Quick update: 1) I'm slightly bothered that my description of Little Acting doesn't do it justice - we'll have to come back to that topic in future. 2) LITERALLY while I was on a walk but HALF AN HOUR before making this video live, I found a yellow courgette outside a greengrocers that was down a street I don't normally take. Fuming.
I had a moment of appreciating Little Acting while watching an episode of Poirot today. Just the way David Suchet walks down a small set of stairs is so perfectly Poirot. Please discuss this topic more! Would love to hear your thoughts!
i was not expecting the animated french rat movie to be such a major catalyst in the Daniel J. Layton origin story and i was also not expecting to get actual chills listening to an analysis of said animated french rat movie but alas, here we are
Can we all just take a minute. Because one day this guy we are watching is gonna make it big in some shape or form and he will no longer be Dan who we watch to make us feel better and Dan who feels like he's talking to a group and an individual at the same time. He's gonna be Dan the film guy, or Dan the voice actor. We must all take a minute and appreciate that this dude, who presently doesn't feel the best, is giving us heart warming, funny, lovely content because he can. Anyone can cook but only some have the ability to make others smile for no reason other than they can. Dan is one of the few, so we should all appreciate him. Okay that's the end of my Dan is lovely and we should appreciate him rant... Enjoy your day x
Didn't expect to cry when I clicked on this video. Before Covid, my friends and I would meet up every other week, make progressively more ambitious foods (the foamy lemon meringue pie, and greasy donuts were probably the worst) and then go the cinema and watch a film. This series takes me back to that every time and makes me miss it even more. Thank you! This entire series has been extremely comforting and I've enjoyed every video very much
Watching your videos is like writing a book, with a hot cup of tea, surrounded by plants as you listen to the rain outside. A steady calm momentum that makes you quietly happy. Thank you for creating, what feels like a warm hug of a video.
Ratatouille is also my favorite Pixar film, and I love that it started you on your cooking journey! I think WALL-E (my other favorite) perfectly proves your point about a character not needing to talk in order to emote and connect with the audience. The depth, artistry, and emotional heart behind that movie is unreal.
Remy’s backstory about “my entire family doesn’t understand me and thus I must unapologetically pursue my identity and they can either love me or reject me” resonated so much to me because of its similarity to the queer experience. I could not imagine this film without it. in conclusion remy is a gay coded queer icon thank you for coming to my ted talk
I find this entire series (and many other things that Dan makes) so incredibly comforting and I think it has something to do with food. Food is something that has and always will connect everyone regardless of culture and history. The fact that Dan can talk about food in the UK, and I can understand exactly what he’s saying in Australia despite the fact that we have so many differences, speaks volumes to the power of food in connection.
I think with the animation quality, I think a big part of what makes it look so incredible and unique is the lighting. I can't think of another Pixar film that's lit in the way Ratatouille is. It adds so much to the atmosphere, and it just makes the whole thing look amazing.
That synaesthesia moment for me was one that made me realise how much you can - and should - communicate without words in film. It gets across the concept so well that I'd struggle to put into words
I don’t understand how your friends don’t just sit on your sofa and listen to you talk about cooking all day every day. So passionate and well articulated and I will probably watch this a million times.
I work as a teacher with children with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Needs and your chat at the end about anything (or anyone) becoming anything has really resonated. A lot of people would give up on the children I work with because they display challenging behaviours or are violent or struggle to communicate but really with a bit of opportunity and open minds they really can be anything! :)
don't mind me, i'm just going to listen to the last 3 minutes at least another 4 times. your videos truly have everything: laughs, food and feels. i love.
I absolutely love your sense of humor, but watching yo get very earnest and sincere at the end was just lovely. I disagree that having Rémy just mime the whole time would’ve been better. Disney has proven dozens of times through their shorts that you don’t need dialogue to convey emotion or personality, but I think having Rémy speak shows how educated he is about cooking, instead of just implying he has natural skill or whatever. And the family storyline provides tension. If Rémy is to be the protagonist, you need to know your protagonist, and there’s only so much you can show.
this series is delightful, and i'm so excited to see what you make in the future. i think it would be really interesting for you to make something from a ghibli film and talk about how ghibli is well, ghibli. how it romanticises the everyday bits of life, the difference in its approach to animation, or something idk
You praise the monologue at the end of Ratatouille, but you describing why Ratatouille is such a beautiful movie has the same vibes as that monologue ❤️
As someone that also used to live in Crouch End I very much appreciated the weird vegetable selection shout out (my personal favourite was finding a stripy bell pepper)
100% agree with the criticism of the narration/Remy speaking. I recently watched Spirit for the first time since childhood and god that narration grates - they've animated possibly the most expressive pair eyebrows cinema has ever seen onto that horse... and yet we still needed Matt Damon to tell us what Spirit's thinking? Credit where credit is due though, Pixar released Wall-E the year after Ratatouille, which I think well made up for the crime of having Remy not be a silent character.
Whenever my partner's cooking, he'll use the same method as Remi to figure out if anything is missing from the dish. It's because he saw Ratatouille and was like. If Remi can use sense of smell to figure out what's wrong, I can do it too!
Jeezus. You talented kind hearted bastard. making me feel emotional over our shared passion. Food. This video is seasoned and topped with the most delicious of passion I've ever seen. Can't wait to see what you do next man. Sending loves from Turkey~
This was so fun to watch as a professional animator, haha. I've worked on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon shows and it's REALLY VALIDATING to hear that someone who isn't an animator notices our acting choices, it's actually a super huge part of the animation process! We need to learn how characters act; their ticks, their reactions, their subtle expression changes, etc, just as actors do!
Ad Dan has a gorgeous sweater, green like those sponsor dollars😉 Rake them in! Ratatouille is one of my absolute favorites too. And yes, the score. So, so beautiful. It perfectly ties the visualization and theme of the film.
i'm so glad you included ratatouille in this series bc 1) this series has quickly become one of my favourites and 2) ratatouille is one of my ultimate comfort films. thank you dan for making my evening better :)
The way you spoke about Ratatouille was amazing. You're so passionate about it and it shows how much you love talking about film. Easily your best Take A Bite to date.
OKay but are we going to talk about that scene with Remy and his dad when there arguing in the rain? oscar worthy !! ratatouille is my absolute favorite movie thank you for making this vid :')
I absolutely adore all of the earnestness going on here - it's at the heart of the film, and you've woven it into this video. Cynicism is fun and all, but so is enthusiasm.
I don’t know why this video is so very very soothing to me. I’ve never seen Ratatouille nor do I know what the culinary dish is (well, I do /now/) but it’s just nice to see a familiar face talking about something he loves. That’s in such low stock for me lately, it’s very welcome. Thanks Dan.
I loved... everything? About this video? Yeah. From the chat about the film to Dan passing it off to different Dans to the narration over the majority of the cooking, everything was so cozy and delightful and everything I love cooking videos to be. The Take a Bite series really is my ideal youtube stuff- it's the intersection of food and film that I get from Binging with Babish, but with even more film talk, plus the delightful Daniel J brand of humor. The narration as you cooked achieved exactly what you were going for, by the way! Felt very reminiscent of Rosianna's backburner vids, my absolute favorites. Thank you for this little gift of a video
As a video editor who is also a foodie, I love the film Ratatouille for very similar reasons that you explained in this video. Love this series! Comedy: on point. Commentary: on point.
Honestly, this was a one of the best videos you’ve ever uploaded. (I know you’ve uploaded a lot and I’m not firing shots 😂) The passion for such a great Pixar film and the articulate delivery of your POV. 👍🏻
Your eloquency is always something I find so comforting, the mix of snide jokes and that utter passion for what you love is something I will always love to come back to
DANIEL J LAYTON I CAME IN HERE FOR A NICE TIME WITH ONE OF MY FAVORITE CREATORS TALKING ABOUT RATS AND COURGETTES BUT DAMN IT NOW IVE LEFT HERE DEEPLY MOVED, CRYING, AND KNOWING ILL BE COMING BACK TO THIS VIDEO FOR YEARS TO COME. GOOD DAY SIR.
I need to watch this film. When teaching the structure of a kitchen (head chef, sous chef etc) all the kids ...teenagers I must add...go “like ratatouille miss?!” So this is the final push I needed to watch it - thankssss
I watched Ratatouille again recently and since then I have had the soundtrack on loop in order to make an almost 'safe space' on the bus into work... And now Dan puts what I've been feeling recently about this film and why I love it perfectly into words? I'm not crying, I swear! Now excuse me while I go listen to this soundtrack again as I too, attempt to become a great artist. They can come from anywhere you know ;)
"You must be imaginative, strong-hearted. You must try things that may not work. And you must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul." Words that honest to God changed my life as a child.
This may be my favorite video yet. Is it because I love cooking? Probably. Or because I’m hopeless in love with Paris and, thus, also ratatouille? Also probably. But this is definitely a new comfort video
Ratatouille reliably makes me cry every time I watch it, I love it so much and the core message of the film is so important to me... and now this video has done gone and made me cry too. Damn you, Layton. 😂

this series is definitely one of my favourite youtube series ever. think we share similar passions in both film and cooking, im studying media at uni right now and do a lot of baking etc in my spare time so these videos provide both an inspirational and comforting space, thank you Dan!
For me Remy being able to talk to Rats (whom he doesn’t relate too) and not being able to talk to Linguini and other people (whom he does relate to) is quite a heartbreaking thing. that sequence with the voice over was filmed so professionally damn (also thanku for this - ratatouille is my favourite animated movie and this really managed to explain why in a way that was in itself comforting)

I feel like all of Dan’s videos are so comforting. I just watched this and I immediately want to watch it again.
How dare you end the video without any jokes - I DID NOT WANT TO CRY TODAY
Recently watched WALL-E and THAT movie is a masterpiece in small acting.
