- Here's my speedrun of God of War II's fastest possible category - Bonus Play, easy-mode, using bonus items. It's almost four minutes faster than Exe's previous WR 1:13:19.
I set out to make a run of this game since it had too many known improvements and no one else was running it seriously right now. So I went around the game, did a lot of groundwork, practiced and then started doing attempts. My original goal was to get sub 1:10, and it only took 29 attempts to get there, so I got it done relatively quickly.
This run still has many flaws, and the optimization could be taken even further. With less mistakes and more time saves you could lower the time to 1:08 for sure. But I'd hope some other, more dedicated runner would take it from here. My point was to just show the new route, break my personal goal and also annoy Exe by claiming his record for now.

New speed tech:
- AQ infinite jump is used to speed up jumps around the game.
- I use controlled quick rolling as suggested by findlestick to steer Kratos around better.
- I use s1 cancelling to speed Kratos' movement in places that are too cramped for rolling. This trick is still not used everywhere it would save time.
- I hold block while leaping off some grapple points to have more speed for Kratos. Don't know if it is actually faster.

General notes:
- I started this attempt the first thing in the morning, so you'll notice some drowsy playing and sloppiness here and there.
- I put music fairly quiet since GoW 2 music tends to get monetized.
- I used the swimming glitch routes from findle's segmented run, since they're safe enough to use even in a RTA.

Commentary:
- start of the game probably has the most flaws. Worst thing was the slow rafters skip and some strange fumbling with almost every jump inside Colossus.
- a subtle new timesave when leaving Colossus: with a correct setup you can roll off-camera at the start of the "weakened walk", saving at least 9 secs.
- Typhon's Cavern was merely pretty good. Had some dumb time losses in there.
- 1st swimming glitch is not too bad with the new setup. However, it still took 3 tries to get it for some reason.
- otherwise Temple of Lahkesis and Steeds went well.
- used AQ IJ for 2nd swimming glitch since I strongly dislike the NG method of getting swimming here.
- sadly, my 100% safe setup for the Atlas lava jump killed Kratos. It was definitely less safe than advertised.
- at least I got other tricks right the first time in Atlas. The new long jumps before Ascension of Atlas are among my favorite new tricks in the route.
- The Palace of the Fates is not bereft of occasional sloppiness either. Damn, is there no level in this run I can say I'm perfectly happy with?
- I do a PR jump before 2nd Translator because a BH jump usually glitches out for me here.
- fumbled at the vent puzzle skip and had to watch the boring cutscene. Fortunately this is not such a big time loss, but since it's a new skip in this route, it would've been nice to get it right.
- devised a new fight strat against Kraken. It's one of the rare cases PR comes in handy in a fight.
- The Temple of the Fates... again, pretty good. Some slowness.
- did some small choking at endurance run. Did a too long high jump to skip first big wave and completely forgot buttons in the second big wave. But I got over it pretty quick.
- after having a previous good run attempt end at Clotho skip, I played it 100% safe and used Amulet there.
- Zeus fight went well, aside bad RNG in first part. Even got the last phase skip which isn't 100% reliable.
- another small choke at final mirror jump, where I start doing a wrong high jump. But that's only a small time loss.

General: Firstly I can appreciate the amount of work that went into this, resulting in a great time, and a great run to watch. Quite like the new IJ, so much faster. Very good handling of Kratos, not only in terms of utilizing correct speedrolling methods, but you also fought for every second. I also like the Square cancelling+bow tactic. When I first did a speedrun of this game, I watched shen's vids, and his handling of Kratos was superb. It's the first thing I look for now in any GoW speedrun. But I always found that good handling was lacking from modern GoWII RTA speedruns, but this run has finally brought good handling to GoWII RTA.
5:31 - 5:36 -Good controlled speedrolling.
6:19 -Makes sense to use sword instead of hammer, good.
9:31 -Good time saver.
10:41 -It's the little things that make a great speedrun.
11:39 -I always found these Pegasus sections such a chore, as well as the brief visit to Typhon's cavern, pity they can't be skipped (as far as we know).
14:15 -The wall of death! So easy to get pushed off there.
15:25 -I only recently noticed this, I prefer it so much more to the old tactic.
16:15 -The other day I remembered that I once tried to skip directly back to Pegasus from here, but the area beyond the Rage-door isn't loaded (I'm 99% sure).
16:22 -Good time saver.
16:41 -Wish there was a faster way to do this part.
17:46 -Dicing with the wall of death, that was close.
22:34 -One of the most finicky skips in the whole game, but this new tactic of yours is extremely high percentage.
23:09 -So glad you went for this route, there are enough visual cues around to get to the next area without having to go over high walls etc.
23:23 -This puddle is unnecessarily tricky to touch.
23:33 -I like it, finally this skip in an RTA.
*Steeds of Time* -Tidy.
28:10 -Although minor, I've got a soft spot for this skip.
29:01 -Good time saver.
3:11 -Should try to find swimming glitch here somehow.
30:54 -You've become proficient at this IJ.
31:20 -No swim-rush?
32:02 -*Behind* the wall, glad you used this route.
32:24 -I remember trying to stay oob for the next area, but from memory the game places you back inbounds. And then trying to swim back oob (as some form of shortcut to the next area) takes nearly as long as just taking an inbounds route.
34:21 -You probably know there's a brief moment, after landing, when you can do one roll forward.
34:55 -Good use of the (name?) square cancel+bow for this.
35:24 -No Icarus lift? Guess it takes the same amount of time, and the floor above isn't very high anyway.
37:14 -The moment I'd been waiting for since the start of the run, some juicy new skips...
37:26 -Annnnd...he sticks the landing, well done.
37:30 -*Holds breath*
37:50 -And congratz on pulling off both these skips for the first time ever in any GoWII speedrun.
38:42 -I'm guessing partially skipping some of Atlas' hand is a bit dicey, especially considering the great time you're making.
39:01 -There's a way to teleport from this spot, directly up to Atlas' palm, I recently tested it and can get Kratos to zip around oddly. But am yet to get all the way up there, let alone do it consistently...maybe one day.
42:48 -Nice, the way it should be done.
42:57 -Thank you Double-glide, another skip I've a soft spot for.
48:32 -I too noticed the lag for the hammer jump here, I usually pause the game to give it time to load stuff.
49:50 -At least it's not a big time penalty.
50:49 -Good.
53:02 -Right platform instead of left?
53:18 -The correct roll-angle towards the lever.
*Kraken* -PR looks to have combat use at last.
56:49 -Annnnd...slo-mo negated.
*Endurance run* -I guess at this point - with such a good time so far - heart must've been in the throat...

1:09:27 -I personally count the final time at this moment when the menu is open, since it's pretty consistent, as soon as a time is displayed, that is the final time. I'd count the time 1:09:16 (approx).
Congratz, this run will keep any future speedrunner honest.
The run still has some awkward quick rolling moments where I go to wrong directions... not a big time waste, but they look ugly.
6:10 - I mentally thought of it as "use either BH or BoO" since both have strong enough square-attacks to knock out Colossus.
16:22 - meh, it might save more time to do the fight without distractions since it only takes 1 sec to shoot the rope down from closer to it. But it looks pretty cool.
22:34 - yeah, it shouldn't be difficult any more with this setup. The timing for double jumps is more lenient and you always start the jump at same point, making the angle slightly more predictable too (in theory).
23:09 - yep. I just swim low enough for screen to go black (to not hit fight trigger). Then swim a little bit to right (to not get stuck in the climbing wall collision). Then after two dashes swim up, it's pretty easy.
23:33 - the new jump also makes it a bigger timesave than before.
31:20 - I was under the impression that dash doesn't give more height for moving upwards... or am I wrong? So basically I just prioritize swimming up / down in this section instead of dashing.
34:20 - tried to do it, but if I start this section with BH in hands, it's difficult to get it consistently.
34:55 - this trick (s1 cancelling? that's what I usually call it) could still be better optimized by landing earlier and doing it some more. I played it a bit safe here.
35:24 - well, the jump needed is low and it's an opportunity to switch back to PR, so just a small CR jump it is.
38:44 - back when I was routing the game I thought it was too difficult to start AQ IJ from the climbing wall, but now I could probably do it. So doing that skip here would be a potential improvement.
49:50 - yep, it's far worse if a runner gets Kratos killed in this part, like gliding out of bounds while reaching the vent area or hitting the slidy collision en route to the chest platform after doing the jump. Since it sends you back to Siren Sacrifice...
53:02 - hmm, so the right platform can be skipped? Damn. This was just pure muscle memory then.
1:01:50 - I don't know if it is truly helpful to use Head here. After all, the fight's timing is reliant on the legionnaires more than anything else, so just doing AQs might kill them slightly faster while taking care of Cyclops on the side. I guess I did less route testing towards the end of the run...
1:08:46 - well, this game isn't Ascension after all. Random softlocks and game breaking glitches don't have such a realistic chance of ruining one's run.
GoW 2 keeps quite a good track of time, although I guess it starts the timing a little later than a RTA does, resulting in a lower time. (RTA starts timing when the player pushes X final time when starting new game. In-game starts ticking at the end of the main menu intro, I guess?)

46:48 this seems like such a good area to escape with a high jump. Have all options been exhausted in terms of attempts to escape this area? It looks like it may save a lot of time
This room is possible to skip entirely, but the area up ahead won't be loaded. Completing this fight seems to be necessary for things to load. Also, escaping the fight while it's ongoing seems very difficult since the corridor has a ceiling - not sure if it's even possible.

+AKheon Well I wouldn't say I've done an actual speedrun, but when I play this game I like to practice the strategies I've seen in your videos in case I do try to speedrun. But I did do a NUR a while ago to see how challenging it was (and it was a pain in the ass, can't imagine doing PAIN+), but most recently it's been speedrun strats, so I can do them easily when I do an actual speedrun.
+AKheon And it's been specifically GoW 2, which is my favorite one, but I have done some stuff in Ghost of Sparta and GoW 1.

Thanks. I actually didn't use splits when running GoW 2, I just used Livesplit as a regular timer.

Hey AKheon, awesome run! Watching your infinite jump at the fate mirror was interesting, can you explain how you did that specific IJ? You did two BHIJ's then simply swapped to each sub weapon and it looked liked you only jumped between each one. How is this done?
A new infinite jump was discovered maybe a year back called Atlas Quake infinite jump.
I start the jump at the mirror with the old-fashioned BHIJ to get a bit of extra height, then switch to AQIJ because it's faster. If you're interested on how it's done, there exists multiple tutorials nowadays.

The Hammer infinite jump is in some ways easier to do on PS3, since you don't have to worry about the loading times.

Hmm, can't really comment on Speedrunslive rules. But at least on the leaderboards, it varies game by game if emulators are allowed, if they are their own separate category, or not allowed at all. So far God of War-runs are allowed to use emulators, even though it is not the best way to play these games.

at 2nd translator skip you use glide 2 times even after the performing the second jumpe I mean triangel ,x,R2,L1 how you do that
If you mean the technique Double Glide jump that is used around the game, it's done by holding X as Kratos runs off a ledge. Then you get two glides while you are in air.
Or if you're referring to something else, can you give me the time where it is?

hey man, how do you perform the glitch in 37:34?
It's a double glide jump followed by normal SoD long jump, with also some PR long jumping to extend it before finally gliding to the other platform. I'm not sure there is an easy way to explain it...
Double glide jump is just holding down X as you run off the platform. This makes Kratos start a glide that can still be followed by two jumps and a glide.

hello akheon man I found out, a new skip in this god of war 2, is basically a new route for the swinless category, but this skip is not yet 100% completed by the fact that I still don't know how to perform the atlas quake jump, and how most already know you and the super findlestick is not part of that part of glitchs / skips so because I have a lot of interest in your content, I would like to ask you for help in this glitch, in case if you could continue my idea please if the idea will have success or we don’t know but if you can complete it without a doubt you could post it on your channel, as well as the other tricks comprénde so if you can at least try to see if it will continue you would be very grateful Akheon, I humbly hope your answer?
Hey. From what I watched of your video, you're talking about skipping Barbarian King, etc. using the same route like in any%, except with high jumps instead. I'm somewhat busy with other stuff at the moment, so I'm not returning to glitching God of War II just yet. Good luck with the research, though.

Doing the AQ infinite jump is much slower on PS2, and it's a difficult trick in general. Therefore I suggest that for the swimming glitch, use findlestick's classic tactic:

To do findlestick's tactic, you just have to roll in a specific way to hit a small collision flaw and fall through it. You may have to try many, many times before you get it - it's quite hard to hit.
