Sorry, but I have to give you more info about Frank. He started in the music world in 1969 at the age of 15. His parents had toalso sign his record contract. He formed Mahogany Rush in 1971. His first albu. Maxoom I believe was released in 1973. He is mostly self taught on the guitar. The story behind that is very bazaar and wild. He did not graduate from high school and is self taught in electronics, physics, math, and other studies. He is an amazing and intelligent man that is an inspiration to me. The dvd Live at the Agora Theater comes with a 180 page book that Frank wrote the second part of. He tells his story of himself and his music. It is a great read. Maybe someone will the dvd/blu-ray package to you. It is probably the best live set recording available. It' really good. Sorry to take up more of the comment space. Also, before I go, the band started as a trio. But Frank later added his brothe Vince on rhythm guitar. The other menmbers at that time were Jimmy Ayoub on drums and paul Harwood on bass. These guys together were on of the bedt bands around. The guys were good. Agian, sorry to take up more of you time and space.

Very cool request, Frank Marino is the real deal. When Frank Zappa said "Shut up and play yer guitar" Marino listened. And you're right Nick, he doesn't get enough love. Even during his late 70s early 80s heyday he only had moderate success, but he definitely deserved more. And I can also tell you that during that same heyday period, not too many headliners wanted to follow him on the stage. He was always in more of his element playing live. I know you don't jump to live albums but Mahogany Rush Live is essential listening

Hi, I grew up listening to Frank Marino. I went to every Concert he was in in Houston, and once saw him in a Club called Cardi’s. I was only about 15’ away from him, and it was unreal watching him Play. I was a up and coming Guitarist in Houston. These weren’t even his best 4 Songs. He was Playing Concerts back when Hendrix was Alive. A lot of Times it was just a 3 Piece Band and the Power they put out was incredible. He is the most underrated Guitarist in History! He wouldn’t give in to the Record Company’s and Shorten his Songs, or change his style to more Radio Friendly. Frank always played his Songs his way. It didn’t matter if Frank was playing a Concert with Ted Nugent, Aerosmith or whoever. All you could think about after seeing him Live, was how Frank blew anyone else on the Venue away. Very very powerful in Concert. Franks playing in a Concert where he’s really Free to cut loose is even better than his Albums. You know the feeling when you’re in a Recording Studio, it starts getting really boring after a while. Plus you don’t really have the freedom to cut loose in a Studio a lot of Times. You should check out Franks Songs, He’s Calling, or Voodoo Child, The World Anthem, Every Song Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush put out was great. Long Live Frank Marino. 👍👍❤️

What a treat it was! Fast and still interesting and stylish blues, rock and hard rock if you will. If you want the best version of Chuck Berry`s "Johnny B.Goode", go for their Live album. My favourite are "The Answer" and "Dragonfly". Sounds a bit like Jimi Hendrix. And that´s an honour in my opinion :-) They also had guitar duels with Ted Nugent in the 70`s if I remember correctly.

He is legendary in the guitar and has a large and faithful fan base. He has very influential to many of the guitsr players of today. Zakk Wylde, Joe Bonamassa, Paul Gilbert and many others state they wre influenced by Frank. He is one of the last of the Hendrix era players. He is well known for his technique and precision. He is not a bad singer either. He is classified as metal, but Frank has stated his music is the Grateful Dead meets Jazz. He is a powerful and the most explosive player you will ever hear. He released a 6 hour dvd in 2019. Great story behind that. There is a song on you tube Lex would like. It is called it's begun to rain. It shows how well Frank can play other genres other than his face melting guitar solo rock. This song is very jazzy. Frank is known as the original shredder. Check out the 1978 live album and be blown away. Thank you for checking this band out. Hard to get other reacter to do any of his music. His music is not readily radio friendly. Thank you again!

Frank Marino is one of those ‘best guitarist you’ve never heard of’ types. Very under the radar.
The height of his popularity was arguably the late ‘70’s. He and his band toured quite extensively and one of the highlights of his career was a set at the legendary Cal Jam II.
I had a copy of “Mahogany Rush Live” when I was a teen and just learning to play guitar. Frank was my template - what I was striving for (but never ultimately achieved). I played that album so many times I wore out the grooves and almost got myself disowned by my parents.
Part of the reason you’ve never heard of him is the fact that most critics hated him. It’s not easy to be a part of the collective consciousness without at least a little critical approval.
I seem to recall a story somewhere where Frank claimed to be the reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix. Can’t vouch for the validity of that story, but it kinda led to him being labelled ‘pretentious’.
He also had arguably THE largest pedalboard of any ‘70’s era guitarist. I myself don’t consider that a bad thing, but again - turned off the critics big time. He’s still a smokin player whether he uses 1 pedal or 100…
Anyways, congrats on discovering Mr. Marino. 👍

People said he was the Reincarnation of Hendrix. Frank never said that. Rumors started that he said it, but it wasn’t True and it burned him a little bit. When it comes down to it, Frank Marino blows Hendrix away.

Saw Frank and Mahogany Rush twice in the 1970s, the first time his set was a tribute to Jimi Hendrix and most of the set was covers of Jim's classic songs and he was spot on. The next time he opened for Queen on their Sheer Heart Attack tour and mainly did hit original stuff and really launched into the stratosphere with his own psychedelic, hard rock. We would have been happy to just see him then Queen came out and showed their already superstar qualities. Great stuff, Land of A 1,000 Nights is amazing! Enjoy. 🎸

Toronto and Canada's biggest band, Rush was formed in 1968 but didn't get their first LP release till 1974; Mahogany Rush was formed in 1969 and came out of Toronto's rival city Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1969 ( with zero knowledge of the existence of the other Rush ) but released their first album first in 1972. Mahoghany Rush was always the baby of lead singer and lead guitarist Frank Marino. Both bands were trios until Frank added his brother on rhythm guitar later in the 1970's. The early MH albums are phantasmagorical journeys, true psychedelic mission music masterpieces borne from the 1960's, morphing into extensions of acid blues heavily influenced by the likes of Hendrix, Santana, Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer, Chuck Berry, Cream, Django Reinhardt and The Grateful Dead. None of this of course was remotely commercial music and despite new Federal Government legislation that forced radio stations to play some substantial amounts of Canadian music made by Canadian artists, MH received almost zero radio airplay when that still mattered, long before the internet. FM radio was emerging in the early 1970's, but it had limited reach in Canada at the time. Most of this music was far too much for the average rock fan of that or any era to satisfyingly digest. Despite these limitations, they built a larger than cult following through live performance and word of mouth. In 1978, they appeared at CAL JAM II in front of approx. 400,000 people at Ontario Motor Speedway, California. This was not nearly as heavy a show as the first CAL JAM in 1974 ( Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, ELP & Black Oak Arkansas and other less heavy acts ). Despite this, the boys brought huge heavy energy to the massive outdoor festival that was also attended by 100-150 thousand more people ( based on paying customers, total actual attendance was probably similar for both concerts). Regardless, these were the largest rock shows ever up to that point in time. Mahogany Rush's performance one could say politely, ...... blew Ted Nugent, Foreigner and Aerosmith and their respective guitarists: Onkel Ted, Mick Jones and a very sloppy Joe Perry off the massive stage. Mahogany Rush and Santana probably had the best overall performances that left a positive, memorable impression.
Due to his style ( and his own somewhat bizarre tales of being reincarnated/possessed by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix when he passed away ), Frank was often labelled by the international and domestic press as "The Canadian Hendrix." Similarly, other guitar players were branded with this unfair label in the 1970's. Robin Trower ( originally from Procol Harum ) was touted as "The English Hendrix," and Uli Jon Roth (originally in the best, heaviest, early incarnation of the Scorpions ) was pasted with "The German Hendrix" label. All of their careers were helped in the short term by this via increased publicity, but ultimately it was a major hindrance through oversimplification and typical music industry misbranding of art. In the 1980's I booked a dozen shows for Frank and MH, mostly in large clubs and some outdoor Fall Fair shows in Canada. Frank and the band were outstanding! It was draining to watch Frank sing and play such intense and varied guitar styles over two hours straight every night ( sometimes longer ). Like Hendrix, he has followed the diminishing tradition of the dynamic, heavy rock & roll/blues guitar player who also sings lead ( Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher, Steve Marriott, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore and a few others ). I can tell you from experience that his stage volume was so loud in some pretty large clubs, that the soundman turned him off to the mains, and he was still deafening! Marino recently retired from touring due to an unexpected debilitating illness. This band is of course extremely underrated, but they certainly influenced a lot of other great musicians. Take a deep dive and listen to the entire albums and get blown away by their breadth, depth, and versatility, all wrapped in a unique, original musical language that defies any categorical, trendy or pretentious label.

      @SPAZZOBOXER 2 года назад +2

Mea Culpa, when hastily writing this response, I mistakenly typed Robin Trower instead of Pat Travers at the head of the list for lead guitar players who also sing ( I subconsciously and consciously omitted Eric Clapton from the list because after Cream, I found his output to be creatively and technically in a long decline ) . The great Robin Trower did not sing lead, although very late in his sixty plus year career, he did provide vocals on one of his many records. Canadian Pat Travers is a dynamic performer who rocked out many an arena and night club over the years. As a note, it was in an early incarnation of Pat's band that he formed in England, which also featured a very young Nicko McBrain on drums. It gave Nicko his professional apprenticeship that eventually projected him to his long tenure in Iron Maiden. I also had the good fortune to book both Trower & Travers in the 1980's and 90's. It is not an exaggeration to say that both were incredible performers. Man, what long term talent the rock and roll world produced in the mid 60's through the 70's! The world was on fire with passion, protest and creative innovation through musical fusion; emerging dreams of idealism, passionate humanism and alternate nirvanas legitimately fueled multitudes of artists who were not solely motivated by developing a "brand" and enhancing monetization of their personal art through unacceptable compromises ( At least not as much as today ). Anyway, listen to more Mahogany Rush with Frank rocking that Gibson SG unlike anyone else.

Jose, stellar picks for the marathon.
Nick you have been doing great with these marathons & 70's guitarist. Tommy Bolin, Rainbow, now Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, what great band.
Frank Marino - Guitar & Vocals
    Paul Harwood - Bass
    Jim Ayoub - Drums
Seen them many times, a few times opening up for bands, can you imagine following that.
They was great picks by Jose. But Nick there are other sides to these guys. They do a real nice version of the Beatles Norwegian Wood that's pretty trippy. Their first Live album shows different sides of them.Great cuts off that the Answer, then Dragonfly is a slow funky song. I'm a King Bee, a nice little blues number that dabbles in some jazz playing. The Rocking cover of Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode. And then you have the Hendrix like Electric Refections of War, into World Anthem. Just one of the greatest live albums from one of the greatest guitarists.
Nick, there more out there to that you scratch your head & wonder how he wasn't huge. But he does have a loyal following & we appreciate the love your giving him.
Another one of those Bands is the Pat Travers Band. I love P.T., always had great Musicians playing with him, had a couple of songs that made it to the radio by never hit it huge. So many great songs & again, different styles of music, but like Frank Marino, their here to kick your ass.

    Nick,
I also NEED to do a deep dive into Frank Marino AND Frank Marino/Mahogany Rush. I 1st heard about them, possibly in 1975? As a kid watching late at night, either "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" or "The Midnight Special", and I remember live footage of him playing a couple of tracks, but also his version of "King Bee", as a pre-teen, just blown away by his Guitar Playing _and_ vocals. I have no idea why my Dad, and then later me, did not go and purchase albums by him.
Yet another that I definitely have to rediscover! These were awesome tracks, but YOU also have MANY "Canucks" to checkout and many being mentioned.
    And now . . . . .
    *Branching Out*
I am with you on THIS, as its yet another "precursor" Hard/Heavy Rock band to Heavy Metal. This may have been TOO heavy for _most_ AOR FM Rock stations, but even then, they had their hardcore fans rockin' out to them.
But . . . I'm hoping you keep the "Metal" show along with the "Rock" idea, because I love both. But I lean to Metal and Progressive music, and anxious for you and others to hear what the "few" of us are wanting to share, with all of you. And if there is a Jazz/Fusion show, as Lexi recuperates, the more variety the better. But I'm confused . . . there was some Death Metal you "enjoyed" and expressed it, and really, you're just touching the surface of various Metal bands. Like waiting for the audience to grow, your senses and the music may grow on you in time (its happened to many of us).
I HOPE you know that I (and I presume others) REALLY look forward to your reactions solo and with Lexi, but I really have a special place for Metal & Progressive Music, so when I see those familiar or obscure titles in the latest reaction . . . I'm ready to go! As Mike Portnoy has said: ruclips.net/video/_6ISFr8xoLI/видео.html
    - Really enjoyed the music in this one Nick. Trying to catch-up to all the recent reactions . . . .
