The clothing she's wearing was called the "Amadeus look", after the 1984 movie "Amadeus". Lots of shiny brocades, lace, and glittery broaches. My best friend worked in a clothing store at the time and they stocked a whole line of that kind of look.
I remember when this was on television. This was massive. She was skyrocketed bigger and bigger each year. Just when you’d think she was bigger than anyone else she would get even bigger. That had never happened to that degree with a female entertainer before. Not to this degree.
Her voice and dancing are magnificent!! I think she puts all her energy towards this performance to prove that she can sing...after she was snubbed to be part of We Are the World. I always admire people who uses their experience of rejection and heartaches to make something beautiful for themselves, and Madonna is one of them
They didn't admit her because Maddona couldn't follow a simple rule and that was to leave the ego at the door, outside the room. Quincy Jones wasn't about to deal with an artist full of herself and unable to refine her voice, he already had many like that on his plate. There was no space for Maddona in a project like this. It wasn´t their fault. Madonna could sing, but she needed singing lessons and she didn't do that until she did Evita, 10 years later.

Her cardio here is unmatched. Those dance movements are definitely like sprinting for 5 mins x singing the long winded phrasings compounded by the natural anxiety of performing. Totally on another level.

There’s a sadness watching this today. I was 10 years old in Philadelphia and remember this day vividly. There’s an innocence in this. A different time in our world. All these people. No threat of terrorism and the simplicity of our lives were compared to now.
Don’t romanticize the past. People make this mistake all the time. There were threats of terrorism back then. Plus, even in the 1980s it was a harsher time for minorities and women than today.

My favourite memory of Madonna to this day. Her uniqueness at this point in time was her cool choreography and style (remember all the girls dressing up like her hehe), and singing without losing her breath.

Wow!! She really does have talent!! She was moving around and dancing so much whilst still being able to sign! She’s got some impressive breath control!!
I have never been a Madonna fan, but this is incredible. What an underrated performance at Live Aid. A phenomenal and amazing talent. She said she wanted to rule the world. She definitely ruled the female artist music world in the 80s.
I was 11 years old when I saw this on television and I didn't know why but I could tell this lady was in the process of saving my life. Thank you, Madonna.
What do you guys mean when you say things like...”she saved my life”? Sounds a bit cringing and weird. What are we doing, worshipping human beings now?!
I wasn't even born yet, but the 80s seemed like peak America and music. People could sing without autotune and play actual musical instruments in bands
Funny how she was always criticized by not being able to sing well. Now in 2018 not many female popstars can slay a dance song without even dancing. Here Madonna is fully moving all over that stage and singing live and close to the album version. Goes to show how unfairly treated she was, to be honest.
Singing live, hitting her notes, banging the tamborine,....look, she is not a great pure singer, but she sang her stuff well, and entertained better than any of today's artists.
Tiago Rodrigues it takes a lot of training to sing well and move. During this time she was just starting out. Singers like Beyoncé and lady Gaga had Rough time at the beginning as well
Madonna is like the eighth wonder of the world. She is an example of a fully realized human being. She incarnated with a mission and fulfilled it to the nth degree! The rest of us are lucky to have incarnated at the same time she did. Sigh.... Shine on Diva shine on! #leo
In these early years one can see how much energy and emotion she put into her songs.. She threw every bit of herself into performances, a certain bit of craziness and sassy edge which seems to have calmed and been subdued over the years.. Still think she's great though!
Love to see her like this, free, raw talent, no tech enhancements, just her music and her in her element! She’s created some great music over the years! Fabulous.
Great song & performance but I'm even more impressed with how she threw the tambourine high in the air several times & caught it without missing it or a beat!
40 years ago. Video back then was good enough to let you imagine that you are seeing the young Madonna live. Her personality was so different back then before she became so huge.
Music and stage shows was at a crossroads in this era. Almost all the other performers at Live Aid were traditional stage performers who sang, maybe strutted around the stage a bit, and focused mainly on the music (MJ, Prince and Tina being notable exceptions). Madonna combined music with dance performance in her stage presentations that most pop acts are now expected to follow. At the same time, this was only the beginning for Madonna... in later tours like Blond Ambition, she added a theatrical/narrative storytelling arc to her shows as well that shifted the expectations for tours yet again. This at the time felt so daring and innovative... amazing that she was singing live while dancing so energetically... little did we know this was only the beginning. It feels almost quaint and innocent now. ;)
People talked about her being a studio singer and couldn't sing live but she's singing and dancing!! Nowadays or the last 30 years most can't do both and some truly can't sing live!! Madonna is something truly special!!
@@pedromotta5418 Gaga is very talented, I'll give you that, but I don't think she is doing anything exciting currently. Madonna managed to reinvent and push herself artistically in a much better way. They're incomparable in that sense.

God, how she commanded the stage back then. I love that this is back when she still understood that her unmatched charisma, energy and skills were all she needed, along with a couple of male dancers/backup singers, to put on a stunning show. As time went on it seems she got ever more into gilding what needed no shine, adding legions of dancers and incredibly intricate stage design with each tour. The more complicated it all got, the less I enjoyed her performances. However, I was a fan for at least 25 years and will always remember her for providing the soundtrack to my early and mid-adulthood years. Bravo, Madonna. Thanks for outstanding music and thrills.
@@Sassyglbeauty lol. Actually I cut her some slack on the accent because she had married the British director Guy Ritchie and was spending most of her time in England. Didn't help that both of my best friends there were from Texas. :D I hung on with Madonna until around 2000. After that it was hit or miss, depending on the particular song or album. I liked several songs off MDNA that were quite good, but none of them were the ones she released as singles. At this point it just makes me sad at what she's allowed herself to become. I look at her Instagram once in a while and I'm embarrassed for her. I thought she'd figure out how to age gracefully. I was wrong.

@@ttlover7490 I'm sure the person meant "live performance" on TV...I still remember when Madonna said the word "shit" in reference to her Playboy and Penthouse magazine nude spreads. I was over my mother's house (she had cable TV with MTV) and my mother gasped when she heard that. That was the first time I ever heard someone curse on TV.
As a musician and vocalist myself her ability to maintain good diaphragm posture along with this choreography is pretty damn insane;) She made everyone feel this whether they were listening or not, and those complaining about her not hitting the high notes, it's a very wise choice as it takes strain off of your throat to help it relax and get a bigger reputake of oxygen. Stop hating it's all love;);) Stay beautiful M!!!
Even from the beginning of her career, Madonna had such a magnetic stage presence. She completely owned that stage and enthralled 100,000 people in sweltering heat. The Queen of Pop indeed.
East Berlin? That had to have been an interesting time to be living over there at the time. America put out two movies in the 80s with Berlin as the setting called Target and Gotcha! Somehow, I think it was a bit exaggerated. But, it worked as scare propaganda to me being a young kid when they first came out.
I would say the 1990s was the last great decade. Both the 90s and the 80s were phenomenal. Actually, despite some problems, most o the 20th century was pretty phenomenal. The 2000s was when it all went downhill.
OMG, she's giving it all. I love this performance. Every now and then I go back to watch old Madonna performances to remember myself why I fell in love with her talent at 14yrs old. I'm 36 now and I love her even more. She's so underrated these days. All these pop girls that are coming around, should thank her. She opened up the road to all women in pop from the 80s to this day.
This is natural talent and a big ego. Madonna believed in herself, she knew she was good. She owned the stage and commanded respect. You have to admire this young girl here's self esteem. She was gutsy and had hidden balls.
Madonna was just becoming famous then and as a 13-year-old at the time, I was in awe!! Live Aid was so amazingly huge. It's hard to convey to kids today how fantastic it was just to see such a live concert and the fact there was Wembley and Philadelphia going one at the same time - this concert was shown live on telly basically all day! Beats the Test Card!
I was only born in 2003 so no I obviously never will know how big it was. But I think a story I did hear is that all the official tapes from live aid were found at the back of the BBC archives. I think Geldoff wanted the tapes burned or destroyed so no extra money could be made from them. But for whatever reason the BBC didn't and as I said they suddenly turned up at the back of a cupboard. I think the list is incomplete though because I think MTV followed through on the promise. For instance I think there's 1 or 2 Ultravox songs missing. Hopefully you found this mildly interesting
To be fair, she was huge at this time, hence getting the gig. Granted though, she wasn't 'accepted' by the music press and was very much against the industry of male dominance. But yes, it was an amazing day and we watched it in our classroom haha!

Her voice and dancing are magnificent!! I think she puts all her energy towards this performance to prove that she can sing...after she was snubbed to be part of We Are the World. I always admire people who uses their experience of rejection and heartaches to make something beautiful for themselves, and Madonna is one of them
Recién me doy cuenta que no la tomaron en cuenta para esa canción 😮😮😮
They didn't admit her because Maddona couldn't follow a simple rule and that was to leave the ego at the door, outside the room. Quincy Jones wasn't about to deal with an artist full of herself and unable to refine her voice, he already had many like that on his plate. There was no space for Maddona in a project like this. It wasn´t their fault.
Madonna could sing, but she needed singing lessons and she didn't do that until she did Evita, 10 years later.
@@Threeleebirdy Madonna después se encargaría de sacarlos de las listas #1 con Crazy for You, una demostración increíble que no necesitaba de ellos.

Brings tears to the eyes when thinking of the time that has passed since this song was first released. Reminiscing on all those moments that we wish we could have captured for that moment longer and whilst we live in that past, the present passes until it becomes the memory we long for.....In the end, as we get older, its the precious moments that have passed that are truly priceless experiences of life...With no regrets but tearful memories....

It is sad...I miss those days. 😥☹️
Don’t romanticize the past. People make this mistake all the time. There were threats of terrorism back then. Plus, even in the 1980s it was a harsher time for minorities and women than today.

Fabulous.

It feels almost quaint and innocent now. ;)

80s Early 90s Madonna is my favorite Madonna era. Around the time she changed her accent to a British one is around the time I stopped loving her.
@@Sassyglbeauty lol. Actually I cut her some slack on the accent because she had married the British director Guy Ritchie and was spending most of her time in England. I hung on with Madonna until around 2000. After that it was hit or miss, depending on the particular song or album. I liked several songs off MDNA that were quite good, but none of them were the ones she released as singles. At this point it just makes me sad at what she's allowed herself to become.

This is Madonna really proving herself. And as we all know, Yesss!!!
Her voice is really strong. It's all her, unlike now with backing tracks etc.
