  • After quite a while, finally the updated version of my experience with Strattera and it´s result as an adult ADHD treatment.
    I hope noone minds the upbeat vibe I chose for the video, as after all, discovering ADHD and having the ability to treat it, can be one of the biggest gifts you ever receive. It is such a relief to start thinking like other people, after being in the dark for decades.
    Never use any kind of medication without PROPER reason and PROPER diagnosis, be it for physical problems or psychiatric ones!

    DISCLAIMER: I am no longer on medication. Any advice given is not based on my current understanding of ADHD (I am also not a medical professional...) I no longer view my ADHD as the cause of my suffering, rather it serves as a "catalyst" for understanding, that I was pushing myself the wrong way this whole time. I have re-organized my priorities, my values and how I spend my time... and now, the way my brain is - whatever we might call it - is at peace, happy and I prosper as a result. I made a new series of videos on ADHD, detailing my journey OFF medication. You can find it on my channel, if you are so inclined. Have a beautiful day everyone and I wish you all a wonderful experience of your life, full of kindness, love and beauty... -Peter

      Haha, well Brian - thank you for feedback. :-) I agree that a shorter video might get more hits, but on the other hand, long videos are good for ADHD practice - because the whole wider word is too slow for an ADHD mind. Its good to get used to it and find tools to function within it. Rather than to only live in the ADHD-friendly parts of the world. There are nowhere near enough of them :-)

    Thank you so much for the time and energy you put into this excellent video. You did it to help others and you are accomplishing that. I was diagnosed today with ADHD Inattentive type, at age 65. The idea of “hyperactivity “ was so foreign to me all my life that I never sought to learn about this condition; I thought it was about little boys who can’t control their impulses. Well, duh. I only learned about this because I did an internet search for “procrastination and clutter” and one of those “you may have ADHD” links came up. I proceeded to have multiple ‘click’ moments as I read through traits and I learned through RUclips that I could get help. I’ll start on Strattera 40mg tomorrow, and I so appreciate you sharing your experience here. I feel I understand what is coming, and am willing to

      Hello KP. I am very glad, that you found the video useful :) I am still struggling with making my mind up on Strattera, there are things that it just doesnt fix for me... and there are opinions and experiences that go contrary to mine. It is a difficult subject to generalize for sure, but the fact that you have the diagnosis now is definitely a point of great potential :) Even if Strattera doesnt end up doing everything it should, if you have options for other medications where you live, I can imagine a combination working wonders... also there is cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness training which helps a lot and tons of other little resources, that one can implement to get better control over the condition. I have developed depression due to / beside ADHD which got me out of the game for a couple of weeks unfortunately, But I am already planning the next ADHD strattera update video and some others :) I hope (and will be very happy) if you find the new ones interesting as well. Thank you for commenting and best of luck with Strattera and also the rest of the journey in managing ADHD! :)

      Hi, what you did for me in your video is remind me of things that are important:
      I’ll need to be patient ; we take up meds at different rates
      Be vigilant to not miss doses (I don’t drink alcohol, but that part was very informative); stay the course
      This may not be the best med for me; now I am prepared to wait and try others if need be
      Try to self-assess through the process

    Ive been taking Strattera 18mg for the last 2-3 weeks, what Ive noticed is it helps my motivation to get things done that I usually put off, like simple chores that feel excruciatingly boring. But it does not help with concentrating on my work or studies.
    So for example, Ive been putting off a bunch of work, like looking for a new apartment, getting a bunch of my car stuff fixed for several months, but as soon as I started taking Strattera, I dont have that mental block that prevents me from doing those boring tasks. If I have to do something, I will get it done. BUT I cant concentrate on my job, I cant concentrate on the online courses im doing. I still need concerta to concentrate.

    • @psychepeteschannel5500
      @psychepeteschannel5500  3 года назад +1

      Definitely - my experience with Strattera was one of... well, no extra concentration or motivation. With Ritalin, I could do basically whatever. Now without any medication, I can do what I really want to do - cant really focus on random crap, but hey - that is what actual focus on targets is about :-) The mindset shift changed everything... litterally my whole understanding of myself and how I fit in the world (successfully). Have you considered coaching? Have a great start to the week! :-) -Pete

    Does it help clear the ‘fog’ at all?
    I’m on my fourth day on 18mg but it’s only left me feeling rather tired for much of the time thus far.
    The methylphenidate formulations (Tranquilyn and Concerta) were excellent when I first started treatment but the benefits soon evaporated and I became emotionally numb. Elvanse/Vyvanse and dexamfetamine were useless and Adderall is seldom prescribed here in the UK. :(

      I am very surpirsed the stimulant like Vyvanse were so ineffectitve. that is scarry. And ... unfortunatelly, no, for me, the fog did not go away at all - or it is better to say, it goes away exactly the same as it did before. I have moments of great motivations, but I had those even before I even knew about the medication at all :D so it doesnt seem to be caused by it. BUT it is only true for me. It may work better for you, as for example Vyvanse also works wonders for many and it didnt work for you - so obviously we all react differently :) give strattera a try, you definitely need to take at least a month, better two or three... It is a lot... but that is what it take for it to start working properly.

      Hi Marcus. You are quite likely in the exact same headspace I was, when I learned about all of it and wanted to get my meds ASAP. :) you are also of a similar build to me, I used to be 260, now im like 220. And I am currently on 80mg, because I wanted to take the dosage down a little a see what that does. I will have an answer, that you will not like to hear probably (and maybe in your case it will be different, but I doubt it). Ready? Here it is: I would no longer put most of my faith into the pills and especially the first try in taking them. I remember exactly what I wanted from it, how I actually wanted to get a stimulant so that I can see immediate results and get down to business, but accepted Strattera as at least something. And now, after half a year, I still did not get what I wanted really. I did AT SOME POINTS, like around the time of this video, but then I got so overwhelmed and depressed a couple weeks later , that it has undone most of my progress.. I am going to see a second doctor (who is specialized on ADHD) this week and I also want to start Cognitive Behavioral Therapy next week to support it (supposedly best ADHD combo, CBT+meds that work) I am hoping I can try out a different drug, maybe together with Strattera, as it does help to some degree (some kind of less "brutal" stimulant, like Concerta, but I have no way of enforcing it if the doctor says she cant prescribe it) and combine it with the psychological aproach as well, to get to the final well-rounded result. With Strattera, I realized that while it does something to stabilize me, it islikely not "the solution". It may take time until you find the real permanent solution to ADHD issues, a time that may well exceed 3 months. I know its next to impossible and easier said than done, BUT... try to settle in for the long-haul. You can only be pleasantly surprised then. And btw. I think the 60 mg is a good starting point... The problem is, me taking 100 mg definitely did not "speed it up" (took 3 monhts for me to be fully "in it", and it is possible, that it made the depressive feelings stronger. Which when you get actually depressed, the usefullnes of being less ADHD goes out of the window, because you feel so terrible, that you cant do anything anyway. Take care about that. Try to push yourself GENTLY to be productive and do all the right ADHD-friendy, anti-depressive things and observe your progress :) I am very interested in how it works for you, let me know in another comment when you feel the result (i recommend journaling it if possible, its really hard to remember "how you felt" before : ) ) Cheers and good luck mate! And definitely dont lose hope, even if it takes a bit longer than you expect, remember that it is progress. Even when something doesnt work out, its progress. Just think of, what if you didnt find out about it. You would be confused and would make no progress towards getting it solved at all :)

      Hi Pete.
      Thanks for the info and advice. As for myself
      I have been using dexedrine or methylphenidate on and off for 5 years. I stopped about two years ago because i got so addicted and my tolerance was so high i had to take so much and would always run out before the next refill. I got very sick abusing them and had to quit. Now ive been off then for almoat 2 years and i am still really struggling so im trying strattera. I did try it once 4 years ago after i first got addicted and abused the stimulants but i just wanted the stimulants back and convinced my doctor to put me back on them.
      I have high hopes for this even if it helps only a little.
      If you do try the psychostimulants beaware that tolerance will go up and you will need more for the same effect. Dont avuse them amnd take more. Some people though tolerance takes years to build up. Like the how-to-adhd girl. Just dont take more even if you want to it will only make tolerance build faster. Id say that the stimlants can help you get into a better place over the short term like 6-18 months before tolerance gets too high. Or take regular week or month long breaks to bring your tolerance back down.
      Just some suggestions, but youll have to find your own rythm.
      Good luck man i will post back when i feel the effects and let you know how it is :)

    UPDATE: Hi! I get a lot of comments asking about updates, if I am on Strattera etc.. ( Update video on the channel from March 2021 btw. :-) ) - I am no longer on medication. After getting depressed last summer, I switched to Ritalin, which helped immediately and was useful in getting through the initial stages of my overall shift. In 2021, I no longer require any medication and the result is staggeringly positive - whats more, this is the first time it feels like there is no impending doom looming just around the corner - I feel happy and "normal". This was achieved through shifting my mindset, as I explored coaching for my practice, I "accidentaly" coached myself out of the problematic side of ADHD and now am happy with the creativity and drive it provides. :-)

      @@replaysplays5121 Hi Replyas and Joachim - Joachim is, I think, quite right - but... I dont think Strattera really changes anything about concentration. It really is more of an antidepressant than a concentration booster. And truth be told, even concentration boosters (like Methylphenidate) are really just blockers of our natural state - it allows us to concentrate the energy to things we dont want to do, which... is a weird think to desire for honestly :D I no longer seek to have the power to do things I dont want to do, because I have tested, that if I do what I want to do as much as I can, things are going better, than when I force myself into arbitrary goals I set for myself for one reason or another. When I really want something, it really just happens. I dont have to think about it or force myself into it... hence I do not need ritalin. And since I am doing what I want, I am no longer depressed and stuck in negative thought patterns, hence I dont need Strattera. Its quite great actually :) But to answer the question - no I would not expect Strattera to improve your concentration... and I would suggest sitting down and considering if you really, REALLY know what you want, since you have to force yourself so much to go through with it :-)

I did stop using it and switched to Ritalin. However, that was also not the "solution". The only solution I can trully recommend is a mindset shift. It can be supported by medication, but without the psychological work, there can be no permanent solution. That is why I leaned so heavily into coaching now... I may not be a psychologist, but there is a lot I can do to help with ADHD :-)
      I hope it gets better - if not, dont be afraid to ask for a change of medication or consider other options. Good luck! -Peter

    I seem to have depression also, so he told me he would try first with atomoxetine first then we'll go from there. He told me that with methylphenidate I had a higher chance of experiencing depression with it. He might prescribe me an antidepressant after 20 days he said if needed.

      Hi Hans, I hope you are doing well - I completely missed your comment. How is your depression now? In my experience with methylphenidate, it does quite a good job of neutralizing depressive symptoms on its own, rather than making them worse. It could be anxiety inducing however, since the stimulation can sometimes be unpredictable. However Strattera is said to have some anti-depressive qualities, however in my case, it worked exactly the other way around - or did not work at all, hard to say. I was very very depressed after 3 months of Strattera. If I could be of any help, let me know - I am currently using a very different aproach, without meds - even without Ritalin. Good luck going forward! Cheers, Pete

    It worked well for me, 180lbs and took 80mg in the morning without any CNS stimulant for about 3 months - after about a week I was able to get up in the morning no problem, get important stuff done and have energy left over for fun in the evening. Just in case someone is looking for examples of how treatment looked for someone with *moderate* ADHD. I did switch back to CNS stimulant medication in adjunction with more mild SNRI medications because it was a little underwhelming, then again I am a recovering amphetamine addict so the CNS stimulants keep me from falling back into that destructive pattern of abusing street speed. YMMV

      Well Nick, thank you for commenting. And I can tell you, that as of right now, Strattera is not working well enough to keep me from depressing myself to the ground when I actually have to do the job I do, which I do not like. It helped me focus on things, that I actually WANT to do, like my videos and creative ventures... but not on the stuff I dislike, like corporate 9-5 job. So if you dont really want to continue your business and are just doing it because you "have to", maybe Strattera is not good enough for you either. And I am also planning to quit and pour my time into something, that I can be trully good at, something that I have real passion for. We shall see. Anyways, these are not really good news :( but at least you know you are not alone in this. Best of luck. Btw. Hi Kerri. I will unfortunately have to further solidify your worries. Strattera really does not work very quickly and you can expect to have limited effect for at least 4 weeks. The other problematic thing is, that while in multiple double-blind studies, Strattera did perform similarly to methylphenidate in helping ADHD symptoms, the real world responses to the treatment (as I see them on forums and review sites) show a significantly lower response rate - I.e. it doesnt seem to be "as potent" as stimulants. But, there is still a solid chance (like at least 50%) that after this period of 4-6 weeks, it will have full effect on you and the potential benefit is great - no ADHD symptoms 24/7 , instead of the stimulant rollercoaster... May I ask why you have to / want to swtich from stimulants to atomoxetine?

    • @OKerriO
      @OKerriO 3 года назад +2

      My doctor is switching me over I’m still kind of confused on why though I think it was because I asked to up my dose slightly because it wasn’t lasting all day and it was upped from 18 to 27 ml I think but that ended up being too high for me (cause heart problems and wasn’t working at all anymore) and after 2 months of taking the too high dose we got it lowered back to the 18 but it wasn’t work as well as it did before and he said that the next dose from 18 was 27 and since neither of those where working he was changing it. along with this I was having a lot trouble sleeping and being exhausted all the time I’m not sure if that was a factor in why he changed it though.

      @@OKerriO I think it definitely was a factor. unpleasant side effects and worsened positive effect are the main reasons for a change in medication. As you describe it, I agree with your doctor, that you have to try something else and perhaps Strattera will be the perfect solution for you. But if you want to think about further alternatives, are there any other stimulants available in your country, besides methylphenidate? I have heard many people, especially adults (I guess also depens how old you are :) ), that reported limited effect of methylphenidate (like Ritalin, Concerta), but massive results with amphetamines (like Adderall, Vyvanse). Is that option open for you?

      @psychepeteschannel5500  3 года назад +2

      @@OKerriO Indeed, US has virtually all ADHD medication available, so you are quite fortunate in that regard :) Yes, I cant see any issue with bringing up the possibility of Vyvanse, since you dont have the contra-indication anymore. BUT I would advise not to skip directly to "if it doesnt work". For now, try to focus on the possibility of Strattera being the optimal solution - just because with all psychiatric medicine, there is a component of psychology that is hard to quantify and being optimistic about the new aproach is definitely a good idea :)
      But EVEN if it turns out Strattera is not right for you, you can remain optimistic as you are in a great place -knowing about the diagnosis relatively early in life, having access to information and, due to living in the US, having access to the full range of treatment options. I trully believe that soon, you will find your optimal solution and will be able to get back to living to your full potential :)

So even when we use psychiatric treatment, psychology affects it massively. I had a similar experience with week 1 of Strattera, because I was intensively "looking" for the effect. I was ready and willing to jump in and get better. And Strattera has some physical side-effects, so its quite noticable when it enters your system. Are you by any chance a deep thinker, focusing on getting better "asap" and self-aware above average? If so, I think it might have something to do with your immediate feeling of results :)

All I can say is that I have been diagnosed with inattentive ADHD and my psychiatrist here in the UK suggested a stimulant because of my depressive symptoms. I mentioned a non stimulant but she said she felt I probably needed a stimulant as strattera tends to blunt emotions for some people....that’s something I suffer from already ; a feeling of emptiness and depression. I don’t want more of that! So shall see how I get on with this! Might be worth asking for a short term 3-5 hour stimulant to see how you get on with it? I was offered that but chose the extended release. This is all new to me as only just diagnosed at 36. It has been a long wait! I appreciate your videos. It’s curious how ADHD affects us in different ways; for me my experience is a little different to yours.

    We all have biases, but prejudice can prevent one from being a good doctor. If you just think all stimulants are bad, what good are you doing your patient by prescribing someone with high side effects that doesn’t seem to be helping much? I totally get it when it’s the client’s choice. But acting as though this is the “best” one can do is not using the scientific method-it’s not looking at evidence and patterns right in front of your face, including what the patient is going through or needs.
    I also wonder why Strattera tends to start at such a high dose. I’ve heard more positive reviews from people who started at 10mg and worked their way up to 20-30 rather than STARTING at 40.
    I probably left similar comments, and I think you’re on concerta now rather than Strattera. I’ll keep some of this in mind when I start soon. This video is a good overview of how different symptoms and even side effects can feed into one another. Like if you struggle with binge eating or alcoholism (which is really common for ADHDers), NOT getting help for those symptoms can lead to other problems. On the good side, it sounds as though when the medication did help, you were able to start a kind of positive chain reaction heh.

      @psychepeteschannel5500  3 года назад +1

      Hi Noelle, exactly right. Im on Concerta/Ritalin now. :) Choice of Strattera was forced on me, but I have to take responsibility for the high dose start and early increase. It is technically still the responsibility of the doctor ofc, but I did not object to the high dose start and also agreed to go even higher ASAP... I did not care about the side effects, I just wanted to get sh*t done immediatelly. And as I later found out, Strattera does not really do that :D
      I also wanted to comment on the "chain reaction". This has happened to me before in fact, without any medication, without knowing about ADHD. When I gathered enough motivation when I was really at the bottom of self-respect, I had a similar experience as in summer after Strattera. the problem with it is, that it is not long lasting. And surely enough, the same happened with Strattera, it did not stay that way. Because the things that I needed to actually solve "in real life", were not solved well enough.
      Stimulants are clear. There are also drawbacks (I get more nervous and anxious), but its all quite clear - both positive and negative. Strattera was guesswork, requiring deep introspection to even gauge any impact on motivation. It really is more of an anti-depressant / mood stabilizer, than ADHD medicine.
      I am now trying out a new aproach to scheduling the stimulant meds (having them active even over night, it actually seems to make me fall asleep better) and hopefully I get some presentable findings with tips and experiences for the next video :)
      Good luck and all the best in the new year! -Pete

      @@psychepeteschannel5500 Cool! That was perhaps my biggest problem on stimulants--the fact that they wore off and then threw me out of whack, even when the come down wasn't that bad. Sounds like they are a good match for you! Yes, I now regret (the day after talking to my therapist) suggesting a lower dose than 40 mg. On the one hand, it do think there are issues with how many psychiatric medications are NOT eased into, and that ends up screwing up a lot of vulnerable people. So I do blame them partly, but on the other hand, I also get that you did willingly ride out Strattera to see how it would go, and that was your choice. (Not to blame you! I ended up not doing a video on my "new take" on stimulants over night, because it did not work very well at all immediately the next day :D And over time, I got to a point where I ditched even the stimulants... and am really much better. :D It took "only" an insight, a new way of doing things and especially thinking (much less thinking in fact)... ditching the constant ideation and worry about "what is my ADHD doing now" and "how broken am I" and "what if this is depression"... and from that point, the "symptoms" trickled away quite a lot :-) Hope you are doing well too! Are you on some medication now? Cheers, Pete

      @@psychepeteschannel5500 Hi Pete! Thanks for responding, though I wouldn't necessarily expect you to hehe. I'm glad things are working out for you! I was on Strattera which I liked, at a low dose, but then had to be taken off of it for health reasons. I'm finally back on it and am trying to adjust. Going off of it was horrible! Especially since I still didn't / don't have any outside structure. It really knocked me off track just when I thought I was getting back on my feet. So I'm back on again and trying to figure out a good dosage right now. But it's really hard to get on track again, especially since I was only just starting to figure things out. And I think I missed some opportunities, so those boats already sailed. :-/ I really tried different strategies, but it was an enormous struggle.
      Anyway, I think the most important thing is choice, and that we do what's right for us. Being on meds is good sometimes and for some people; others might prefer not being on meds at all, or what's best for them is medication treating an adjacent or entirely different problem.

    I’m in my sixth week (second on 40mg) and I notice my emotions are sometimes rather blunted. Is this something you experienced? If so, did it go away once your body adjusted to the medication?
    On the plus side, there’s a reduced sensitivity to noise but I’m too tired and foggy to act without so many distractions.

      HI Jake. Well, I have replied not long ago to a lady about a similar concern - basically, I had times when my emotions just felt flat, not really up or down, but those were my good days and they were rare. Most of the time I was either quite upbeat or very much down. Basically, the thought spirals were gone, but instead I had big swings in mood, that lasted sometimes for a day, sometimes for a week. And the times when I "felt nothing" were to me quite ok, because I could just focus on doing what I wanted to do. So overall - it wasnt a big issue as far as frequency... and when it happened I was ok with it anyway. The problem came when the depressive downturn stayed for 2 months since end of July - im hopefully recovering from it the last 2 weeks and with some luck, it wont come back. (on my next update, that is quite overdue :D I will definitely mention all of this in more details) cheers and good luck

    I also suffer from anxiety, you think strattera could make it worse

    • @psychepeteschannel5500

      In my experience, Strattera was more of a relieve for anxiety - as it controlls the impulsive, intrusive thoughts. But it worsens depression (or so it seemed to me)

    Took concerta for years as a kid. Taking Straterra now as an adult because I wanted to het back on meds and my insurance is making me try it before I can go on Concerta again.
    Still really worried about how its going to make me feel. ADHD meds and how they effect your emotions is something I have always noticed even as a kid.

      I was ;) I kind of still am, but not nearly to the previous degree. I was the type of alcoholic that drinks some soft alcohol - beer/wine - basically every day, but never gets significantly drunk and only drinks in the evening before going to sleep. This I managed to completely eradicate - since than I had a couple of "normal" alcoholic episodes, of just getting some vodka and drinking it throughout the day - still not getting significantly drunk though, I actually hate that feeling. This happened just a couple of times throught the year though, and not for a couple of months at this point.
      Unfortunately, as this is a video about ADHD - but my other ones are also about depression, anxiety and lack of purporse - the alcohol is not the original culprit - it is self medication - it makes it worse longterm, by making it better shortterm... it is still a problem, makes everything that much more annoying and hard to break, but it did not cause my problems.
      Thanks for your comment and concern, I am doing somewhat ok - I started to have serious problems with anxiety, something I never felt before, and its worse than all the ADHD symptoms combined, at least to me :-) I am now focusing on getting myself back to "normal" in regards of feeling anxious...
      Have a great day, all the best -Pete

    C'mon - your talking around coming to no end. Your experiences are absolutely subjective and you are not a medical doctor neither do you have any scientist background or know statistics. RUclips channels like yours are mainly for entertaining purposes. There is no helpful information to be taken from you...

    • @psychepeteschannel5500

      Thank you for your comment mentugo. There is no reason for you to watch the channel anymore then. Please do not waste your time and energy on something that does not interest you :-)
      (btw. throughout my whole experience, I found that I really understood it completely wrong. The reason the video is up is for people to see both side of the story, so that they can see where they are and if it makes sense to them :-) ) -Pete
