When you realize that, while Kratos was screwed over, he's essentially just the likeable villain of the world... did the gods have it coming? Sure. But he also pretty much destroyed the world just cuz he was pissed off.
Which just makes him more of a Greek protagonist, since they liked showing the human fallacies of even all-powerful immortals. The levels to this series' writing are pretty astounding for a concept as simple as "angry dude fights and kills gods"

It should be noted that the gods in Greek myths did risk wars that caused damage like this amongst each other or whenever they fight Typhon (or maybe Hyperion)

I personally think all the gods had it coming but hades didn't deserve it his whole fight was that kratos killed his wife and so he wanted revenge.

To clarify if anyone's wondering why haephestus gave Kratos the weapons capable of killing him it was a trap, the weapons were a conductor for his electricity and he was essentially going for the 1 hit kill, to bad because Kratos has alot of respect for him

If you think about it.... all this could've be prevented if.... Ares never went to capture Deimos (Kratos brother) for a prophecy that turns into reality because he made it happen, and lying to Kratos and making killing his wife and daughter just to make him a perfect warrior, Athena for lying to Kratos in not telling the truth about what she knew about Kratos life and what the God's did to him.
And Zeus for been too arrogant to kratos promise him to serve the gods for 10 years so his sins can be wash yet after killing Ares, Zeus lie to kratos and made him the new God of war

I think it was more that He used a whole helluva lot of power to make his rocky water mountain monster. Kratos had him by the balls when he plunged straight through it and threw him against a wall, cornering him. I think that's why he tried, and failed, to get off the ledge back into the ocean. Im not sure if he was hoping for maybe a chance to escape, or just wanted a quicker death than Kratos gave. Poseidon is, supposedly, just as strong as Zeus, so I imagine it's a mix of plot convenience to give the game a empowering kickass start. Also, just the reality in the game that Kratos is insanely powerful at that point in the story. Poseidon chose a poor tactic, banking entirely on his Mecha-RockyWaterMountain beast. Left him essentially powerless when he lost it.
