    It is like watching a video about my life. I started downsizing back in 2015 after my possessions filled a huge 3 story home to the point it was making me sick even thinking about things I had to manage on a daily basis. How much money were thrown away. At my first attempt a crew of 5 wonderful ladies (an estate management company) converted my house into a department store and we had 3000 people going through my stuff over 3 days. Everyone left with something (just in time for X-mas). Still there were many things left for me to handle. Now I still have things spread over 4 countries, in storages, at relatives, etc. It’s not nearly as much as it used to be. I have missed so many great opportunities to enjoy my life just for not having enough time and money I was busy spending on stuff. Shopping became a very damaging addiction that robbed me of many precious days and even years. My best moments were between our moves when we would be living in an empty home while waiting on a container to arrive. And then, …. It would start all over again.

  • @arlenehalpenny9472
    @arlenehalpenny9472 Год назад +23

    We downsized in 2012, but after 10 years we ended up with too many possessions again. We made a move to a very small apartment eight months ago, selling and donating every item that had outlived their usefulness in our lives. It’s such a free feeling to be unburdened of things.

    What a lovely way to explain minimalism. I also felt claustrophobic with all my stuff and begin the decluttering almost 2 years ago. The beauty of living only with things you need and love is calming in a way that is hard to describe to others. One benefit of emptying those drawers and hutches is that when they are empty, I have become ready to part with the furniture too. Our home is still a work in progress, but I feel lighter than air. So glad I found your channel.

    For reference I am single with no kids, and I have intentionally been downsizing for about 3 years ago. I realized things owned me and not the other way around.
    Just over a year ago I sold a 3-bedroom house with a basement and a full 2-car garage with 3 cars to move into a 2-bedroom apartment with a 1 car garage. Then I moved back to my home state this spring and very intentionally into a 1 bedroom with no garage to force me to downsize more. All along the way I have giving and selling items.
    I couldn't be happier, much less stress and time now. My only regret is not doing this 20 years ago.

I have a small pile of books in my office near my desk, they've been there for months and are now dusty. Everyday I look at them, probably a thousand times by now and think they need moving. Part of the problem is a lack of space where to put them, but even so what a huge waste of brain power ! They will be cleaned and moved this Saturday ! 😊

I don't think I made many mistakes, these were items I really love and bring joy to me when I get dressed, but recently I noticed how easy its to get sucked in, constantly upgrading. So I stopped that and wanted to get back into more mindful way of being. I don't have clutter, but I have a lot to learn to embrace the more intentional way of living.

    Connie, I so appreciate hearing about your journey into a more meaningful life. You are so right about thinking of the next thing to buy to fill our emotional bucket. It becomes a vicious cycle and we are never satisfied. That has been me for most of my life. I continually go through my stuff to donate. Each time I send more stuff out the door I feel so much lighter. I just hope I can find a time when I am at peace with my possessions and am totally done filling my thoughts about inconsequential items. I truly am sad about the money and time I have wasted. We are all blessed to have you showing us there is a better way to live.

    This is very calming to watch. Thank you for making this video. I have a lot of stuff that I donated and although I regret buying them, I also enjoyed them before. I noticed that my likes change depends on what age I am. Like when I was younger, I like plain shirts and thought that flowery clothes are for the olds. Now that I am older, I like wearing flowery clothes so I have to donate what I didn't like to wear anymore. Same with the knick knacks, they only have a season. I'm still decluttering and my goal is to have less stuff to have more time to the things and people that really matters to me. ❤️🙏

    Connie, I concur, the less we have the more free we become. I work hard to downsize where I can and like you, I prefer quality over quantity in anything I choose to purchase...which is not much these days. I am over 60 now and I definitely am embracing a minimalist approach within the classic style of home that I have created. I really abhor dust catchers as I call them now. I agree that your home should be a peaceful refuge. I am even checking out tiny house living.

    How do you deal with family members who don’t feel the same way, who always have to have the latest and greatest? Can you do a podcast on that? It’s very frustrating!

      Great question! My husband and I are on the same page, however our teens are stuck in the consumerism loop. I buy my kids the necessities, gifts on Christmas and birthdays. If they want additional items they both have jobs and buy those things with their own money.
