Spent 5 years auditioning for drama school until I got in. The best advice I can give is you for applying is you cannot put all your eggs in one basket, you have to be open to the idea that all conservatoire level schools can essentially (on paper, and VERY much on paper) offer the same experience and you’ll still end up with the showcase, as all other schools do. Schools more often than not won’t let people in on how much research they’ve done on the course but whether said person is suited to there take on training if they can see themselves working with you and if you have the drive and want to train as an actor (and of course, whether they can at least ‘act’, which is super duper subjective as we know). My time at drama school has been very mixed (part due to covid, part due to the school closing down halfway through my training and part due to understaffing and underfunding, which is a sector wide issue) but I can absolutely say you’ll meet the best people and you will get to do what you love everyday but you will only get out of it what you give to it so you gotta be ready to dive headfirst; you’ve gotta want it! A lot of drama schools are in transition atm as well, due to revelations about certain practices and behaviours in the past that have been brought to light by empowered students in recent years, so I’d be sceptical of people saying places have gone downhill, I think slowly but surely they are starting to change for the better.
I would love to see a video about choosing where to do your masters!! I just graduated last year from a Bachelor level acting programme and I love to hear about peoples experiences in acting/performing arts education
This has nothing to do with anything but your aesthetic is on POINT in this video, with the hair and the nails and the jumper that brings out your eyes. 10/10 for muted cool colors on you 👌 (Also I couldn't stop laughing at the ending.)
Finally someone else who loves summer!! I get judged so hard when I say I like summer. Like I don’t need it to be a heatwave constantly but please! Heat! Summer! Give it to me!
Can highly recommend Bristol Old Vic for acting, lots of people I know enjoyed it. I also heard good things about the Royal Welsh, but I think you'd fit in well at Bristol.
Bristol is a straight Acting course, RWCMD has Musical Theatre, so the choice there would depend on what discipline I pursue and also whether I’m strong enough vocally for musicals, I guess! I’m looking forward to exploring the options
PLEASE make a vid about your plans for acting/school. I tried pushing my way into acting by myself for a while and goddamn it’s hard. I’ve just started a part-time performing arts school but I still don’t know what I’m doing with my life tbh
9:49 - Last of Us spoilers over 😊 Also, Dan, why not talk to Carrie (Hope Fletcher) & see if she can hook you up with her agency or something? At least get you seen/decent auditions for the right folk etc...?
As a mountview student I would really recommend it as a school, I did the foundation and currently in 3rd year on the MT course and I’ve had the best time and the training is really well structured ! (In my opinion at least) it’s also all rooted in acting training, even the dance training, i feel it has produced a well rounded, creative thinking actor and creative of me 🤠 happy to answer any questions you have on the inner workings! (It also took me 3 years to get in so I’ve done a fair few auditions if I can be any help I’m happy to oblige haha)
Yes! 100% yes! While messing around with a mohawk I accidentally grew a mullet without realising it and NOBODY TOLD ME!!! Everyone was like "we all thought that was what you were looking for" and a little piece of me died :-(
THANK YOU! I also cannot stand mullets! Or the shaggy, every clump of hair is a different length which makes it impossible to grow out haircuts that are also in right now. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts and your process of applying for drama programs if/when the time comes. I applied to theater programs for undergrad and didn't get in anywhere, which was heartbreaking but maybe also a good thing because I think I would have burnt out really fast and had a hard time socially, which I ended up doing anyway when I went to college not doing performing arts. Hopefully you'll have a much better experience, especially since you'd be doing a masters program instead of undergraduate.
Hey dan! I Completed my musical theatre degree at Urdang in 2020, and when I went i was slightly older than everyone else and also felt a bit ‘late to the party’. would love a video on why you’re thinking of which colleges to go to - maybe also consider a masters at GSA?
brilliant video as always!! as someone who recently moved from London to upstate NY for uni, i would absolutely recommend living in america!! also, my mum takes the tube to work and does the green park change twice a week, so i sent that fact to her and she was thrilled!!!
I’ve been to drama school and studied acting but the dream is really musical theatre. So here I am at 31, seeing a vocal coach and taking ballet so that I can also retrain at MA courses in 2024 doing MT. I think based on your ranking you’ve got to decide what one it is that you want more, film and TV or MT?
for the masters thing: you can get some really cheap professionals who in 3 sessions will get you to learn so many things not just about your career path but about your ideal lifestyle and work pace overall which helps you to uncover your own ideal healthy cycles. it really helped me with advancing my career, my ambitions and my work/life/mental health balance as an artist. really helpful for abstract thinkers
Is it wrong to be slightly surprised that Dan is in a relationship with a woman? In like the most 100% respectful way, I seriously wish them both all the happiness etc etc, I just, yknow, didn't think women were really his thing, if you get what I mean.
hey!! pro-tip on looking at masters from someone whos currently doing her masters in screen acting!! im not sure what its like at conservatoires for masters but at my uni it is nothing like i expected, our contact time is 2 days a week and i feel like i learnt more about technique and skill in one semester of my undergrad than so far this academic year 🙃 on the iother hand if youre looking to improve your own reflective skills and research ability then its great! the topics ive researched in modules so far i have a genuine care for which is fun, but feels futile since i dont want to go further and do a phd, what im basically saying is try and know EVERYTHING about the course or as much as you can, and make sure that its what you really want to do :)
only since you asked: I watch this channel for your personality and slightly unhinged sense of humor, and not for your content. I'd be thrilled to see a video on what schooling you want. Speaking as an American computer science major with lots of friends in college, I think that the people who really, really try to get into a specific school are usually the ones that are unhappy. People who let the admissions process inform their decisions are usually a little happier, since if the "target audience" for the school matches up with your personality, you're more likely to make friends, find career connections, have interests that align with recruiters for that school, etc.
i asked the joel question! i did mean a combination of both the rescue and the lie, honestly just wanted to hear you talk about it bc i love to hear your opinions on stuff and also i cannot get enough of listening to people's takes on this show 😭
(also yeh i agree the rescue itself is v understandable but the final lie was a mistaaaake bc she KNEW he was bullshitting and was giving him an opportunity to come clean. and he didn't, and now their relationship is tainted with this lie. i reckon if he had told her the truth then and there, she probably would've had to make her peace with it since they'd already travelled back to wyoming, so she couldn't exactly go back to salt lake city by herself. ah i bloody love this story man)
The thing is as well though…she’s lied to him through the series! She took that gun from Bill and Frank’s, she’s put herself in dangers way again and again. And yet they’re at this point in the relationship now where the lie has put a wedge there. The pathos of it all, I can’t even.
@@DanLayton oh FULLY. They have such a complex relationship and it's made my heart hurt for 10 years now lmao 🙃 I'm excited to see what you think of the game and how it differs to the show
Autistic tube nerd that’s been to every station here. Favourite station is Uxbridge or Canary Wharf Least favourite is Bank. Couple of fun facts: Angel has the longest escalator, and the Northern Line at Embankment has a unique *bong* MIND. THE GAP announcement.
I love BOTH of these facts - I went specifically to Angel on a day trip to London in 2007 purely to ride that escalator! And the Embankment announcement story warms my heart. I would LOVE to complete the tube map one day…
Seeing you still wanting to pursue theatre at your age is actually super reassuring that I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm 24 and only just started a drama degree at Uni, and I spent the first few weeks wondering if I've wasted time, and also if drama is the right degree for musical theatre. Seeing someone older than me not giving up yet makes me feel much better.
When I’m feeling confident about it, I actually see my age as an asset. It’s an advantage the younger colleagues wouldn’t have. I’ve lived a bit more. I’ve experienced more of life. To pull a Sondheim, “I know things now, many valuable things.”
@@DanLayton Thanks for the advice! In the same vein, I try and remind myself that I haven't just done nothing in between highschool and university, and that the experience I've gained from the shows I've done in that 7 year period is invaluable, and my extensive resume I have gained will be to my benefit.
I'm like, 90% sure that most people who are really into autumn over all other seasons have never lived above 50 degrees north. The a e s t h e t i c is irrelevant if there's only 5 hours of actual daylight to appreciate it in by october lmao
Canary Wharf is officially sci-fi now thanks to Star Wars! For a follow up question (if you ever do another vid like this) is what language would you pick if you were to start learning a language again?
It's a little different, but, on your comments about fandom sometimes being seen as more important as the work itself, I find a very similar dynamic within the Formula 1 community online. There were a couple of big instances on F1 twitter where there was a huge amount of backlash to teams dropping a couple of drivers from their fandoms, despite the fact that it would be impossible to argue they didn't underperform last year. It feels like they care more about being fans of a given driver than actually having an interest in the craft and the quality of the sport. I think it's very similar to the dynamic you're describing with fandoms in media.
I’m absolutely seeing it more in sport lately too!! The sheer number of people who appear to be “Ronaldo fans” as opposed to Manchester United fans was a wild experience the past few years
FYI with degree choices - you're always going to hear about the bad experiences. I'm not in the drama/acting field and I don't even live in your country, but I AM in the psychology field and what I can say with high confidence is that reviews from others always need to be taken with a grain of salt. People rarely express their opinion when they have a good or neutral experience, and if they do, it's brief. But when someone has a bad experience? They'll tell anyone who will listen. People rarely make the effort to comment until they have a complaint, and then they want the world to know because they need a place to vent their anger and guilt trip or take down the establishment in question. The people with the negative experiences are far more vocal with their thoughts than the people with good or neutral experiences, because it's natural to want to vent our negative emotions, so not only are we more likely to hear from those who had a bad time, but we'll also get a more detailed account of their experience than we would with someone who had little to complain about. Whilst we must always take the complaints on board, no course is going to be well liked by everyone who takes it, because people have different learning styles, schedules, likes and dislikes, and at the end of the day, some people are just not cut out for the education structure and are mad when they're asked to adhere to it. Pick the course YOU want based on what YOU like and what THEY offer, and consider other people's input but don't let it be a dealbreaker. Worst that can happen is you don't like it.
Also, as someone currently studying at drama school - would love to chat to you about it but doubt i could fit all my thoughts/feelings into one comment 😭
You didn’t ask but should you ever decide to make a whole video and expand on your thoughts about the entire season of the last of us I wouldn’t be upset 👀
"...yeah, it's still going great, but like imagine if this was how SHE found out that it wasn't" Uh. I have made a huge error, a critical lapse of judgement. Man what a clown I am.
I am dreading season 2 of the Last of Us knowing how the second game plays out. I think part of Joel not telling Ellie the truth is less to do with hoping she understands why he did it, and more the fear that one day she will decide to go back and willingly sacrifice herself in hopes of a cure, this time with her knowing what her fate will be, and he can’t let that happen even if it is her choice this time. So he’d be living in fear that she was gonna run away/leave to sacrifice herself, for the rest of their life together. I think that’s a larger part of why he lied
Not that it matters because we adore your content and will continue to do so. You stated that you kept trinkets from previous relationships in the hopes of reuniting with "HER" when discussing retaining trinkets from previous relationships. Again, no significance; we thought you were gay, Isn't that correct? Please don't assume I'm being more impolite than I am by asking a personal question. I'm just truly interested. I'm from the United States, and Americans mistakenly believe that many British mannerisms are flashy when they are not. We mistakenly believe James Corden is gay, but he is not. Not that one's sexuality is important, nor is it any of my concern.
"I would love to move to America." Dont. Visit here. Have an extended vacation here. Travel it! But moving and living in America just isnt it, says this American. Roadtrips and bus trips or staying in one place for a few weeks before movingnon to the next are the experiences Ive heard people speak best of. The issue is finding work/making money so its something youneither save up for and make money along the way as you can or you figure out a work from the road situation.
I think the arguably wrong thing that Joel did was massacre an entire hospital full of people trying to make a cure plus Ellie's step mother in a way. But I agree with you, I fully understand why joel did it, which is the point I think, to make you feel kinda mess up for understanding and sympathizing with a mass murderer
Marlene left Ellie at FEDRA, so “step-mother” is incredibly generous. And they also didn’t tell Ellie what they were doing so they robbed her of consent - if they were so sure she’d have agreed to it, why didn’t they ask her? There’s something so MONSTROUS about that to me. It’s interesting to me that I’m so like “eh whatever” about the brutality of the spree through the hospital. Possibly it was down to just the convention of the game and the series. And also I thought “Yeah, I mean, if this was FEDRA I reckon people wouldn’t care.” Which is a thing I’ve really liked about the show - neither the Fireflies nor FEDRA are good here. The world is so messed up that it makes the “cure” argument almost seem pointless. Such an interesting piece of writing.

"...yeah, it's still going great, but like imagine if this was how SHE found out that it wasn't"
Uh.
How long have you been using an Amazon echo as a drinking cup? 😂
Being anti-mullet with (what i assume) is an audience with a fair amount of queers is a BOLD move Daniel.
Being queer inherently demands better taste than a mullet, I’m here to guide everyone to the light
@@DanLayton As a mullet having queer myself, this is the best i’ve ever looked, so i simply cannot back this.
I thought your cup was a speaker and was highly disturbed when you lifted it to your mouth.
Treacle I would say
You should go
