Can testify how good Andy was as a guitarist. But can also see why some musicians have poor hearing. Was in the studio when he was practicing for a new album. His fingers were worn to the bone. But still practiced for hours. Was also a good producer. Doing a lot for Rod Stewart.

The Power Station was a side project for John and Andy Taylor. The duo and Simon LeBon decided to take a break from Duran Duran. The Power Station was originally devised as having a different lead singer, from other groups or solo artists, on each track. Robert Palmer was the first singer to cut the track "Communication." All of the elements in the studio loved the sound. Palmer asked if they had any other material. The only track was "Get It On." It was in the works for Bebe Buell. She wanted to transition from modeling to singing. Robert laid down a vocal. At that moment, it was decided that Robert would be the vocalist for the entire album. Robert did not commit to anything long-term. They performed together on Saturday Night Live. The album was a hit in the UK and the US. The Power Station booked a summer package tour, but they would need a new lead singer because Robert decided to feed off this success both professionally and artistically and create a solo album with the help of Tony Thompson and Andy Taylor called "Riptide" with the track "Addicted to Love."

Thank you for being one of the only literates here.
      Although, don't forget Arcadia.
Roger was really the only one who truly wanted to take a break after all of the initial hysteria.
Happy "the crucial three" didn't take long to reconsider; work with Nile and it was great that Roger's break didn't last forever.
Andy was superfluous from the outset. As Nick had said, "the writing was on the wall" on their very first meeting already... (as per John's autobiography)...
Duran just took a while to absorb and process this one mistakie of their youth...

Yeah especially because it actually sounds like John Taylor is playing an actual trademark John Taylor bass line, as it does throughout this performance. And it got faster and faster and faster... Andy, who no doubt had his line from the track in his head is a little behind the beat and really has to pour on some pyrotechnics to catch up - but catch up he does! And Tony Thompson, what an incredible artist! When John hops up on his platform and starts accelerating, Tony's like "Bring it, Snowman!" and the two of them almost turn this into a Duran Duran song! 😅
And Michael Des Barres is much maligned, but I really like him as a performer and then he does a worthy job of singing here. Except for Madonna, who obviously worked her tail off preparing for this show and who launched her career into a whole new stratum with her performance, none of the singing at Live Aid was all that great. It wasn"t the singers' fault. Everyone was hollering their fool heads off. The sound especially in Philly was problematic at best -- it kept failing, it was simultaneously too loud and not loud enough for the singers' voices to be heard over the distorted din (i note that i only watched it on TV).
I still loved it and remember it fondly though!

Here he was in a room full of young wannabe rockers who want to conquer the world and tour yet he was happy to do few gigs put on couple of songs and then dip to holidays... Palmer was practically pushing late 30s in power station and the energy just didnt match. JT admitted Palmer wasnt rly a mover. The band needed a young energetic lead who had a wish to succeed and be famous. Who knows maybe Palmer felt old and was envious of others youth. I think all of them knew it.

Power station was a group of young guys who wanted to rock. This was both John and Andys wannabe rockstar phase. They did blow and wanted to rip guiter riffs on stage. Andy was a rocker stuck in a pop band previously in DD. John on the other hand was more adaptable and understood you cant have everything and everybody agreeing with you. Lebon and Rhodes went more melodic tone and formed Arcadia. Both of them definitely more drama orianted characters since day one. This is why Andy left. He wanted to be a rockstar lead. John liked the guitar riffing aswell so he went with him. They both know each other so why not try it out. It later turned out a failed project because not everyone was onboard 100%. Palmer was more suave character. He didnt rly want to bother much and besided he was much older than John and Andy who were raging balls of fire at the time. Their energy simply didnt match and the project fell apart. Maybe Michael Des Barres from the beginning was a better option (I dont dislike Robert or his singing) but the band maybe coule have pulled it off if they had a younger more optimistic lead. If the lead has the energy the whole band has it too. Palmer seemed droopy most of the time. JT admitted himself Palmer wasnt rly a mover he was happy to be a cabaret singer with few radio hits. Taylor and the other shorter Taylor on the other hand wanted to conquer the world at this stage... Maybe it worked out for the best because there would be no Duran Duran revamp and we maybe wouldnt have gotten Notorious, Skin Trade and Ordinary World which pretty much cemented DD legacy in the music bizz.

Totally different vocal styles. And fans are clearly eating up MDBs performance. To this day I still think David Lee Roth saw Des Barres (when he was with Silverhead ) and totally ripped off his style (clothes and on stage presence)

Michael des Barres was doing his best in someone else's shoes.
Sure Robert Palmer was a great singer, but I can easily imagine that Michael was not given the liberty to perform in his own style.
Even if that is not the case, it is just not fair to comment against the guy who stood up for the difficult position.
    He shouldn't be judged here.
He should be judged with his own band.

    • @glennkamp4645

You can count on one hand how many of the critics on here ever played in a band on stage let alone fronted it as a fill in . Theres also not a singer alive who could've kept up w that ridiculously fast tempo they were playing it at. 🎱 Anyone?

    • @JC-yz1sf
      @JC-yz1sf 3 года назад +5

@@glennkamp4645 exactly!! I thought MDB was a perfect fill in! He’s extremely talented to be able to step in with about a week’s notice! He learned all the songs in 3 days, did one show and then live aid! Robert Palmer was a fabulous singer, talented, soulful, but no way could he have handled the need for the energy a live show with these guys required. Between the stage presence and the screaming girls, he would’ve been overwhelmed. I know, I saw PS in NJ in 1985. I was one of those screaming girls. We would’ve eaten Palmer alive. Although I truly appreciated the album and his singing our intensity for the Duran guys (especially John Taylor) wouldn’t have been his bag at all.
