GARMIN FORERUNNER 955 SOLAR REVIEW (ONE MONTH LATER) | 6 THINGS I LIKE (AND 5 I REALLY DON’T)

  • Hi guys, how's everyone doing?
    Today I'm going to be reviewing the top of the line Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar, a multisport watch I've been wearing for the last month. And when I say I've been wearing it for a month, I mean 24/7, not just for workouts.
    The Forerunner 955 is a superb watch, but it's not without its flaws. I love the versatility, the new sensors, the new GPS and the some of the new features, but I could live without the battery issues, and I would also appreciate if I could access running power readings without having to wear the HRM-Pro heart rate strap.
    This video is longer than my usual reviews, but I have a lot to say! It started off being 45 minutes long but I thought, 'no one's going to sit through a 45-minute long video of me waffling to the camera', so I cut out some of the content. and explanations. If something doesn't quite make sense or my argument seems less well-rounded, it's probably because 60% of that section ended up on the cutting room floor.
    In case you want to buy the watch, here are the links to Garmin (not affiliated with them so feel free to click through if you wish, I won't get any money):
    US - www.garmin.com...
    UK - www.garmin.com...
    As always, any constructive criticism and feedback about the video and the watch is appreciated - lay it on me thicc, peeps! If you enjoyed the video, hit that like button and consider subscribing to my channel because there is more where that came from.
    Thanks for watching!

    Inteesting points of view. I think most persons want more features not more recycled features that do almost the same thing or based on the same types of information. Inovation is definately needed to justify the price increases and then most would happily pay for it.

    I don’t care about Amoled screen. The battery issue is a problem. Any updates? Thanks.

    Personally I don’t care for the amoled screen. To flashy and lights up in your peripheral vision all the time. So I don’t understand why amoled should be the 2022 standard, when there’s plenty of people who just want a watch that’s not in your face all the time. You know, like a regular watch.

    • @pacemaxpro
      @pacemaxpro  2 года назад +1

      AMOLED has many benefits over MIP and it's especially useful when running/cycling in broad daylight as the contrast is so much better than MIP displays. Garmin has a few AMOLED watches and they will roll out even more once they figured out how to make it work on all their watches. I didn't say I only need all the watches to be AMOLED in 2022 but as a person who come across wearables quite often, I'm telling you: AMOLED is the way to go. If the flashing bothers you, turn off the flick sensor and make the screen come on when you press the button, easy as that.

      @@pacemaxpro I understand where you come from, and this is of course personal preference. I had the Epix and I’ve used the Apple Watch for years. (not anymore). I agree with you while training, but not all the other hours of the day.
      Cheers for replying, mate.

    Great video! Very in dept and informative.
    The price difference between the regular Fenix 7 and the 955 solar is similar. My question is, for someone who swims, bikes, and runs which one of the two would you suggest?
    Thanks!

    Can I Use a Screen Protector With a Garmin Solar?as it will reduce the solar intensity received by the Power Glass lens?

  • @tomylee

    Several times a week charging I don't see. I have up to 10 days with 1-2h GPS a day. When you do the math 1h all GPS a day you come up to 9 days. Only GPS you will get 11.5 days. So I would say that is right so far. Training readiness an Body Battery is something different and if you don't need it, delete the widget. It for sure will not cost battery. On the other side you like to have running power which is at the moment on every watch or pod totally guessed because there is no reference. You need some meter in your shoe to get a baseline. So what do you like to do with random number?

    • @pacemaxpro
      @pacemaxpro  2 года назад

      Running power is guessed on every wearable, so is Body Battery and most of the other features for that matter. As for deleting the widget, that won't stop the watch gathering data and therefore it won't help battery life. I mentioned in the video that I haven't done any measurements to back up the 'battery drain' effect but my watch lasts less than a week with around one hour of GPS a day., not sure why.

      As how things are now, I'd go with the Fenix 7. The FR955's battery life needs to be sorted out before I can wholeheartedly recommend it. You miss out on HRV and Training Readiness by getting the Fenix but at least it looks more premium.

      It's inevitable that wearables are getting more and more features as time goes on. Pressure from other manufacturers and customers push companies to add more features, otherwise, they'll fall behind the competition. I use probably 10-20% of all the features on a watch at any given point 🤷

I appreciate any feedback you can offer thank you.

    I have a bad experience with F5 and F6 series especially on GPS accuracy, unsure if that's the metallic bezel/case. I am looking for 955 non-solar rather than F7, with almost similar features less sapphire which I will get a screen protector for 955. What do you think ?

    Hey Matt, thanks for the video. In your conclusions you recommend the FR255, which I am thinking of an replacement for my vantage v1. But I am pretty used to the touchscreen and you are pointing out that you like the touchscreen of the FR955. So I am a bit trapped. What would you recommend? FR255 or 955? Or even vantage v2 (but no multi band GPS) thanks

      Thanks for watching the video! I'd absolutely recommend the 255, especially if you don't care about touchscreen. If you like Polar, I'd also recommend the Pacer Pro. I'm waiting for the Ignite 3 to arrive at the moment, that might be a good option, too

    Wrong. I am not a hard-core athlete but I need the 955 because of the mapping. There is no other watch that offer real full topo mapping with real turn by turn navigation and point of interests like the 955 at this price point. Coros battery is really good but the map is a joke. I just really hope Gamin makes the 955 user interface a little bit more like the Fenix 7, but other than that no complains.
