    Thank you for watching my videos! This channel is dedicated to animal education and improving the lives of captive animals.
    Here’s little about me!
    My name is Meghan Arriola and I live in Texas with my husband Jaime, where I dedicate my time to taking care of exotic and domesticated animals on my farm. We run a rescue and sanctuary for animals like alpacas, birds and reptiles. I do animal education presentations for groups and schools. Our alpacas also do events where we are able to teach people about these unique animals. I have used service dogs for medical needs for over 10 years and I am an advocate for assistance animals and mental health awareness.
    I am an animal educator that brings science related ideas to an audience from around the world by presenting fun and interesting topics in a family friendly way. Animals touch our lives in unique ways everyday as simply being our pets and companions, but how can we make their lives equally as special now that they live in captivity? My RUclips channel and blog explore ways to meet this goal by tackling things like animal behavior, human-animal relationships and veterinary medicine. Animal science is a great way to teach people of all ages that education is fun and nerdy is cool.
    My previous animal related work experience includes working in veterinary clinics, private zoos, training horses and volunteer work in wildlife rehabilitation, rescue/foster/adoption programs and therapeutic horsemanship for children with disabilities.
    When I am not working with animals, I am working at the health care clinic owned by my husband Jaime and I, where we provide services to low income, minority neighborhoods. We have been on the frontlines fighting covid19. I also have a passion for art and I am an award winning painter and photographer and published author. I am naturally very introverted but I am extroverted about sharing my passions and doing my part to make the world a better place!

    I believe that it this situation, the pet’s owner has to weigh out the dangers of the medication and the insects themselves depending on where they live. Ticks carry different diseases in different parts of the world. My parents’ dog got babesiosis when we forgot to give him tick prevention meds, thankfully he is fine now. But this disease could have killed him. My parents live near a forest though, so there are a lot of ticks there.
    On the other hand, I do not give my cats the anti-tick meds because they only go out on my (escape-proof!) balcony.

    Obviously, only use medications for the animals they're meant for. However, as an adoptive dog owner that used alternative flea/tick care, I need to share our very dangerous experience -- I adopted a dog who was heartworm positive after only 2 months without preventative medication. The illness was intense, treatment was painful and expensive. Then, when I was in a tick-heavy area with the dog (for only 6 months) I thought regular bathing, bug spray, and consistent inspection would be enough. It wasn't -- I missed a tick and my dog contracted lyme disease, which caused chronic illness even after months of testing and antibiotics. Since then, we have used a tick collar when we are in high risk areas, and he has not had a tick or parasite since. We use them temporarily and carefully when in high risk zones because high risk = major precautions.

    I completely agree with this video. I am getting my shih tzu puppy in a few months. I have already decided not to ever give her topical or oral medication for fleas and ticks. The best solution to this that I have come up with is using Wondercide. I know it’s not a perfect product, but I use bug spray for humans on myself when I go out, so bug spray for dogs should work just fine. Plus she will be getting bathed every 2 weeks with shampoo and coat conditioner, and I won’t have to use it in the winter when there are no bugs. The only vaccines she will ever receiver are rabies, distemper and parvo. I will not subject her to more injections than that, especially the lepto vaccine. Too many dogs have adverse reactions to it, and I will not be taking my dog to dog parks or daycare. I will also only be giving her heat worm medication during mosquito season. I looked it up, dogs CANNOT contract heart worms from other dogs, an infected mosquito must bite them for a dog to get heart worms. Therefore if you live somewhere that gets cold in the winter and the mosquitoes die, you do not have to give heart worm prevention in the winter (same with flea and tick medication). The vet just tells you to give it every month because they don’t trust you to remember when to start and stop every year.

      My goal is to make an updated video answering this question, but I did make this video which I will link. Honestly grooming and diet are the two most important things when preventing ticks. My last dog video was about supplements and one supplement I use for tick prevention is garlic. And it's funny because people get really worked up about how harmful garlic is, even though studies have proved that garlic is not harmful to dogs and tick medications have proven harmful. So that was another reason I made this video, we need to logically think about what we give our dogs.

    I'm going to the vet Monday to get my puppies booster shots and medicine for pests. I feel bad because I can't go in with her because of the virus. She is so sweet and week behaved on her own. I still can't believe I found such a sweet few month old puppy at the shelter. She really is amazing. I hate putting her in the scary car, and driving her down the street to the vet, then having then carry her inside without me and start hitting her with hypodermics. I know it's for the best, but I still feel bad because of how in the moment dogs live. She really is already my best friend, and I can't over emphasize how naturally sweet and well behaved she naturally is. I love her and I do want the best for her though.

    As some who is also an animal professional and has had a full blown flea infestation in my home before, I feel this video is unfair. Natural remedies do not work for all situations, especially if you have an infestation. While our house was going through de-fleaing treatments the only way I could protect my animals was prescribed medication. All medication comes with risks, and those risks should definitely be more openly discussed. But if I didn’t use topicals or orals on my animals in that situation, it would have become much worse for their health. Likewise, if I didn’t use topicals on my goats/sheep or fowl I would see much more illness and death in my herds/flocks. Everything I use with the animals in my care is prescribed or suggested by that animal’s vet. Putting it out there using fear tactics is creating mis-trust in vets. If a vet prescribes anti-parasitics, they are doing it for a reason.

    • @HappyTailsAnimals
      @HappyTailsAnimals  2 года назад

      You should stop trusting vets. They do not always have the best advice or the right answers. Medication is certainly the easy way in your situation. But still not necessarily if you are willing to put more effort into your pets health.

    • @katiedonnellan9737
      @katiedonnellan9737 2 года назад +8

      I really can’t believe you would publicly suggest to stop trusting vets. Yes, there are bad people in every profession, but saying blanketly to not trust vets is not in the best interest for the animals in anyone’s care. Medication with actual results is important. You can’t just feed garlic and turmeric to everything and hope for the best. Don’t get me wrong, I have a pony with laminitis that gets turmeric as a dietary supplement among other treatments, so I do value and recognize the importance of homeopathic medicine. But for the average animal owner that watches your videos, they should consult with their animal’s actual vet for any dietary supplement or medication. Pushing for distrust in vets is a harmful thing. I manage a children’s zoo and work with a team of amazing vets, their council is imperative in any health decisions I make with our animals. You should be advocating for pet owners to find good vets for the species they keep, not saying to do internet research and not protect their pets from parasites with medication proven to protect them.
      I take the health of the animals in my care very seriously, so to elude that I should “put more effort” in is quite rude.

We all do the best we can with the knowledge that we have. Have you ever watched a 12 month old puppy die at the vets after 5 days struggle to survive from paralysis tick? And I gave him the topical one to him and he got so itchy that he scratched a huge patch of fur off and it's really raw and awful. Tick medications prescribed by vets have killed many dogs and caused bad reactions for even more dogs. The data is there.
