I watched this video like 15 times and finally managed to replace the starter! I have zero auto mechanic skills so there is no way I would have succeeded without this video. Thank you very much! I will say that I had to hit the bolts every day for about two weeks with Liquid Wrench to finally be able to get them off. They were basically rusted to the point that the bolts and the starter were one piece of metal. Hell of a project but it is done! Thank you sir!
The last thing you want to do is break that connector that the OP broke. So I suggest you take off the fat wire, before you unbolt the starter. If you move up towards the front of the truck while underneath the truck, you can see the nut to get to it and take it off. Put it on after you get the starter installed too. It doesn't take much to break that connector if you leave it hanging by the wire. I changed my starter in less than an hour. If you break that connector, it will turn an easy starter change out into a nightmare. To install the heat shield, you will need a 4mm socket. Save the two 4mm screws from the old starter, since the new starter doesn't come with those. The holes are not tapped in the new starter either, but it is soft metal, so the screws will self tap. Excellent excellent camera angles and the socket size call outs saved even more pain in my neck from being under there even longer cussing the wrong size guesses. I couldn't get my inspection cover off though.... Ill start it up and see how bad the rattle is w only 6 of the 6 bolts cuz just like yours the new starter dome was 1/16th inch too fat...go figure. Thank you!!

This is the best video, I tried for three hrs to align dust cover and starter bolt holes. After watching your video an removing the dust cover it took me 45 min.

Great tip about taking the cable hold downs loose. Starter replacements in my 92 c1500 have been a pain in the ass becasue it's so hard to get eyes/hands on the connectors. I was thinking of adding a longer battery cable, or some kind of quick disconnect, but your way is much easier. Thanks! Doug

Man you saved my day!! This is exactly the same as my gmc sierra 96. Except for the battery connector, to loosen it up I used 13mm instead of 11mm. Everything else is perfect, make it easy for us beginners. Thank you!!
Thank you for the video, you just saved my roughly $1000 at the shop replacing the starter on my 1993 GMC sierra 6.5L turbo diesel. Advice for anyone doing the job on the 6.5L is that the starter has an additional bracket on the front of the solenoid that braces it to the bottom of the engine block. The front right tire will have to be removed (or not but it is tight) to access this 7/16" nut. Other than that small hold up it is exactly the same as your truck.
+Tim Culver Also, take the time to remove the cover. It takes a couple minutes but makes the removal of the starter easier. If your transmission cooling lines were as rusted as mine, removing this cover reduces the risk of causing damage.

It turns on every morning but once the truck is running and its hot if i park it somewhere it wont turn back on. I have to wait tile 15-30 mins to start then it will start. Ima replace it right now as we speak .

where does the small 8 mm wire lead to? rather, i have a question about a wire that i'm dealing with in my truck that i bought about a year ago.. the way the wiring was set up, there was a small wire (larger than the 8mm one connected to the solenoid but much smaller than the large one that connects to the positive battery post).. this wire was routed from (i think) the block on the firewall to the battery and doubled up with the large wire on the positive terminal.. it has run seemingly fine for a while, however i've gone through about 2 starters in the past year.. just the other night, i replaced the starter again and wired everything up how it had always been but somewhere, there was exposed wires and everything started frying! completely melted the positive terminal wire.. so i bought a new one as well as a new wire to replace the smaller one i mentioned that was originally routed from the firewall to the positive post.. this one wasn't melted, but it has taped up here and there where there was exposed wire, so i wanted to replace it along with the postitive terminal wire.. now, something isn't going right.. i routed it from the firewall directly to the positive post how it was before, and then the firewall end started smoking! i'm so frustrated with it by now, but i can't afford to call a mobile mechanic.. also just want to get to know the components for myself for future reference.. i just wonder if the previous owner had routed the wires that way for alternate purposes.. now the small wire that has always been connected to the 8 mm connection, i put it right back where it was.. it seems to rout upward toward where the spark plugs are (as far as i can tell, as it's bunched up with a lot of other small wires) sorry for the long explanation but i'm desperate for legitimate information, ,hense my coming to ask on youtube of all places, haha.. thanks in advance to anyone with valuable info. on this mess of a situation i have!
Sometimes a starter can get heavy to hold up while lining up the bolts especially the older ones especially the chevrolet "beast"...ive found that a 10" piece of all thread is very very helpful. Just screw it into one of the bolt holes then run yur starter up on it and put nut on it, yul find it very useful for stopping at various intervals while hooking up the wires and moving tranny lines or just to take a break and once you get one starter bolt started then remove your allthread n put yur other bolt in.....i find it a heck of alot easier than trying to hold one up while yur trying to stab a bolt especially on the larger more heavier ones...
I just go to the local parts warehouse, I'm lucky that all the locations I deal with are staffed with retired mechanics that are highly knowledgeable. but any location will set you up right.
I purchased the exact starter for my truck that you did the install with; which of the two smaller poles did you hook up the smaller gauge positive wire to on the solenoid? One is an "S" and the other is "R".

Ok I just had this problem with my 94 i just went dow. There and beat it with a hammer. Liek it was froze cuz it's only 15 degrees out and the slush froze it? Not sure if I should change it
My truck is a year younger this is awkward but i was told that maybe my main power li e was bad since the truck starts but if i turn on thw headlights it makes the truck shut off completely. I thought it was the alt replaced and its still happening. I was told it was the battery. It had to do with it but it wasnt that either, its still happening. Lastly i had other things checked and well its still happening til i went to my local pep boys and they said that it might be my main power line the one that runs from the battery to the starter because its barely hanging onto the batttery and also because its old and might have too much power drawn from it when i turn on the headlights that it takes power away from the engine ... is this possible ? If it is how do i go about chosing the correct wire to slresolve this issue ? How do i get into the tight places the wire runs through ? Please help if you can.
Hey i got almost the exact truck and it wasnt starting, i knew it wasnt the battery or alternator. They checked my starter in autozone and they say its working fine. What could be the reasons of not starting then?
ok, on the starter you got the big one that's going to the +post on battery. The 2nd one goes to your alternator correct? Mines a 93 but it looks identical to yours.
My 1995 has a little thing (5 inch cylinder shaped) screwed into the trans area that your video did not show. It greatly impedes dropping the starter down.

What color were the wires? Purple to small connection and black(from battery) on the other?

My 1995 has a little thing (5 inch cylinder shaped) screwed into the trans area that your video did not show. It greatly impedes dropping the starter down.
