Very helpful. Thank you! I inherited my Dad's 1937 Companion drill press with mortising attachment and also, thought that the drill bit went up inside the chisel. Now, I know better. Apparently, there was a learning curve for my Dad too. One of the chisels was replaced, as it was pretty burned up.
You're welcome! Great to have tools from your Dad!
Good video. Thank you for the information on the bit positions. I didn't understand that clearance was necessary. Have a good weekend.
Thanks Glenn. I'm off this week so having fun doing a few projects.
Mine sounds so quiet , like a quiet fan …it’s new, should it be louder ? It’s almost too good to be true and now I’m concerned lol
Mine has always sounded like that. They probably have improved them. Thanks Kris!
Mine makes the same noise when turned on. If I push the chisel forward a little, that metal on metal rubbing sound is gone. It turns out, as soon as I tighten down the chisel, the screw pushes it back a tiny bit, but auger bit stays in center. So bit is scraping the front of chisel. After a few cuts, the chisel and auger bit get really hot. I tried oil to reduce friction between them, but as soon as wood chips are hollowed out, it starts rubbing again. Have you done anything to counter this?
I haven't done anything to correct it. I think with the design it's inevitable that it will rub somewhere. There isn't a lot of force on it so I don't think it's a real problem for the short periods it runs when not pushing wood. Thanks for the comment!
Soat Mon My machine has a collar insert for hollow chisel. I put a strip of paper to the back side of that collar to push it forward a tiny bit. Now that collar is jammed in quail with no slop at all. When I secure hollow chisel bit in, that screw cannot push it back, and it centers with auger bit perfectly. When I turn machine on, there is no scraping noise, and bit does not get hot as fast.
@@What_Other_HobbiesGreat tip! I have the same issue.
I just bought one used that is missing the gas spring to hold up the head. I don't see it on yours. Would you say it's an expendable part? Not sure if I will replace it.
Mine doesn't have one because it died. It's pretty heavy without it and you have to hold it up the whole time which means you only have one hand to position the part you are mortising. I haven't replaced it but if I used it a lot I definitely would. Good luck with your new machine.
@@SoatMon Thanks for the reply!!
Wouldn't a router accomplish the same result?
Yes it will and much cheaper but slower and leaves a rounded end. I also would have had trouble getting them this deep.
sounds kinda loud
