    We just had a new white belt join our dojo. When we noticed that this guy moved way to purposefully to be a newbie. He was giving purple belts all they could handle. Turns out that he was a D1 wrestler from Iowa and coaches wrestling. He has a high gas tank and very explosive. He'll be crazy lethal once he starts picking up the nuances. He absorbs knowledge.

    Oh man, I just loved the sequence where Paul did the backwards seatbelt roll yet you were still able to maintain your composure and snatch the kneebar as you were being rolled! Full disclosure, I've done the backwards seatbelt roll to people and it throws them off all the time because it usually leaves the recipient in a "What is happening right now?" state because people just really aren't used to going backwards, so I was just mind blown that you were already countering as you were being rolled backwards! Good job.

      That roll looked like it was heavy for the neck? 2 people weight on it? Am I missing something? For me it is a risky move. I wouldnt do it to a partner in the gym. If angles go wrong.. bye bye

    • @bronstet
      @bronstet Год назад +4

      @andersnilssondvm I get where you are coming from. It is not dangerous because both people are rolling and the momentum keeps pressure from going on the neck. Where a problem would come in is if the person being rolled realizes it, panics and tries to forcefully stop it while the other person keeps rolling. Then it could be very bad because then the neck will absorb force. My own experience is that the movement is so fast that an experienced martial artist will just smartly roll with it as Jeff did here and keep going..

      @andersnilssondvm I totally get it. I have told all my instructors I will NEVER let it get to the point where I need surgery and will retire from martial arts before that happens. Fortunately I have kept both myself as well as all my training partners safe for over 20 years.

When they go to a bjj where peoples rolls really chilling, it’s so different to get use to. If you go too hard you get weird looks and peoples don’t want to roll with you because you only have 1 speed max.
    In real life, don’t go to the ground, someone will come up to you and kick the shit out of you. Wrestling, boxing is plenty enough for self defense.

    The only time I ever wrestled was in freshman and sophomore PE class. The PE coach, who had been a college wrestler and football player, said that for every move, there is a counter, and whoever does their move better come out on top. I think this is especially true in any combat sport. If a wrestler is faster and applies their technique faster they will win against someone in BJJ. I also think one will compliment the other.

    2:06 at this point when he does the “elbow tap” it’s actually what my coach taught us at my high school since when you reach too far and do a knee tap they can throw they’re hips over and we’ll be too extended, it is easier to bring someone down with a knee tap since it does bring the hips down to the mat but doing it this way with the elbow is usually straight after squaring back up with your opponent which he does to you which catching most people off guard, typing is kinda hard to explain but I hope this explains a bit 😅

    This is a great video contrasting styles. I will say that one of the biggest strengths of the wrestler is the conditioning. It's not just strength. There were some missed moves by the wrestler the was contributed by his conditioning (which you addressed). You can see that when Paul was handling you and doing well in the first sequence but disengaged. A wrestler in better shape would have continued picking you apart. When he flipped you over, that was a risky move. A great wrestler is going to take someone down. Takedowns in wrestling is also great to see. Just watch a prime Matt Hughes. Wrestlers are just built different. Their training is literally insane.

    Wrestling in BJJ is the best. I’m a 2 stripe white belt and I’ve definitely gravitated toward the wrestling based, wrestling style jiu jitsu. It’s very effective. Nothing better than getting a solid shot in bjj

    Good video I wrestled in college and eventually went to jiu jitsu. It helped a lot. Yet against the black belt level guys (after I got my blue belt) they were allowed to use leg locks on me and boy did they ever. I always tapped fast because I have no problem loosing. I do have a problem not being able to walk for 9 months. Good video and analysis Both men clearly have a good set of skills. Diverse styles which made this 📸 all the more enjoyable.

    A high school-level wrestler is not 'high level', especially a man who has a career and a life outside the mats. He's jacked and clearly has some legit skills so I don't disparage him. But this title is misleading. Please roll with a D1 or D2 wrestler (former or current) with a little submission experience. Then you've rolled with a high level wrestler.
