Great job on the step by step, I'm going to my grandson help me remove the head on my 390 this spring, I'm going to search a few more Y-Tube vids for mor info on setting the distrubtor marks and lining up the TDC for him Again great job Jim
One of the great things about the FE is that the heads are really small compared to other BB engines. They're some 60% of the size of the 460/396 heads and that means that more of the intake runner can be changed out by changing the intake manifold. Performer RPM or air gap is a pretty good choice. Surprised to see someone do one head on a V8. The S code intake isn't the worse intake, but you can drop some 50 lbs by going with an after market intake. You can also do a lot of good by ditching the exhaust and going with some headers.
Always run a straight edge across the tops of the valve stems. In a good valve job, they will all touch down the line. Reason is, the FE has no valve adjustment. So this is important to have the right lifter preload.
that little pistol looks great. imagine operating a socket wrench however many hundred times. then when i watched the starboard side head go on i said "ouch". when i saw the intake go on i said "ah thats the right way". heads back from the machine shop, wow those look good. and that exhaust sounds really really good.
Use compressed air to blow the head off. I used one but I'd recommend two spark plug holes. I was able to find a fitting and air coupler nipple at the hardware store that fit the spark plug thread. Works like a champ. A must use if you're popping an aluminum head.
Guys some advice. Never add hardened seats .its a biullshit. Fix . Step up to the largest valve you can go to ..step down 2 or 3 sizes. Have head ground for new valves .presto done. Add some 2 stoke oil to your gas that will cushion you vale to head impact. You will get 60.000 to 80.000 thousand. Miles like this ..this advise is from one of the best f e. builder's ... survival motor sports .out of Michigan
Yep, I have just put CJ 2.09/1.65 valves in a 390 with just the stock cam and headers, cheap ones and a swap meet single plane Edelbrock SM or Holley SD $75 and put an Edelbrock AFB , 25 bucks at a swap meet. In a zGalaxie it will make 325 350 hp. Swap Meet stuff
Thanks for the content! I have to pull the heads on my '62 Galaxie since Ford's stupid exhaust bolt design failed. I soaked them down for over 2 weeks and tried but the sheared due to all of the rust on the bolts.
Full Throttle Kinda Guy, same here! Also a galaxie 1962 only with a 352. Managed to get the bottom 4 bolts out, bult the 4 om the top all snapped. Looks like a crazy amound of work just to replace the exhaust manifold. Might try something with aan angled drill first. Anyway, good vid!
I have a 65 Galixie w/ 390. My Dad taught me the trick for not breaking the exhaust bolts. Start in the middle, wd40, heat, remove one. Clean it then re-torque, go to the next. Remove, clean, re-torque. Don't remove manifold until all have been cleaned and re-torqued.
how much was the machine work to get that head all decked cleaned , lapped repair/replace burnt valve? Cleaning, lapping and replace valve seats is doable at home but not the decking, which can make or break a leaky head/manifold
That exhaust smoke , is steam from a coolant leak in either the head or the intake manifold. Since there were no more videos after this. Trail & error or live & learn.
When rebuilding these heads you want stelite exhaust seats installed. You really should go with an aluminum intake just for weight savings if nothing else. 😊
I got a 67 for galaxie 500 with ah 390 and got the engine rebuilt but still have time to put a bigger Cam and intake any suggestions on the best Cam i can install as far as performance without having to change the anything major on the motor?
edelbrock preformer RPM intakes a good intake. but it sits a bit taller so it may hit the inside of the hood. as for the cam. i would probably convert to a roller cam due to the fear of rounding a lobe or ruining a problematic flat tappet lifter . will cost more but would be worth the reliability in my opinion
@@MSG4LIF3 comp cams is a popular brand. give them a call and they can help you choose a cam that will work with your vehicle. they will ask vehicles weight, tire size, transmission type ect. and should help guide you on what kit you need
Get the Edelbrock upper end kit. Comes with aluminum heads, intake, roller rockers, new cam carb and all the gaskets. Wake that bad ass 390 up with a couple hundred more horse power.
The wood working purists will hate this, but a sharp wood chisel at a 45 dg angle will cut that gasket perfectly. Did you really only do the one head ? when you have a head milled, should you not have done both ? Next time maybe get three friends to help you lift the manifold, that sucker looked heavy. LOL
How did you address the block surfacing? Was it sanded? Nice job, I'm in the middle of my own job for the same exhaust manifold issue. . Heads aren't a problem, but seeing you having them cleaned up makes me want to undertake it. Wasn't planning on doing anything with the block other than a good degreasing. Thanks for the video.
Well since you didn't do both heads (witch you should of )you can't resurface the intake to match the head. Now you have an intake that sits high on one head and will be prone to leaking.
I am going to have all sorts of fun I am going to have the engine on a motor stand though I am building a complete 390 FE I bought a pickup and I am got to put a new engine in it the previous owner blew the 360 FE up so I figured because I have to build a engine might as well put together a 390 for it
How much did the machine shop charge you for what they did to the heads? Im rebuilding my 390 and I've never been to a machine shop. I don't want to get ripped off.
I pad around $350 canadian i believe. Included cleaning. Disassemble, replace 1 valve, valve job on the other valves, extracting 3 snapped studs. And a machinging all surfaces
way too much heavy cast iron there. An 80 pound intake manifold? please replace intake, heads, exh manifolds with aluminum and match up those int/exh ports next time! Will help wake up that old Merc.
All that work and you only took one head off? Should have taken both off and had them both resurfaced, new valves, 3 angle valve job, new head ,intake and valve cover gaskets. Also you do not have to remove the water pump to get that little hose off because your removing the intake and it will come off with the intake. I have even replaced that hose without removing the water pump or intake. Not easy but it can be done. Now with that all said, if money was a factor in this situation then I understand why you only did one side. If not then hell you should have had those cast iron heads ported and polished with larger valves. Better yet just purchase a Edelbrock Upper end kit and gained a couple hundred horse power. Just saying. 😁
Fe parts are maad expensive. Also headers and intake wouldnt net me too much power gain for the old 390. No lie my buget h22 accord would probably outrun it
@@Wrenchlife604 The factory intake will make good power but the edelbrock intakes are way more responsive. Headers are great for these motors and I ALWAYS use exhaust studs on the upper holes. I've got a stock 69 390 in my highboy and it's a good runner and I have a spare 64 390 for it with an edelbrock and a cam and it's a monster compared to the 69. Also if you deck the heads or block on these it throws off the intake to head mating surface and can make for intake leaks.
@@Wrenchlife604 Actually you would be surprised what those modifications would do with your old 390 .It would really wake that engine up . I have done many like yours and customers were really impressed .

This is the exact reason i swapped out my intake with an aluminum one. Also did an aluminum water pump as well. Well worth the money.
The shanked down rocker shaft bolt is very important . Oil comes in from the oil gallery to the rocker shaft and then to all the rocker arms
