 peak rwhp. The engine torque scaled up uniformly across the rev range by about 15% and the car felt as if it had gained another cylinder. My estimate of the peak crankshaft hp, with the 15 to 17% assumed drivetrain loss(6-speed manual), is about 387 hp. This is opposed to Nissan's figure for this engine(VQ37VHR) of 332 hp. I do run a blend of Sunoco SS100 100 octane racing fuel to bring up the pump gas octane from 91 aki to 94 aki. This is close to the optimum octane that Nissan engineers had designed the engine for.

      That's awesome, thanks for sharing your story Jim. The classic metaphor of an engine just being a big air pump is never proven more true when you measure the before and after of more air in, more air out mods - especially the thoughtfully engineered ones. FI has obviously dedicated a lot of attention to the Nissan community and has really dialed in their product. Good on you for ensuring proper tuning, too.

    Same setup I have. Fast Intentions is hands down best sounding exhaust for the b6/b7 s4.

    I had to replace the stock exhaust out on my 05 B6 S4 avant when it rusted. The pipes were the problem, not the muffler like yours. The stock exhaust on my currently 08 B7 is so much better in all respects. It’s in much better condition at the same mileage. It sounds much better, and looks it too with the quad pipes. Only wish would be a little extra volume at certain times. Otherwise like how there’s zero drone and it can be fairly quiet, at low revs, and not attract unwanted attention when necessary. It’s kind of a Goldilocks exhaust and there’s nothing run of the mill about it. It still gets attention when you give it revs. Love the sound of the FI exhaust though.

    I wonder if the down pipes help with the mind numbing drone from 1500-1900 RPM with the FI. It’s possible on my Avant then drone is more noticeable, but I’m tempted going back to stock, driving around the city is hard on the ears.
    Otherwise I love the exhaust, absolutely sounds amazing outside the car.

    Car is looking great Steve. Keep them coming. BTW - How is your catch can set up working? I have about 1300mi on mine and a TB inspection showed some oil at the bottom before the Intake manifold. Also getting some leaking from the seam of the can. I am wondering if the Crank case vent could be split from the heads, then sent into two individual cans?

    • @FigureItAudi
      @FigureItAudi  5 месяцев назад

      For some reason my car just doesn't have a lot of blow by...which sounds like a good thing but I've never even filled the drain hose below the can, nevermind the can itself. Intake manifold was nice and clean last I took it off as well. I know what you mean re: splitting but with OE sized hoses running from the heads to the can and can to intake, there really shouldn't be a problem with flow that would result in non-captured vapours. And you're still running a PCV in line with the can to the intake?

    • @ThorinJames
      @ThorinJames 5 месяцев назад

      I hear ya. That's a good sign. How many miles? - With 150k miles I do see a fair amount of blow by - dare I say excessive. I loose about 1.5 US quarts between oil changes at ~3k intervals. Perhaps that's obsessive but I don't drive the car much and if it does suffer worsening tolerances in the cylinders...can't hurt. Yes. I also replaced the PCV and suction pump relatively close to adding the catch can. @@FigureItAudi

      Follow up: I contacted Radium with a question regarding my catch can leaking at the main O-ring. They quickly sent me a new main O-ring which was noticeably different in specification. Specifically; the material is similar to the tan O-rings of the AN fittings and the gauge of the O-ring slightly larger. The initial supplied O-ring was black and smaller respectively.
