  • 1 wore out Ford 390 FE and Toploader transmission PULLED! This week I finally bite the bullet and get this junk out and on the ground.
Dad doesn't know that I start this deal and I drag him right into his teenage engine bay to do what he did many times before. Pull an FE. See me pull a BLUNDER with an engine stand and what should be next for this old Galaxie??

Fun stuff. Looks a little easier to deal with than with an automatic. I see it's got headers already; did you drive it at all with the stock exhaust manifolds? curious how much difference the headers really made on a stock engine. I have those same sanderson headers on my dads 64 with a 445 stroker, wasn't particularly happy with how they fit in a couple areas. Makes doing an alignment on the passenger side really hard with how that tube comes right in front of one of the nuts for the shim pack.

Oh I bet so! And I didn't! The car sat 15 years and when we started they were already cracked in multiple spots so I went straight to headers! We had to jack each side of the engine up to get them in but after that I've liked them! But I have not done an alignment yet. I'm planning to rebuild the front suspension so I've been holding off.

@@shift_points Yeah we had to jack the engine up one side at a time as well. Sure would be nice if they mentioned that in the instructions, wouldn't it? another slight concern is how close it comes to the brake line that comes out of the distribution block that goes across to the front passenger wheel. I was able to tweak mine a little and gained some room and it hasn't been a problem but it was a little concerning how close it was. I still have the stock exhaust manifolds on my 4 door, seems to make way more than enough power for daily usage as it is so I never bothered with headers on that one.

@MattsRageFitGarage I can't blame you for that! They aren't cheap that's for sure!

@shift_points Yeah they are nicely made but for the price I think they could have easily made them to fit a little better but that's headers for you. I think in 2013 they were $400 or so for ceramic coated.

Someone put that 4bbl intake on that engine. That engine was originally a 2bbl. I know this becouse im watching your videos in reverse. I saw the video of you taking the engine apart & i saw the pistons. It has 390 2v pistons. 390 4v pistons are flat top with 4 valve reliefs. Same as a 360 piston. Ive even taken 360s apart & the pistons in them will even say 390 4v on the side. The 360 was literly a 390 block & 390 4v pistons with 352 crankshaft & 352 rods in it.

So I went to check the build sheet this morning. This motor is for sure the thunderbird 390 4V version. I will post the sheet on the community in a little while. So now I'm more confused lol 😂

@shift_points look on the side of the pistons you took out of the engine. They should say 390 2v or 390 4v.

@jesseduke694 no markings on them that say! The build sheet calls out 4V. Check out the community post from earlier today!

@shift_points are you saying they are 4bbl pistons becouse the build sheet says?? The car might have originally came with a 4bbl engine? I'm not saying it didn't. I'm saying the pistons I saw looked like 2v pistons to me & they should say so right on the side of the piston. I've never seen a 4v piston that was dished like that. I'm not saying it's not possible, im just sayin a car that has been around that many yrs could have had a few people dig into it? The side of the piston should tell tale? If im wrong, I've learned somthing.

@@jesseduke694 yeah I'm agreeing. We know the motor in general is the one that came in the car. It was clearly apart at some point we just don't know how far. I checked the pistons and they have no markings that say anything about 4v or 2v. So all I can go by is the build sheet.
