I'll be getting at least 1 of the new dots with clock....but, what I'd really like to see is a 5th gen full sized Echo with clock....kind of surprised it's not a feature yet.
I have a 4th gen Dot in every room. Removed the various motion detectors I was using and switched to the ultra sonic detection of the Dot. H-o-w-e-v-e-r, they often simply don't respond. Yes, even after the cooldown/self reset of "motion", So, I figured a work around for that. I put all of them each on a Sonoff S31 wifi switch. And set the schedule to off/on (restart) at 5 min intervals each starting at 3 a.m. This way, they all are "unplugged and plugged back in" every night before I get up. I like the ultra sonic motion detection. I have one in the master bath. When I get up to visit the toilet, a night light comes on for 3 minutes and turns itself off between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Its reliable since it gets its own separate reset at 10:30 p,m. One more thing. Each of my two attics have a 3rd gen Dot up there. Just in case, I do something stupid like fall through the ceiling, or something falls on me. I can use the Dot to call for help, even 911 if necessary. (I don't always have my cell phone with me, in the attics.) Cheap insurance, me thinks.
The wifi extender feature is pretty awesome! Excellent for smart bulbs / switches / etc that may have weak wifi built-in, but are probably also near echo devices. Probably not enough to get me into the Eero system, but maybe a good enough option for my parents 🤔
That is a great point Reese. It definitely helps those devices further away from the router. I am with you, great for my parents, but not enough for me.
Yeah that's actually seriously underrated bcuz nearly everything I plug in anymore is a smart device including every light bulb in my house and nearly ery outlet somehow
One thing that would be nice if they added is a wifi extender in each echo device. The technology is there. All they need to do is implement it. I for one would easily pay extra as having this feature would be amazing 👏.
The new dot does act as a wifi extender but apparently only with the Eero Mesh technology. Apparently some of the older will be able to do it as well..
I'd be happy if the signal would not keep dropping when I am listening to radio stations that force me to listen to a new set of commercials every time I access them. WCNN (980 in Atlanta) is a good station for sports but the station keeps dropping on my Comcast wifi. I'm up here in metro Philadelphia and I like to listen to Atlanta Braves talk.
It still boggles my mind that we have this technology. I bought three of the non-clock 5th generation to replace the three first generation Echo Dots - HUGE improvement.
I have found that occupancy detection on Echo Dots and person detection on Echo Shows is pretty fast on detection, but VERY slow "unoccupied" making it not very useful for room lighting
The lowest possible volume on the new Dot seems louder than the 4th gen. My daughter doesn't want it beside her bed for the purpose of listening to music while falling asleep. She finds it irritating. I tried asking Amazon support to see if this is something they might be addressed in an update and they were unhelpful. They suggested that the new Dot could not have a lower volume because the speaker is better quality...
I have the echo dot 5th gen with clock and definitely believe it's worth the upgrade. The speaker does sound more clear and full. I actually replaced a echo 4th gen in my kitchen with it because I just don't need the bass of the 4th gen echo in the kitchen and that allowed me to have two echo 4th gens for stereo sound from my bedroom TV. I fully agree with your overall assessment Craig. It's worth if you need/use the extra features. If not wait a few weeks and get the 4th gen for $25. Or better yet, wait a few months and the 5th gen will probably be on sale. Love your videos and Saturday live streams. I usually end up catching them an hour or so after you are live lol. Keep up the great work.
Thank you very much Casey. I appreciate you watching the live streams too. That is great advice about waiting and potentially getting the Dot 4 instead. I appreciate you sharing your experience for others to hear. Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
@@dry509 You can connect the speakers to each other via WIFI/Bluetooth. Then connect that stereo speaker system (the two Echo Dots) to your TV via Bluetooth. I'm wondering now though if it's possible to use both those speakers in tandem with the TV's own speakers or if TVs can only do one or the other.
Thank you for your comment. I almost missed including that in the video and remembered at the last second. You get 3 new features, but lose a long-standing feature. Thanks for watching El
The Echo Dot 5th gen is a very good speaker. It has a superb sound quality. What I don't like about it is you'd have to keep it plugged in to use it. It's not like the normal wireless speakers you can charge and use.
I bought several 3rd gen dots recently for $15 each. Since they have audio out ports they van be plugged into a bigger sound system such as a stereo for a much better sound. Much better,
I just purchased an Echo Dot 5 without display for my 86 yo father-in-law. Neither of us is tech savvy with these devices. I opted for this option is because he is visually impaired, recently widowed. I’m hoping this will allow him to listen to audio books, check out the news remind him of his appointments, listen to jokes. Awesome! My new dot will arrive today. First Alexa I’ve owned after kind a painfully trying to get a HomeKit smarthome up and running. Had no idea about the WiFi extender or movement detector. That’s crazy.
Hey! The main problem I have with Echo Dot 3 with Clock on my night stand is that even with the lowest brightness setting it is too bright at night. I'm curious if this has been solved with the Echo Dot 5 with Clock?
Thats weird, I'd been holding out for a model with a thermometer, but this is the first I've heard of it being added with the 5th gens. Have to debate between a show 5" and the dot 5th gen now. I really wish they hadn't removed the audio jack, its one of the two main reasons I've stuck with it over Google's assistants.
Yeah, it is a nice addition having that temperature sensor. I have heard quite a few people disappointed with losing the audio jack. I am sure they are cutting cost.
Craig, thanks for always providing great info. Have you heard when Amazon will be debuting the Echo 5th Generation or a new version of the Echo Studio? I'm really looking forward to those 2.
I just added an Echo Show 5 2nd Gen to my now growing collection of smart devices. Bought it to work with my Blink doorbell. One problem I'm having is I set a reminder on it. It reminded me, I dismissed the reminder but 2 weeks later the reminder is still showing on the screen. I can't get rid of it no matter what I do even using the app. I even did an update and that didn't get rid of it. From what I've read, I'm not the only one with the problem. I've never had this problem with the Dots.
The echo dot 4 has the facility to detect a person in the room. So you don't need a 5 for that. The 4 does not have a temperature sensor, but the 5 has. The temperature sensor doesn't work very well as takes a long time for the temperature inside the unit to rise or fall. I didn't know the 5 doubled up as a WiFi extender. This is useful if you have a model train room with a WiFi controlled layout. Did you know you can make an echo bark like a dog when a burglar comes around your house? How to do this is on the web. I leave you to work out how to do it and make the video! Thanks for uploading.
Question - On the fifth gen with clock can you have it NOT display the songs being played? In other words I just want the CLOCK displayed constantly regardless of what Alexa is doing. For instance if I want white noise played throughout the night I don't want that scrolling across the screen all night. I want the clock displayed.
I bought a 4th gen when it came out and returned it because the sound wasn’t any better than the 3rd gen. Honestly, I think the 3rd gen sounds better than the 4th. I’m glad that they improved the 5th, I hope it will be worth an upgrade this time. Are you happy with yours after having it a while?
It’s so hard to capture. It sounds more balanced live. I don’t think you would go, “wow the bass” but I think it is more about not noticing it lacking as much. Thanks for watching.
Yeah I almost forgot to mention the 3.5mm jack. That could be a deal breaker for some. These could be good for extending your network or the 4th gen dots when they get the update.
Thank you Tommy.🙏 I am glad you enjoyed it. It would be great to see the clock in black or the deep sea blue. Some RGB would be fun to pick the shade of lighting too. Thanks for watching.
Craig: Do you happen to know why I get a barrage of commercials when I listen to sports on WCNN (980 AM) in Atlanta ? I don't have this problem with Arizona Sports, WFAN in NYC, or WIP 94.1 here in Philly ? It's really annoying because every time the signal drops and I say: "play WCNN" to listen again, I have to listen to a new set of the exact same commercials. Craig, great video. How much longer do think Amazon will continue to support the Dot 3’s? I have 6 around my house and would hate for them to become bricks anytime soon. Thanks
I would not worry about that at all. Amazon designed theses products to be primarily cloud based. 1st generation echos are doing almost everything the current echos are doing. From an assistant standpoint you have years left on your dot 3s since it’s primarily doing request to the cloud.
It's about time Amazon made an Echo device that works as a wifi extender. My iLive Concierge is an Alexa device that's been doing that since 2017. Amazon is only like almost 6 years behind the curve.
Great video! Always helpful! Had to watch it twice to be sure that I clicked like. Really like the clocks. Have been fascinated with them since childhood. Can they be optionally disabled or create a ‘do not disturb’ time for them?
Thank you Mark🙏. That’s cool you have a fascination with clocks. The display can be turned off, but do not disturb mode does not have any affect on the display. But the adaptive brightness is meant to dim it low enough in dark rooms. In the app it says that as you adjust the intensity slider with adaptive brightness turned on, it will learn what you like. So if you need it dimmer at night, it will learn the level to go to.
Purchased two as an upgrade for sound on my TV. Never purchased an echo dot before. I have to say they are an amazing addition to watching shows via 4K Max Firestick. Not to mention the Alexa feature! Highly recommended.
@@dry509 The HDMI of the TV has to be connected to the HDMI ARC port. Then change the tv sound/audio to optical I believe. Use the Alexa App too to set up home theatre and connect the two dots.
@@ttube111 Thanks. So if connected to the arc hdmi the tv will send the sound through the echoes and I don’t need a fire stick or anything? I have a Sony X930e smart tv btw.
I have the 4th Clock Dot. It has a problem with the Alexa voice audio being interrupted/broken up as the display refreshes. Wondering if the newer model fixes this issue?
I bought a 5th Gen Dot with clock to replace a 4th Gen with clock in my bedroom. The 4th Gen has been moved to the living room. I use the bedroom Dot for music and podcasts as I’m going to sleep, so I wanted the better sound. Also, I like how it can display more, like the weather. The rap sensor may come in handy too.
@@Shundave - The issue isn't if it auto-adjusts, but the level of brightness at the lowest setting. Is it "as bright" as the Gen 4 at the lowest setting?
I still have a generation two, and I currently don't have a reason to upgrade. Anyone care to tell me what these newer generations offer, because mine seems to still be functioning perfectly fine.. I watch videos like these, and I sort of get it, it's better, but it doesn't seem groundbreaking, like I can tell a lot of effort went into it, but does it really make the experience that much better?
I watched your video on pairing fire TV's and echos. I only have 1st and 2nd gen echoes and dots and the feature isn't available. Look like I'm in the market for a new echo
Hi I’m new to Alexa ,echo dot 5,how do you change preferred speaker tried everything with no luck I’m trying to change to one of two sonos speakers which work fine
Has anyone tried to create a "custom sound" that wakes echo and runs a routine with a "fire bell" sound or similar? There are currently generic sounds like baby crying, CO2 alarm, Smoke alarm, dog barking, appliance beeping but creating and learning a new sound does not work on Dot 3. Perhaps it is an upgrade that works on Dot 5.
They both have their positives and negatives. Amazon refuses to allow you to cast to an Echo except from their own music service and Alexa loves to be a dense cabbage and play things that aren't what I asked for.
Hi Craig, for some reason my Alexa won't connect to my smart bulbs anymore just keeps saying the device is not responding, I've tried reconnecting them to the echo show but nothing, I use the Philip's Hue and the innr smart bulbs, is there anything you can think of, thanks
Does / will the gen 5 Echo dot be matter/thread enabled or do I need to break down and buy an Echo or something else. I currently have 6 gen 3 dots and 1 gen 4 dot, but just bought 7 Aqara P2 door sensors to replace my dead and dying Wyze door sensors.
I have both, the Echo Dot 5th generation with and without the LED display, the specs seem to be the same for both, but I find the the Dot with the display does not sound as good as the Dot without the display? Please respond and tell me if anyone else noticed a difference.
I've connected my Echo Dot 2 (I think) to my mini PC as a speaker. I use it just for the occasional youtube or whatever needs sounds. As I'm not using sound ALL the time (as in watching Netflix etc), each time I need sound, the Dot/Alexa announces that it "is now connected to PC XYZ", which is HIGHLY annoying! It also does this EACH time I boot up my PC. Is there a way of stopping the Dot/Alexa making this announcement please?
I just bought this and have 2 other echo dots. Music is an issue....it won't always connect and play. also when i play audible books i can't remove them from active media list...i am looking at my active media list and see amazon music on one and underneath an audible book ...how do i delete the book?
I tried researching but a bit confused, can this echo dot 5 work with multiroom music along with the echo dot 3? Needed one more for my bedroom and not sure if I should get 1 more 3rd gen to match my other 2 or try out the newest model. Not sure it will pair with eachother
great video mate....I'm checking out...No 3mm jack then No deal for my Technics hifi. Ooops....better base but not enough for me. Sticking with Gen 3 for now.
I keep coming home and my Alexa has a spinning blue light. This has happened 3 or 4 times. The only way I can get it to stop is to unplug it. Any idea what's ĝoing on?
My biggest issue with the sound from the echo devices is not the quality of the music (could be better), but the quality of the echo voice. It sounds like she's talking through a pillow, and no way to adjust the tone. You can adjust the tone of music, but not the echo voice.
I just got the echo 5 (Still not sure if im going to use it as an extender) since i bought the 2 pack of the eero router and they support ethernet backhaul so either way i can get full speed throughout the house . 🤔 Upgrading from the 3rd gen hope its worth it just need something louder ...
I would be hesitant to add the eero in as an extender. Especially if you are talking about having a backhaul. You don’t need the Echo dot slowing you down. As for sound, it is a fuller, better sound than the 3rd gen. The speaker faces you instead of down.
It is a bummer when they do those cuts to features you get used too. I am sure they ran the numbers and more people weren’t using it. So save some money.
The Alexa drop-in feature has stopped working for me and I have no idea why. We have 5 Alexas all over the house and this was a useful feature in our 3 story house. We unplugged each of them one at a time and plugged them back in and that solved the problem for one day but we are back to the same problem again. If I tell it to drop-in everywhere it tells me we are online with 4 other devices and if I then try and drop-in to one device it says I can't because there is a session already open but we can't make use of that session. Nothing I do works. I did not need another unexplained problem to solve. WRZ 2023-03-02
I still have the 1st generation Echo. I'm not a music person. It sounds as good as these to my ear.. I pretty much use it only for time and weather, simple math and Christmas music.
It sucks that when you have to get a new WIFI from the cable company, every single Alexa Dot has to be setup again to recognize the new WIFI even if you use the same WIFI name and password.

@@CraigsTechTalk Might have to try one 👍🏻
Purchased two as an upgrade for sound on my TV. Never purchased an echo dot before. I have to say they are an amazing addition to watching shows via 4K Max Firestick. Not to mention the Alexa feature! Highly recommended.
How did you connect to your tv?
Shoulda got the Studios😉
@@stevetattersall5933 no- I purchased what I wanted to purchase.
I have the echo dot 5th gen
Nice. It is a great little speaker
@@CraigsTechTalk I have blue sea echo dot
I am getting echo dot 3rd gen with clock
Why can’t we update 4th with the 5th gen features
I've just b ought a gen 5 to control my electric radiator. Perfect for what I wanted.
Very cool. Glad to hear it is working well for you.
The brightness of my Gen4 is too high, and is my only complaint. (Lowest Setting (0%)).
How does the brightness of the display on the Gen 5 compare?
@@agehring at auto it was very bright. I moved it out of my room as telling her to keep changing the display was annoying
@@agehring My Gen 4 auto adjusted brightness very well. The Gen 5 does as well.
@@Shundave - The issue isn't if it auto-adjusts, but the level of brightness at the lowest setting. Is it "as bright" as the Gen 4 at the lowest setting?
I just brought the charcoal one! It’s amazing but it doesn’t display time. Did I miss something?
Can you access a land line through the Amazon Eco Dot
or does this just work with an Apple or Android phone ??
Is it worth swapping from Google to Amazon? I'm getting frustrated by the lack of routines etc on the Google. Is the assistant as good/better?
Yes, I tried so hard to like google, and I hated every minute
They both have their positives and negatives. Amazon refuses to allow you to cast to an Echo except from their own music service and Alexa loves to be a dense cabbage and play things that aren't what I asked for.
I just bought and returned the Gen 5 Dot. Its so new that it has bugs - impossible to get set up on my wifi network.
I go for clarity…clear voices, separation of instruments? Which one?
I have both, the Echo Dot 5th generation with and without the LED display, the specs seem to be the same for both, but I find the the Dot with the display does not sound as good as the Dot without the display? Please respond and tell me if anyone else noticed a difference.
Is the echo 5 louder than the echo 3? What’s the loudest speaker they do?
It's a shame that it's not possible to incorporate the visual countdown timer in a routine.
Hi, is new Echo Dot 5th Generation wireless?
I've connected my Echo Dot 2 (I think) to my mini PC as a speaker. I use it just for the occasional youtube or whatever needs sounds. As I'm not using sound ALL the time (as in watching Netflix etc), each time I need sound, the Dot/Alexa announces that it "is now connected to PC XYZ", which is HIGHLY annoying! It also does this EACH time I boot up my PC.
Is there a way of stopping the Dot/Alexa making this announcement please?
How were you able to hook up the newer device for the sound comparison with an auxiliary jack?
I think I got confused. So the new device has an auxiliary jack but not a headphone jack?
I just bought this and have 2 other echo dots. Music is an issue....it won't always connect and play. also when i play audible books i can't remove them from active media list...i am looking at my active media list and see amazon music on one and underneath an audible book ...how do i delete the book?
Can I connect RUclips on this device
I tried researching but a bit confused, can this echo dot 5 work with multiroom music along with the echo dot 3? Needed one more for my bedroom and not sure if I should get 1 more 3rd gen to match my other 2 or try out the newest model. Not sure it will pair with eachother
I have the 5th gen but without the display...
on the clock , can you switch display off or get it really dark
great video mate....I'm checking out...No 3mm jack then No deal for my Technics hifi. Ooops....better base but not enough for me. Sticking with Gen 3 for now.
I keep coming home and my Alexa has a spinning blue light. This has happened 3 or 4 times. The only way I can get it to stop is to unplug it. Any idea what's ĝoing on?
I put my bose headphones on don't seam too much better sound, the WiFi extender sounds good, if you got a smart door bell or need to extend ur ipad
can you make a stereo set up for a Mac?
on the version with the clock, can the brightness of the time display be adjusted? Don't like a bright light while sleeping.
Yes it can. It will auto adjust and will learn from your adjustments.
My biggest issue with the sound from the echo devices is not the quality of the music (could be better), but the quality of the echo voice. It sounds like she's talking through a pillow, and no way to adjust the tone. You can adjust the tone of music, but not the echo voice.
I don't think it was doubled but I do hear a sound improvement.
Is the dot portable ?
how to set up echo dot 5 generation
Bad move removing audio socket, my hifi, yes it is old without Bluetooth, but great sound when connected to the Dot
It is a bummer when they do those cuts to features you get used too. I am sure they ran the numbers and more people weren’t using it. So save some money.
Can it display seconds?
I got my first echo dot. I got the deep sea blue color of the 5th generation
how many switches can these Alexa devices use
do you need the cord plugged in all the time for operating?
Yes you do. THAnks for watching.
i'm not really sure why they needed to put a clock on the new devices. I just ask what time is it? Gets the job done.
Because having a display is good for showing the time constantly or for tracking time or showing the temperature
The Alexa drop-in feature has stopped working for me and I have no idea why.
We have 5 Alexas all over the house and this was a useful feature in our 3 story house.
We unplugged each of them one at a time and plugged them back in
and that solved the problem for one day but we are back to the same problem again.
If I tell it to drop-in everywhere it tells me we are online with 4 other devices
and if I then try and drop-in to one device it says I can't because there is a session
already open but we can't make use of that session. Nothing I do works.
I did not need another unexplained problem to solve.

Thank you Craig, I was think about buying one!!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy your echo.
Nice coverage on the new capabilities of these new echo devices!
Thank you Dan.🙏 Glad you enjoyed it.
I still have the 1st generation Echo. I'm not a music person. It sounds as good as these to my ear.. I pretty much use it only for time and weather, simple math and Christmas music.
I JUST GOT TO AMAZON AND SEE ECHO DOT 5 I CLICK THE BLUE AND IT SAYED DEEP SEA BLUE YOUR RIGHT
Is there a way to increase the light on the clock. I noticed when it's day time is brighter but at night is hard to see.
Yes, you find it in the device settings for echo dot using Alexa app
@@arubuolaebenezer9986 Got it. Thanks.
why doesn’t the black alexa let you see the time?
can we use 2 echo dots as stereo speakers like apple’s home pod?
Yes you can.
@@CraigsTechTalk okay, thank you for the answer
Hi new here.. I’m trying to understand what it does?
Why is my echo 5 has no motion detection?
Can I make stereo pair of echo dot 5th gen with a clock and echo dot 5th gen without a clock?
Yes you can.
It sucks that when you have to get a new WIFI from the cable company,
every single Alexa Dot has to be setup again to recognize the new WIFI
even if you use the same WIFI name and password.
Will there be a premium sound version? I have the premium sound version 4.
They did not announce any full size Echo 5s this year. I am kind of surprised.
I bought a 4th gen when it came out and returned it because the sound wasn’t any better than the 3rd gen. Honestly, I think the 3rd gen sounds better than the 4th. I’m glad that they improved the 5th, I hope it will be worth an upgrade this time.
Will the Echo Dot 4 or 5, specifically the clock model tell you the temperature of the room it's placed in?
I was not having luck getting it to tell me the temperature from the 5th gen. 4th gen doesn’t have a temp sensor
@@CraigsTechTalk
Thank you for checking. I actually just got the 5th gen Echo Dot with clock, since it was bundled with a 2-pack of Philips Hue Smart Bulbs for $39.99 and after playing with it, getting it all setup and assigned to my bedroom, I'm able to get it to tell me the temperature by simply saying the trigger word and asking "what is the bedroom temperature". Anyway, thanks again.
That’s a good deal. Glad to hear it is working for you.
Motion detector doesn't work on my new dot 5.
Can the tap gesture also dismiss an alarm? Snooze usually means the alarm will go off again in 10 minutes or so. Thank you! :)
No. Default snooze is 9 minutes. You have to stop it verbally.
@@CyberMedics Thank you. :)
