- Practice your close & open voicings with this great standard "Beautiful Love"
Close voicings are often called "rootless voicings", or - when played in the left hand - "left hand voicings".
For maj7 and min7 chords we use 9th chords (maj9 and min9) without the root. For dom7 chords we use guide tones + 9 and 13, again without the root. You can also use these LH voicings to comp behind yourself while soloing in the RH.
Open voicings (or "spread voicings") are the most complete voicings we use in jazz, not only to harmonize a melody, but even to comp behind a singer or soloist.
They consist of root - guide tones (3 & 7) - tensions - melody. Since we use both hands to play these open voicings, we have plenty of space to add extensions or to use alterations and reharmonizations. Notice we only play 2 notes in the LH (1 & 3 or 1 & 7)!

I absolutely love your tutorials! I'm concentrating on this one right now, twelve keying the different voicing sessions. Keep the videos coming. You have a great style of teaching!
Wonderful, voicings , swing , feeling ,,’...amazing ,, ...Fred/French Riviera/France
Amazing! I was looking for a lesson on two-handed comping. Thank you!
This is over the top wonderful! Thank you so much!
This is fantastic! Good to see that it is OK to use closed voicings for comping. I also really like the closed voicings with octaves on top. I use that but wondered if it is acceptable. Great to hear the sound of open voicing comping vs closed voicing comping. Thanks so much.
Wanneer je je terug wat wilt toeleggen op piano en je toevallig uitkomt bij een tutorial van je 'oude' leerkracht! Fijn! Bedankt voor de heldere video, Stijn!

Great video! My wife wanted to hear the difference in style and sound of closed vs open voicings using the same song. Accidentally came upon this video. I also like to see the same song played with different techniques - spread, closed LH, walking bass, stride, block chords, etc.
Thank you! Glad the video is helpful!
Totally a gem!!!! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks a lot!

My professional jazz piano-playing instructor and I are jamming all over this nice “set-up” of a classic tune (Bill Evans - Explorations ‘61 with bassist Scott Lafaro and Paul Motian drums) for the next week or so. Thank you for great job you do of stimulating our playing.
Never gets old playing this tune, swinging all the way. I think I like comping part as much as simply playing the melody.
Note that Victor Young also penned “Stella by Starlight”.
Yo, what’s up with the missing solo tips?
Just what I have been looking for. I don’t know my chords but I read music well and with the chords in the left hand, I can use my Clavinova piano jazz accompaniment tracks to make it sound really good. Thanks a lot. 👍
Thank you! You’re very welcome!
Very smooth voicings
Thank you
Awesome Great video, thanks a lot
Thank you!
Amazing content man. Learning so much. Have you thought of doing any uptempo tunes like Rhythm changes, Donna lee etc?
Thanks a lot! Up tempo tunes or rhythm changes would be a great next project.. I’ll consider it!
Stijn Wauters thanks. I appreciate the work you put into these. I know it’s a lot of work.

Thank you for all your wonderful lessons. I wondered where can I find the jazz accompaniments, is it iReal Pro
Thanks a lot! I often use iReal Pro to make the backing tracks, but for this tutorial I used this backing track: ruclips.net/video/VAsOmSTLKho/видео.html It's a great channel!
Please make more tutorial about jazz Bebop Piano...😂😂thanks
Nice job)but this link not working(
Great content! What sort of skill level would this be aimed at?
Hi, I think these voicings (close & open) are quite standard and even basic for an experienced jazz pianist, but if you are new to jazz and have little understanding of jazz harmony, this could be too difficult.. I would say skill level intermediate?.. :-)
I noticed your open voicing section used all rooted voicings. You can also have open voicings that are rootless, right? I think you did some of those at the very end of the closed voicing section. I looked back; no you didn't - they were closed voicing on the bottom with upper structures in the right hand.
any chance to have the transcription? thans in advance
Se fai piano solo, le toniche vanno messe - se suoni in trio con contrabbasso e batteria, allora
questi accordi vanno bene.
