- Which home EV charger have I chosen and why? This video details my experience researching and making a decision on the best home EV charger, for my requirements. It really boiled down to the Zappi or Andersen A2.

At last! I've been looking at this charger for when my M3 LR arrives in March. Great video, it does look really smart.
Thanks Kerry, enjoy your Tesla Model 3!
Looks really neat, I like how you can customise the unit and hide the cable. Definitely going to consider this!
96 colour combinations!
I was spoilt for choice but then went for the dark grey to match the car 🙂
Great video & great charger. I’ve got one on order. The ability to hide the cable was a big factor. I’ve actually gone for the 22Kw version which you can use at circa 7.3Kw on single phase too. In the future, when I get 3 phase, I’ll be able to make the most of it.
Looks really smart- I can see why went for the Andersen.
I've been torn over the Zappi and the Andersen as well so this was really helpful. I am concerned about the app as I noticed it did look basic and it currently hasn't been updated for the past 8 months which doesn't fill me with confidence but you are right, asethetically it's a no-brainer. I currently have the terrible looking Chargemaster unit on my current house and I can't wait to be rid of it!
Thanks for your comment. I agree the app is very basic but functional.
That is a very smart looking charger. Wish our local electric company was as forward thinking as the UK operators, no cheap overnight electricity for us here in AR at the moment :/.
Olve grant finish in March 2022 and fitted to the wall to qualify.
Really helpful video - thank you, looking to switch to Octopus so with use your code. Do you know if Junction Electric cover outside Northamptonshire eg Derby?
Thanks Bryan. I believe they are doing a job in Nottingham soon, have a chat with them and see what they can do 👍
you made the right choice
Hey Tom, great videos.
I’m picking up a Model 3 Lr on Saturday from Bham - a tad nervous with previous wiling issues.
In terms of the charger does the government still give the grant for Tesla’s?
Congratulations on your new car! My understanding is that the OLEV EV charger installation grant is still available to everyone, it's only the actual car grant that no longer includes Tesla. Have a chat with an EV charger electrician, they will know all the details.
Great video. I have orders Zappi didn’t even see Anderson before this video ever. Does it unlocks charge port or you have to do it through the app ? Especially interested when the charge is complete.
Hi Roman, only the official Tesla charger will open the charge port with the button. It is a little annoying that you have to unlock the door to unlock the charge port but usually if you're plugging in, you're getting out of the car anyway so it's ready to unlock. Once completed, you do need to unlock the charge port from the app, same on the Zappi though unfortunately.
@@WhatTheTesla yup that’s a pity. But maybe using Siri will help out :)
Great video! I'm thinking A2 as well. Did you get a feel for what the average install cost is for the electrician? Obvs all jobs vary, but ball park would be great...
Hi Joseph, it was ballpark £400 for the install. Like you said jobs vary and I was quite particular about cable management... A2 is great although the app is down today for the first time.
@@WhatTheTesla Thanks! Was there a reason why you didn't get it installed directly via Andersen?
Yep, when I spoke to their local installer I wasn't confident on their solution for cable management. Was really just personal preference, I got a better level of service from local Jack in my opinion.
Why didn't you go for the Tesla charger?
My wife would have the Anderson because it doesn't look like a charger, I would go for the Zappi Untethered for the better app.
Hi, what is the required depth to lay down the armoured cable? You mentioned about building control regulation in the video.
I think it's a little vague when the electrician was describing the regs. It didn't say a specific depth from memory. Best to double check with an electrician as of its vague it will also be subjective.
I dunno why, but I always thought our 3 pin was only 4mph charging, 8mph would suit me fine during the week as I work less than 6 miles from home. My feelings with the Octopus tariff is that few people take into account the standing charge. So even an energy company on a flat rate of maybe 16p/kwh but with a standing charge of under 10p might work out cheaper for someone doing less than average miles per month. How much did solar cost?
Great points. I think it will depend on the car and your home electrics. I was getting 7-8mph on 3 pin but with octopus (or similar) you can really make the most of that 5p rate with a quicker charge during those off peak hours.
The standing charge of 25p is a little steep admittedly but if you can use 7kWh for 4 hours at 5p (just for the car) that would cost £1.40 vs £3.36 on the cheapest alternative rate fixed at 12p which dwarfs the 25p in comparison. Everyone has different circumstances though...
Solar panels actually came with my house, it's a new build but really poorly implemented. 2 panels facing east over 2 years has only generated 600kWh.
This charger seems to be more style over substance....app is basic, buggy with it missing scheduling and the lack of updates doesn't inspire confidence that this will be supported for years to come. No dedicated customer support forum neither.
Personally I'd want to go with something more established that has a history of regular updates and a large user base (like the Zappi). I get that it's nice to have the cable tidy away, but even that seems to be a little bit of a faff if you're in a hurry.
Always been a firm advocate of function first, style second.
Hi Blower. I agree with your comment about the app being basic, however it does have scheduling - I use it most days.
An update every once in a while would be nice but it does do everything I need.
Each to their own and like you said if its function you're after the Zappi is the better option.
Very nice video
So was Tesla charger at home no good? All videos I saw so far were with people instaling Tesla home chargers.
Hi Tom, Tesla home charger in the UK doesn't qualify for the £350 government OLEV grant as it's not 'smart enough' apparently. Also with my requirements I wanted to hide the cable when not in use, plus solar integration and we can't get Tesla solar or powerwall here yet. The selling point for the Tesla charger is that it's inexpensive and has a button on the plug to open the charge port which I do really miss on the Andersen! Hope that helps.
@@WhatTheTesla Thanks for that, now I understand. Great research on your part, especially with that grant!
Thanks Tom!
Why do you need the Smart Meter to be installed please? Apologies if its in the video
Hi G4, you need a smart meter to provide 30 min readings to Octopus so they can give you the 4 hour overnight rate of 5p per kWh between 12:30-4:30am.
I'm in the same situation with a SMETS1 smart meter, did they upgrade you to a SMETS2?
They tried but the contractor went to the wrong address... Having the SMETS2 installed next week, hopefully!
nice to know as im look at a plug in hybrid Golf GTE
Nice choice! Do hybrid cars qualify for the OLEV grant too?
@@WhatTheTesla yes
Hi, does this charge all electric cars? Does it have different adaptors for diff cars?
Hi Joe, I believe all electric vehicles in the UK use the standard "Type 2" connector, it's only older vehicles which use a different connection. Hope that helps.
Top work. Good vid
Thanks R Yates!
Whilst a bit slow Octopus are great to deal with once set up. Our 5 hours cheap rate starts at 8.30 pm when everything goes on! Great video but I’d like to see you enjoying the car!
Thanks Rick. Do you know the name of your tariff that has 5 hours from 8.30pm?
More about the car soon 👍
@@WhatTheTesla I do. It’s Octopus Go Faster
25 p / day and 13.5 apart from 5 hours after 8.30 at 5.5 pence. Used to be 5 p but I gained an extra hour . I like Octopus do bare with them. Use my code if you want👍🏻
Thanks Rick, seems like that one isn't available in my area. I already signed up 6 weeks ago but thanks for the offer.
@@WhatTheTesla just set your timers. Owning a Tesla is a daily joy🤲🏻
We really should all buy British made ev points. (Zappi, Rolec, Sync EV, Ohme)
As patriotic as I am, it's a nice idea but unfortunately they are miles behind on aesthetics and cable management.
Jack's coming to see me this Thursday 22 July. Hope its my birthday.
Great! Which charger have you gone for?
@@WhatTheTesla Sorry your video was about the Andersen A2 wasnt it? Anywaysup I wanted a charger that hid the cable when not in use so the choice is limited. All we need to do now is agree the colour. And SORRY didnt even test drive the model3 as I felt i needed buttons to press so I have an iPace (and OctopusGO)
Yeah video was about the A2 but Junction Electric install lots of different ones so wasn't sure if you'd chosen differently. The A2 is still the best looking and has the best cable management. Choosing which colour(s) is the hardest part! 😄
P.S. I do also really like the iPace... Don't tell the Tesla people...
@@WhatTheTesla The iPace is very, very, fantastic. (You cant say that in proper English but I already have!). Jack came to visit ON TIME, which is unusual for a building tradesman and nice to see, but since he came, where I had decided to go for the Andersen A2, I have since changed my mind and am looking for a Sync EV. untethered Jack is not a Sync Approved Installer so quoted me for an EO Mini Pro 2 which also has to have a PEN field unit fitted whereas the Sync has one build in and also is capable of using a SIM card in case your WiFi is weak or non-existent. So I am trying to persuade Jack to get Sync approved.
Great video
good video
love video
Noice
Not really sure why you went through all that extra work to hide 2m of cable when there’s already loads of utilities on the front 😂
