We just had a new white belt join our dojo. When we noticed that this guy moved way to purposefully to be a newbie. He was giving purple belts all they could handle. Turns out that he was a D1 wrestler from Iowa and coaches wrestling. He has a high gas tank and very explosive. He'll be crazy lethal once he starts picking up the nuances. He absorbs knowledge.

i see what you are saying, but im a lawyer too, in brazil, and staying fit its alright with my job... there is no problem being a good lawyer and taking care of my body, and training bjj.
@@waltherwagner9711 absolutely agree with you on this. Throw a family into the mix, very hard. Also higher stress/longer hours can make it harder to keep up. No way anyone can train like that with a stressful/long hours in a job with a family to top it off.
Oh man, I just loved the sequence where Paul did the backwards seatbelt roll yet you were still able to maintain your composure and snatch the kneebar as you were being rolled! Full disclosure, I've done the backwards seatbelt roll to people and it throws them off all the time because it usually leaves the recipient in a "What is happening right now?" state because people just really aren't used to going backwards, so I was just mind blown that you were already countering as you were being rolled backwards! Good job.
That roll looked like it was heavy for the neck? 2 people weight on it? Am I missing something? For me it is a risky move. I wouldnt do it to a partner in the gym. If angles go wrong.. bye bye
@andersnilssondvm I get where you are coming from. It is not dangerous because both people are rolling and the momentum keeps pressure from going on the neck. Where a problem would come in is if the person being rolled realizes it, panics and tries to forcefully stop it while the other person keeps rolling. Then it could be very bad because then the neck will absorb force. My own experience is that the movement is so fast that an experienced martial artist will just smartly roll with it as Jeff did here and keep going..
@@bronstet Thanks for the answer. Im a bit old so I try to avoid all roll on neck. I dont even invert =D I even tell people that if they tend to put me on my neck then I will tap very early/right away. i need to stop watch bjj injuries in youtube hahaha
@andersnilssondvm I totally get it. I have seen a couple of bad injuries live as well as after surgery results from ones I didn't witness but knew must have been bad just from seeing the person post surgery never being the same again. I have told all my instructors I will NEVER let it get to the point where I need surgery and will retire from martial arts before that happens. Fortunately I have kept both myself as well as all my training partners safe for over 20 years.
Wrestlers have massive core strength on both upper and lower body than other form of grappling while BJJ is more technical. But learning both, wrestling, BJJ, and Judo will bring your MMA into the next level. 💪

Thanks that was so informative. I am a novice to grappling with some knowledge from back in the late 90's when we were trying to figure out MMA in peoples yards homes and some gyms. I am jealous of all the technical knowledge everyone has now a days.
Wrestling is great for controlling opponents but has no finishers. This is exactly what I expected. As a wrestler this was the case for me until I began to learn some BJJ. Great video 👍

So I’ve never wrestled nor done BJJ. I had no idea every move has a counter move. Wrist grab, chin strap I love the break down of everything. Would have totally missed all this without the breakdown.
Good wrestlers motor just does not stop, they train always max intensity, it’s uncomfortable, blood and sweat. When they go to a bjj where peoples rolls really chilling, it’s so different to get use to. If you go too hard you get weird looks and peoples don’t want to roll with you because you only have 1 speed max. In real life, don’t go to the ground, someone will come up to you and kick the shit out of you. Wrestling, boxing is plenty enough for self defense.
The only time I ever wrestled was in freshman and sophomore PE class. The PE coach, who had been a college wrestler and football player, said that for every move, there is a counter, and whoever does their move better come out on top. I think this is especially true in any combat sport. If a wrestler is faster and applies their technique faster they will win against someone in BJJ. I also think one will compliment the other.

2:06 at this point when he does the “elbow tap” it’s actually what my coach taught us at my high school since when you reach too far and do a knee tap they can throw they’re hips over and we’ll be too extended, it is easier to bring someone down with a knee tap since it does bring the hips down to the mat but doing it this way with the elbow is usually straight after squaring back up with your opponent which he does to you which catching most people off guard, typing is kinda hard to explain but I hope this explains a bit 😅

This is a great video contrasting styles. I will say that one of the biggest strengths of the wrestler is the conditioning. It's not just strength. There were some missed moves by the wrestler the was contributed by his conditioning (which you addressed). You can see that when Paul was handling you and doing well in the first sequence but disengaged. A wrestler in better shape would have continued picking you apart. When he flipped you over, that was a risky move. A great wrestler is going to take someone down. Takedowns in wrestling is also great to see. Just watch a prime Matt Hughes. Nevertheless, this was still good to see. Thanks for sharing.

Khabib also studied wrestling and sambo (soviet wrestling). Khabib also added judo. Khabib is one of the greatest fighters ever and credits his wrestling background. Jon Jones was a high school champion wrestler and collegiate national champion wrestler. Without wrestling, these legends wouldn't be legends. Wrestling is one the greatest grappling sports in the world.

@@jrock2019 Studying both wrestling and BJJ at their roots they still are different. And the Gracie example is comparing wrestling and BJJ styles. Like what I said, Khabib and Jones are prime examples of using wrestling as a foundation without being a "high level" BJJ. There are a lot of wrestlers that have added other martial art disciples without being a black belt in BJJ and become great MMA fighters.
2:05 that move their is called a cement mixer. If your opponent takes a bad shot and you time it right it can make for a really effective counter attack. Keep up the great work!

@@RJ-rp8yd it's true though. Grappling training is more grueling and tougher than boxing training and a pure striker most of the time will be a fish out of water once taken to the floor. Uncommon for a pure striker to best a grappler.
Wrestling in BJJ is the best. I’m a 2 stripe white belt and I’ve definitely gravitated toward the wrestling based, wrestling style jiu jitsu. It’s very effective. Nothing better than getting a solid shot in bjj
Good video I wrestled in college and eventually went to jiu jitsu. It helped a lot. Yet against the black belt level guys (after I got my blue belt) they were allowed to use leg locks on me and boy did they ever. I always tapped fast because I have no problem loosing. I do have a problem not being able to walk for 9 months. Good video and analysis Both men clearly have a good set of skills. Diverse styles which made this 📸 all the more enjoyable.
A high school-level wrestler is not 'high level', especially a man who has a career and a life outside the mats. He's jacked and clearly has some legit skills so I don't disparage him. But this title is misleading. Please roll with a D1 or D2 wrestler (former or current) with a little submission experience. Then you've rolled with a high level wrestler.

Named the cement mixer from Northampton PA where they have a lot of concrete factories and the biggest wrestling area in the country “Lehigh valley”

Good video I wrestled in college and eventually went to jiu jitsu. It helped a lot. Yet against the black belt level guys (after I got my blue belt) they were allowed to use leg locks on me and boy did they ever. I always tapped fast because I have no problem loosing. I do have a problem not being able to walk for 9 months. Good video and analysis Both men clearly have a good set of skills. Diverse styles which made this 📸 all the more enjoyable.

A high school-level wrestler is not 'high level', especially a man who has a career and a life outside the mats. He's jacked and clearly has some legit skills so I don't disparage him. But this title is misleading. Please roll with a D1 or D2 wrestler (former or current) with a little submission experience. Then you've rolled with a high level wrestler.
