- I wanted to make another speedrun of God of War in better video quality, so I did a few offline recordings this morning. And I got this time.
Sub 1:25! It seems the new optimizations like upgrading stuff during loading times and getting BoA lv. 2 paid off. There are also no really major mistakes here, so I'm happy with this run. Read below for some comments.
My splits for the run are:
Aegean Sea - 5:02 (+17.7)
Medusa - 9:41 (+16.3)
Desert - 19:05 (-8.5)
Temple - 22:51 (-1:00)
CoA start - 27:52 (-53.3)
Ladder - 32:41 (-59.0)
Trident - 37:53 (-1:28)
Balls of Fire - 43:40 (-1:10)
Guardian - 46:56 (-1:04)
AoH - 49:33 (-1:36)
CoM - 54:54 (-1:55)
River Styx - 1:03:57 (-2:07)
Ares - 1:13:44 (-4:04)
New GoW - 1:24:57 (-4:49)
1. Aegean Sea.
- first fight was messy, but at least I got a fast Hydra 1 kill.
- I pick up the orb chest on the way. There are two reasons: first is that opening a chest disables the annoying tutorial message when doing the Hydra 2 skip. Second is that orb-wise this new route is slightly unreliable, so some extra orbs won't hurt.
- the Hydra 2 skip was pretty slow. Had bad luck there.
- PR / Big Hydra skip was slightly slow too.
2. To Medusa
- BoC has to be upgraded to lv. 2 before Medusa, and I get a good amount of orbs for this purpose from the speed chess mini-game.
- in the previous run I skip the RotG-tutorial message by upgrading BoC to lv. 2 at the save point. It might not be worth it, so I don't do it here.
- There's a new swimming optimization when entering the Medusa room.
3. To Desert
- Medusa fight went decently.
- I thought to pick up another chest on the way, but I fall and it doesn't work out.
- I use a few new swimming optimizations on the way, like at the Square.
- MG has to be lv. 2 before the end of Desert. So I start upgrading it during the loading time before reaching the Square.
- killing the two Cyclops is a part of the orb route. But the problem is that these two foes release a variable amount of orbs... so if you get unlucky here, you won't have enough orbs after all.
- the ladder out of the Sewer is a hidden loading spot and can be used for upgrading.
- there are two other short loading times on the way to the Desert. I use them for upgrading, even though they may be too short to be worth it. Finally, I upgrade MG to lv. 2 during the Desert loading time.
5. To CoA start
- there's a pretty long loading time before reaching the Temple yard...
- there's a decent loading time when entering Temple of the Crystal Eye, so I use it to upgrade BoC some more.
6. To Ladder
- there's some loading time before you can open the Atlas room door...
- there's a small optimization in the Atlas room jumps.
- there's a loading time when returning to the Rings...
7. To Trident
- I mess up climbing up the ladder and lose maybe 10 seconds.
- there is a HUGE loading time before reaching CoP, so I use this time to finish upgrading BoC for black-out glitch.
- a small new timesave in the wall shimmy part.
- BoA lv. 2 is got since it doesn't waste much extra time, and it also makes some fights near the end of the run faster.
8. To Balls of Fire
- the Trident room jump didn't work out on the first try.
- going out of bounds at CoP was a bit sluggish. The camera also wasn't optimal for the swimming part.
- it seems I failed to utilize the CoP exit loading time. Maybe there is a pre-loading trigger at the start of the swim tunnel that I didn't hit?
9. To Guardian
- there is a loading time before reaching upstairs...
- I played it too safe in the Balls corridor and missed a cycle.
- there's loading before reaching the boss arena, so I use that time to upgrade BoA to lv. 2.
10. To AoH
- BoA lv. 2 saves something like 3-4 seconds against Guardian, which still isn't much. It becomes more useful later.
- the jump downstairs has a new optimization.
12. To River Styx
- there's loading time uphill...
- at the bridge, I use a single LAM jump to get across. This probably saves a little time.
- using small long jumps at rope crossing saves some time.
- there's a long loading spot before reaching the Tomb...
- Tomb Skip was decent, although I had to re-try the first jump.
- there's loading when falling down the elevator shaft. So I just go ahead and upgrade AoH to lv. 2 here.
13. To Ares
- got shot down at the moving platforms once!
- BoA lv. 2 helps a LOT in the Satyr fight. But I still leave this part early because there is a delay before the final Satyrs spawn.
- new setup for gravedigger black-out glitch.
14. To end
- BoA lv. 2 allows a new speed tactic against Ares. AoH should only be cast as a counter attack.
- using RotG in the clone fight start is worth it since the first clones are stronger.
- after beating the game I retry in hopes of going checking out my in-game time. But I get softlocked instead...

Fun fact if you use the game shark on the ps2 edition of god of war. YOu have caused a game breaking glitch that if you clash swords with aries you will crash your game. THe game will be on an unlimited loop that corrupts your data to friezing when ever you clash swords with final battle aries not the first part the second part of the boss fight will continuously freeze if you try to fight aries with unlimited health cheat activated. Even with or with out the gameshark after you have saved your data with that cheat or any cheats in god of war. The game will autimatically freeze when ever you clash swords with aries during the final part of his battle. the part where you have to press circle and deblock his sword for kratos to hit aries the game crashes when you press circle.

i mimic everything you do up to and once you're initially through the wall. once i lose sight of your character i have no idea what you're supposed to do from there. i was never able to pull this off on the ps3 and ive ran into that roadblock once again >.
59:12 from what I can see, you do a really small jump off the ground right into a BoA air square combo. I have attempted to replicate the same setup but I cant cancel the initial jump momentum. Also is the fuse glitch (switching weapons midair) almost essential to this run? Its my most difficult basic trick to learn. I've got blades high jump and BoA long jump, but the fuse jump just seems like so much is going on.
The small jump at the start is for LAM glitch (Lenient Air Momentum). If Kratos lands in the middle of certain air moves like L1+X, his next jump will get extra positive momentum and you can get much further with it.
The fuse glitch is necessary for doing the biggest possible jumps. It's simpler than you might imagine: after doing Medusa's Gaze blast in air, hold L1 and do an air special (usually L1+X). For some reason Kratos reverts back to BoC just for this one air special. You can use double jump after it, which isn't possible with any BoA attacks. After the double jump, Kratos is back to wielding BoA automatically, and you can continue with BoA jump motions.

reaper15th It's just a strange speed tactic discovered by satvara. There is a precise time where the Guardian doesn't know to evade logs thrown at him, and you can do this repeatedly to skip all phases of the fight.
scratch that last comment. i did EXACTLY what u did and got into the next area no problem. however still dont know what u mean by mintotaurs banging on a door and a critical checkpoint that i have to trigger. show me what u mean by referrencing the exact time in ur video that i should be paying attention to. thanx again man. its cool that u reply and dont seem to mind all my questions
Well, as you have found out, God of War is built around loading triggers and it's really important to know where they are as you swim through the area or else your progress is halted.
The loading trigger that loads the Road to Athens is behind the last set of doors before the ladder that leads down to the exit.

Yeah, that jump is pretty precise one. It becomes easier if you try to line up your jump with the ropes. I hear Exe is planning on doing a full tutorial on God of War 1 pretty soon, so hang on until then.

odd... ive found the door u were referencing but the floor is still dropping below me, not allowing me to advance. could the fact that i skipped the medusa fight entirely and went straight for this last area have anything to do with the game not allowing me to advance? if not than i have no clue what im doing wrong cuz im doing everything i c u do in the video

Taco Ninja I've never tried the Vita version, so I can't say for certain. I have heard that it has different physics / heavier gravity that is a liability when high jumping, though.

To any one trying to replicate this on the PS Vita, I can confirm that I've been able to do everything he's done, so basically there's no difference between the PS 3 and the Vita.

At first I do the square combo. Later on I do the circle attack interrupted with a quick block.

...like in the very begining soon after getting off the boat u swam through the entire lvl. ive been try to repricate what u do but i cant get it to work...how on earth did u do this???
That trick can only be done the first time you exit the boat and see the intro cutscene. When you're exiting the boat, hold L-stick to the right so that Kratos runs and starts hanging on the ledge to the right. This way a new checkpoint is created while Kratos is hanging on the ledge. Now when you retry, Kratos falls down through the water surface during loading time and you start below the boat. It's a simple trick to do once you learn it.

I can't go past the floor like displayed at 21:00 does this work on the God of War collection bundle? I've tried for over half hour this, also how do you roll so quickly?
+Elias Chavz There is only a small hole in the wall / ground from which to fall through, it was lucky I got it the first time in this run. Just have to do a Hermes Stomp to a correct area to fall through. This was played on the HD Collection, so it does work.
Normal quick rolling is done by buffering a melee attack between each roll, but after getting Blades lv. 2 you can do the rollrush movement I do for most of the run. It's basically roll -> R1 cancelled into another roll with X while holding down R-stick -> repeat.

yeah i finally figured that one out. now im stuck at 13:28 in ur video cuz i have no idea how u were able to bypass this area and get to "the road to athens". does the fact that i completely bypassed the mudusa fight have anything to do with me not being able to advance like u did at the start of 13:28 in the video? ty for ur responce btw. wasnt expecting u to, tbh.
You mean, you are swimming but have difficulties getting to Road to Athens? There is a loading trigger right behind the wooden door that has Minotaurs banging to it, so you have to hit it for the next area to load.

A 5 anos atrás já era de um nível surpreendente
can u point out time wise where in ur video this loading trigger is with minotaurs banging on the door cuz ive been stuck on this part literally for over 6 hrs. atm im not on my speed run for the trophy but im just trying to get used to doing all the shortcuts so im a bit more prepared when it comes time to do it.
The loading trigger is as I reset the camera and Kratos is behind the minotaur doors at 13:31.
What's the problem? If the inside of the Gates doesn't load, you've missed a loading trigger in the yard (in air where you'd later shoot the rope). If the Road to Athens doesn't load, you've missed the trigger at the minotaur doors.
ive noticed another problem as well: at 13:16 in the video when i do what u do, the next area never appears. idk what happened because it used to and now it doesnt. ive never been so frustrated trying to do something in a game. a normal person would give up cuz it isnt worth the aggravation. but nope, not me! lol. it pisses me off so much it only makes me more determined to do it!

I agree, getting the trophy is easy enough by just playing on easy and knowing what to do.
guess what AK? ive managed to follow ur speedrun all the way to the Desert of lost Souls using all ur glitches! wasnt so hard after all. BUT.... ive hit another roadblock and im doing what ur doing but nothing happens. at exactly 21:00 in ur video u do a "Hermes Stomp" straight into and through the ground into the sublevel below. care to share this lil magic trick with me? lol
There is a small collision flaw in the wall that you can get through with either a Hermes Rush or a Stomp. You need to hit the wall in the correct spot with a good angle, and Kratos falls through.
um... how did u beat the final part of the Ares boss battle in like, TWO second???
If he decides to use the stone smashing attack, he is very vulnerable. Not to mention that in this category Kratos does maximum damage with each attack.

Getting to the Pandora's Temple means that about a third of the game is behind you.

at 25:17 in ur video ive managed to get inside the wall a couple times but can get on the staircase, resulting in my death. u make these glitches look easy. once in the wall i notice u jump a couple times. i do it and still cant get on the staircase

correct me if im wrong but it looks as though ur doing square, square, o and than using magic. rinse and repeat.
The high jump I use on this video relies on good air momentum for it to work. You always have to start using the BoA air attacks as soon as possible after a jump to actually rise upwards during them.
To do a BoC air attack in the middle of the combo, you have to do a Medusa's Gaze blast, then hold block. This makes Kratos switch back to BoC attacks. If you haven't yet used your double jump, you can use it now after a BoC special attack to reset your air moment and gain even more height.
Sometimes I also glitch my initial air momentum by doing a special attack (MG blast or BoC L1+X) right before landing on ground. Now the next jump Kratos does is extra floaty and he can rise much higher up than normal.

Well, if you're stuck in the Stomp animation, you can't use a double jump. Therefore it's better to do a very careful Hermes Rush or a Stomp from a low jump to hit some floor before dropping down. Anything to not fall down in the Hermes Stomp animation.

+Ryuga The Dragon There are three reasons:
1, Tyrhhjy's 30-minute run uses cheats, starting the game with all gear (including Poseidon's Trident) and everything maxed out. For its defense, you could say it's a comparable category to true New Game+ of GoW 2 for instance, although accomplished with cheats. (GoW 1 doesn't have a "real" NG+ mode, we just call costume runs that because it's the closest things there is.)
2, his run is heavily segmented, while this run is a RTA, which means it was done in a single sitting.
3, his run aims for in-game time, which doesn't take into account things like loading times, FMVs and in general acts pretty weird at times. We don't use in-game time anymore for GoW runs for that reason.
+AKheon So, what he did is not a speedrun? So the speedrun for gow 2 by findlestick is not count? Because he finish it in 2 sitting

Segmented runs are just a different run category from Real-Time Attacks, both have a purpose, but they're not necessarily comparable.
Tycoonius gives the same attack power boost as Ares Armor, while additionally streamlining the orb collection by granting a ton of extra orbs for Kratos.
Oh, thankz for the info master, i don't know many thing about the speedrun and all of it's word. And can you tell me what kind of gameplay that count as speedrun? Cause I want to make one (god of war series specially)

You need to have positive air momentum, then just do BoA air attacks (square and circle) and interrupt them with Medusa's Gaze air attack. Then repeat. Helps to have regenerating magic to do it for longer.

When I go to 16:55, I cross the sword, and instead of teleporting to the sewers level, I hit a wall, and then randomly about a minute later it loads. Really frustrating when doing a speedrun.
Ah, you mean when going on foot? If you go too fast, you can go past the trigger that takes you to sewers. In that case I think it helps if you take some steps back to hit that trigger, instead of staying inside the doorway.
No, I mean swimming like you did. It seems the game is taking extra long to load the level. I'm thinking it has to do with the route I used to swim past the Oracle saving puzzle (I went from above, and you went from below)
Ah, alright. It's difficult to hit the sewers trigger from the front of the sewer gate while swimming. That's why I swim above the gate and hit it from the other side. Could that be your problem?
I did some testing and it seems this is the problem indeed. I had already tried going around the wall but not in the exact way you did in the video, now I copied your movement and got it. Thanks for helping.

Even when I did this speedrun back on the PS3 I never understood how you were able to pull the lever over and over again during the fight with the Pandora Guardian (47:30). Care to share your secret on this one, lol?
Taco Ninja You have to activate the switch once at a precise time when the previous log is shooting. If you did it right, the Guardian's animation glitches up and he is vulnerable to repeated logs.
I recall that I couldn't find the timing for the trick at all on PS2, but then it suddenly clicked for me on PS3 - not sure if there is actually a timing difference between ports. On PS3 I think you had to pull the switch when the previous log is roughly over the Guardian. It's not a difficult trick once you understand the timing.
Hey i played the story now on the ps3 and i need the trophie "play the story in under 5 hours" but i dont know how to do the wall glitches. Can you tell me which button combination you use ? :D i dont want to play the story normal again.
You can easily get under 5 hours playing on easy and using a costume (Dairy Bastard is the easiest one to use), but if you want to take your gameplay further and learn a few tricks while at it... well, that's nice. I wrote a Glitch FAQ of this game, and it's hosted on GameFAQs. It should explain how the basic techniques like high jumps are done. If you have problems on something specific, feel free to ask.

Wouldn't Tycoonius being already selected in the costume list count as some sort of pre-run setup? What second do you start the timer running?
I'll come back and edit this one with whatever comments I have during the next 30 mins I can watch this.
1:30 - If you're only taking out 2 at a time, s,t is probably faster than o,s and will keep them close so you can collect the orbs. May also give you a combo bonus, for what little that will contribute.
3:00 - Nice to see that you've gotten the hydra skip down to be reliably faster than just killing it.
25:50 - No hidden Morse message?
27:12 - That skull door doesn't block movement until the camera angle shift. No use, just mentioning.
27:35 - Muse door is also passable via proper camera angles, but probably can't get there with them.
- Random curiosity, how close does your path take you to any of the Muse keys? Pretty big payoff if it can be worked in, though I doubt it could. Can't remember where the keys even are right now.
29:20 - Can you jump half over the pit and then grab the wall, or do you fall in?
I start the timer the instant I finally choose the costume and the intro cutscene begins.
I usually use s, t to stray Legionnaires at the start. Grouping them both and killing them with a single s, t is possible, but this needs more practice...
What would be the use of entering through the Muse doorway? I don't think Kratos needs more health, magic or exp in this route.
It's possible to grab a ledge at the end of the pit, but I tend to play it safe.
The EXP from the muse room should carry you through the rest of the game, possibly making it more enticing to skip the rotating room. Extra magic for a few seconds effort would give a better regen buffer. Not saying that's better, just that the concentration of bonuses earned my curiosity.
Hmm. I'm not sure if Kratos is able to escape the rotating room without PR, though. Should be re-checked at some point. Also, with Tycoonius magic does pretty negligible damage compared to your melee attacks and therefore you don't need extra magic.
I remember one Muse key is in CoA Atlas room and wouldn't take more than a few seconds to pick up. Can't remember the rest.
The right path after the rotating room is apparently the next easiest to grab. That would mean an entire extra rotation of the ring to hit the Muse room. Hard to justify.
Edit: Which does leave the theoretical possibility of swim glitching in there with the proper camera angle, but if you're not wasting rotations then you're stuck doing it without the trident (assuming the camera can even be reasonably manipulated).

no,its depending on wich time you get to it, if you get the to the chamber faster,you will find a soldier,if you waste to much time,a zombie.
this was revealed in an enterview with one of the designers
I don't know if it works like that in the NTSC version, but on PAL the caged person is always a zombie, period.

its driving me nuts trying to do this shit. i still have the speed run and challenge of the gods to complete yet. i gave up on this game yrs ago cuz the challenges were just too damn frustrating for me. but now im giving it another go. fk it. if u have any useful glitches for those challenges that would be awesome lol
Taco Ninja Are you talking about getting the speedrun trophy? That should be quite easy since the game counts 5 hours using the in-game timer, which is very inaccurate and easily abusable.
Yeah, the Challenges are kind of rough around the edges and frustrating. I don't have helpful glitches for them, but useful video walkthroughs are bound to exist around RUclips.
