50 Years of Experience: Top 5 Tools Every CAR Builder NEEDS
If we had to start over in our shop what 5 pieces of equipment would Dad have to start with? Is it a Mill, a welder, or something more basic? Even with 50 years of hot rod and car experience Dad had to think long and hard on that question!
This week I FORCE Dad into some more camera time where I pick his brain for you. Not only do we discuss the top 5 tools we dig into the fact that he did have to start from scratch 20 years ago. Great video, would like to know how many squarebody C10's and S10 springs that have been done on that press! One of my first shop pieces was a good air compressor...but new battery powered tools have almost made air tools obsolete though.
We really appreciate that! I'm glad you enjoyed it! It is a honestly ridiculous number 😂 hundreds easily. An air compressor was his actual first choice but I told him the same thing. Now with these battery tools we don't use it nearly as much! Crazy how that happens.
@@shift_points yes, my compressor is now reserved for painting and sandblasting so it still feels useful, lol...but rarely gets to crack bolts now. Mike did a squarebody for me in about 97, with the go to big block front springs!
To bad it was even a good type of music, country sucks!

@@HighwayGeared we appreciate that! No we haven't seen any interference so far! It's pretty new but seems to be working well!
Every safety latch of that style that I've ever seen had a spring almost like a clothespin spring.
@@fortyseven1832 I've had a couple of comments on it. We thought it was separate pieces but it must just be built into the latch when you buy a new one. We'll pick one up eventually. maybe. 😂
Personally I’d secure the ends of those springs just in case one side or both comes off and loses tension then you can’t open it without messing with it a ton. Maybe hot glue the ends.
As hard as they are to get on there is basically no chance of them coming off luckily! As far as losing tension these are made for throttle return springs so they should last basically forever lol!

Idk i love it when people do safety mods on their classic cars (ex: third brake lights on pre 1986 cars)
To be fair this isn't really a mod. It's how this latch was supposed to work but never had lol
Firstly, great job on making it work as intended. But, as someone who has not has the opportunity to see one of the amazing trucks in person, I would’ve thought that it would have a place for a compression spring between the front/top of the hood to the front side of the latch. Just curious on your thoughts and what you can actually see because I’ve never had the opportunity to see one in person.
@@aidenclark1821 we looked for a place to put one and tried it but it would always pop out of place. So we may have been missing something but no catalogs showed any pieces other than what we had.

@thestumaji656 that that is awesome! We got to go kinda "behind the scenes" at the museum and they have jars of rubber and dirt the fans have sucked up. They are labeled for each track it came from 😂

I can't get over how handy it is! Plus that head is so narrow at the top you can get it in more spots than you would think;
@ totally!! i love how slim that top is. it’s super convenient all around and the battery lasts us about 3 weeks lol
Always liked the FE engine. The worst thing is an oil leak at the gasket surface between the head and the intake. Oil gets sucked through any imperfection and into the chamber.
@@jimhancock5047 these had some good Fel pros on there. It was taken apart at one point but we don't know why or what was done!

@@thefinalkayakboss it's very nice! 😂
Those heads look good compared to what I’ve seen come into my shop. And I’ve done a lot of FE stuff including cammer’s and hi risers, but also quite a few restoration FE’s. The two piece retainers are stock factory, which I usually replace because when the spring pressure goes away over the years it floats the valve and beats the locks up and I have seen it crack or brake the inner retainer and drop a valve. These non performance engine’s only had 80 psi or less of spring pressure when new, and with the big 3/8 valve stem it didn’t take much to float the valve after the spring gets weak, as for the galling on the stems I’ve seen that a lot on older engines and I suspect it is from setting over the years and when it doesn’t get started often it doesn’t have enough oil left in the guide to lube the valve until it runs for a little bit. As far as the seals go most of the time they are broken up and in the oil pan on any engine that used the old rubber seals, so those might have been changed at one time, but I have seen them still intact on some occasions. They are a straight forward easy fix to do them but not necessarily a cheap one. Good luck with which ever way you decide to go. Hope to see you guys at the SEGA race at The South Georgia race, I don’t think we will have the car ready ( still waiting on pistons and rods) but we will probably go to see how much everyone has stepped up.
@@AKB351 thanks so much for watching and letting us know all of that. We were thinking the same thing these aren't as bad as we expected or I think everyone that watched the tear down video expected either. Those "welded" oil rings had to have been a massive part of our oil consumption. I am planning to be at South Georgia as long as everything works out! I'll let you know!
what do you mean that's it? 2:38 ? is the valve broken?
@@salazarfernando once the valve gets stuck between the two tanks it runs the fuel out of the lines only and at that point the truck would die. Lol so I started with the switch but that didn't fix it so that meant it was the valve.
@@shift_points Okay. i tried switching the switch before i had problems and it never worked. but i recently changed the battery and now the fuel gauge is past F and the truck died the next day.
@@salazarfernando probably the valve then I'd say!
@@shift_points Is there a chance if i fill up both tanks the lines can get gas?
@salazarfernando I don't think so but I don't know that for sure. You could hook a rubber hose to the fuel pump and run it into a gas can to get it moved somewhere so you can work on it!
Thanks for sharing! Keepem' coming!
Thanks for watching!! We will do our best!
Great time to rebuild those rocker shafts too while it’s apart. Very easy to do. Personally I really like those C3 and C4 heads a lot but I will say from experience it will cost about $800 to rebuild those heads. So it makes sense to go with the Edelbrock heads. They are a great choice for a street head. And if you want to part with those stock heads I may know a guy. 😂
@@frizzellracing I'll probably get a set of rockers in general is what I have in my mind at least! I'll let you know about those! 😂
Just remember that head and everything in it is 65 years old
@@timferguson8654 exactly right! That's the plan is to swap them out for some aftermarket heads. Flow better, be more reliable and take a little weight off!
@shift_points I've had experience with these Edelbrock heads and intakes Make sure you buy the Edelbrock intake gaskets they will work better than felt pros
@timferguson8654 that's good to know too! I was planning to go with the Fel Pro kit!
Sometime is cheaper to buy a set of Edelbrock aluminum heads that are complete then putting new valves new seats resurface them and all the labor
Excellent Choice! 🏁💨
