People need to realize how vast hairstylists can expertise in. Brads expertise seems to be in colouring, especially bleaching. Nothing near taking care of curly hair
can i be honest? im a hairdresser too, and i never thought this guy was famous because he is a good hairdresser. he is a good entertainer who happens to be a hairdresser, and uses that to his favor, but a lot of the "tips" he gives are straight up bullshit. since hair is so subjective and different to every person, his tips makes it look like a one size fits all
maybe im more pissed off than everyone else at him because i am a curly girl and i remember he said once in a video "you wouldn't want your curls clumpy and hard like this mess right here" while talking about the lil' drills curly girls do in their hair, kind of the ones op have in this video 😭 has been like 3 years and still doesn't sit right with me
I caught onto his bullshit when he made a video saying NOBODY needs more than a coin-sized dollop of shampoo to properly clean your hair. I have a very thick head of hair. Just a lot of hair in general. Why do I have to stretch a tiny dollop of shampoo across more hair mass than average?
His dollop of shampoo claim was made because he has a line of hair products that are priced like high end products. His 8 oz bottle of shampoo wouldn't last a long time if you had to use more than a dollop and at high end prices it wouldn't be cost effective.
@@lucarinz4338 I think it might also be because he said himself in one video that he never used a drugstore shampoo, because his parent(s) was/were hairdresser(s), so he always had access to professional products. That + not having to wash ends + possible rarity of your thick, dense hair, might make it more probable that it was true in his experience, even if it's not true in yours and, well, everyone else using standard drugstore shampoos.
I had never heard of him before. But as a curly hair girl, and someone who has tried a million things to manage my curls, I trust what Mel says because she has curly hair too. Not everything she has said works for me, but most of it and I, grateful to have found her. I had cancer 3 years ago and my curls have never been the same so after to years I’m now trying to get my curls to bounce back. I needed Mel desperately and trust her. Glad she fights back with proof
And this is why I don’t let non-curly haired people touch my hair. No matter how much “research” they claim to have done they almost never know how to handle curly hair
Lol! My stylist has curly hair. However he mostly styles straight causcasian /European hair and his hair is type 3. When we first started out he had to learn about my 4c hair, which I absolutely love because he is super cautious not to cause damage while learning. I also think that he would straighten his own hair a lot and he would have it up in a ponytail. Now after 5 years together, his hair is worn down and healthy in the most perfect ringlets. Lol! I wasn't expecting to get my stylist to change their hairstyle but I guess helping me to get my hair into perfect healthy ringlets worn down with pride, encouraged him to do the same. Everyone's hair just as they were born with is naturally beautiful and if they decide to enhance or change that for lifestyle or cosmetic reasons that's beautiful too. As long as it's healthy.
I completely understand. A lot of times, us straight haired folks don't realize the true effort that goes into luscious, curly, happy hair. Makes me so thankful that my curly mom let me fix her hair multiple times during cosmetology, and my curly friends too. I was so thankful that I became good at curly hair. Moisture is key, cut less than you think, and really feel in your client's hair! Curly girls can have multiple curl patterns, so you have to even concoct bleach and color differently depending on the porosity of each curl section. Just to make a few. Oh, and 90% of the time, curly folk are known for THICK hair (both in strand, and in diameter on the scalp), so mix more color/bleach than you think you need, don't be stingy on the leave-in, and please listen to your clients!
I think it is HILARIOUS that everyone here seems to think "curly hair" means women of color. hahahaha Fuck. Girls, nah, you can be white ass like me and have plenty of issues with your curly hair. Curly hair issues are not solely a color woman's issue. But I mean, yeah, like let's take the bullshit we're all feeding ourselves these days and pretend.
This is absolutely hilarious because a few weeks ago a girl at my job (who is taking cosmetology school btw) asked if I was gonna straighten my curly hair before bleaching so the roots would be lightened??? I was like no way! And yet she told me I was gonna ruin my hair by dying it at home. I’ve done all my haircuts, big chops and styles at home and people always ask if I got it professionally done. Never trusting a person with straight hair (and with 0 curly hair knowledge) to tell me how to do my hair.
Yea I also only do my hair at home cause I could never trust a person with straight hair to do mine! Sure there are some that know about curly hair but the majority don’t. Especially where I live, it’s all white tourist ladies with their blonde balayage
I don't trust anyone with my hair, even the so called experts in curly hair... at least here in my city in Brazil. I once had one do a bob on me. It was perfect. When I went back to redo the cut, she left me with a Dart Vader Helmet.
@@Katie-vy5rd I use Dark and Lovely (I believe that’s the name) or Adore. I never usually keep a color for long so I don’t do permanent. Whenever the color fades it normally goes to a brownish or a light red so re-dying it another color is fine and I’ve only lightened my hair once. Dark and lovely is better if you wash your hair more often because adore washes out realllyyyy fast lol. Hope this helps!
Notice how Brad said he did "so much research", but then didn't give us a single fact?? 😄 This is why I watch Mell for curly hair advice...... and I watch Brad for bleach fails. 💜
I stopped watching him long ago and it’s annoying how people defend him on things he doesn’t know and him bashing other stylists. I also am a licensed cosmetologist and have curly hair and the things he says are absolutely wrong. There’s a video that he did making a girl with curly hair blonde he fried her hair and used 30 vol. like nooooo you need to go low and slow! and he said I like to go high and quick so it can go blonde fast. Think they ended up shaving her hair short because of the damage.
It's one thing for him to be wrong and proven to be wrong which is ok. Regarding the girl, she gave an interview and disagreed with people that bashed him because she wanted a few days of platinum blonde hair because she already intended to shave it off. In her youtube video, she explained that he told her the risks and she was like " I don't care, I'm gonna shave it anyway after". Let's not deviate from curly hair or spread missinformation for the drama and attention.
@@andreeaconstantinescu1513 I’m aware of the situation and I’m not deviating. Every hairstylist should know how to properly lift hair to platinum and even he admitted to messing up when placing bleach on the roots first but unless he did a strand test to see how her hair would lighten he shouldn’t have used 30 volumes especially on curly fine hair like hers. You can get platinum with 20 vol and wait longer for it to process. It’s not spreading misinformation. Of course people shouldn’t bash others but also he was being reckless in his application. It would have left her hair in a less compromised state had he follow proper procedures in lightening her hair. Just because she was going to shave it all after doesn’t mean it’s ok to use higher volume in developer. You have to consider the integrity of the hair always.
@@e.mysttt then it seems you missed the point of the video then or her reaction video that eexplains it. Like i said, i was interested in seeing people confirm the youtuber's scientific remarks not bring up missinformation. The hair was already fried from before (she admitted) and again she gave him a lose hand. "think they ended up shaving her hair" is again directed as being his fault when in terms he was not the reason. I agree the application and tehnique was not correct but seeing it from objective side, it just wasn't the kind of video made for it. Also, if he was fast, you also don't know if it was her indication because she was rushing or not? The video shows signs of being rushed through her gestures. Still, curly hair was the subject here, not me explaining after watching all the videos from him and her why that happened and why it was so obvious that it was a co joint video for views not for learning.
@@andreeaconstantinescu1513 No I didn’t miss the point. If hair is already in a compromised state, then it should be treated more careful and even then strand tested to not be damaged even more. In a salon setting, what he is would not be acceptable. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. I didn’t direct blame to him when I said he shaved her head, that’s just a fact because it happened. I never said it was his fault. She did want it shaved. It was just an example that he is not knowledgeable on curly hair. When people watch his videos, they absolutely look at them to learn sometimes. I’ve also gotten clients that followed tutorials by him when they were just entertainment videos and messed their hair up and there are many stylists that have had similar experiences. He has a massive audience and he spread missinformation and people believe him. Even when a client says I don’t care, take me blonde whatever it takes, you still have to be careful, even if it’s a friend, you can get sued and bad practicing can get your license revoked. You can lose your whole career with mistakes like this. Curly hair is absolutely the subject here and I know what happened and whether it was for view and not for learning, people still believe he has credibility and they believe him when he speaks even about things he is not very knowledgeable about like curly hair.
@@e.mysttt again, still missing the point. If the client says to do this, you just do it. Been to expensive and normal salons and as long as you understand the risks, the hair dresser will do it. From personal experience, i've done it more than 4 times because i wanted platinum blonde and just cut it short after. The integrity you speak of is rare and mostly seen it on youtube comments and have dyed my hair constantly for about 17 years and only 2 or 3 times at home. I did not say he is knowledgable in curly hair but it just wasn't the place or time, or video to talk about something unrelated.
@@sailsa they are saying it’s a good thing- she’s not only a general hair professional but she specialises in the hair type that Brad is trying to educate HER on.
Im a cat groomer... and this feels like when dog groomers try to tell me how to groom a cat... sure we dabble in the same field but we are certainly not playing the same game.
Oh my gawd, you are RIGHT! Shaving a dog - use sharp blade, keep dog still. Shaving a cat - sedate, and use every precaution to prevent the skin from ripping!! Even brushing them is 2 different styles! Washing - water temp needs to be a smidge warmer for cats since their body temp is higher. Cold water on hot cat is agony for kitty! And soaps can burn them more easily.
Holy crap! I didn't even know cats could be groomed. 🤣🤣🤣 I just assumed that they were self groomed... Like wild animals... On your furniture, walls, soft furnishings... Skin. Lol! 🤣🤣🤣
Pretty sure the entire curly community can agree that Brad knows very little- to nothing, about curly hair. He tells people to touch their hair while drying, he said curly hair dries faster. He also compared a mannequin with straight hair, to curly hair. He even had the AUDACITY to say to brush curly hair DRY 😬🤢
I used to love watching his videos but did stop bc he doesn’t ever go into curly hair. Which i feel is better than someone who doesn’t know putting misinformation about curly hair.
I watch only his reactions to bleach fails, I'm not listening to anything he has to say about curly hair because he really doesn't understand it, and that's ok, but it's not ok to tell people about something you don't know about, someone might listen to him 😬
Ok, some things he says is wrong but other things he says you can see where he is coming from. Hes right about curly hair generally drying faster because it usually has a higher porosity than straight hair.
Love how Mell talks and defends herself with proof, also it is obvious that Brad Doesn't has a lot of knowlege about curly hair based in some of his opinions in previous videos.
@@bludbrat i think we all r different For me I always do in wet I did dry too Both work amazing As I got low porosity I get really really less hair breakage in wash day too ND have coarse hair
@@bludbrat when it came to dandruff and dry scalp He called Dr Mike He have lot or controversy in yt ND they were promoting head & shoulders I'm like seriously
Completely agree! Brad always says curly hair is dry and it always annoys me because curly hair is prone to dryness but isn’t dry automatically 😫 he needs more knowledge about curly/wavy/coily hair
His reply was actually embarrassing. You gave a detailed, scientific explanation and he was just like, "no because come on?" Good one, Brad. Really well thought out there.
I mean we all remember how he ruined Snitchery’s hair, and has done sub par looks on those he has collaborated with. No shade, full truth. So would I listen to him re: hair? Not so much
Literally my friend started immediately drying his roots and never going to bed with wet hair, and within a month all of his burning, itching, and flaking, went away 100%!
Not sure that's why your scalp was on fire. I've been air drying my hair for yeeeaaaars, I blow dry it basically 3-4 times a year. I've never had scalp problems. (But I also don't go to bed with wet hair) Edit: now that I think of it, I also don't apply any products after washing my hair (the only thing I put while my hair is still super wet is argan oil, and that's literally it). It does make sense that having your scalp wet for long while having products on wouldn't be good. Meaning... what I said should be true, it's the products that are the problem (or the product + time combo). But also, unlike I thi k most people, I also towel "dry" my scalp, and it doesn't take too long for it to dry 🤔 Edit#2: now I also remembered that the only time my scalp was actually itchy *was* after blow drying it. And I do it the "Mel way" and low-heat, so idk...
Brad absolutely refuses to take in information about curly hair and it bums me tf out. Very reflective of the majority of the professional hair dresser community. The reason we have to pay those who actually learn about it 200+ for a curly dedicated cut, and STILL have the fear of having our hair ruined lol.
And then said hair dresser gets pissy about me dyeing my own hair (instead of paying her $300+) and then I have no one to go to and cut my own hair now, too. Ugh.
Absolutely!!! I haven't had anyone but myself cut mine for years because of horrible experiences with stylists who respond to questions about how comfortable they are doing curly hair with "we are qualified to work on all types of hair" ---- yeah, that's not what I was asking! Plus, I've colored my own hair exclusively for at least the last 12+ years. My hair looks better/healthier now than it ever did when I had it done professionally. My curls are now tailbone length, so I need to cut it again very soon.
Oh, you made all the librarians so happy! Doing your research, citing your sources, going to what looks to be high quality sources! You made this curly librarian's day.
As someone who prides herself on being an academic, I’m gonna go with the person who has not just textured hair but an entire reference list for all to look into for themselves.
Maybe I’m biased but if the results are good and knowledgeable, I’d most likely take advice from someone who has my similar hair texture or someone who is more knowledgeable about curly/natural hair. Not knocking Brad because he’s probably talented and knows hair. But I tend to go with what I know
THIS!!! i feel like Mel has more knowledge in curly hair than Brad. Brad is an amazing hairstylist but i’m going with someone with my texture/similar hair. Cause from my experience, my hair used be wet for more than 8hours a day before i began blow drying.
@@jaydenegriffin1566 I had the same issue. Plus, whenever I blow dry I get more volume at my roots which is what I always wanted. Otherwise I’d have a triangle head
University lecturer and lifelong curly-haired person here. 1. I'm so here for people on social media who make reference to scientific studies in order to support their views. Thank you for doing this response! 2. I am so here for people who have curly hair sharing knowledge on curly hair. I don't even go to a hairdresser anymore because they never know how to handle my curly hair - they either treat it like straight hair or else they offer to straighten it for me (which is more than a little offensive to be honest). I'm 33 and I've never left a hairdresser feeling like my hair looks better than it would've done if I'd styled it myself. 3. I am so here for people who advocate keeping the hairdryer about 15cm away from the hair while blow-drying it with a heat protectant and continuous movement. Anecdotally, I've been doing that since I moved to Scotland in 2016 and could no longer let my hair air-dry like I did when I lived in Africa (because - despite what Brad says - thick, curly hair will take FOREVER to air-dry in a country like Scotland). My hair is so much healthier now.
I have completely straight hair and mine takes about 8 hours to dry. I can't imagine how long curly hair can take. Brad makes a lot of false statements about curly and textured hair
As someone who knows nothing about hair and loves and trusts Brad Mondo, I tend to take things he says at face value! I am so glad I found your channel! I am literally always trying to find new ways to fix my hair. It just goes to show that if ANY hairstylist makes a claim and states it as a fact- they better have a lot of research and multiple studies to back it up! I am no longer taking “I am a hairstylist so trust me” as a reasonable form of credibility anymore lol. Thank you🖤
As a professional hairstylist/barber, myself? Don’t take what Brad says, at face value, whatsoever. And this is coming from someone who formerly enjoyed his content and has even purchased his overpriced, influencer “professional” products. His deep moisturizing conditioner greatly contributed to drying out my hair and locking up. I had never had anything like that happen, prior. I don’t watch Mel, often; though, her content is excellent and informative. Brad built his career greatly off of his charisma - not, necessarily, his expertise.
Yeah I mean think about it, we've all gone to super cuts or the equivalent and come out looking like Godzilla's crazy Auntie! 🤣 They're hairdressers too! Not all hairdressers are created equal!
I already knew Brad couldn’t be trusted when it came to the curly/kinky community based on his last video and the fact that he so confidently claimed that NO ONE walked around with wet hair all day just destroyed any and all credibility he had. Good lord. How dismissive can someone be. 🙄
Yeah he has no actual hair health knowledge. He is the reason you can't trust hairdressers. They don't actually care about getting boring about hair to make it healthy
@@Debble Exactly!! I didn’t see a stylist for YEARS because they were too afraid to admit they didn’t know what they were doing or assumed that rules for 1 kind of hair just applied to everyone else. Lucky for me, I found someone but they are so rare and hard to find.
I'm glad someone said it Brad has been dissing curly hair for the longest in his videos then would put up a curly hair video to save face but we see how he is
@@Debble actually he does have a lot of knowledge but the problem is that he has barely any knowledge on curly hair. The things needed on straight hair and curly hair are completely different so it is recomendable to go to a hairdresser that has a similar hair like yours or is used to it. When he says ive been a stylist for 10 plus years i know best is the EXACT reason why most people are TERRIFIED to go to a new salon cause u get people like brad mondo saying they know what they are doin when they have little to no experience with your hair type and then you end up coming out the salon looking like a rejected poodle 😑
I like his videos and I find him fun, but he doesn't look like someone who knows what they're doing and I'd never trust him with curls. I've seen him doing a girl's natural hair and OH GOD NO. Once I heard him say that hair oil from his brand will moisturize your hair. Dude, even the dumbest curl enthusiast knows that oil doesn't hydrate hair. He def is spreading some misinformation about hair, I hate to say it but it's people like him who make it very difficult to gather good haircare informations, thank god we have Mell who gives straight and proven facts.
yessss i can’t tell you how many bad haircuts i’ve had bc they obviously cut and treat it the way they would do for straight/wavy hair and it NEVER looks good. still trying to find a trustable stylist lol
this is why i have a childhood fear of hair salons bc it was just these straight haired stylists lookin at me like an experiment. the FACECRACK of him asking who has wet hair all day.
I've never trusted Brad's advice on curly hair ever since he admitted that he didn't even know what a Deva Cut was... you know, one of the most well-known curly cut methods?

Facts. Science. RESEARCH! These are some of the reasons I love Mell. The fact that she posted her sources on a TikTok video shows how much work she puts into giving us solid, fact-based advice. Brad Mondo is entertaining. Mell is educational, inspirational, entertaining, and a total game-changer for the curly hair community.
Right? Mell and Amanda put in SO much work to make this content! It’s always packed full of helpful information AND entertaining. And all the clips they’ve been adding lately to give a visual of the information being presented are awesome!
Mell, I have to be honest- I would have been pissed if someone chopped half my TikTok and called me a liar and your response was nothing less than the graceful reply I would expect from our curly queen!! Thank you for representing our curly/coily community and doing the work that no one else does. We love and appreciate you!!
I 100% agree. I felt the same way, she represented us so well with her graceful words. If I was making a video in response I would have gotten the curly hair community in trouble with my mouth 😂😂😂😂 or would have been too nervous to reply and start beef! She really did this eloquently and also with some sass but good sass bc she had the PROOF!!!!!
I would actually love him to stop covering hair with texture if this is going to be his responses. It’s embarrassing and feels even more marginalizing. Hair dressers should start specifying what hair type they’re familiar with instead of pretending because they’re skilled in one type of texture, the same knowledge must apply to all.
It's so weird, I watch a lot of his videos (and Mell's, I'm a curly) and he's usually so sensitive and specific about how curly hair techniques don't follow the same rules as straight. This feels like an outlier! Not really sure what the story is here but did feel compelled to say he's not always like this
I learned SO much from this! As a person who’s in cosmetology school currently… it’s literally shameful how little they teach us about curls and coils. I have one instructor at my school who specializes in curly/coily hair and a lot of days I will spend the entire day working on my textured mannequins and she will give me tips and she’s already taught me multiple ways to do wet sets on curly hair. Today I gave my textured mannequin a haircut for the first time, and I almost cried of happiness. It looked good to me! I’ve decided in my mind I’m going to truly dedicate myself to learning everything I can during this time. I have a whole lot more to learn but I am truly dedicated. It took watching only half of one of your videos to subscribe!!!! Thank you I can’t wait to binge the rest of your videos!!!!! Thank you so much!!!
Can't wait for you to bring that same passion to someone's look. Imagine the person with curls/coils, who's hair you've just cut, who wants to cry because it looks so good. They've ~finally~ found their stylist. Keep going and good luck!
I literally cackled when he said “who’s walking around with wet hair all day” and I KNEW you were gonna come for him ahahaha. This was a gorgeous response, there is such a lack of knowledge about curls in mainstream the beauty industry.. I’d let mel have her way with my curls over brad any day 🙌🏼
Something about Brad Mondo has always rubbed me the wrong way. I don't know what it is, but something about his content gives me corporate vibes. He's not a curly hair expert and has clearly not been trained to handle curly hair. The way he talked about how the Denman brush works for curly hair made me cringe. With you all the way, Mell.
He's one of those gay dudes who hides his low key racism and misogyny behind his "super silly sass" and "expertise". He's had some really bad takes on textured hair and it's usually referring to someone who's not white...
When I saw Brad's video and heard that "no one is walking around with wet hair for the whole day" I screamed. If I let my hair air dry, it takes 6 HOURS for them to dry! It's a nightmare! So yeah, blow-drying is most likely healthier for someone with hair like mine.
Guurl, it takes me day and half. Lucky you with those 6 hours. If my hair would dry in that amount of time I would probably let it air dry once in a while , Lol.
@@juliajelkes1230 the work is to keep it from being a giant frizz ball on top of her head. You don't just wake up an go with curly hair (unless you're just brushing it into a pony tail or wearing a hat lol)

Even me, who hasn't in any way figured it out yet, was sat there saying "no" outloud, in a room on my own, at half the stuff he said! And the comments were filled with curlys disagreeing and mentioning your name and videos. You're our curly queen Mel ❤
I love Brado but I would also be laughing at him so hard if I gave him my ultra-fine, ultra-dry, 4c hair today. My stylist and my trichologists struggle to do my hair lol! Which makes me think yup my hair is not "as easy as everyone thinks"
I feel like Brad's received a lot of criticism for only talking about straight hair styles in his past videos... but he also doesn't seem to be that educated on it. XD Maybe he needs to listen to the professionals like Mell.
I love Mel. She tells it like it is. I don’t like Brad he’s a bit too arrogant for me. I love how Mel came at him with facts to back everything up. Keep up the great work!!!
yeah i take anything he says with a grain of salt. i stopped watching him a couple years ago because he would say things that aren’t true and didn’t correct himself. and apparently he doesn’t have as much experience as he claims to have🤷🏽♀️
Brad mondo CONSTANTLY spreads misinformation about curly hair, it's so annoying like you can say you dont know how curly hair works. It's ok to be ignorant
IS it okay to be that ignorant if you're literally a hair-based youtuber? "I actually only care about rich white lady clients which classical cosmetology training gears itself towards, except now I've pivoted to influencer money without updating any of my educational biases, byeeeeeeee!" @@nica7747 How do you know? Where’s your proof? I’m not defending Brad in the least but like I said, where’s YOUR proof that he isn’t a licensed hairstylist?
@@Mothman_In_a_T-Pose very few licensed hair stylists are as versed in hair science as Mell, and even a modest understanding of that science is not required or necessary for one to become a licensed hair stylist. Most curly-hair specialists I've gone to still primarily follow their CGM training and use styling techniques they find on TikTok. The first one I went to 6 years ago made me read the DevaCurl handbook while she dyed my hair. Not all stylists can be pioneers like our mane girl Mell here, but that doesn't mean they're not sufficiently skilled to handle hair. Brad is probably good at what he does, he's just not a science guy nor does he do curly hair.

OK, as somebody with textured hair. I’ve literally never heard of this Brad Mondo person. But can I just say something? Shout out to Mel for teaching me everything I know about wavy curly hair/textured hair. But, I also feel like for me at least it depends on my hair length? For example, as of right now. My hair happens to be a pixie cut so I let it air dry because it’s shorter and the curls can handle that. But as a child, when I had a long thick curly hair down to my ass? There was no way I could let that air dry. It would literally take two days to dry. So I don’t know just food for thought? Anybody else?
I literally just watch Brad for entertainment like the fail videos. Not for real advice. I followed one of Mell’s tutorials and well she knows what she is talking about when it comes to curly hair🤷🏽♀️☝️
I don’t trust his dying advice either. Teenaged me got better results (and less damage) with box dye than I’ve seen him pull with his own line. Someone needs to slap the 30vol from his hands!
But the problem is that those two are inseparable! If he doesn’t know how to care for hair then he should not be dying it as it will suffer worse damage without a proper understanding of what to teach clients to do. If my hairstylist didn’t know how to care for bleached and damaged hair my hair would remain damaged because I didn’t know either! Before my recent appointment I thought all my bleach damaged hair needed was shampoo and conditioner and such, but no, I only know how to take care of my hair in its natural state.
How can you look at someone with curls like Mel's and say she's wrong? I don't want to discredit hair stylists with straight hair, but if I had a nickle for each time I went to a stylist who told me "I know how to style curly hair," I'd have the money to get my hair done by someone who actually knows what they're doing 😂 and, personally, I started following Mel's hair advice and noticed a SIGNIFICANT improvement in how my hair looks and feels, so I'd say she knows what she's talking about.
You’ll be surprised how many people don’t even know how to handle their own hair. I started cosmetology school and learned so much about my hair. That’s my guess.
It took me 31 years to know how to take care of my hair! And I only know how to do it now (still learning though) due to this amazing woman! After 2y of listening to her, my hair looks completely different!
I know right 😂 like her hair is beautiful lol why are they saying she’s not right? People should absolutely do research and read up what they can but to blindly believe that *everything* that is conventional is absolute and there aren’t exceptions especially when you can see it with your own eyes is very ridiculous and anti-scientific behavior.
I've met hair stylists with *double* the experience Brad has, who don't know s*it about curly hair.. So no surprise here. He probably has no idea that there are curly girls out there who wear a bog on their head every wash day. Bless him. And thank you for this video Mel, I hope more people see it! 🙏
Just gonna say when I stopped air drying my hair and went back to blow drying, it stopped breaking and falling out. 🤷♀️ Sorry Brad. Take a seat for this one.
My hair falls out in clumps & I’ve done everything imaginable. I’m even on hormones (I’m 46) & before all this I had amazing long thick hair/curls, so I’m devastated. AND I’m embarrassed to say after watching Mel’s video that I’m an “air dryer”. How long before you saw results if you don’t mind me asking?!🙏🏼
his 'a lot of research' was googling an afternoon - he mentions that later on. But not one afternoon on ONE subject but all the things mentioned in the tiktok videos he reviewed. His knowledge on textured hair is.. appalling. He should always disclaim "I have no expertise in this field".
I know that Brad has talked about how he isn’t super knowledgeable on curly hair in particular. I think this kind of further proves how curl education isn’t prevalent in the cosmetology world(which needs to change). Come on Brad! Invest in some curl education ✨🥰
@@RingletReina yeah 😭 like I get it if you arnt doing hair anymore or whatever but….realize you arnt an expert in it. You don’t correct a physics major when you haven’t even taken a class in it.
I am so sick of Brad Mondo nowadays. Almost all information he gives is essentially common sense, or lies manipulated to sound like the truth. His hair care advice is basically the most mediocre advice anyone can give, and the fact people genuinely follow and believe him is just mind blowing.
Love this!! 🙌🏼 I definitely agree that (safe) diffusing after scrunching out water with a hair towel is healthier than air drying hours on end with soaked hair.
Hey Gena! You were the first or second RUclipsr I watched when I started my curly hair journey a year ago, I’m still on my way but Idk I just wanted to say thanks for being one of my first inspirations
thank you for pushing back on Brad Mondo. Especially about air drying! My scalp was so messed up for so long b/c I was leaving my roots wet, sitting on my scalp for 7+ hours. As a result, i was getting flaking, build up, scalp soreness and even lesions and scabbing D; Now I hover diffuse the roots and let the ends hair dry and it helps so much.
If y'all really cared about facts and research a) you wouldn't be in youtube talking so seriously about hair products b) take that student loan and go to college lmao.

When he said "no one's walking around with soaking wet hair all day" I felt personally attacked, invalidated and totally invisible 😭😂 Brad literally MAKES CURLY HAIR PRODUCTS. Uhm sir, don't ignore us if u wanna benefit from us 🤑
Well, to give him a little credit, his comment was actually "no one's walking around with their hair soaking wet all day, every single day”, so I don't think he was targeting those of us who hair takes the whole day to dry, or stays wet all day. I think he literally was saying no one has hair that is soaking wet all the time, 24/7. With that said, I still think it's a very silly statement for him say, and a very ineffective point for his argument. He's talking in absolutes here, along side an unrealistic scenerio. He's basically stating that damage from air drying only ever happens when someones hair is soaking wet 24/7. With this logic, it's as though he feels that if you acknowledge that rediculos scenerio isnt a reality, than that must mean you also then agree that the idea of air drying being damaging to your hair is also not a reality. It's silly
If you are following cg, his products are ...not. Glycerin - too drying for some, in one conditioner, and many types of silicone in EVERY OTHER CONDITIONER. I can't use silicone of any sort without my hair drying to a crisp and splitting. There are farrrr better choices in that price range, and plenty cheaper too. Look at his hair. Do you think he knows what curlies need? 😅
@@ladysnowblood Then you seem to maybe need help more than you think cause um, that is not natural. I'm 45 and curly ass hair but no, all day? You need help.
I've followed all of your hair advice when I decided to embrace my wavy hair. It was damaged because of years of using a flat iron. I used sulfate free shampoo, switched to microfiber hair towels, switched to silk pillow cases and started using the hover method. I have to diffuse because even though my hair is fine, I have a lot of it and it stays wet for half a day. My hair has never been healthier and all I did was use your recommendations and advice (also a good haircut). Thank you for all you do for us! You're wonderful.
Brand mondo is THE straight hair enthusiast.. He really got me pissed off when he “dissed” volumed hair for weddings calling it tacky or something I can’t be bothered to check his “wording” but his point came thru, and THENNN he called the basic white girl hair “elegant” like wtf? am I supposed to change my genetics to please you
I used to love brad but when i saw a video of him dissing baby hairs ...which i really loooove i was like hummm wait a minute imma stop watching this dude
He dissed the hair of all the models which were all basic white girls so where are you coming from with the basic white girl and genetics BS…some of y’all just try to make it a race thing…
I have low porosity, never-treated or colored hair. I never heat styled from the time it became curly (puberty) until a couple years ago at age 29. I did my research (thank you!) and finally bought the Dyson. Your videos helped me realize how drying isn't evil and could actually be healthier in my situation! It has been so great for my hair health! It got rid of the mildewy smell and itchiness, decreased the damage, increased the shininess, and my curls are bouncier, more defined, and last longer!
Ill never forget when Brad switched mannequins after he did a box dye vs salon test and the box dye turned out better and he tried to hide it by lying. He also destroyed snitcherys hair 3 years ago. He worked for 2 years in his dads salon. He has not been doing hair for "10+" years like he claims. Lol. I do not believe a thing that comes out of his mouth tbh lol
Snitchery made a video afterwards saying her hair was already extremely damaged and that she told Brad she was already planning on shaving her head. So she told him to make her platinum blonde one more time before she did, even though he warned against it saying that it would extremely damage her hair. She was fully with it and knew what would happen and explained the miscommunication and how the viewers took it aside from how it really was.
Ooooh, the wig switch sounds interesting. I have used box dye of my family and my self all my life with usually great results, except some bad color choices for me. And waaaaaaaaay cheaper than a salon.
@@reysquadron7820 yeah he was trying to "prove" that stylists aren't BSing when they say pro dyes are better. But he failed. He used one of the better box dyes(I think it was colorsilk or Feria, both dyes I have consistent good results with personally) vs a meh pro formula. I've used pro and box dyes and the only thing that determines which I want is color choice.
@@ManesByMell I’d call it a Matcha-piece. It seriously looks like there are even more well timed cut ins than usual plus green screen for this one. Does she sleep? So good!
Haha, even Polish hair community is talking about this situation. We stand strong with you. A hairdresser is not a doctor; they don't go through years of biology and chemistry. Their experience in cutting hair is not everything, when it comes to hair care. A person capable of critical thinking, who has simple understanding of science, can be much better informed than a hairstylist. It's impossible to know everything about every hair type and that guy is very cocky, trying to build his authority by underlying years of experience, instead of offering good advice. I don't know why can't he focus on his expertise. On that topic, there are pieces of information that contest Brad's stories about his experience. He's an entertainer, foremost. It's a poor character trait, his huge pressure to be a figure of authority.
It’s just sad when someone with a lot of following like, Brad Mondo, shares false information without even trying to have a reliable source. I used to air dry all the time and ever since I found you and your tips, my hair feels so much healthier! I really hope there isn’t someone with curly hair, feeling lost and finding his type of misleading curly videos! You always kill it curly queen!
Him and Hyram have the kids hanging on their every word like they preach gospel. Who’s going to tell them they are just salesmen and are just for learning BASIC knowledge. I’m so mean I know. ;-)
The good thing is, from what I have seem, the majority of the comments on that video is about how he is wrong, so maybe some ppl will read them, do a bit more research, and start to question his advices
Maria, I look on the bright wide..Free publicity for Mel! Everyone with curls for days need to hear from Mel! He won't hurt her reputation at all. Just the opposite. Watch.
Before I found Manes by Mell I had wet hair for hours every two days! Brad needs to learn more about Curly hair or stop critiquing it. (he did so on a video on routines a few weeks back and it was just not good!)
Happy Texture Tuesday! Can't wait to watch this when I get out of class, but in the meantime I'll leave this thought: I don't trust Brad Mondo because he never does anything with curly hair on his channel. It's all about straight hair and straightened hair. Edit now that I've watched the video and seen the rest of the TikTok: I'm not convinced Brad Mondo knows what a diffuser is, so I'm not surprised he thinks blow drying is the more damaging thing and cut Mell's video short. Also, mayhaps I should buy a dryer and diffuser. Anyone in the comments got any low-cost recommendations? I'm a university student who's a bit cash-strapped.
Yeah! I was so suspicious of that too! While watching his video I did a whole double take. He barely does curly hair also mel is a professional and went to school for it while brad to my information has not.
I had the John Freida Frizz Ease Salon Shine Hair Dryer for YEARS (I had to look up the name 😆) and it’s around $25-$30. I loved that blow-dryer so much !! I also really like Conair blow dryers, and some come with a diffuser, but you can always get a low-cost universal attachment. I personally am not a huge fan of the Revlon blow dryer and diffuser, but it has really great reviews, so that one is definitely worth checking out. I hope this was helpful 😊
Wait, Brad Mondo doesn't understand curly hair? Color me shocked. 😅 But for real, I'm always gonna trust someone who cites their sources over someone who's argument is "come on, that doesn't make sense."
The day Brad grows beautifully curly hair will be the day I ever take hair advice from him… which will never be in this lifetime. You go Mel! Love you 👑🤍
I am a guy who has had a military buzz cut the past 30 years, and am growing out my hair for the first time ever, during covid(2A or 2B waves/fine hair). Is Brad supposed to be an expert? Even me as a total noob about hair can tell that he is wrong. Mell(and a few other youtubers) have been a wealth of info. I would have probably got frustrated and cut my hair it it weren't for all of you, and I listened to someone like Brad.
I screamed when I saw this video. I'm living for it. Brad Mondo has NO clue about kinky/curly hair, and he CONSTANTLY keeps doing this despite EVERY video he does this in being swamped with comments about how clueless he is. It's infuriating. I don't wanna say "typical white dude," buuuuuuuuut... (and that's speaking as a white person) My hair is fine, wavy, and not nearly as thick as it used to be as a kid... and it takes hours and hours to air dry. If I have to go to bed in the middle of that? Game over, it'll be wet in the morning. If I braid it wet? That would take a day at least. I cannot imagine curlier hair than mine trying to air dry. I air dried for ages because I was convinced the blow dryer would damage it. Now my blow dryer with the diffuser is my bestie.
This is not a defense of him, but the industry as a whole disregards kinky and curly hair. He has no incentive to change. It’s infuriating. Hair care for me is not the same experience as hair care for my straight and wavy friends
Honestly I haven’t respected Brad mondo as a hairstylist since he bungled his salon dye vs drug store/box dye “experiment”. TLDR he didn’t label the mannequin head and mistook the box for the salon professional and vice versa, saying that the box looked better and didn’t even correct it during editing or mention it at all. Not hate on him and I never discouraged my clients not to watch him when they say they do, I also used to love his reaction videos, I just don’t trust his advice.
Brad Mondo reminds me of about 99% of the hairdressers I've encountered in my life. A hairdresser with NO clue on what to do or how to look after curly hair. Without channels like yours, I'd be so lost! Love your work 💝
I think it's also important to note in that study that they shampooed the hair with a solution of 1% SDS (another name for sodium laurel sulfate), and then dried it, and that was it. There were no emollients nor silicones nor humectants in the shampoo and there was no conditioner nor leave in for this process. Which is extremely unlike most people's process. I actually don't necessarily doubt that leaving your hair wet for long periods of time is somehow problematic, but I don't think this study by itself can substantiate precisely why or by how much. I hope to see it repeated with a more modern lens, though.
Yeah, that seems like a poor research design. Also it doesn’t look like more recent research has been done to validate the results of that study or the other studies listed. Like you said more research has to be done to make the claim that air drying your hair is damaging. Honestly I just feel like people should do whatever works best for their hair. If air drying or heat styling keeps your healthy than do either.
Yeah I read alot of derm medical journals. Looking at Mel’s references most of the research was done on Asian and Caucasian hair. Which is predominantly straight. The research which shows the CMC damage doesn’t signify anything from Curly hair?
Exactly! Using just one study paper really isn't enough for her to say she is right and his is wrong, doesn't look great they he never listed his research but that's not to say his people hadn't collected several studies to support his claim. Also her study was 10 years old, newer research needs to be reviewed
@@Absurdity101 yes! Yours and @Realitycheck1993 points about the actual methods of the study are extremely important and highlight the need to look at the entire study and not just a click bait tag line. People love to say "research shows" and think that makes what they are saying impervious to any objections.
I'm pretty sure they used that shampoo to ensure that there were no extraneous factors convaluting the results (eg one conditioner working better on one person vs another).
I enjoy watching Brad for his expressive reactions, but I was never going to him for any curly hair advice. No offense, Mr. Mondo, if you haven’t dealt with the struggle that is natural curls, you can’t sit with us 🤷🏻♀️ 🤣
It's not even like he went to get any curly hair education to learn how to cut and style curly hair with curly hair products not with straight irons...🙄
Love the fact you cited your research and it came from a legit journal. That’s why we need scientific studies, bc ppl tend to generalize from a perspective that’s only based on their personal experience, and studies help us understand the topic more globally and factually, removing biases and misinformation. Love the education!!!
Brad Mondo man-splaining curly hair with clearly very little actual knowledge of curly hair deserves a dismissive "bless your heart" with a chuckle......
I finally understand why my hair stylist isn't a fan of Brad's content. His counter-argument completely misconstrued Mel's statements. It sounds like he didn't even read the research because the Korean study says damage of the cell membrane was observed on hair that took 2 hours to air dry. It doesn't even take all day! Anyways, I've been loving Mel's content for years. This has been so informative as always! Thank you for sharing!
Not the first time I've disagreed with Brad, particularly on curly topics🤷♀️, noting that I learned pretty much everything I know from you😜. He seems to be primarily a colorist? Whatever, you're still my trusted authority on curly styling and hair health! The credentials, the source citing, the scientify, you earn that trust! 💖
I actually came from a Brad Mondo video right now and people in the comments sent me here. My daughter has curly hair (a level down from Mell's) and the thickness is coming in finally. I've always struggled to find products and routines because her hair was thin and weighed down the curls. Now that they're thickening her curls are forming towards her roots and I'm so excited! I'm researching as much as I can to learn for myself and teach her how to do her own hair. She turns 8 on Friday and is pretty independent already and we just got her a diffuser. 🤞 I have thin, wavy hair so it's all new to me. Can't wait to take this hair journey with her.
Love that comeback with KNOWLEDGE! 👏🏾 how he even dared to call you a liar when you clearly stated the science and are a CURLY hair specialist is beyond me
Yes peer reviewed academic journals!! So excited to see people actually using legit research and not opinions passed off as fact. My curly hair will take hours to air dry and I can blow dry my hair for 30 minutes and it’ll still be damp after. I used to only let my hair air dry not because I thought blow drying was more damaging but I never liked how my hair turned out (so much frizz and no definition) but then I saw how Mell does it (the hover diffuse!) and not I can get definition and dry hair!
Respectfully, I don't appreciate Brad's reactions when it comes to curly hair and I'd always rather listen to someone who is indeed a curly hair specialist. Don't get me wrong, Brad is a great hair stylist, but it's obvious he's not specialized in curly hair.
I've never watched him, with the exception of maybe a few minutes of a video or two. He comes across as one of those people who is more obsessed with being famous, than he is with being an effective hair instructor.
I believe in you 100%, my curls have improved since I began following you. What Brad says or think doesn’t matter to me, he knows nothing about curly hair.
It's things like this, as well as his reactions to things in India's routine, that make me REALLY want him to collaborate with someone like you. Because I've noticed MOST pros who aren't specific to curly hair....don't actually know anything about curly hair and it's differences to other hair types. Thankful for creators like you who share the facts😍
So glad you made this. I like Brad but his constant misunderstanding of textured hair drives me up the wall. He has such a big platform, he should be spreading the right information.
I love how you respectfully handled the situation of someone calling you out and your main goal was to educate not hate. A true role model influencer . I love you Mell . 👏👏❤❤
My hair was falling out; I had bald patches when I normally have a ton of hair. My dermatologist suggested I stop air drying and haven't had a single issue since
I’m always going to believe the person with curly hair, especially Mel as she’s a professional hairdresser with the best head of curly hair! The “proof is in the pudding” as her coif always looks amazing and she fully explained and demo-ed her methods.
@@froufroudeluxe I believe she said she already planned to shave her hair so she wanted to get it bleach just to mess around with it before she did, but he did massively screw up while doing it. So she didn't shave it just bc of what he did.
Damn, I learned something today. I know keeping your hair wet is terrible for your scalp. Thank you for this video. For a girl that is embracing her natural hair, I needed this.
I am waiting for the day when people finally realize, that not only is Brad no "hair god" he doesn't even know that much about hair , let it be curly or straight. He has been repeating the same 3 things in his videos for years now, and somehow people are still stunned by it😀 i will never understand...
ALL I have to say is... Brad has a lot to learn from you, Mell! He is definitely not a textured hair specialist, but always talks about wanting to learn more and more so hopefully y'all can collab!
I had never diffuse dried my hair until a month ago, always air drying. It was pain: all day long to dry it, and meh results overall. When I started diffuse drying, on the other hand, everything has changed: shinier, softer and I can get rid off the cast sooner and enjoy the day. By the way, my hair is longer than in the photo. Your content is wonderful! Keep up the good work. I'd rather listen to you, who actually has curly hair and understands it, than a person whose hair is not even curly, and still states something that's bs.
So I’m still mid video, it just seems to me that Brad didn’t do his research here. All I can think is, he’s clearly never had wet roots for 6 hours! He cherry picks a video, then injects his opinion, which, perhaps contrary to what he thinks, is not fact. As always I am impressed with your videos, cause I love information imparting in an amusing manner. Also #purplefreaksunite
Brads comment section under his video is filled with support for Mel. I’m so proud of this community for keeping it respectful for educating others. I hope she sees it

can i be honest? im a hairdresser too, and i never thought this guy was famous because he is a good hairdresser. he is a good entertainer who happens to be a hairdresser, and uses that to his favor, but a lot of the "tips" he gives are straight up bullshit. since hair is so subjective and different to every person, his tips makes it look like a one size fits all
maybe im more pissed off than everyone else at him because i am a curly girl and i remember he said once in a video "you wouldn't want your curls clumpy and hard like this mess right here" while talking about the lil' drills curly girls do in their hair, kind of the ones op have in this video 😭 has been like 3 years and still doesn't sit right with me
I caught onto his bullshit when he made a video saying NOBODY needs more than a coin-sized dollop of shampoo to properly clean your hair.
I agree unless I know they know what they’re doing they don’t understand curly hair is very different from straight or slightly wavy hair
THIS!!! I had my hair messed up so many times because people did not know how to handle it
I completely understand.
What a ridiculous statement
Brad: “Nobody walks around with wet hair all day.”
Curly hair people: 👁👄👁
Um, I have curly ass hair and no, if you are walking around with it all day you need a new routine.
I think it is HILARIOUS that everyone here seems to think "curly hair" means women of color. hahahaha Fuck. Girls, nah, you can be white ass like me and have plenty of issues with your curly hair.
I’m confused why she thought that would make a difference 😅
Yea I also only do my hair at home cause I could never trust a person with straight hair to do mine! Sure there are some that know about curly hair but the majority don’t. Especially where I live, it’s all white tourist ladies with their blonde balayage
I don't trust anyone with my hair, even the so called experts in curly hair... at least here in my city in Brazil. I once had one do a bob on me. It was perfect. When I went back to redo the cut, she left me with a Dart Vader Helmet.
What brand color do you use? Thanks!

Same! Just seeing his curly hair products demoed on his page already told me that was not gonna work for me.
Preach 😏
Not sure that's why your scalp was on fire. I've been air drying my hair for yeeeaaaars, I blow dry it basically 3-4 times a year. I've never had scalp problems. (But I also don't go to bed with wet hair)
Edit: now that I think of it, I also don't apply any products after washing my hair (the only thing I put while my hair is still super wet is argan oil, and that's literally it). It does make sense that having your scalp wet for long while having products on wouldn't be good. Meaning... what I said should be true, it's the products that are the problem (or the product + time combo). But also, unlike I thi k most people, I also towel "dry" my scalp, and it doesn't take too long for it to dry 🤔
Edit#2: now I also remembered that the only time my scalp was actually itchy *was* after blow drying it. And I do it the "Mel way" and low-heat, so idk...

Absolutely!!! I would actually love him to stop covering hair with texture if this is going to be his responses. It’s embarrassing and feels even more marginalizing.
If my hairstylist didn’t know how to care for bleached and damaged hair my hair would remain damaged because I didn’t know either! thank you for pushing back on Brad Mondo.
Can we just collectively agree that the “research” brad did was just a quick google search?

When he said "no one's walking around with soaking wet hair all day" I felt personally attacked, invalidated and totally invisible 😭😂
Brad literally MAKES CURLY HAIR PRODUCTS.
It's silly
I'm 41 and have spent most of my life walking around w wet hair. 😂
damn saying that while he makes curly hair products??? the audacity 😭😭

Oooh, I just looked up the snitchery video. Apparently he did everything he tells other people NOT to do
Snitchery made a video afterwards saying her hair was already extremely damaged and that she told Brad she was already planning on shaving her head.

He once did type 4 hair hair and it was a frizzy mess that he thought was so cute I literally cackled at him lol 😂😂
I have seen several sketchy things he has done and wondered why the hell people think he knows what he is doing
Yeah! I was so suspicious of that too! While watching his video I did a whole double take. He barely does curly hair also mel is a professional and went to school for it while brad to my information has not.
Or its always like a cliff note XD like here are a million ways and advice for straight hair... oh yeah and a sentence for you curly haired people
I had the John Freida Frizz Ease Salon Shine Hair Dryer for YEARS (I had to look up the name 😆) and it’s around $25-$30.
But for real, I'm always gonna trust someone who cites their sources over someone who's argument is "come on, that doesn't make sense."

Yes because personal opinions are not facts. That’s what he was attempting to do here. Failed big time.
Yes King 🤴🏽 Grow that beautiful hair 🤩
Yes! I thought the same thing! I would have given up and DID give up in my hair for a while because of hairstylists like him!
(and that's speaking as a white person)
My hair is fine, wavy, and not nearly as thick as it used to be as a kid... and it takes hours and hours to air dry.
Love your work 💝
it’s the reason why im a hairdresser! I have curly hair and no one knows how to do it. So i said fk it i’ll learn myself
Love the education!!!

Absolutely!!!!
Definitely feels like mansplaining.

I had never diffuse dried my hair until a month ago, always air drying. It was pain: all day long to dry it, and meh results overall.
