Honestly, this idea of needing seamless transition between tracks to make an album "cohesive" or whatever is simply a structure we've fallen into. It's what is expected because we've perpetuated this as ideal. I fucking love the fact that, on this album, one second I'm being quietly told that it's ok to cry and the next I'm being slammed into aggressive, sexy, avant, dirty filth. It affects [me] the listener. It's jarring and forceful and that's what I like about it. Unapologetic, just like I think Sophie was; not giving two shits about structure and expectations.
Is he really talking about that though? I feel like he's talking about the overall arch and how to place songs on an album to make the experience the best it could possibly be. Like storytelling. Or graphic design. Or a rollercoaster. Pick your metaphor. A "good" transition can mean anything from seamlessly going from one song to another like it's a froggin meddley, to the complete opposite: going from white noise to complete silence followed by a fart. That's not what he's critiquing i think. He's talking more about the overall flow. A tracklist doesn't have to follow any rules or convention, but the order is still going to matter because we are humans and we can't help how we perceive time and process emotions and make memories. Just a thought, we still love the album! I'm just fucking sad she died :(
Abbey Road is one of the most cohesive and well-flowing albums I've ever listened to, and that thing has She's So Heavy (the darkest song on the album) placed meticulously right before the brightest and most innocent song (Here Comes The Sun). It's probably the most jarring transition I've ever heard on a well-praised commercial album and it's so ridiculous and obviously deliberate that I can't help but love it. Point is, I think abrasive, erratic tracklist transitions can be cool and artful in good hands. It's why I love Radiohead's Kid A. I get kind of the same feel with this Sophie album.
You really get it. Ppl just need to change their framework of what makes "a perfect album"

the order of the tracks actually seems very intentional and makes perfect sense to me as a trans woman, the progression of emotions they evoke kind of echo what I went through and I think she did that on purpose.

1:50 I personally take the order of the songs and they’re context this way: if you listen to the album with a trans person’s perspective you can understand “it’s ok to cry” as when you start getting to find something about yourself that might be hard to accept, then you have ponyboy wich is where you’re getting more secure and start exploring your sexuality. Faceshopping is when you decide to transition and take control of your body and life and it just makes sense that its followed by “is it cold in the water?” Because its a big step and you might feel scared, overwhelmed, and unsure of what’s coming in the future. Infatuation is about finally loving who you are and achieving your ideal self but of course there will be moments where you’ll doubt yourself and feel down, wich leads us to “not ok”. After all this emotional rollercoaster we settle down and enter a self-contemplative phase at “pretending” where we assure ourselves this is what’s rights, who we were before was all pretending. After all this psychological storm comes “immaterial” to chear us up and tell us we are who we are and we can’t let ourselves neither anyone else makes us doubt it. The transitioning and self acceptance are complete and now we just keep goin, we have our whole life ahead of us, it’s a “whole new world” now that we became who we always were inside but trapped in the wrong skin.
in conclusion: its a really genius and up-down emotional roller coaster masterpiece.
It's Okay To Cry is equivalent to that feeling of my mom singing me lullabies while I was still in the womb.

The vocalist on a huge chunk of the songs is Cecile Believe. A lot of critics aren’t giving her credit where credit is due
She is actually very talented. I love how her voice sounds so generic and mainstream, yet I can't recall any artists that sound like her. I really hope SOPHIE and Cecile keep working together because they make beautiful work.

So I'm a pretentious douche. BUT it's because I take music really fuckin seriously. There are very few albums I love, literally. This one though? I wish I could go back in time to listen to this album again for the first time. I enjoy music of all kinds man. I grew up on rock and metal and funk. I like black metal and hip hop. All that shit. But MAN. This is in my top 5 of all time.

9.0/10 for me, the ambient parts are something else. And these mechanical, robotic loud hyperpop cuts are so unique
I love how confusing this album is, I like the uncohesion if the tracklist here, makes it feel even more sincere and personal. This album changed me, I renember listening to Faceshopping for the first time and being like "this is pop music?", was a real turning moment to me. The best and most inventive album of the 10's imo, pop music will never be the same again.

I think it's structurally fairly immersive if you treat "It's Okay to Cry" as a foreword and everything from ponyboy onwards as the album proper.
I think that track is important as a primer for basic bitches like me who don't fully understand her experience or where exactly the lines between art, politics, identity and spirituality are being drawn, and who obsess, probably irrationally, over what we're expected or allowed to feel, perceive or express when confronted with the unfamiliar.
To me she's speaking to us and to her own fearful inner-self, saying: "This is who I am, this is what my voice, this is how I've found myself. It's okay if you can't see me, it's okay if I can't see you. Maybe we'll never see each other. I love you anyway, and I only hope that you can find it in your heart to love me too, not for our choices or appearances, but for the humanity we share."
