My grandfather is a traditional martial arts practitioner mainly Hung Ga and Taijiquan despite he teach me more in Hung Ga, some of the moves you did was similar to Taijiquan he taught only yours is more deeper But I will share this video to my grandfather and I would be translating it to him
Yeah shadow wrestling looks weird from an outside perspective, but when I started doing it I began to notice a lot more when I do wrestle some one at my gym. You start notice all you options from most positions so it really helps.
Cool, I'll have to start doing it. Always thought one couldn't train wrestling without an opponent, but, if one's not available, glad to know I wouldn't be wasting my time doing it.
@@varanid9 yeah it can be done by yourself, it not the same and all. But there are more benefits to having a partner like resistance and weight. But solo drills let you focus on the technical side of wrestling. My coach usually makes us run those drill before partnering up. Yeah so best of luck to you.
People training need to hear this. Coming from a wrestling combine we were encouraged to do this at home whenever we could. Great video! Keep up the good work!
Not gonna lie: many times when I'm having trouble sleeping at night, I also incorporate some shadow wrestling/grappling but I do it with my eyes closed for full effect for some reason
Such a cool video! It's basically just a grapple-centric video on bunkai! Can't wait to try some of this stuff on my own. Definitely one of my favorite videos you've done ☆
I like the way you understand fundamentals out of traditional martial arts and relate them to MMA. Very knowledgeable about a lot and you seem not to disguard much and even find something useful out of a technique that most dont have the capacity to make it work because there completely slaves to one or two styles and are convinced that those are the only ones that work.
Sometimes I also close my eyes and imagine myself in different positions, then I try to figure out how to escape or the quickest sequence to a submission. If I mess up I go back to the initial position and start again.
I remember I had a belt exam coming up at one point and I was working through my throws from counter grab while grocery shopping and I remember getting a compliment on my dance moves.
Thanks for the video my coach calls it shadow grappling, its only a beginner class that i take so we cover sprawls, breakfalls and get ups plus various bjj flow drills triangle chokes and armbars for submitions Its been realy hard to get some context outside of youtube as my gym is currently shut down so massive help Also i notice you sprawled in a couple different ways, i know you read the comments so wanted to say a video explaining different ways to sprawl would be really interesting to me

This is an absolute MUST..!! Great video..!! Please take NOTE: It's rare to find this many excellent drill techniques demonstrated in one video guys,, this should be in your library..!! I'm a staunch believer in this..!! As a once high level competitive wrestler back in the 80's I still shadow wrestle to this day..!! I also incorporate Judo techniques as well as striking..!! It's a great way to practice new chain wrestling/mma sequences made of individual techniques..!!
This is gold. Its a missing piece of a puzzle I've been trying to work out for awhile. If you put together a digital program of this kind of work, I will buy it
Ramsey this was such an awesome flow video and shadow wrestling persptive. Please make more videos like this for future content. I was very inspired the whole time.
I also want to add that the effects of imagining your movements is backed up by science. Dont remember the paper when I find it I post it here. Another advantage is therefore that you can imagine the 'lethal' attacks like the armband in full length or the neck crank and and and without actually hurting your training partner. Of course this has to be backed up by sparring experience
When I shadowbox I sometimes try to imagine I'm taking my oponent to the ground by using a judo throw. I guess I was shadow wrestling lol. Love this video!
Another great video Ramsey, thank you, this is an exceedingly helpful practice in quarantine. I was wondering if you were planning to make a video on how to practice elbows in sparring safely and techniques? You responded to an earlier comment of mine, just love how you break it down!
Excellent video; with your knowledge, you should do a lot of these. The problem with TMA is not that they aren't effective, but that most of the practitioners have no idea what the applications of their moves actually are. For example, if more Aikido practitioners realized that most of the wrist twists they train were actually intended for an opponent holding a sword, thus making the wrist a fulcrum, they wouldn't be wasting their time trying to make them work in empty hand-to-hand encounters.
@@RamseyDewey I'm gonna try and design a kata from what you made. It would be cool to see that you would create. (I know this was just spitballing on your end. I mean something you sit and plan. Would love to see it)
I did bit of research and found this channel teaches 54 solo grappling bjj drills Jason Scully... I guess it's same thing ...really kool I can see myself getting somewhere faster by practicing those drills.. give thanks to u 😀👍😎
I was really expecting Ramsey to be throwing himself around the ring, levitating upside-down 7' in the air perfect pike position, as if in a suspended suplex hold. This will have to do.
I love it. Thank you very much. Not only for the technique. You put it all together in a context and methodical sense. I aprecciate it. Maybe from time to time you can do one more in this direction to put the pieces together. Greetings from Austria
Hey Ramsey, Stephen A Smith recently said that he doesn't want women competing in the octagon. I remember hearing your explanation to that mindset in a video about why female fights get stopped earlier. Thanks to you, I understood why he thought that way. Thank you Mr. Dewey ✌️
Hey Ramsey, because of covid I haven’t been able to train in 7 months, and my skill has gone down, and I’m starting to drop my hands on the return of punches, and I’m slow and rusty right now, how do I fix this
You could also just do some sparring with friends Or look for people on intagram to spar with Like this Wanna fight are you in cali Would you wanna fight
Hi there coach Ramsey, I love your videos and have been watching you for the longest time. One of my favorite topics of that you go over are the history of martial arts. I read the book The Art of Killing about the much cooler true facts regarding TKD, and it made me hungry for more martial arts lore. I think it would be really cool if you had a series or more specific videos regarding the history and best stories of martial arts. Anyways, I have to thank you because I ended up seeking the best quality of training I am able to afford and began training bjj and catch wrestling. Much love.
saw some scrub included some videos of shadow wrestling into those "gym fails compilation". I thought shadow grappling is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Anyone can shadow box, but shadow grappling needs a lot of athleticism. Seeing a chain of different moves in rapid succession just gives me a dopamine hit.
Mr. Dewey I got some questions and would love to hear your take on them, or either one of them if your interested. 1. Did you ever had depression or seasonal depression in the winter and if so, how did you deal with it? 2. What is a good martial artist? You talked a lot on what it takes physically depending on what you want to do with it, but I'd love to hear your opinion on a true fighters mindset. To me it has a lot to do with facing your fears and overcoming hardship, but I often think about what it is mentally that makes one a martial artist/fighter. 3. Do you think about your role in this world a lot? Do you think everyone has a determined purpose? If so, how would one determine what it is? If not and everyone has to find it out for themselves, what should ones own life purpose be determined by in your opinion? Is it all about being happy whatever it takes? Or is that already hedonism? 4. How do you face all the negative things in your life? You seem like a kind hearted, optimistic person very much unlike me. I personally have a deep distrust towards people because of negative experiences and it often feels like I have to fight against the entire world which draws me towards martial arts mainly. I feel like having the mind set of fighting against everything if necessary is key if one wants to overcome lifes harshness and I realize it is a tough road ahead with my current way of thinking, but I do see it as unpleasant necessity. 5. You said before in one of your videos that Mixed Martial Arts is not learning multiple Martial arts and mixing them, it's its own established sport. Did I understand that correctly and do you think to be able to be a good fighter, it is wasted time to first learn different martial arts and then go to a MMA school? I hope you're doing well and kindest regards!
Note to self: wrestle more, wrestle with my mates more, and wrestle the shadows more. And holy crap, Tai Chi is full of wrestling moves?! I never knew! Cheers! 👍
I'm glad that you are 42 and living like spring chicken. I hear too many people in their twenties say "dur dur you won't be able to do any of that after you turn 25 dur dur".
Thanks for the video! This is exactly what I've been doing for last 10 or so months due to being unable to train with people (for obvious reasons.) On the Judo side this is actually called tandoku renshu and it's basically a requirement anyway considering the amount of reps you need to do for the movements. It'd bore any partner to tears, haha.
I miss wrestling. Jujitsu if fun, but the classes I've been in just arent the same. We learn ground technique, but not as much standing. And we practice less standing cuz were always starting on the ground. So what you're saying is, taichi, sprawls, and capoeira is good for adding to your grapple game. Lol. I remember doin "motion, shoot, sprawl" in wrestling. Didnt know that was technically shadow wrestling. I never really heard if shadow grappling till I started watching your channel.
i know these but whenever i try these with a resisiting opponent we always endup in a gridlock where we both are simply pummeling and nothing happens until one of us is tired nothing happens we just keep trying.
Thanks for this! An interesting titbit, following on from your video on capoeira movements: that sit-out like very much like a negativa and rôle... and the last little sequence would have worked well for a ginga apart from actually sitting on the mat.
wrestling is one thing, but wrestling while trying to maintain crystal clear audio is a god given TALENT
The last time I did shadow wrestling the mf choked me out
So shadow wrestling is not wrestling in shadow realm!?
You forgot to hire a shadow referee
Ha Ha that reminds me of me shadow boxing in front of my buddy's it's already weird to then and then I just pretend to get kbocked down lol
