I plan 5-6 meals for a week (using up leftovers the other night) and post a list of meals on the fridge. My husband and I then pick what we are in the mood for that night from the list of available meals. It gives us some structure and some flexibility. Works for us.

I am not replacing items as they break or wear out. When our microwave broke a few years ago, we learned to live without it and don't miss it at all. The same with my large slow cooker. I review what I already own that can be used in place of the item and, if there is something in the house, I simply live without it. I am now using my beautiful Le Crueset dutch ovens in place of the slow cooker. I do this with clothing items too. It simplifies my life and slows me down.

Connie, thank you for all your wonderful tips and lovely, peaceful, calming videos. When I was 18 or so, I had a very simple life, then got cluttered over the years, and am trying to simplify again, not just physically, but in terms of my schedule and how I spend my time. Watching your videos reminds me of how I felt back then, and how much I would like to simplify again.
I, too, try to spread out my cleaning during the week, to minimize back pain, and to not feel overwhelmed.
One of my favorite books is "Speed Cleaning." Incredibly time-saving, using motion-efficiency techniques.
Per that book, I have a cleaning caddy in the kitchen and bath. Each is stocked with cleanser, a sturdy spray bottle with water and a little white vinegar in it, folded cleaning cloths lined up neatly along one side of the caddy, a scrub sponge, toothbrush, and a large plastic cup (a reused 1-quart yogurt container) for rinsing the shower.
Instead of wetting things down with a wet sponge, and going back and forth to the sink, Speed Cleaning has people clean the sink first, with only a tiny bit of cleanser, to rinse it quickly, then spritz and wipe the faucet, and then never return to the sink. This is a great time-saver, by preventing trips back and forth to the sink. The rest of the kitchen, bath, or elsewhere, is just lightly spritzed or wiped, working from left to right. The less spritzing or product used, the less time it takes to wipe the area. This also saves lots of time by avoiding all trips back and forth to the sink, by just using one side of the folded cleaning cloth at a time.
My cleaning schedule is 10 min/day of:
    Mon: spritz and wipe Kitchen
    Tues: spritz and wipe Bath
Weds: dry and wet mop Kitchen and Bath
    Thurs: dust Living Room
    Fri: dust Bedroom
Sat: dry and wet mop Living Room and Bedroom
Sun: patio; empty and wipe out Car
I try to keep it to 10 min/day, so I'm focusing on the main tasks, and keep up with the cleaning daily. Each week, I can focus a little more on one area in each room, such as thoroughly wiping down the toaster. If I keep up with the daily brief cleaning, I find it keeps things tidy and clean.
    Thank you again.

Multi-tasking is horrible for anyone even if they think they are good at it and our culture is to blame. It is something that has been praised when in reality a quality job on each task should be more important. I find that people that think they can multitask actually get less done and are very easily distracted myself included. It is definitely something I have been working on weeding out of my life.

Keeping up with cleaning has been life changing. I fly the Diane in Denmark version for the Fly Lady system and my life and house has been transformed. Just carve out what you will do this week (you carve your house into zones and do one a weekl) and once it’s done, you’re done for the week. My house is always clean and ready for visitors (or with a 10 min final swipe.). I also do many of the things you list but never thought of how that is simplifying.

Connie, your list is wonderful, because it is easy to follow. May I add two more points: First find a hairstyle that suits you and which can be tended by your significant other. Saves a lot of money, some time and a few miles not driven. Second: Opt for an electric car. To drive it is less stressfull, charge it at home saves a few $$ per month, some time and a few miles driving to a gas station. Plus you will see your car dealership only once a year.

I do the same with cleaning. I do a little cleaning up every day so that it does. It become an overwhelming chore to clean the house. Also with clothes. Like you, I have simplified my outfits so that I can wear the same thing whether grocery shopping, gardening or lounging around the house. As a gardener, I have learned how to pace myself. I set up to do a certain project or amount of work, and I stop as soon as that is accomplished. On to-do lists, I have started modifying my approach. I sent up on the Notes app in my phone a 10 day block eg. Sept 1 to 10. On the top, I will list some items I want to accomplish in that 10 day period. Then I put down the apponintments et up for that week, specific items that have to be done etc. Then, I keep reviewing that top list every few days. That way, I don’t try to squeeze everything into one day or one week. Some ideas.form me. Simplifying is an ongoing process, but a very satisfying one.

while some of this is of course wonderful and good. I live a simple life and love it. The ways you have simplified though also speaks mostly to people with time and privilege. People working two jobs, single parents, apartment living, urban living, laborers, people with multiple kids at multiple schools. three walks a day? 50 minute work sessions? These are simply not realistic for real people.

When I was a single mom and my kids were little, and I worked outside the home, life was much busier. There is value in taking small moments to pause and enjoy life for a brief second. However, you can find time, even the smallest moment will bring you peace.

Respectfully, I would say busy people need this the most. Being organized and eliminating time-stealing decisions and unnecessary cleaning is key. Fewer wardrobe items: less laundry. Meal planning: less wasted money. 3 kids: definitely need a budget of both time and money. Maybe you can only implement some of these tips, but don't throw out the baby with the bathwater.

I do believe all of your ideas are a way to destress. The big difference is working outside the home, as an educator I can't just take a 10 minute break a couple of time a day.

Hi Connie, Bravo! Just watching you and listening to your words, is calming....Our society is so over the top busy and it is the norm, so very hard to see and feel that our lives are out of control with busyness. And actually, I think it is a lot of what is dysfunctional with humans and the problems we have, we don't know how to truly relax and shut off. I have my own business, so that can add to your "perceived" responsibility and commitment that you must be working all the time, but I have been able to be more conscious in taking little increments of time off throughout my season (I design gardens and have a small, landscaping team to help), or an extra day or two off, here and there, per week. That does help and it can be done throughout a packed season. I do get the whole winter off, from December through mid-April, so I am very lucky and it's essential for me to relax and unwind from a very busy season of clients, employees, and taking care of many gardens and plants. This kind of conscious living, slowing down and trying to be calm in any situation, has truly enhanced my life, and shown me what is important, AND! it's a constance practice from week to week. Thanks for giving me other ideas in helping me to live more in the present moment.

Hi Lynne, You must be my soul sister! I also owned a small landscaping company 15 years ago. You are truly blessed to work with nature. I love that you are tapping into your need for rest and making efforts to slow down. Enjoy the Fall clean-up 🍂

I would love to work from home with a less stressful job where I could take breaks. All I do is multitask & it’s very overwhelming for me. I tend to get socially burnt out quickly & have to detach myself from everyone & everything at the end of the day. I LOVE me time, just wish that I had more of it…

The easiest thing for me to simplify is my own wardrobe. Because I am not in control of the items that other people in my home own, my clothing is one area that I can downsize and feel good about. Have you ever considered doing a home tour? There’s a certain interest in seeing how other “minimalist” people live. Thanks

I've worn out my wardrobe because I would wash every time I wore something. I have now invested in some bibs so I don't slop all over my clothes when I eat. I am a messy eater. This saves on laundry and will make my clothes last longer.
