Sharon turning villain was deeply frustrating for me. As someone who likes her character from the comics and who's been bothered by her being sidelined in the Captain America films, I was so excited and hopeful when I heard she'd be in this show. There were so many arcs and storylines they could have pulled from (and I thought they were, at one point, with how she's been exiled from the country she fought for), but instead they do a complete 180 with her character. When the character itself is already kind of hated (thanks to petty fandom reasons that almost entirely have to do with shipping), to have Sharon become this villain felt like a huge disservice to what they could have done with her. The whole "jaded former intelligence operative turns against her country" doesn't track when what we've seen of her has been loyalty to higher ideals despite resistance (speaking out to Alexander Pierce and standing up to Rumlow in CA:TWS, aiding Steve & co. to do what's right despite the laws restricting them in CA:CW). It all felt off to me, like shock value that absolutely did not deliver.

Agree - there were a lot of bits I really enjoyed, and the cast/production was phenomenal, but I think the story needed to be tightened up a bit. Just felt a bit "and then this and then this and then this" and not enough was allowed to 'sit' and be focused on. But at the same time, it felt padded? It felt like they'd spread out a movie and added stuff in here and there, rather than written a series from scratch.

Along the lines of first draft writing: I felt like a lot of characters were written lines that were weird or something no one would say solely for the purpose of setting up a different character's dramatic/quippy response.

Everything was just SO rushed?? Like I loved the series, but the last episode should have been at least 2. They squashed way too much in, and then didn't satisfactorily finish most of the story lines. Like the whole thing with Yori?? They spend a long time showing their relationship and getting us invested and it all ended so quickly. Still enjoyed it though, just wish there could have been more.

They could’ve done with having nine episodes to help fill out all storylines a bit more and complete them all.
I loved Isaiah Bradley we deffo needed more of him.
One thing I noticed with John Walker as Cap, he was a perfect soldier who the government chose to be Captain America, but when Erskine developed the serum he said to Steve that the right candidate to receive the serum needs to be a good man and not a perfect soldier.
John Walker was always a perfect soldier, where as Steve and Sam were good men (I know Sam didn’t get the serum but I feel like the perfect soldier versus good man argument applies to the role of Captain America as well as a super soldier)
I did like the parallels they started to show between Sam and John though, like the discussions on whether to take super soldier serum/if they would take it if offered

Daniel J. Layton One thing that also bugged me and needed more screen time and explanation was Sharon turning out to be a secret big bad guy. I mean it seems like a stretch. Yeah she was willing to Break rules for Steve but with good intention, but to be at the point where she is, what happened in those two years she was on the run (she was the power broker before the snap according to the guy who made the serum).
It just seems a bit of a stretch for Peggy Carter‘s niece to be the powerbroker who casually kills people with mercury vapour and shoots teenagers. Hopefully that and the John Walker storyline will be fleshed out more in the future with other projects (sadly I don’t think we’ll see much if any more of Yori or Isaiah Bradley, but maybe his grandson though)

    • @Maryam-mz7jo
      @Maryam-mz7jo 3 года назад +3

I also started to notice the Steve/Walker parallels at some point. I think the big one for me was when Lemar was killed. It felt similar to when Steve saw Bucky fall from the train. Their difference being the way they coped with Steve trying to get drunk and crying and Walker immediately committing a rage-murder. Good stuff

At first I was a bit sad when you said on ig that you didnt like it. Bucky is my favourite character and he has been so under-represented in the MCU that i feel an odd and hidden need to defend the show.
But i completely agree with all of the points you made. Especially WANTING to love the show even though parts of it didnt work for me.
My friends and i would spend two hours after every episode going over our favourite moments, everything that we didnt understand, sharing fan theories etc etc. By the end of episode 4 all of us agreed that there was no way they were gonna wrap it all up NICELY by episode 6. There was just soooo much going on. I was CERTAIN there'd be a second season because of the sheer number of WTFs i was left with.
Still a lot of my criticism is on the writing part.
I think acting wise everyone did great. Wyatt Russell, Daniel Bruhl, Erin Kellyman, just everyone.
Above all I adore Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan and i feel like their dynamic and acting and some of the great moments they had is what made the show work for me.
LOVED THE VIDEO, DAN! hurt me with the truths i wanted to ignore but LOVE IT

Though Zemo's character arc does make sense as years in solitary prison changes a person and I wish that was explored more in the show aswell. Like there is so much good points it just needed more run time to explore properly.

I think one of the problems was how soon after Wandavision it aired- it had so much to live up to after such an amazing show, that it was already set up to fall short. If there had been a couple of months between the finale of Wandavision and the first episode of FATWS, I don’t think people would have been so hard on it!

I was really hoping that Walker was going to be the Big Bad in the series finale. I was rooting for him to turn into this glorified version of a Fallen Hero gone very dark. I wanted to see more of a perversion (WC?) of this idea of the Perfect American. A choke hold on the values that he was supposed to portray in a way that makes the viewer uncomfortable with them.
The fact that he so easily was suddenly goodish again at the end, with this mysterious lady offering him side work as the US Agent- I dunno. Felt like a cop out from having a potentially really great villain.
Will be honest, I enjoyed Sam and Bucky's developed friendship. It wasn't perfect but it was fun. And despite what I've said, I really enjoyed it. Not as much as WandaVision but I still really liked it.

I really thought Zemo's incongruity was reflected in his flats. They were beautiful, opulent palaces in what seemed to be run down old buildings in these forgotten corners of the world. But also, what does flat 1 & 3 of that building look like? Does that question make sense? It really wasn't clear to me how they fit into their world. So while I think it comes off a good thematic comment on Zemo himself (opulence surrounded by poverty, oldest part of the world order asserting itself - a theme the show seemed otherwise uninterested in), it didn't make any sense by the second time you saw them go through the door. Also, starting around episode 4, I really struggled to follow the story moment to moment.

I agree with a fair amount of your points (especially Zemo’s coat and the metal arm fail safe, nothing happened with that!)- loved episode 1 and then it began to unravel but I loved them and their dynamic fixing Sam’s boat as well as the finale - I thought Sam’s speech was excellent and Anthony actually got to help write that so it felt natural to him. I think they tried to do much in the middle - to the point where it may have been better as a stand-alone film? I thought the reason Zemo was more sassy was that he felt he had done his revenge arc (causing cap and Tony to fall out) and he was doing the time - still not a fan of super soldiers clearly but he was more focused on properly saying goodbye to Sokovia - hence going to the memorial and going quietly with the wakandans. And I agree I didn’t find Karli a charismatic leader of a worldwide organisation - Just my thoughts though! Good vid as always

SO I watched FATWS dubbed (bc family doesn't speak English) and I didn't notice the first draft-y dialogue, but when you pointed out Karli's line abt the shield I had your same reaction! it really feels like a placeholder and I think it makes her lose authenticity.
About the cinematography/editing, some shots felt weirdly off to me? For example in ep 4 (I think), when Battlestar is freeing himself from the chair, there's this focus on some water dripping on the floor - as if it was plot point of sorts - that really bothered me while watching. Maybe it really was a plot point they had to cut out? Maybe they just liked it??? idk
In conclusion, I agree with p much everything you said, and it really needed more episodes (as originally planned) in order to handle all these storylines and characters they threw in.
    thank you dan! ✨

I really agree with what you said about the writing feeling "first draft", because I found that a lot of the banter between Sam and Bucky came off as really...forced? Maybe it's just because I've spent a lot of time watching Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan during MCU press junkets and I know how funny they are and they kind of natural chemistry they have when they're just themselves, and I think I was expecting more of that to come through in the show (but people trying to write funny lines for them just never felt natural)

I deffo didn’t get on the hype tbh, especially compared to Wandavision when I would watch it as soon as I woke up out of excitement (and not wanting to see spoilers). I would watch TFAWS whenever I could be bothered too and that was often 1-3 eps at once as I was so many weeks behind.
They are very different types of shows. But I was still expecting a “Agatha All Along” moment which for me never came anywhere close in this series. The scenes of Sam as Cap were cool but maybe I was just expecting more mystery or even some sort of connection to the future MCU films, like how Wandavision sets up the next Strange and Captain Marvel films. Rant over lol.

I would've given it at least 10-12 episodes, which would have given them time to flesh out more of the storylines, and maybe include extra story for Isaiah, Sharon, Karli, etc.

I’m somewhere in between. Game of Thrones was spectacular with 10 episodes (and in fact, it’s two series with fewer were where it climbed aboard the Strugglebus.)
Whereas I do recall a lot of shows, even those I loved (Lost, Housewives) feeling at times bloated with 24.
Either way, acknowledging extraneous circumstances that made production tricky, 6 episodes wasn’t QUITE enough for me!

@@DanLayton I suppose it can depend on the show, like GoT (until they rushed through the last season), but I think a longer timeframe allows for more story, yes you run the risk of 'filler', but I'll take filler over not having the whole picture, and feeling like I could blink and miss half the series.
Maybe about 12 episodes for a series like this would've been the sweet spot. I know I wanted a little more from WandaVision too (as much as I also loved that), and I'm really hoping that Loki is given the time it deserves.

Winter Soldier coming following the enormousness of WandaVision was always going to be to it's detriment. I also felt that it airing episodically was to it's detriment since it was infact one 6 hour long story. I agree that certain plot point start but never seem to be resolved. Also, in the end the show didn't matter. If you never saw it and picked up with the characters in the next movie Sam would be Captain America just liked we thought he was going to be after Endgame. Walker definitely wasn’t redeemed. Yes he got the special agent whatever it was title, but that’s not because he was redeemed. He made 1 correct choice amid a host of mistakes and genuine crimes and overall bad behavior. But it fits within the themes of the show. One thing they consistently show is the racism that takes place in the world today, still. So it’s the idea that Isaiah was experimented on and then put in jail, but a white man -who also took the serum- just gets rewarded after making one slightly decent decision. He didn’t get redeemed, the scene is not meant to make us feel good or like that part of the story is wrapped up. I feel it has a sense of foreboding in a way.

Yep. As you say. All as you say. Shame. It takes as much work and as many workers to make a meh series as a great one. But, as they say, "If it ain't on the page, it ain't on the screen."
It was almost comical how Bucky's journey went from... "I need to deal with what I've done" in ep. 1. leaping directly to "Tick, DONE in ep. 6.
Superheroing while Black was the best theme, best realized, but still left me wanting (as you did), much more on Isaiah.
Parallels to IRL made me see through their fiction.
As an audience, we have no experience with what happens when a witch mind-controls an entire town.... no experience with what happens when you levitate a major city and drop it to earth... So, go on, writers, tell it any way you want. We can't argue with you. But in the case of two FATWS plot points, we all have lived through clear parallels-within the past year. The Jan 6 assault on the US Capitol to thwart a political process? We know how that plays. And we know the aftermath. A cop killing an unarmed suspect in cold blood - filmed by bystanders and, I presume, going viral on social media - and all that happens is that he's put on administrative leave with no other consequences? We know how that plays out too. So your silly TV story was exactly that: a silly TV story.

Don't worry Dan we all like you so we all like films. You in a film would be better for everyone though but still we'll take what we have. Can't wait till you're a million years and forget us on your journey shaking hands with the greats such as Johnny Depp.

Totally agree. This show could have been really good if the season was longer. To get to episode 5 and know there's only 1 episode left... nah, I knew it wasn't going to deliver on a 5 star rating from me. It's too bad though. It could have been a genius series of television if given more time to follow through on all the interesting plots.

I still don't fully know what happened lmao cause I haven't had a chance to rewatch but Jesus I was annoyed

The sentiment of setting up so many storylines and not following through on them is where I felt like this show was let down. I loved watching it, and was intrigued the entire way, its only looking back that I realised how not good it was.
They had the potential for Isaiah and the racism to go much further; to explore Bucky's relationship with PTSD and trauma, as well as a potential disability storyline as someone who relies so heavily on a limb that he found could easily be removed from him. The story was so desperate for us to see Karli as a villain, even though her morals and motivations were good, it felt like they threw in her exploding things and killing people to make us hate her for no good reason.
Not even getting onto the tiger dating profiles as a reference to bi bucky, Spellman saying, keep watching when asked about potential bi bucky, for their to be absolutely no follow through which was the biggest bait

Imo, TFATWS is the marvel’s version of the justice league. It needed either more time to actually finish storylines, or cut the stories out. It just made all the characters who were introduced very flat in personality

I agree, I had an okay time but I was left wanting more. I love Bucky and the complexity of joining the world again, without his compass (Steve). I loved Zemo as a character, I think we saw glimpses of who he was but it was much "softer" in this version. Sam grew on me and I completely agree. Its Cap VS Cap, the Flag Smashers did very little for me as people and as a believable organization. John Walker is a good solider, Sam is a good man. Which perfectly mirrors Steve's ethos.
Things felt rushed, which was disappointing because the idea of the story lines were there! They just weren't given enough time so they didn't land.
And we should have ended with Captain America and the White Wolf! Why shows Sam's evolution and not Bucky's?

    Show. Dont. Tell.
The exposition is constant and we are told how people are feeling without actually seeing it and what made them feel that way. And even at that, if you want the show to be so reliant on dialogue, please please please make the dialogue actually good and not so cliche and predictable.

I wish they didn't give John Walker a redemption arc, at all. There was no need for it story wise- the man just killed someone in cold blood with a shield that is meant to represent something entirely different. There were aspects of the show I so enjoyed, and those were the ones I almost didn't think Disney and Marvel were going to touch- the racial tensions in the US, the portrayal and reality of what the stars and stripes actually symbol, etc. But by giving John Walker that redemption (no matter what they are going to do with his character in the future) does feel like it undermines all the time spent on demonstrating how America has to face the reality of what it actually symbolises around the world.
So much potential, and I still ultimately enjoyed it, but wish it could have been more. It was so strange to feel that this show actually didn't have enough time to flesh out it's plot, when that is usually the exact opposite problem most shows have these days.

    • @DanLayton

Yeah, I very very much agree. There was just zero accountability to the point where i was like "...did that happen??" And in turn it kind of undermined what happened with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss's character. She suddenly feels like less of a power player because she's not funding an underground bad guy, he's been let off pretty much without a slap on the wrist.

Karli and the Flag Smashers fall victim to the MCU's 'relatable villain' trope of having extremely valid points up until murdering innocents to make sure you know you're not supposed to support them. Karli was honestly a really disappointing leader of a global faction of radicalized refugees, and not because she was a young woman that might have been turned by Sam given enough time, but because, as far as we saw on camera, she had the charisma of a slice of deli ham pulled over an uncomfortable frog. As you said, her dialogue wasn't very good, but her presence amongst her warriors AND in front of the mourners at the funeral was just....blah? She was far more dynamic arguing with Sam than she was leading her actual people, and that simply doesn't work.

Karli was my favorite character. I really loved the flag smashers however I dont think they necessarily belonged in this show. I really think the exploration of race in america and sams internal struggle with that was so important. (Also, I just want to point out black people being tested on arent just things that happened in the history of the world, it happened in america quite often. The Tuskegee airmen and Henrietta Lacks to name a few instances.) As a white american the Captian America character was one i struggled with a lot in terms of the horrific things america did and continues to do to the world and its citizens. And also a white, cis, possibly het, male, soldier never really felt right as a representation of america and American superheros. I thought they could have explored that more. I think that the whole show couldve and maybe shouldve been just about race and the new captian america and left the flag smashers and the power broker for a whole different show/movie.
