Again....I'm bowing in awe.....Frank, is by far, the greatest guitarist I have ever seen/heard. All HAIL!
Nothing short of Eddie or randy etc you don't get sound like that without being a master technician in the 80s n 90s when i saw him it was LOUD !!!!!!!!! A guy I know saw him round '74 even then it was LOUD AS HELL he said lol
I’m a king bee baby
And Frank got better with age. Live at the Agora is mind bending.
And he's a pretty damn good vocalist as well!
Incredible song, one of the best guitarists of all time...
Frank is for sure a Mt Rushmore guitarist. One of the greatest of all time. Good choice.
Best rock guitarist ever in my opinion. My jaw drops open so many times watching him play. Blows me away. I love the way he yells at the right moment as the music climaxes.
Agreed
Yes what’s odd. I like. Srv. But. Never understood why srv was the blues rock king on radio etc. when Frank. Had more to offer
Has to be the most kick ass guitar player of all time.
Ain't Dead Yet is rippin'! Frank is in a league of his own. He's definitely inspired many guitarists. Hopefully one day he tours again.
I witnessed Frank & his band live at a small nightclub in Minneapolis in the late 80's! Sooooooo much feeling, lightning fast speed, one of the best power trio's I have ever seen! Sooooooooo under-rated!
From 77-84 Frank was at his peak. On record and I believe live as well. If you're limited check out the live album and Mahogany Rush 4 through the masterful Juggernaut. And then he disappeared. I saw him live 3/3/83 after missing him a couple of times and 7 years later got the live recording of that show. Yes, he was fast but he was melodic and rhythmic and had his brother Vince filling in at that point. But on Ain't Dead Yet it was the last time that Jimmy Ayoub, (who was Frank's drummer from before the 1st LP Maxoom) was on record. A great way to say bye. Tim Biery replaced him and that's who I saw on tour w/Frank who came through Chicago 3 X's on the Juggernaut tour but he had enough of the business and it was a few years until he returned with "Full Circle." Not that he lost much but that 77-84 period whoa. And you get a taste of it with this track showing off his greatness. The words mean something too. I hope Frank is resting comfortably as I now he is not well these days. He gave so much. Last saw him in 2000.
The part hardly anyone knows is that Frank is a drummer at heart.
He stated that in an interview I can't reference but that is at his core.
Thank the Lord he went with the guitar imo because I've, at 66yo, seen many bands live, predominantly rock, and he is my favourite player by far.
I never know how to explain it but he's so free, effortless, melodic and beautiful even at high speed. His show at the Hammersmith Odeon, London ( the juggernaut tour I think ) in 78/79 was a part of my life I'll never forget.
I was there too mate, and he is by far still the best lead guitarist I have ever seen bar none. I stood for 2 hours with my mouth open, could not believe what I was seeing and hearing! And I've seen a few at 64 years old now. I rate him the greatest!
Frank played the drums on Dear Music from the Strange Universe album. Another little trivia, Corky Laing from Mountain, played the middle section of the song Strange Universe
Thanks - didn't know that!
Love that rock trivia 😊@@robertleven4449
Frank marino the most underatted guitarist on the planet. One of the greatest guitarists I have ever seen live.
Not known by the masses, but highly rated by all the guitar greats.
Fantastic Psychedelic/Rock/Blues/Jazz maestro.
Builds his own and pedals. Also Brilliant Studio Engineer and Producer
Been screaming about this song for decades. This is literally the first time I have heard anyone on here even give it a nod. That first solo about a minute in is one of the most terrifying guitar licks ever recorded.
As a 65yo head banger, I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like this in my life!
Been rocking FM &MR since 1979. My favorite rock guitarits hands down. Plays it live as just like in studio. Dude shreds. PERIOD.🤨
You guys should treat yourselves to the live DVD box set " Live at the Agora Theater". Six hours of incredible concert footage. It will blow your minds.
I bought it when was released and I just can't stop playing the damn thing. Truly amazing musicianship on display.
That is the best DVD set of all time.Frank is the best of the best, but is also a very nice man as well. His story is something everyone should know, just incredible!
Got it.
And that is his Crowning achievement. Sad how his health suddenly changed.
Luckily I have seen Frank Marino three times.
Frank gets on the guitarist version of Mt Rushmore right next to Jimi. The sheer virtuosity and breadth of his style in combination is probably unmatched by anyone else.
There is a ton of other guitarists matching your description but for this searing heavy blues-rock style, Frank for me is the best. Perhaps Gary Moore after him.
@@a.s.2426 A ton of other guitarists that match Frank Marino? You might find some others that match his technical ability (damn few though) but none of them have the same breadth. Listen to Franks version of Red House; a brilliant fusion of jazz and acid blues and name one other guitarist that has done that at Frank's level.
@nunyabizness6546 Marino is one of my favorite artists in any genre. I think we both know, however, that sweeping generalizations such as “none of them have the same breadth” are ultimately seeking a precision that isn’t there. What is “breadth” anyway? There is no science of breadth. Maybe we just leave it at: There are many good players out there who can play a lot of good things and Frank is definitely one of them. I’m just enthusiastic as you about Frank, though!
@@a.s.2426 you straw manned me a little bit. I didn't say none of them have the same breadth, I said the combination of his Technical virtuosity and his breadth of style are virtually unmatched. Also, I disagree that breadth, is not precise. It means extent.
In other words, I have heard other guitarists who were technically on Frank's level, and I have heard some guitarist who have a breadth or wide range of different styles, some of them even wider than frank's, but the combination of the two is something I have not heard in other guitarists.
Now that that is out of the way, I'll say I agree with you for the most part. There are tons of really really good guitarists out there. Most of them, you've probably never even heard of. Almost every part of the country has some regionally popular bands or performers who are amazing.
I saw Frank twice in Quebec city. At the end of one of the show, his girlfriend gave us the opportunity to have our albums signed. He did signed ALL the albums i had with me. I said to myself it's maybe the only chance i'd have and it happened. My collection is completed now and i'm quite happy. 👍😎
Saw Frank play a 2 and a half hour show in 1983 here in the UK. He was mindblowing!
That's what you call message and delivery, Frank is very good at that. Frank was my guitar hero in the late 70's -I didn't really need any others.
Frank's SG is fitted with single coil pick ups and a tremolo of his own design. For a guitar antithesis to this check out Be-Bop Deluxe - Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape live at the BBC 1974, simply beautiful.
Frank is The King!
Much love and appreciation for anyone that does mahogany rush.
I absolutely concur with that statement! Guitar God, Eric Clapton couldn't even tie his shoes. " Amen "! love that you gents are introducing one of the all time greats to the viewers. I consider myself lucky enough to have seen Frank live three times. Always totally killing it and a gentleman after shows as well.
Good Morning Gents. When you find the time give a listen to the title track to Frank's release " Tales of The Unexpected ". The studio version is unbelievable. The entire band is firing on all cylinders in this near eight minute instrumental masterpiece. Unfortunately I have never found a live video of this song. There is a condensed version on Frank's " Real Live " album with approximately four minutes edited form the original. If you ever find this in video form please share, I definitely will if I come across it. One of my all time favorites from this legend. Take care, Joe.
He was the best at Cal Jam 78.
How have you guys missed Frank...?? He is truly supreme.... plays and sings it as it is....
Frank was shredding before they even had a name for it!
Voilà !!! We called that..."Shooting" in those times. He shoots. Y tire en tabarnak!!!!
Frank Marino is the uncrowned king he really is the unknown great of grades he’s on the level with anybody else that you can name and rock ‘n’ roll I don’t care who it is laid across the line that’s it end of story anybody who doesn’t realize that and respect that I just don’t understand I’ve come to realize this after many years of Listening to him and getting to know his music more and more someone turned me onto him 30 years ago and the more I hear from him the more I realize he’s one of the unknown greats flies right under the radar I don’t know why the people that know him know him and the people that don’t are in for a big surprise
@@jaymalachapa2353 , I’ve done the same with no luck. I just unsubscribe after a while of hearing the same ole thing.
This actually is Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, I started seeing them live since 1972, even before their first LP Maxoom, thirty some times and he never changed the name of his band. I live 90 minutes from Montreal, so, an easy drive to watch perfection. They are touring again this summer in the States, check the dates, they might be near you 🎸👍🏻
Thanks for the comment. Yes I was born and raised in Montreal and now in Toronto. Some of the best bands came from the Great White North. Thanks for watching, hope you're subscribed. 🤘
I grew up listening to this in Kentucky. They called it "acid rock" and most had never heard of FM&MR.
'64 SG, reversed lead pickup, Ala Hendrix with 8's. And it's a Maestro Vibrato, not sure how he kept in tune, but he did every night.
Check out Marino's What's Next and The Power of Rock'N'Roll albums - they're chock-a-block of wild solos like "Ain't Dead Yet". Pay specific attention to "Something's Comin' Our Way" off What's Next ... it contains THE greatest guitar solo of all time IMO. Wowza!
Have you heard the the live version of 'Something's Comin' Our Way' from the recent 'Live At The Agora Theatre' DVD? I know It's difficult to believe, but as great as the studio version is, this live version has an absolute monster guitar solo and blows the studio version into the weeds in comparison.
@@WhizzRichardThompson Yep - I have the box set ... I actually did a review of it (refer to link below if interested). I love the whole (extended!) package, but I gotta say that personally I find the studio tracks superior. Regardless, it's all good stuff! Take care. www.themightydecibel.com/single-post/2019/09/03/FRANK-MARINO---Live-At-The-Agora-Theatre-DVD-Review
@@themightydecibel-heavymeta7130 I read your excellent review and whilst I agree that the 3rd set has the most incendiary guitar work on it, there's plenty of great stuff on the first 2 sets as well. I like a bit of light and shade, so for me it's good to have some more laid back stuff as well as the face melting guitar solos Frank specialises in. BTW, 'The Power Of Rock And Roll' is my fave FM album, which arguably his heaviest.
Awesome and tight track from Mr. Marino from nearly forty years ago. Glad that you also gave a well-deserved shout-out to the fantastic
rhythm section on this one, and additional kudos to Furdog1961 for both making the recommendation as well as the informative comment further down this thread!!
Couple of things, that was a studio recording(from The Power of Rock'n Roll) with a really good video montage. Tim Briery was playing the drums and Paul Harwood(the original Mahogany Rush Bass player) was wailing on the Bass. All of Frank's many albums are awesome. Frank is also a great humanitarian and a super humble human being which gives his music some real substance...if you like substance. Cheers from Vancouver Island, Canada.
Cheers! 🤘🍁🎸
Frank is so good it defies description! Like the man is powered by every guitar master that ever lived and died. I've been playing guitar quite adequately for more than 46 years and Franks music actually scares me, I will never reach his level if I played for a thousand years!!
Just stumbled across this,... wow! I had the honor of seeing Frank play at the Birmingham Odeon UK around 1982 ish. Amazing player unique sound🤟
🤘🔥
One of Frank's best! Untouched wah wah mastery by anyone!!!
Auto wah
@@kmichaelp4508 whatever he uses doesn't matter, his wah wah is still untouched by anyone!
That audio was from the album "The Power of Rock & Roll" which came out in 1981. Somebody cleverly took a bunch of old live footage-for instance, Live a Bromont in 1979-and cut it together to match the album. However you're notice the his clothes and the stage setup changes from shot to shot. Frank is one of the greatest ever, but the music and video are separate.
It’s actually an edited version at that. The mid-song break is shortened.
Frank Marino was way ahead of his time. Incredible!
Just a couple of things on this vid (yes, I know it’s two years old).
And, these things may be mentioned in other comments too. Don’t want to steal thunder.
That is the studio version of the song superimposed under concert footage. Notice the outfit changes?
So, you are both correct in saying it’s one damn fine tune and that Frank Marino is a beast of a player.
He is possibly the best there’s ever been.
This album and the band were probably named by the record company. I’ve heard Marino say he disliked the cover. So any speculation about where the “Mahogany Rush “ name went is just that.
I’ve also heard Marino disavow the tale of being reincarnated with the spirit of Hendrix. A magazine writer basically made it up. It’s been a hard thing for him to shake.
He put many, many hours into honing his skills on a guitar. One doesn’t “wake up” and play like that. He’s clearly a brilliant guy with more than a basic understanding of what a fretboard and six strings are about and what can be done with them.
Saw Frank in 1979 at the Day on the Green/Monsters of Rock in Oakland. Absolutely blew my mind. I can still remember the goosebumps when he went from World Anthem into Purple Haze channeling Hendrix.
Frank Marino is Magnificent, port vale 81 ✌
Funny how the video shows old footage of Frank with the mustache even though he shaved it off a few years before the power of rock and roll album came out. Love Frank!
I have always been a Frank Marino Fan. I saw him Live at Two different Concerts at the Summit in Houston 10:29 . I saw him again at a Club called Cardi’s in Houston. I was only about 10’ away from him there. I was just Amazed. He was the best in Concert performance of anyone, and I went to a lot of them back then.
This was Mahogany Rush , Paul on Bass and Jimmy on drums , same lineup that played Cal Jam , Frank is a perfectionist , He has a great style using rock , jazz and blues ,
There's so little appreciation for this man. But hid facility is so far and way among the greatest payers ever to play and is in many ways beyond most. He is a supreme virtuoso but also deeply powerfil and searing soul. IT's a studio albbum with a video montage.
When this guy finished playing a set, the guitar had to take a long breather.
Same here the best guitarist ever!!!
Man Oh Man!!! I caught Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush back in 1978 at the TEXAS JAM He and the Band were EXXXcelent!!!! not alot of people stayed to catch him because after Aerosmith they had a huge fire works show and everyone left from over 70,0000 people to about 250 that remained but Frank still kicked ass!! I will never forget Frank Marino and His fantastic guitar Playing. Frank must have had a mirror Pick guard on His SG that night because every where He went a Laser came reflecting off His guitar that night!!!STARRRRS. Sad to hear Hes not touring anymore!
Just thought about recommend this to people, then i saw you in the list - good choice!
NEVER have anything rocked this much, the sheer JOY OF PLAY make for a nonstop-heck-the-man-just-cant-stop playing... til 4:42 then the maniac put in next gear! wtf :)
Makes me so happy i have felled tears
DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS I EVER SEEN, THE POWER OF ROCK AND ROLL AT THE WAX MUSEUM IN GEORGETOWN WASHINGTON DC 1982 👍✌️
Always been my favourite guitarist, very very sad he's not well known..
Frank Marino un grande entre los grandes.....
Я думаю что будущие на то время гитаристы многое почерпнули у Фрэнка , такие гитаристы как Рэнди Роудс,Сатриане , Закк Вайлд и многие другие .
My favorite album is What’s Next. Something’s Comin’ Our Way might become your #1 favorite song.
Frank's gotta fucking groove goin' on here! Killing it
I read a different story about his hospital stay and suddenly playing great guitar.
Sort of the same story, but at first, he began to play like his favorite guitarist.... who was Jerry Garcia! Then only later, picked up on the Hendrix style. Don't know if that is true, but it was put into print as a fact. Bizarre and very interesting, if true, obviously.
I have been a casual fan of Frank, but never heard this song until now (recommended on another RUclips channel in the comments). That guy said he knew many hot shot guitarists who could easily play 'Eruption' by EVH, but when he challenged them to play 'Ain't Dead Yet,' he had no takers. I understand why, now. Amazing playing on a great song!
Saw him w/Mahogany Rush in 1978 at the
💥1st TEXXAS WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL💥
👋👁💥👁👍
That trem is called a Vibrola and is a Gibson thing. Very different from any other trem.
Sweet! Thanks guys. Great way to start the Rockin 20's. Maybe some Pat Travers in the future?
Cmon guys..the video was complication from many years….the music was from the studio album….there was no teeth playing in that jam.
Yep. Obvious. But doesn’t take away anything from the song. And I’ve seen them 4 times. The last in a smallish club in the eighties up close and personal. Wow is all I can say.
He never officially made a video for this song. All the video clips were from old footage of different songs. I am not aware of him ever playing this live. There was a serious dispute with the record company about this record. One he rarely even talks about.
And yes, he OD'd on LSD as a kid and imagined how to play while in the hospital. Exited the hospital knowing how to play like this. That is from an interview with him. True story. He is also an amazing drummer.
Thanks for the interesting info!
Frank Marino could play Jimi Hendrix songs but Jimi couldn't play like Frank, a long time Hendrix fan, but Frank's the best,
I agree, very well put.👍👍
If you want to know about all the mods he's done, listen to Frank here ruclips.net/video/1xri8O2UhfE/видео.html
This is Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. Frank was forced to use his name only for this record. You mention lots of times that Frank’s guitar playing is influensed from Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, etc. I don’t agree, Frank has his oen style and the other guitar players are influenced by Frank.
Br
Peter from Frillesås, Sweden
PS, I have every record with Frank.
Maybe not so much Trower, but there is no question that Frank was highly influenced by Hendrix and his playing and vocals show it consistently. Thanks for watching. 🤘
@@UnhingedReactions many guitarists cite Frank as influence including both Joe Bonamassa and Steve Vai who said he inspired them to play guitar= Frank covers Hendrix and obviously admired him but Frank is much faster and also plays a wider variety of styles
Saw frank 5x from dbbl live time --2000's stellar player
To say he's underrated just doesn't cut it... he must be one of top five greatest ever to have existed...!!
Unhinged Reactions,
By the you reacted to this, I am sure we`ll see a great reaction reaction as you listen to the insane guitar work from Frank Marino on his monster track called DITCH QUEEN.
It is graced by arguably one of the greatest and heaviest guitar solos ever put down on a killer rock song.
Thanks this was a badass as song! I hear the parts to Mr. Crowley I guess Frank Marino had influence on Randy Rhoads!
Frank opened for Nugent twice in Massachusets in the 80's and truly stole the show.
Frank uses the same SG he has used since the 70's.that dream story is made up by a interviewer.
You need to study more about Frank's guitar modifications to SGs with 3 Strat Style pickups.
These are not SG's. They are Les Paul Standard models. 1961 or 1962 I think.
@@johnhargenrader8972 He talks about it here ruclips.net/video/1xri8O2UhfE/видео.html
That was not live, it was the studio version! Frank plays 1961 SG.

His shows are long. 4-6 hours of this level of energy. You are exhausted from just listening to him.
That whole album is too hot!
Indeed. He's just pure soul and 🔥.
Monster Guitarist. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Now try "Poppy" :)
Good stuff think the guitar sound was very advanced for 1981. don't think the video was live but very well put together.
Try "It's Begun to Rain" by Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush
Give a listen to Land of a Thousand Nights on the Strange Universe album from M R
A couple of Frank's early songs had a sort of Hendrix sound, however Frank's music, guitar playing overall doesn't sound like Hendrix, all musicians are influenced by those before, Frank's music has its own sound, whereas Robin Trower I think tried a little too hard to replicate hendrix, in my unbiased opinion, Frank is the best guitarist of all time, or our time, he's cleaner, he's more crisp and more of a disciplined player, lightning fast clear and to be the vocalist and play guitar, there is definitely no one who could do it better, very cool
Only album showing frank playing a les Paul lol frank says he wasn't happy with the LPS layout and trying to market him as another Ted neugent
Very David Lee Roth-era VH-sounding vocals here, for me. A bit of a modernized Marino sound on this record.
This should have been a big hit,but when your at odds with records company they won't promote your music !
The Juggernaut album, was his best in my book.If you liked this one, you'll like Ditch Queen.
