I loved that Paolini didn’t just ignore the insane amounts of trauma that Murtagh and Thorn suffered. He didn’t shy away from it and he was genuine about things that can help victims reclaim their autonomy and will.
Great little book! Love the way it was structured with the chapters. The audiobook had really cool scoring. I will say that even after all these years this story kinda put me through it as far as being stressed out for Murt. He’s always in some bs 😭
I loved this book! The whole book gave me a Zuko Alone vibe and that is one of my favorite episodes of ATLA! I love a story about characters fighting to be better and escape their past. My complaint does come from the pace of the last third of the book as well, while I never wanted to stop reading, I was ready to leave the place we were at! I hope Murtagh gets a happy ending when Mr. Paolini has concluded writing in this world. Murtagh has some lines about parenting that were bringing tears to my eyes and I would love to read about him with some hatchlings!
@@GrahamBradley My only thing about this book is that what the ultimate evil in this franchise has been shown to be is a blatant ripoff of Alduin from Skyrim.
I like how he addressed the trauma him and Thorn went through and how you cant always fully come back from. I didnt expect the book to be so heavy and i did end up crying a little.
6:46 100% facts right here. We’ve seen it a lot lately in any story telling be it books or movies and it’s super frustrating. Is there some unspoken writers rule about not giving closure to major plot threads? Do writers consider their story “edgy” or “thought provoking” when they “break” expectations and just leave several story plots open or unresolved? Reality check: it’s not. No one wants to spend their entire reading journey building up to something just for the ending to be some tangled unresolved mess that’s considered “cool” bc you couldn’t predict anything happening at the end bc nothing did, in fact, happen at the end. Glad to hear Murtagh does NOT fall into this category.
Hello! I listened to the Audiobook during a very tough time at work just a month or two before I had to quit my job. I was i the same state of near-constant exhaustion and tribulations as Murtagh and Thorn, and getting to read the book at the time made it a very poignant, relatable and moving experience. I found the flavor/atmosphere of "not a horror story, but just as harrowing" from the second half of the book to be extremely destablizing in a GREAT WAY. I truly did feel afraid and anxious regarding that big big thing far underground, and all that goes with it 🙏 Thank you very much for your review! I enjoyed listening 🤗
@@GrahamBradley No need to be sorry about my job! 😁 It's over now, and Murtagh the kind of story that, when it matches your life circumstances at the time, makes the whole ordeal seem poetic and that much more worthwhile in hindsight! 😇 Have a great day!
@@Mathilde_Moksha_333 The thing you refer to is just a blatant ripoff of Alduin from Skyrim. Murtagh: *casts spell thru the hole* Wingless black dragon god thing: You have grown strong young one. But I am Al-Du-In, firstborn of Akatosh. I cannot be slain here, by you or anyone else.
Great review, and obviously I am here because I loved the book. As we all have grown a lot since that first book came out, I only hope that this book gets the attention it deserves and we get to see the series progress. Paolini's writing and character development has indeed progressed a lot. What is your take Paolini developing and changing this Tolkin-esque world? In my understanding the world as in Murtagh is far more deep and complex, I just hope that if the series grows, it will not get unrelated to the first books. I am looking forward to the spoilers included review!
I think it's a natural itch for him to make it less Tolkien-derived without undoing anything he established already. You'll see how he lays the groundwork for that in Murtagh, there's more to the world than just the continent of Alagaesia, and more types of magic than just the elf language. AFAIK he's gonna do more, so I'm on board!
He was also heavily influenced by George Martin as well. I saw an interview with the two of them but it was before i knew who George and Ice and Fire were.
The thing I had the hardest time with on this book was it didn’t have all the other characters that the first 4 books had so the entire book only had a couple of different characters to focus on in each chapter instead of all the main characters in the first 4 books.
Great recap and analysis. My pre-ordered book came last week, but I just barely started reading Inheritance as I re-read the series. Also, your comments about building a life together vs teen romance novels is something I talk to my wife about CONSTANTLY! Haha! I'm sure she's sick of it. Specifically, I mention "romance" as portrayed in songs. It kind of irritates me.
For sure! And it's fun to be all twitterpated and stuff, but long-lasting love has to be built on something more enduring than that. Anybody can have a good night kiss after an enjoyable date, real love is doing the damn laundry together because you like her that much.
@GrahamBradley Haha!! 🤣🤣 I couldn't agree more with the laundry statement! I absolutely hate trimming bushes and doing dishes. The only reason I do them is out of love for my wife.
Also this is not Book 5. It’s the fifth book but this one, according to CP, is not exactly Book 5. More of a side story that moves the story along Also also, if you want discussion the Eragon subreddit is the place to be. Great folks and discussions over there
I stumbled upon ur channel and appreciate ur videos. Have you read " Between two fires" by Christopher buehlman ? Id love to see a video on it. Thoughts, opinions, discussions.
Haven't heard of that one. I just looked it up, it sounds good. I'll have to add it to the massive TBR pile. My latest complete book review was of one of the Warhammer novels, I try to post a thorough review once a week or so, in between my regular stuff. Looks like my library has the audiobook though 👍
@GrahamBradley Mr buehlman also does his own reading of the book for free on his RUclips channel.ill wait patiently and enjoy some of your other videos until you get around to it.

Redemption arcs are some of the most fulfilling in fiction, I prefer them to the basic Hero's Journey.
Might watch ATLA again now.
