I just bought a mortising machine and the best tip of this video was the explanation at the beginning about changing the chip depth based on power of the machine, wood density, etc. I did not know that and now I know why my mortising was not as easy as it should have been. Thanks!
This is exactly what I needed. Excellent tutorial and explanation.
Thanks for watching!
2022 and still informative. great video!
Excellent information and video. Thanks for posting.
Great and thorough explanation!
What if my stock was wider than my JET mortiser can handle? I am trying to put a mortise in a 2x10 but the depth of travel will not allow me to get that board under the chisel. Is there a work-around for this?
great machine
So how would you sharpen that chisel? Or are you just forced to buy a new one?
I presume that noise I can hear is the auger bit making contact with the inside of the chisel ?
Would it be a lot quicker clearing it out with a router then just cutting the ends with a mortising machine?
We can't say for sure, as there are often a variety of ways to get a specific woodworking task done. Whether two separate set ups and operations would be faster is something to determine by trial and error.
Is there supposes to be a video here? I can hear the audio, but only the teaser photo is available. Still picture, no video.
nice

Can a router do the same thing?
Many people do cut mortises with a router and have good success. One disadvantage to a router is that it leaves the end of the mortise rounded to the radius of the bit’s diameter. For that reason a woodworker would either need to shape the tenons to fit the configuration of the mortise, or use a sharp chisel to square up the ends of the mortise.
Thanks for the reply
Why wouldn't you align the chisel to the fence instead of the work piece
Since the work piece is flat against the fence it ends up being the same without potentially dulling the chisel by contacting it to the metal fence...
360p? Is it 1987 again?
You can get plenty of information out of this video and you complain about the most unimportant part of it..
@@hunjoey Just like you are complaining that I am complaining?!?! Still a free country? In a wolrd of 4k they choose to upload a imformation video that makes them money in less than standard definition. Why would you go through the effort and have it turn out crappy? Is that how you do your woodworking?
I'm guessing that the video was actually filmed years ago. The presentation was so well done and the info is still as relevant as ever, so they just kept the video and uploaded it. Works for me!

I have never heard someone use all three key spots to get even pressure...
Common practice back in the day, before the introduction of key less chucks. You have to understand the mechanics of a chuck in order to see why it is done that way, and why it makes such a difference.
