I'm 63 and made changes to simplify my life this year. I deleted most of my social media, stopped watching news and opinion shows, changed my daily schedule to go to sleep early and get up early, declutter my home and focus on my health. Honestly, paying attention to politics and what's going on in the world was too depressing and overwhelming. I'm learning to appreciate stillness, quiet time and the joy of doing nothing.
I feel the same way. I am 68 years old and I always told my best friend who would turn on the news every eay as soon as she woke up. I will s5art watching the news when they start doing human interest stories like a man working three jobs to provide for his family or a family that realizes spending time with their children is more important that the $100 pair of sneakers or taking them on some fancy vacation that will take the parents years to pay off
Here in the USA, people will judge you by what you own. Once you stop worrying about what people think, you can start living your own life, not theirs. It is very liberating. 😊
I agree. Not only in the USA, in Europe it's the same. I was reading Schopenhauer lately and he opened my eyes on how to be content with myself, without rat race, without caring how people see and judge me by things that I have. Mind over matter.
It's so good to see younger people embracing slower living. I'm a product of the 70's and 80's. All we knew was school, working and striving for that illusion of the American Dream. I'm nearing 50 and finally see the faults in our education system. Slower paced living is within our reach. It is attainable.
Me too hannah i strived all my life i became a success then it all collapsed around me due to ill health i am 50 in july and me priorities are completely different . A slow day to day life was initially forced upon me but now i chose it px
Here in Switzerland we have such high pressure in our education system. We put young kids through so much stress and if you decide to study it often becomes even worse. It really has a sad impact on society to have so much performance pressure and stress. You are so right, slow living is possible for everybody. And I'm glad that more and more people discover this path. I wish you a beautiful sunday ☺
I agree completely, Hannah! I'm nearing 50 myself, and I was defiinitely a product of the 1980's "get/do all the things" mentality for far too long. I've found that as I'm getting older, what matters the most to me is time and freedom of that time, over any perceived "success" that society would judge me on!
I am almost 74 and pushed myself in work, volunteering, caring for others, etc. And finally, just recently after setting some boundaries with some needy friends who didn't like that and no longer communicate with me, I feel free. I live in the country in the Pacific Northwest and am looking forward to reviving my garden, enjoying my dog and other hobbies. Taking deep breaths and heading out to yoga class.
I'm 60. I lost my job of 35 years in December. I ran screaming from the city and have been working on fixing up my grandparents house and four acres. Looking forward to planting a garden and fruit trees. I'm blessed by the quiet.
I’ll be planting my first vegetable garden over the next few weeks. I’m expecting failures but it’s a learning process. I’m on a property of about an acre and so the plan is to use the front part for flowers; the rear for food. Right now I’m fertilizing the soil.
Grew up in Germany, came back to Sri Lanka where I was born to live a slow paced lifestyle.Love to sit in my garden with a cup of coffee and watch the blessings all around me.
Yeah I’ve realised in the last few weeks that I’m generally in too much of a rush when i do anything: showering, packing a bag, walking, driving, making a meal - and it feels like shit. I’m gonna put in a request tomorrow at work to go down to 4 days per week instead of 5. I want to create more time in my life for myself. Life is short, you can’t get time back.
I'm very glad for you that you decided to take that step! I have done the same thing about a year ago and it was an absolute lifechanger ☺ Hoping the best for you!
My son now only works 4 days a week. He is much happier for it! He has time to cook, grow foodstuffs, and repair stuff himself AND go hiking or swimming in nature. It has healed his mental health.
I like to say I "used" the city (Los Angeles, CA, USA) as a means to an end. In other words, I was able to make good money there so when I retired I was able to get the hell out of there. I plotted my escape for decades. Now I live somewhere in the middle of a forest outside of Olympia, WA, USA within walking distance to an inland sea (Puget Sound). I celebrate the joy of what I have every, single, day.
That is a smart approach! I'm have kind of the same approach when it comes to my job. It isn't my passion, but I'm using it to build a future where I'm free ☺ Sounds absolutely beautiful the way you live now!
I’m in southern Indiana, USA. I’m 56, my husband is 78. Our life was forcibly slowed down last September when he developed an aggressive cancer. He is beginning his comeback from the ravages of chemotherapy, which stole our attention the entire winter. Having our lives stripped down to the bare minimum of simple survival, we are now rejoining life on a more meaningful level. Although he hasn’t achieved remission, and radiation therapy looms in the foreground, life is good. Life is good because we have a greater appreciation for and awareness of God’s common graces: nature, health, life itself.
From one Hoosier to another, blessings of good health to you and your husband. Moments such as yours (illness in general, too) remind us how wonderful it is to simply be here.
Totally agree. I avoid cities too. I live in the swiss countryside too. I love going for a walk or just sitting in my garden. I really enjoy caring for my garden.
There is no better thing than enjoying a quiet moment in the garden hearing nothing but birds and wind blowing through the trees ☺ Have a beautiful sunday!
I am originally from Switzerland. To live in the country in Switzerland is quite costly. Of course, I love the beautiful countryside with charming chalets and flower boxes overflowing with beautiful flowers. I am still Swiss in my old heart, baking the braided Zopf, gardening and enjoying nature. For 50 years, we have done that in different regions of the US. I admire young people who are not materialistic, such as the young man who makes these videos. My Swiss grandparents would most probably be appalled about the luxuries so many people crave today. Their simple lifestyle is still today close to my heart. Please stay the way you are and never change your ways. I wish you only the Best ❤
I am 55 and now understand the peace my father must have felt when he simply sat in a chair in silence. I will now find myself sometimes simply sitting in my comfy armchair in total silence. No phone in hands. Maybe a cup of coffee or tea, and just being still. It is priceless. I still work in a structured job; however when I am home and not working, I look for moments of stillness to just “be.” This has helped reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. I am remembering my love of creating art and cooking good meals and enjoying nature. There was a time I didn’t own a TV (in my 20’s) and I had much more enriching life experiences those years. I have been considering deleting all of my social media even though I would miss seeing what my family and friends are doing. My close family and friends communicate with me outside of social media and those are more meaningful conversations and memories.
You'll never delete your social media accounts - let's be real. People who say that are thinking about it sit there and say five years later they are thinking about it.
My husband & I got rid of TV 20 years ago. We currently don’t even own a car. We grow our own veggies & 12 dwarf fruit trees in a suburban plot. We also don’t have kids. The money & time we save goes towards traveling, hiking & doing the things we love.
I'm 61 and have only about 2 decades left on Earth. Nothing I've ever pursued has amounted to anything. To live slow and minimally is KEY to having PEACE! My only true pursuit is Inner Healing and Trauma Release Work: ridding my soul of all the accumulated trapped emotions and hellish thoughts. I can only do this by SLOWING DOWN and turning inward. My lifestyle is like yours. To heal the Inner Madness we have to let go of the Outer Madness imposed on us by this fucked up society with their "Societal Norms". . . . can I come live with you in Switzerland? (he-he)
@@alcantwell Wow! My heart goes out to you. It's not easy, not at all. It takes courage. And to see that we are in the same age group . . . hmm, maybe those are the years when God is like, "Okay, time to clean up the inside!" My biggest help for this crappy healing is Leslie Huddart's, Body Wisdom Academy. She really brings out the BIG GUNS you never even knew existed!! (ugh!)
There is a great documentary called "Happy" about a man who lives a simple life. It explores the idea that the less you are told you want (by ads, media and society), the happier you are.
Maybe not this way, but literally everyone can start consuming less, change their daily habits and very important take an hour for instance where you don't have to do anything and give our brains some rest... Money can be stressful yes indeed (I am also on welfair with my little boy, due to a GBM4 braintumor so I know that can be hard) but.. thinking of our problems doesn't help and doesn't solve them either... Everyone can slow down at least a little bit... It comes down to what we want and where we put our priorities. We often choose certain ways and things more than we realize. I wish for you that you will be able to find more peace 🌹 Problems will always be here . But we can learn to accept and let go a bit more 🌹
@@emilyraganna8799 You can have more than you realize, Emily. We may not have control over the events that happen in our lives. But we have 100% control over how we respond to them. Acceptance of the things we have no control over, and making a conscientious decision not to allow them to over-stress us, are powerful first steps to changing our lives. This is the Stoic approach to life. Stoic philosophy is simple and straightforward, but it is also life-changing if we decide to adopt it. Watch some of the many videos here on RUclips on Stoicism and you can see for yourself. Lots of love and admiration sending to you. 💚🌷
@@emilyraganna8799Understood. You can certainly still fill the little free time you have with more fulfilling things and slow down your mind so that you can better tackle this meaningful task of giving your parents a dignified life despite their illness. There is always, always room for individual improvement. Wish you the best. Take also care of yourself a bit!
@@emilyraganna8799 why do you have to take care of both of them? Hire a caregiver at least part-time to free up your time. Don't feel guilty for taking care of yourself.
I love watching a good show at the end of the day. People that don’t watch tv seem to act like they’re better than everyone. I can watch a show and turn it off and walk away to have the rest of my evening. Everything in moderation is fine
Same, but I watch a movie in my dvd player. Not paying for streaming that barely gets used, plus I don’t have internet. There are so many good movies out there that the library has!
I love these and relate to most of them :) Some other things I do: - I don't buy presents for people (even birthdays and Christmas) and of course I let people know I don't want any either. I'd rather spend time with them. - I have never and will never work full time, and have adjusted and will continue to adjust my lifestyle to suit. - I keep my phone on silent 24/7, so I don't get spooked by notifications. - I don't keep up with the news and resist peer pressure to do so. - I say no to most social events, unless it's something i really want to do. I am a lot happier.
When I was a kid I remember our family Christmas tree was loaded with presents that my mom and dad couldn't really afford. Later my brother got married and I spent Christmas with them and his kids. It was great but the kids just opened endless presents not even knowing or caring who they were from. I got older now and after several divorces in my family I spend the holidays by myself. No presents given or received, just sitting around on Christmas drinking a glass of wine and reflecting on life. Still send Christmas cards but that is it.
I’m currently in a big transition stage of realising that simplicity is what I really want. I kind of knew that it was better before, but now I’m really feeling it. I’ve stopped all of my bad coping strategies; no partying, no social media, no alcohol, and I’m working towards this simpler yet better lifestyle. I currently live in Cologne, Germany, and I’m totally done with the consumerism and people’s inability to connect with each other in the city (I’m originally from the countryside in England). I hate the sound of cars, and I’m totally overstimulated by just a trip to the shop, and it makes you miserable very quick. I will leave the city within the next 1 to 1.5 years once I have a bit more money and a better idea of where I want to be. I know exactly what I want, and this video has actually been quite validating, so thanks 🙏🏼
@Lukec8764, interestingly, I live not to far from Köln, and everyone I come there, starting at the train station into the Dom area, I already feel the stress. LG.
ignorance is bliss. At home we stopped watching tv in 2021. I recently deleted social media apps on my phone - best thing I ever done 🤞I feel less anxious and not comparing myself to anyone.
I've never done any of this to be honest. However I'm extremely self aware & Meditate & journal every day since I was young. I'm the only parent I know at my sons school who doesn't (& has never) owned a TV. I don't care what people think about me. It's mostly superficial nonsense anyway. I am AuDHD though (late diagnosis) so perhaps I was always noticing overwhelm & sensitivity more than a neurotypical person. For example, when I was in highschool I read a lot & couldn't imagine why other girls in my class would develop crushes on movie stars & celebrities. I've never cared about brands. I'm conservative with money & care about my family, the planet, my animals. Thanks for sharing my lifestyle as an alternative to the masses!
While I'm all for frugal living, I also know the pain and loneliness of isolation, even in a beautiful area. Life is with people -- i.e., community. Shared culture and valued. Especially when you're raising kids.
I enjoy my solitude and find being around others can be draining. Being alone and being lonely are too different things. I thrive and flourish in such environments because it gives me a chance to express all of the creativity flowing through me such as writing, drawing, painting, gardening etc. I could never be bored because there is so much inside me that I am eager to express. We all see life in our own unique ways.
I just found your channel. You have a very nice and calming voice. I’m retired and getting older. I find myself wanting a simple life more like when I was a young woman. I began by quitting Facebook. It seems like many people didn’t understand and thought that I didn’t like them anymore, that I had ”unfriended” them and then give me the cold shoulder. They say I really miss your posts yet they never really gave me any positive reinforcement which of course made me feel as if nobody really liked what I posted, hence, didn’t like me, hahaha! Now as I type this it sounds absurd. It took me about 3 months to feel calm about that decision but then found myself sewing, and making new recipes. I lost the desire to shop. I don’t obsess over politics. I’m working on my next steps. Watching your channel for ideas!
I always thought it was my responsibility to stay informed about the world. All the atrocities and wars and violence was what everyone should know about. I started to shift away and realized it isn’t my job to worry about it all. For years I haven’t had social media, I stopped watching the news, limited the content I see and hear. I am so much happier now. My job is to focus on me and my family. Raising good humans and keeping my body healthy. Anything else is just noise.
Completely agree. It is depressing to watch or read the news. It only makes you feel sad, angry and anxious. I live in Israel and haven't been keeping up with the news for years. The past few months have been brutal and watching everything on social media and the news just made me lose faith in humanity. As I live in the middle of a war I don't have the luxury of completely tuning off but I keep it to a bare minimum. I'm happy for you for the changes you've made. You and your family are truly the most important things in the world. I'm glad you cherish it. It is not to be taken for granted.
When we die, not even our own bodies do we get to take with us, much less money and material things. Invest in your mind, health and nature. This is true wealth.
Yes to all of these. I'm the same. Social media, TV, loud consumerism, etc is not for many of us. I'm literally allergic to cities it's like a buzzing radio frequency in my head when I visit...and I cannot wait to leave them! Nature is the best healer and being around like-minded friends is priceless. Just found you, and really enjoyed this video, thank you!
I absolutely feel the same way about cities! It's way too much for my head and I can't wait to get back home as quickly as possible. Thank you for your very kind comment. I'm glad to have you around ☺🍀
I decided almost 20 years ago that I was never going to drink alcohol anymore. I tried it a handful of times with friends and it never appealed to me. Not only was it expensive, but to me it was just an escape(ism) culture that I didn’t like… to me slow living is also acceptance of my emotions and events that have happened and constructively working through those emotions
I retired at 60 and moved from a big city back to my old family homeplace I inherited. I now live here alone. It saved my life! I was so stressed and now feel.peace and contentment..
After literally breaking my neck for the American Dream, I sold everything and just rented a room. 3 guitars, books, clothing and a computer. The less stuff you have, the less stuff you have to worry about.
i wish more young people would choose to slow down, enjoy small joys in life and reflect more on what truly makes them happy. There would be less depressed people, less pain in the world, more harmony and peace. I really believe that the current era is overwhelming for the human nervous system in all possible ways.
I am 35. And I'm absolutely happy to see there's like minded people out there. I quit social media, I changed my mindset and view of life. Simple life is the way! I'm simply tired of all that useless technology, social media, apps, 6month span clothes etc. Thank you all for being real in our real world.
WATCHING the news got way too stressful but I want to stay informed so I read news online. Reading vs watching is way less stressful, and easier to stop when I've had enough.
I home educate my children- for lots of reasons but one of them being that there’s no option to live at your own pace if you have to abide by the schedule of the school day, where you’re having to watch the clock and time everything to fit around it. Thanks for this, it’s reassuring to not be quite the only person not doing all the things everyone seems to do!
About four years ago after a traumatic time I stopped watching TV/& I never ever did any social media! I will watch RUclips & put my opinion on it but it’s extremely lighthearted. I very occasionally read the news but it’s so stressful so it’s rare. And I don’t like change, I’ve lived in same property for 26 years now & hopefully will move too a smaller property in next year or so, I don’t buy mega expensive clothes & keep my old furniture & I’m happy with this. I live a slow life, it’s lovely 🥰 enjoyed your video 💛
im 32 and didn't know about slow living. in my early and mid 20s I spent of so much time on social medias, chasing trends and stuffs but in my late 20s, it's like my body and mind wanted to communicate something important that 'this is enough'. And so I deleted all my social medias, stopped buying expensive clothes (but still high quality) and paid attention to everything around me more: from the plants, the flowers, the weather, the people or the stray cats on my rooftop that I never noticed. I started jogging, running and enjoy doing exercise outside after my work hour. My morning routine was drastically changed since i got more time to take care of myself. I felt peace and gained more confidence.
Deleting social media while already living with a partner is somehow easy compared to doing the same when one is living alone and lacks close people in their lives
True, but it might be even more "necessary" for us single folk. The only social media I use is RUclips, but even this is far too much. I may never find a partner, but I think I'll be happier if I stop watching RUclips altogether, even videos like this. Being alone is a challenge, but so is being in a relationship. We're better off mimding our own business and tuning out all the noise around us.
@@brushstroke3733 single and hopeful people should remain on social media .. single and given up people are the ones who chose up distance themselves from everything … that’s what I think.. but I respect people’s choices and nobody can understand your life and needs better than you do
@@vikendarakjian2612 I disagree. Single and hopeful people were successful long before social media ever existed. Deleting social media does not mean distancing yourself from everything. There are many who are on social media that are far removed from others. As a young person in my 20s without social media, I meet many people my age who struggle to hold a proper conversation. Speak to people that you see in public, social media is not necessary.
@@keithsimpson6386 none of what is being said here by different people can relate to the majority of people. Many visible and invisible factors play significant roles in people’s decisions and desires. I do agree that a person who is on social media could also be distanced by everyone but finding connections with likeminded people outside of social media is mega difficult if not impossible (again this is very relative and purely my personal opinion and from my own experience). Nevertheless thank you for sharing your opinion.
„And after the upgrade, you are still looking for the next best thing.“ This hits deep. Luckily, I don‘t get that feeling anymore, that need to always keep looking for the (seemingly) even more perfect thing.
Thank you so much! I wasn't aware of the "slow living" movement and community, though I have been guided to a lot of these lifestyle habits more-and-more over the past few years.
Very nice channel, just discovered you. Living in Switzerland too, but in a big city, and coming from an even bigger city (Vienna). I haven't owned a TV since 2011 and never missed one. I do have social media and I know I spend too much time scrolling through them. I still have a stressful job, but after a heavy burnout last year I was finally forced to reconsider my entire lifestyle, slow down, let go, and find a different pace. I've been a minimalist for years, but I'm still not financially independent, although that's my ultimate goal. The older I get, the more I seek stillness, ease, simplicity. I can't take the corporate massive stress any longer. It's not making a living, it rather feels like making a dying. Keep going, I think you are on a good path!
A huge one for me is to ride my bike or walk if possible. Even if you have to drive somewhere, drive somewhere central and then walk to your two or three errands.
Watching from the Philippines and I certainly agree to everything that you've said. Its best to always go to the basics and find happiness to simple pleasures in life.
I think you are ahead for your age. I have found now at 55 that I just can’t be bothered with stressy situations. As soon as I feel myself going there I have a rethink & change mindset, dodge the cause. Some things will need dealing with later, but usually on reflection they are not as big or challenging as they seemed at the time. Same with ‘stuff’. I have had to deal with estate of sadly passed friends and all those clothes, jewelry, furnishings that we put value on are then only as valuable as what someone else is prepared to pay - which is usually very little.
This is a very valuable comment to me. Thank you so much! It is true that most things aren't as important or big as they seem to be at first. That is an important reminder to have from time to time. It isn't always the easiest thing to remind yourself of, but it very important 🙏 Also your remark about the stuff one owns is so true. Thank you for your comment! 🍀
Thanks for this insightful video. Something I don’t do anymore that has greatly improved the quality of my life is eat animal products. I feel so much more peaceful knowing that I am not contributing to animal exploitation and it’s associated violence. I also find that practicing yoga has helped my physical and mental well-being. Light and love from Canada.
That is such a great point, glad you discovered this for yourself! My wife and I live 99% plant-based for many years now because of similar reasons like yourself. At home we only cook plant-based and we absolutely love it and all the benefits it gives us and the world ☺ Yoga is such a great practice aswell, I always feel better after a good session 🙏 Lots of good energy back to Canada from the Swiss Countryside!
This is great. I quit eating beef last year, and my intention is to slowly phase out the consumption of livestock. I am taking the Buddhist precepts next year so I am getting more intentional about how my actions affect other living beings. I'm trying not to let perfect be the enemy of the good.
after some craziness that has happened the last couple years, I've been working on getting into a more healthy lifestyle. I've always been extremely grateful for all I have and for my family, for my job, clothing, food, water and a safe place to live. Now its been trying to have a better work schedule to help improve other aspects of my life. Using my "wellness" days I'm allotted to, time to breathe and relax, reading and those things that bring me happiness. I've always been behind in joining social media, trends and can't be bothered to keep up with the joneses, but slowing down is something I'm working towards. Travel also brings me incredible joy, so working to obtain those moments of happiness is important to me, but it's how I spend my time at home is just as important. thank you for this!
These are great tips! Thank you so much! A peaceful life is more worth while. It’s not about what you own of where you live. It’s about the quality of life you make for yourself 🙏 I have let go of the city life, huge friend groups, material possessions and I have become much happier with a focused life with less people and things.
I agree so much with you love the way you think and you live. Our world today is full of a lot of bad things that give us a lot of stress. we need to live more with nature and peace with ourselves 🏡❤️
Thank you so much for this video! Very much needed in this day and age we can all benefit from slowing down and simplifying more, I believe. I rarerly my watch shows either and don’t watch the news, I prefer to go for walks, read and play music with my partner. And do activities that are meaningful like you say! That helps me rest and brings me joy rather than stimulating my mind to much and getting me drained.
Thanks for this communication. I found a book called In Praise of Slowness many years ago by Carl Honoré and it is full of good insights in alignment with your "lifestyle". I have always been a person that moved and made decisions slowly and this seemed to bother many people and probably still does! What is the awful hurry all about anyway? Rushing to get where? Things like the sun and moon move as they do-no hurry required.
I really enjoyed hearing your points on life in big cities. Having grown up in a small town, I did appreciate living in big cities when I left my parents' home. Now I moved to a small town after 10 years of living in some European capitals and I very much appreciate the tranquility and easy access to nature. I'm much more sensitive to the stressors of a big city now than before when I lived in one. Totally agree with you that big cities are primarily designed for overconsumption and they're also where I'm met with more superficial values. Having said that, I would be a lot less likely to consider living in a small town if I wasn't working remotely. This has played a major role in opening up new possibilites of living to me. I am hoping that soon enough, remote work will become more of a norm rather than a benefit. Either way, I enjoy your videos very much!
You are absolutely right! I also rely greatly on my job to be mostly remote. I even changed my job recently because my former employer took that possibility away. It is so nice to go for a walk in the forest during the lunchbreak or see beautiful hills outside of the (home-)office windows🤩 Thank you for nice comment, I wish you a great week!
I love your videos and I share many of the things you do on a regular basis. Every day I value my time more and try to spend it on simple things that really make me happy and share it with the people I love. I don't like the excessive consumerism that today's society promotes, the frenetic pace of life and doing or buying things just to impress others. I enjoy walking, picnics with my family, reading, cooking, playing board games with friends and family and having a nice face-to-face conversation. Simple but authentic.
That is so beautiful. You must get a lot of joy out of such meaningful activities ☺ Simplicity is so liberating and not constantly being in a race just feels good. Glad to hear you share similar views and habits. Have a great evening and thank you for being around! 🙏
It’s a bit much for me. I mostly agree but I do enjoy going into the city and having a nice coffee or dinner once in a while. Because we don’t do it all the time, we can afford nicer places that are not as crowded. The same goes for clothes or other material items. Since my wife and I aren’t shopping every weekend, we tend get a couple of nice outfits for the holiday. Balance works best for us versus cutting everything out cheers.
Completely agree with you. On top of this, I have loved cinema and series my whole life, and won't give that up. I am more picky about what I watch than few years ago, but I feel it's too important a part of me that I just can't give it up completely. I lived in Shanghai China for many years, but I come from a little town in Italy. Now I am back home to take care of my elderly mother, but I do miss the hustle and bustle of the big city, and the interesting stuff I could do there (theaters, art galleries and such). I don't miss overpiced coffee lol (always been mindful with my money) and the stress of my job ...but here life feels dull and uninteresting sometimes. To each their own I guess🤷
Congratulations! This is a great video. You have discovered the similar path that I have already undertaken for the last 3 to 4 years. All the points you went over I have been practising for some time now and life is just awesomely great. I now live in a modest home with my missus, near the sea and out of the inner suburbs and away from crowds of people. I retired from work 3 years ago and never looked back. We take daily walks along the beach and canals. I barely watch any TV, at all. I've never had nor do I have a social media account. We don't spend our money on crap and I'm happy to go second hand shopping even though we can easily afford new things including having the skills and tools to fix things that need maintenance to increase their useful life. We don't do without and recycling starts at home. I will never ever go back to how things used to be.
How beautiful, thank you for sharing! I live in Switzerland, too, and am currently at the point of embracing my own life-tempo and my own way of living. Many years, I thought I needed Social Media for my business, but it is just wearing me out. I have not been on SM for many months now and it feels wonderful.
I moved 7 years ago and previously only listened to music while I studied for my 2 finance graduate degrees. I left that old TV and now listen to music on Apple music or RUclips, primarily at work in the afternoon and only occasionally. Once in a while I enjoy a RUclips travel or hiking video. I enjoy playing my flutes and stage piano and sketching landscapes after work. Minimalism and a life of simplicity brings much peace and joy. Life is beautiful! Thank you for the video.
Enjoyed your video, at start of simple living journey got rid of car and cable TV and don't miss them got into crafts, reading, walking in nature and recently taken up tai chi, mentally feel soo much better
i came across philosophy and other wonderful things after a breakup last year in an attempt to lessen the pain, and i feel like i've matured more in the short time since then than i have in the majority of my 20s. im happy to hear youre following your heart, listening to and finding out who you are, doing what you can and living in the moment. i wish you love, happiness, and good health.
"The Swiss Simpleton." Haha! I LOVE IT!!! I totally agree with you-and I've undergone a complete transformation from my mindset in my twenties (I am now in my 50's). Coming of age in an urban environment, I was deeply influenced by the pervasive message to accumulate more responsibilities and more possessions, often equating them with success and fulfillment. It's a recipe for mental illness, particularly if you are challenged with certain limitations, such as ADHD and a poor short term memory or perhaps even autism. It's been a liberating journey, breaking free from the pressures of consumerism and embracing a lifestyle that aligns with my values and supports my mental health. You are lucky to be with someone who accepts this minimalist lifestyle. Most people have a deeply ingrained belief that productivity and work define their worth and taking time off may be perceived as a sign of laziness or a lack of dedication to their work or career goals. Your wife doesn't make you feel guilty or ashamed prioritizing rest over work.
I completely agree that these beliefs about being productive are very limiting and I think that most uf us struggle with them to a certain degree. It's even more liberating once you realize that these beliefs don't serve you and can let go from them. Thank you for your thoughts! 🙏
I certainly need this slow living, been tired of everyday routine, but I have no choice because my two sons are still studying....hello from the Philippines :)
Sending greetings and good energy to the Philippines ☺ I truly hope you will find what you are looking for and can slow down maybe even if its just from time to time 🍀
Watching from Ireland. I hope my spouse and kids understand my way, It is exactly like yours. I decided work more softly taking care of old person. I m male and 48 years old. Even so I will care and have a soft life. I could not work at warehouse even being well paid anymore.
I got rid of my TV a year ago. It was the best thing I ever did. I do not use social medial at all. I text friends I choose to stay in touch with and make plans with. I watch an occasional classic movie on utube. I also choose carefully the channels I watch on utube. I journal, I read, I walk in the woods, see friends, do chores. I am so much happier and connected with those that matter.
Really good points. Being out of work right now has given me time to reflect on things you've talked about. Doing alot of internal work (my home as well) made possible by the slow cold winter. Spring is coming and that means new growth and perspective. Thank you for another great video. Enjoy your day! 😊
Spring always feels like the perfect time to get going and make things happen after a restful and quiet winter ☺ Thank you very much, I wish you an amazing week! 🙏

It's not that my life is perfect already, but having come to live in my hometown 5 years ago, your video made me realized of how grateful for the type of life I am currently living I'm 😊
I stopped going to coffee shops over twelve years ago and donate that money instead, I don't own a television set (never have), I prefer to cook at home with natural ingredients, I make my own cleaning products, I became a minimalist several years ago and have gratitude for what I already own so I don't feel the need to get things that I don't need. I don't take things just because they are free. Too many people are trying to fit in so they never pursue a simpler way of living. My own sister gets annoyed with me because I just am not interested in social media, fast fashion, going out and living as other people in the city live. It's nothing against her but I just let that way of life go.
Those are some amazing things you do ☺ Even making your own cleaning products! That sounds really cool and like something that I might dive into in the future 🙏 Love that you live your life just the way you feel like it and are making concious decisions to be happier. Greetings from the Swiss countryside and have a great start to your week!
Good tips! It's funny that people have to start controlling themselves with such a heavy hand. I have social media accounts, but I don't use them much. I decide myself when I look at the phone, we also have a TV, but we rarely watch it. Point is, you don't have to actually get rid of everything, just control your impulses.
I live in Silicon Valley where I am around social media, consumerism and the hustle and bustle city lifestyles. I recently started a huge declutter of my life. So much unnecessary stuff that brought me minimal to no happiness. Your video is refreshing. Thank you for making it.
simple living is a goal for me, sad truth is in America its a bit difficult. i am in my early 50's and grew up on a farm. instead of a blue collar job i went to college for a medical degree. i have worked in medicine 33 years now. the push here in the states is get a good job, prepare for retirement. the more you have...the more successful you must be??? right?? i have tried to balance work and a simple life. i live on 32 acres, i have lots of hobbies, fish, hunt, hiking, cycling, photography, gardening, beekeeping and play old time banjo. i also am very active in my church. i have for the most part disconnected from social media (not youtube). i do watch tv but try to limit it, especially the NEWS! after saying all this, i think many people in America would like to be self sufficient on their own land, but the problem is healthcare. a lot of people do not retire early, stay self employed, live more simpler as they have to keep full time jobs to keep insurance. one major health problem without insurance would bankrupt most people. like everything in life, its a healthy balance. we can be our own worst enemies getting involved in too many things which then consume us and our precious time! great video by the way!!
Fully agree with the city I love the city but love leaving more County living is slow and steady and makes you appreciate and come to terms with yourself. Great video bro.
Its so true what you say about Social Media. I loved the intenet as a research tool . Also i loved the messenger services like msn for maintaining friendships. Social Media is just cluttering. I open a threat on Twitter and i find three hours have been wasted, At one time you could go out alone to a bar , coffee place and maybe get into a conversation with someone else who is alone. Now everyone is alone with their noses in their phones. I got a new computer this year with microsoft edge as default page ,As soon as i switch on its clutter, headlines changing constantly with short tik tok clips playing, It is mental clutter.. Its great you have found your own path. Im over 50 but i think many young men feeling lost will find affinity with your video. At one time you had poeple turning life into a race. Now there are multiple races that you can find yourself flitting between.
Thank you ❤ I’m really trying to love a simple life, day by day with just the necessary. I don’t watch tv as I feel so overwhelmed by the images and noises, social media yes… sometimes it’s difficult to turn it off as loneliness comes along but one step at the time I say to me. You kept me company during my dinner, in my alone time, sometimes my eating disorder that I thought I didn’t have anymore… keeps knocking and being with someone who shows calm and simplicity like you do helps. By the way I love Switzerland, you have wonderful landscapes ❤
I also don't have a TV and have unlearned the senseless shopping. Now, I only buy tools so when things need repair, I do them myself...Props to you for embracing slow living in so many lovely ways.
Thanks for your thoughts! Very appropriate in these times. I stopped seeing friends who do not honor themselves and do not honor their friendship and relationship with me.
Like you I do not own a television, do not watch any series or movies, do not have Netflix or any other streaming subscription. I never go out to the club, never party, never drink alcohol, try to own as llittle as possible, keep my home as minimalistic as possible. Try to live beneath my means to reduce debt (I only have tuition debt). What I've discovered is that time spent with the ones you love is the most important thing to me apart from doing what I love professionally. I just want to prioritize the most important people in my life and be there for them and for myself besides my career. Thank you.
I never liked tv. Yes, I do have a tv, but for some reason, ever since I was young, I haven’t gotten used to watching so much tv. I would watch a series here & there, and I prefer a limited series because I don’t want to spend that much time watching tv. or a movie every once in a while, but that’s it. I haven’t even watched the news since the pandemic. I didn’t even know there were wars going on in Ukraine or Israel.. until some of my friends were talking about it. Lol.. I have instagram but rarely post. And I only have fb messenger for family & close friends. I still live in the city due to work, but I’m looking forward to further slowing down. But the biggest thing that slowed me down, is removing toxic people in my life. I’m no longer in a relationship because I realized that commitments takes away precious time for myself. I broke up with my gf because she is no longer serving the purpose of what it means to be in a relationship.. I don’t even want to be in a relationship anymore. But I’m only 38, and who knows if I might find love again.. But for now, I’m content being with myself. I also removed toxic friends & family members who were no longer beneficial in my life..
I love the attention and care you were giving to your home when dusting the vases and chandelier. That is so fulfilling, tending to those little things that are often overlooked. Slow living is so peaceful and rewarding 🤗🙏❤️
You are correct, the urban environment is draining, it leaves you feeling messed up, I much prefer more natural surroundings, feels untarnished, clean and healing, being around positive ppl who truly care about you and avoiding toxic company is important too, I'm 50 and live in Trinidad and Tobago, a twin island state in the caribbean, I enjoyed this video. ❤😊
This is very encouraging, thank you. I recently gave up Instagram because I was buying things I didn't need due to the exposure. To clarify, it wasn't the endless adds, I was following lots of crochet designers and slowly got sucked into wanting what they had and sold to produce what I saw. It's such a relief not scrolling to fill the time and I feel like I've almost taken back some of my power in a way by not being influenced to spend my money. I will spend it when I decide to, not because I am exposed to something I don't need. I've gained control over my use of Facebook as I like marketplace and can find some great second hand goods there. Having less screen time is so much better for the mind I find.
Simple life for my own growth is a constant reminder to slow down life - revolves around focusing on what truly matters, reducing distractions, and cultivating a mindset of continual learning and improvement. Simplifying one's life can create space for personal development, deeper relationships, and pursuing meaningful goals without unnecessary complexity holding you back. Thanks for sharing your perspective. Lots of love - Nellie from San Diego California ❤❤
Thank you for sharing. I´m living in Buenos Aires and (like many cities) finding calm living in a city is very difficult. It's a challenging, but we must return to our own essence, anyway.
I'm trying to slow down as much as I can. I am a 41 year old working mother of a four year old with special needs. There are a lot of ways this could make me crazy, but I am learning to make little choices here and there that calms the sense of chaos. What I really like about your video is that you questioned everything that is considered typical and decided what you wanted to do rather than allowing society to dictate what you do. And maybe I'll make different choices than you but the important thing is just interrogating those assumptions and intentionally deciding what you want out of your life. For example I've decided I want fewer things of higher quality that last. So I'll spend a little more for the quality brand but I really want to take care of and appreciate my things so that they last. This means having a well organized, clean home where everything has a place. I find this process meditative. I've been off social media for a few years and it's marvelous. It took a while for me to stop the impulse to share every single thought. Now my thoughts are my own again.
For me, its about balance, and time management, and consistency :) I find my days to be more enjoyable and not feel like I'm wasting anything when I focus on those 3 things. 👍🏽
You my young friend are completely on point I live and agree with every single point you made. This way of life is meaningful and gives me inner peace. More power to you.
I appreciate this message as it is much needed in my life. Thank you for taking the time to make this. You might not see the effect on the world that spreading these ideas has, but you know that individuals appreciate hearing these things and might decide to make the positives changes they're seeking.
You are very chill and relaxing, I realise my life albeit busy from my job is quite similar, I don't watch TV, i don't use social media interact online (although I work in IT) The only last thing i need to do is learn to switch off from society, and the biggest thing that most people suffer is to stop worrying about what other people will think or what they are doing with their lives, maximize your experience, every second is a second you'll never have again in life. take it easy.
I am 34, me and my husband have stopped buying expensive branded clothes etc. We try to buy quality products that can last long, but don’t run behind brands anymore. We both earn well and lately we have realised that we have wasted a lot of money on clothes, accessories etc in the name of so called brand consciousness. Trying to follow a minimal lifestyle and it definitely lowers our stress levels. If you are happy and feel content with whatever you, it’s the best feeling ever.
☺☺🙏
I feel the same way. I am 68 years old and I always told my best friend who would turn on the news every eay as soon as she woke up. I will s5art watching the news when they start doing human interest stories like a man working three jobs to provide for his family or a family that realizes spending time with their children is more important that the $100 pair of sneakers or taking them on some fancy vacation that will take the parents years to pay off
Great approach
Do less better
so you're selfishly living in or own world, with your tiny head buried in the sand about politics and the world around you. you fool
Here in the USA, people will judge you by what you own. Once you stop worrying about what people think, you can start living your own life, not theirs. It is very liberating. 😊
Couldn't agree more! 🤩
I agree. Not only in the USA, in Europe it's the same. I was reading Schopenhauer lately and he opened my eyes on how to be content with myself, without rat race, without caring how people see and judge me by things that I have. Mind over matter.
Agree 💯
Amen to that!
Yep - worrying about what other people think is a waste of time......especially if they truly judge you by your possessions.
TV is a waste of time and what is more foolish is paying to watch programs. In the 1960's there was talk of pay TV but people didn't go for it
I'm 60. I lost my job of 35 years in December. I ran screaming from the city and have been working on fixing up my grandparents house and four acres. Looking forward to planting a garden and fruit trees. I'm blessed by the quiet.
Enjoy your free time 😊

Wow you have turned that right around how blessed are you. You go baby
I’ll be planting my first vegetable garden over the next few weeks. I’m expecting failures but it’s a learning process. I’m on a property of about an acre and so the plan is to use the front part for flowers; the rear for food. Right now I’m fertilizing the soil.

I’m currently in Los Angeles and can’t wait to get out of here…
Wow, be blessed ❤❤❤

I’m in southern Indiana, USA. I’m 56, my husband is 78. Our life was forcibly slowed down last September when he developed an aggressive cancer. He is beginning his comeback from the ravages of chemotherapy, which stole our attention the entire winter. Having our lives stripped down to the bare minimum of simple survival, we are now rejoining life on a more meaningful level. Although he hasn’t achieved remission, and radiation therapy looms in the foreground, life is good. Life is good because we have a greater appreciation for and awareness of God’s common graces: nature, health, life itself.
Wishing you and your husband well 💚
I wish you and your husband nothing but the best! 💚🍀

Totally agree. I avoid cities too. I live in the swiss countryside too. I love going for a walk or just sitting in my garden. I really enjoy caring for my garden.
Swiss countryside is a natural healing worl
There is no better thing than enjoying a quiet moment in the garden hearing nothing but birds and wind blowing through the trees ☺ Have a beautiful sunday!
I wish I lived in the Swiss countryside!
That sounds amazing! Very happy that you two get to live a fulfilling lifestyle like that ☺
Good choice
Me too have not owned nor watched television 📺 for over 25 years 😊
Youre still using a smart phone and the internet, same thing really.

To heal the Inner Madness we have to let go of the Outer Madness
imposed on us by this fucked up society with their "Societal Norms".
. . . can I come live with you in Switzerland? (he-he)
I'm 62 and I'm on the same mission, inner healing and overcoming childhood trauma. We are never too old to be happy.
@@alcantwell Wow! My heart goes out to you. It's not easy, not at all. It takes courage.
And to see that we are in the same age group . . . hmm, maybe those are the years when God is like, "Okay, time to clean up the inside!"
My biggest help for this crappy healing is Leslie Huddart's, Body Wisdom Academy. She really brings out the BIG GUNS you never even knew existed!! (ugh!)
When turning inward fails to bring happiness, turn upward - I can verify it actually works. I hope you find peace, fulfillment, and joy.
There is a great documentary called "Happy" about a man who lives a simple life. It explores the idea that the less you are told you want (by ads, media and society), the happier you are.
Becoming debt free is a huge component of this idea of living. Can’t slow down if you’re swimming in debt.
I wish for you that you will be able to find more peace 🌹
Problems will always be here . But we can learn to accept and let go a bit more 🌹
Fuck debt
Very true
I'd argue this is the most important aspect to slow living. It's impossible to live slowly and freely if you know you're in massive debt.

I like this new mindset that this generation has. It’s very grounded and makes me hopeful for the future.
I love watching a good show at the end of the day. People that don’t watch tv seem to act like they’re better than everyone. I can watch a show and turn it off and walk away to have the rest of my evening. Everything in moderation is fine
Agree - these no watching TV evangelists are a real pain - they really think are so fantastic - wrong they are complete idiots 🤨🤨
Same, but I watch a movie in my dvd player. Not paying for streaming that barely gets used, plus I don’t have internet. There are so many good movies out there that the library has!
I love these and relate to most of them :)
Some other things I do:
- I don't buy presents for people (even birthdays and Christmas) and of course I let people know I don't want any either.
Great list! I really like your points ☺
You are my hero!
This is my ideal type of life
I’m currently in a big transition stage of realising that simplicity is what I really want.
I wish you all the best in your journey! ☺🍀
@Lukec8764, interestingly, I live not to far from Köln, and everyone I come there, starting at the train station into the Dom area, I already feel the stress. LG.

That is so awesome! Great to hear ☺🍀
Good on you!
I agree! Isolation bears a lot of problems 🙏
Isolation has been my style for years. When I get involved with community I get stripped of my peace by sheer interference

@@mishmishstudio wishing safety to you and yours ❤️
@@raneylee9617 Thank you! To you too ❤
When we die, not even our own bodies do we get to take with us, much less money and material things.
Sounds like a dream life, you are blessed. I inherited broke relatives 😂
After literally breaking my neck for the American Dream, I sold everything and just rented a room. 3 guitars, books, clothing and a computer. The less stuff you have, the less stuff you have to worry about.
Yep we've been a sold a lie for far too long. Amassing wealth or material possessions does not equate to true happiness.
i wish more young people would choose to slow down, enjoy small joys in life and reflect more on what truly makes them happy. There would be less depressed people, less pain in the world, more harmony and peace. I really believe that the current era is overwhelming for the human nervous system in all possible ways.
i couldn't agree more! 🙏
I am 35. And I'm absolutely happy to see there's like minded people out there. I quit social media, I changed my mindset and view of life. Simple life is the way! I'm simply tired of all that useless technology, social media, apps, 6month span clothes etc.
Thank you all for being real in our real world.
Can confirm the tv thing. Also not watching news make one happier.
👍🏽Ditto🙏🏽💛🙏🏽no tv since 2015.11:46
WATCHING the news got way too stressful but I want to stay informed so I read news online.
Great video. Couldn't agree more. I came to this realization at 39yo. I will never go back. Slow living is the right kind of life
About four years ago after a traumatic time I stopped watching TV/& I never ever did any social media!
☺🌿🍀
im 32 and didn't know about slow living. in my early and mid 20s I spent of so much time on social medias, chasing trends and stuffs but in my late 20s, it's like my body and mind wanted to communicate something important that 'this is enough'.
I agree!
It so freeing, right? 😊
For sure it is
Marketing knows exactly what they are doing. Sadly, people never realize it and stay in that trap.
😅@@swisssimpletona great wake up call
It isn't always the easiest thing to remind yourself of, but it very important 🙏
Also your remark about the stuff one owns is so true. Thank you for your comment! 🍀
We watch dvds but no ‘normal’ tv. Never watched any of the online things. Never watch, read or listen to mainstream “news.” Much happier this way
Beautiful man and beautiful outlook on life. His wife is lucky.
Yes!! Plant based!!! For the animals, for the earth, for our personal spiritual and physical well being!! 🌱@@swisssimpleton

It’s about the quality of life you make for yourself 🙏
I have let go of the city life, huge friend groups, material possessions and I have become much happier with a focused life with less people and things.
That is beautiful to read! ☺
I'm so glad you are on this journey. My friends laugh when I say things are going too fast, but I am very content with my simple life.
I began slow living one year ago. I take a nap every afternoon….. and try to cook once each day. Perfect world ❤
Thanks for this communication.
I feel the same!
It is so nice to go for a walk in the forest during the lunchbreak or see beautiful hills outside of the (home-)office windows🤩
Thank you for nice comment, I wish you a great week!
Balance works best for us versus cutting everything out
cheers.
That's also a great way how you approach it ☺ This was simply some food for thought 🙏
I strive to live slow, but still watched this at double speed.
hahahahahhaha
How beautiful, thank you for sharing! I live in Switzerland, too, and am currently at the point of embracing my own life-tempo and my own way of living. Many years, I thought I needed Social Media for my business, but it is just wearing me out. I have not been on SM for many months now and it feels wonderful.
☺☺🙏
Sending greetings and good energy to the Philippines ☺ I truly hope you will find what you are looking for and can slow down maybe even if its just from time to time 🍀
I have found following the "norm" is a determent. ThanX for this video. I found it just in time at a turning point in my life. Subscribed. Cheers!

It's so toxic. I'm looking to move to Portugal or Western Ireland
You're a wise guy.Forget about your sister.
No1 No TV! I had no TV since I was 25 years old and I am now 66🌸 Many think that’s strange but I am loving it. Thanks for your video!
simple living is a goal for me, sad truth is in America its a bit difficult. i am in my early 50's and grew up on a farm. instead of a blue collar job i went to college for a medical degree. i have worked in medicine 33 years now. the push here in the states is get a good job, prepare for retirement. the more you have...the more successful you must be??? right?? i have tried to balance work and a simple life. i live on 32 acres, i have lots of hobbies, fish, hunt, hiking, cycling, photography, gardening, beekeeping and play old time banjo. i also am very active in my church. i have for the most part disconnected from social media (not youtube). i do watch tv but try to limit it, especially the NEWS! after saying all this, i think many people in America would like to be self sufficient on their own land, but the problem is healthcare. a lot of people do not retire early, stay self employed, live more simpler as they have to keep full time jobs to keep insurance. one major health problem without insurance would bankrupt most people. like everything in life, its a healthy balance. we can be our own worst enemies getting involved in too many things which then consume us and our precious time! great video by the way!!
I absolutely see your points! 🙏
Fully agree with the city
I love the city but love leaving more
County living is slow and steady and makes you appreciate and come to terms with yourself.
Your sentiments resonate so deeply. If you want to have more, desire 'less'.
Never seen such a calming video like this in the last decade…
I can really agree to all of your points
Thank you man for the reminder to slow down
Thank you ❤ I’m really trying to love a simple life, day by day with just the necessary.
I absolutely understand you! Loneliness can be super challenging sometimes. I'm very glad my videos gave you some company ☺ best of wishes 🍀
I also don't have a TV and have unlearned the senseless shopping. Now, I only buy tools so when things need repair, I do them myself...Props to you for embracing slow living in so many lovely ways.
That's so powerful! Those tools will help you so much more than a new handbag ever would have 😁 Cheers up north, I wish you a beautiful week 😊

I'm really glad i found your video. I'm in a stage that I'm also going for a change in my life. A detox. And this video really made me relax and calm.
Amen and amen! Considered odd because I don't buy into the busy, brand new culture. I am good with that. 😊
Thanks for your thoughts! Very appropriate in these times. I stopped seeing friends who do not honor themselves and do not honor their friendship and relationship with me.
I hate fast fashion....it is hampering our environment as well, we all should do something about it.
Thank you.
That's a wonderful approach! ☺
Im always calmer when logging out from Facebook and after a while feeling tired if im back again.
Thank you for this video its very helpful.
You put it beautifully, Nellie! ☺☺
You are very chill and relaxing, I realise my life albeit busy from my job is quite similar, I don't watch TV, i don't use social media interact online (although I work in IT)
The only last thing i need to do is learn to switch off from society, and the biggest thing that most people suffer is to stop worrying about what other people will think or what they are doing with their lives, maximize your experience, every second is a second you'll never have again in life. take it easy.
Interesting how as you get older your priorities change.
