      Diablo from How Not to Summon a Demon Lord is also role-playing as a Demon Lord but unlike Overlord, he doesn't want to kill anyone and will do his best to avoid it. When he does eventually kill, he feels bad about it even though he knows he had no choice. Overlord kills about as casually as a man swatting flies.

    • @loke6664
      @loke6664 Год назад +3

      I dunno if that is true. He certainly gets better at tricking Demiurge or Albedo to explain their plans for him but he is still kinda stupid. Like when he makes a peace deal with the Empire (is it in book 8 or 9?) because he thinks that is a good idea while Demiurge thinks it is a brilliant trap since there is zero chance of the Empire ever keeping such a peace deal.
      I love them, but Ainz isn't the sharpest crayon in the box exactly, he constantly tries to solve his problems by using his own work experience as a salesman and tries to act like he thinks his boss would have acted.
      Yeah, he has some character development and his motivation is always to honor and try to find his old guildmates which seems to be the closest to friends he ever had.
      That is really what makes the books so brilliant, all other "cheat Isekai" novels and animes have a Mary Sue hero who always succeed, is super smart, use real world knowledge to win and have every girl fall in love with him. Overlord is making fun of all that and have the setup similar but Ainz is kinda a clutz who pretends he is a Mary Sue and is insanely scared that one of his far more capable henchmen will realize who he really is and take over.
      In the books, it is pretty clear that all the floor guardians have similar combat abilities to Ainz and are probably all smarter then him too, particularly Demiurge and Albedo but they think he is some all powerful God that can't be wrong and it is their scripted backgrounds that are the only reason they worship him so much.
      There are so many fun characters in the books too all with their own personalities while most Isekais have a few well made characters with the rest just being cardboard cut outs. I mean, a lot of them could have had their own anime show, like the Blue roses for instance, most fantasy shows have less developed main characters then them and they are basically just extras here. Normally that would make the books rather hard to read since so many side characters are usually annoying but Overlord somehow pulls it off.

    Ainz isn't actually a total loser. As shown in the Shalltear fight, he is actually EXTREMELY competent when it comes to PvP. that skill just isn't particularly relevant in most scenarios.

    • @MrDuckFIN
      @MrDuckFIN 5 лет назад +329

      While i agree that Ainz isn't a loser, calling him *extremely competent* is really stretching the extend of his abilities as seen in the show. While it's fun to think that Ainz is a strategic genius for winning against Shalltear because Shalltear is stat-wise better than him, she was still at a massive disadvantage. All Ainz did was play to the obvious strengths that the situation lended him.

    • @kylerivera3470
      @kylerivera3470 5 лет назад +732

      If you read the LNs, it mentions that Ains did a lot of PvP, and was really good at it. He may not have been the best (that title goes to Touch Me), but he was still competitive. After all, he was the guild-master for one of the top guilds that focused on PvP.
      Also, what do you mean Shalltear was at a disadvantage? First of all, the only advantage you gave (that her stats are better) isn't really true. Granted, I don't know/remember the specific total stats, however, it is safe too assume that they are roughly the same in total stats. Shalltear's advantage arises in the DISTRIBUTION of stats. In a 1v1 fight, a warrior/melee class will usually have the advantage over a magic class since the magician often relies on others to protect them while they deal damage. Add on to that the fact that Shalltear had an elemental advantage over Ains (Holy is strong against undead) and the fact that Ains' specialty magic isn't very effective against her (Undeads are immune to instant death spells and a lot of status effects. Also his ability to summon undead minions would just end up healing her due to the Pipette Lance).Ains was 100% at a disadvantage.
      Finally, you said that "All Ainz did was play to the obvious strengths that the situation lended him", but that is severely dumbing down what he did. First of all, the situation didn't give him really any inherent advantages. It gave him a few openings to take advantage of, but none that gave him an upper hand just by using them. Secondly, the openings weren't particularly obvious to someone who isn't extremely familiar with both the game and PvP combat. Someone who isn't familiar with both of those would have extreme difficulty figuring them out, at least without fighting her first (which isn't really an option). Finally, even if you are able to identify any openings to attack, actually putting your plan into action can be surprisingly difficult.
      The battle wasn't easy by any means and was extremely disadvantageous for Ains, the only reason it looked easy was because Ains was able to handle it without too much difficulty. However, you shouldn't mistake that with the battle being easy. It is just that, when a skilled person does something difficult, it can look easier than it actually is. Just try watching a top speed-runner play a difficult platformer (like Super Meat Boy or Celeste) then try it for yourself. You'll see what I mean then.

      @@kylerivera3470
      I did read the light novels,and i remember that it was mentioned that Ainz's build was more intended for roleplay while Shalltear was combat minmaxed.
      Shalltear being brainwashed lent Ainz several huge advantages over shalltear:
      1. Ainz could prepare for potentially as long as he wanted and initiate battle. Shalltear was constrained to standing idle in a single spot until provoked.
      2. Ainz didn't have to fully commit to battle, he had the ability to retreat. Shalltear, due to the brainwash AI, would fight to the death.
      3. Ainz had access to all of the resources of Nazarick. Shalltear had only her own inventory.
      4. Ainz had plenty of access regarding information about Shalltear's skillset and equipment. Shalltear had fair knowledge about Ainz's weaknesses but which is entirely negated by points 1 & 3.
      I think these 4 points make their fight much less impressive as it is at first glance.
      Shalltear was in many ways a direct counter to Ainz, but i feel it was negated by Ainz in the 2nd phase of battle by him switching between classes to respond appropriately to Shalltear, something which couldn't have been possible without the preparation leverage he had. In 1st phase of battle he was also able to lighten Shalltear's class advantage by knowing her strengths and getting proper equipment from Nazarick to counter it.
      I never said that the fight was easy, or that Ainz didn't have to put any thought into it (well, he actually wouldn't have if he had leveraged the strength of the guardians.) All i said was that you're giving too much credit for Ainz winning an obviously pitched battle.

    • @kylerivera3470
      @kylerivera3470 5 лет назад +272

      Those 4 points aren't actually as big of advantages as you make them sound
      1. This one is actually a decent advantage except that it requires Ains to be able to accurately predict and/or guide the battle in the direction he wants to take advantage of it, which can be surprisingly difficult.
      2. Just because he theoretically could retreat, doesn't necessarily make it an advantage. Plus, with the possibility of an enemy watching the battle, retreat isn't really a good option since it would effectively give them information for free.
      3. Ains may have had access to Nazarick's resources, however he can't just use them all willy nilly due to the potential unknown enemy.
      4. Information gathering is an integral part of PvP as stated in the LNs. Shalltear was at a bit of a handicap, however Ains still had to research and plan around all of Shalltear's abilities.
      The primary mistake you are making here is that you are assuming that PvP starts at the same time as the battle, however,that is wrong. PvP starts when one side plans to attack the other, and includes all of the planning to ensure that you win the fight. If you think the battle was "obviously pitched" then that is actually a statement in favor of Ains because that battle wasn't naturally in his favor, he MADE it that way. It's the type of thing that may look simple in hindsight, but isn't that easy to do in the moment. I'm not saying Ains' battle skills are particularly excellent (although they do have to be pretty good), I'm saying that the combination of his planning ability and the ability to put those plans in action (at least when concerning PvP) is top tier. One final thing, note how Ains was calm throughout most of the Shalltear fight. He clearly had room to spare within the fight. In other words, he showed a lot of ability with the Shalltear fight, and yet he still probably could do better. After all, if there was a real threat he WOULD mobilize the guardians, but the fact that he didn't shows his confidence.

    I think Ainz deserves more credit. He is actually an extremely competent combat strategist, which can be seen on multiple occasions, and makes use of military tactics which he learned from his fellow guild member. Later in the light novels, we see his diction is impressive and fits his position, and his logic is actually quite good. It makes me wonder how he can be so smart in some ways and so clueless in others...
    Anyway, Sagusa Ainz-sama!

    • @Warhamer116
      @Warhamer116 5 лет назад +208

      the cluelessness likely comes from 'a leader is a leader is a leader'-type mindset in which a brilliant leader in one type can be slotted into another without hitch- a general is a leader, a captain is a leader, a civil engineer is a leader, a logistics manager is a leader, a city council president is a leader. Each of those are leaders, smart in their own ways, but placing a captain into the role of a civil engineer or a general to role of city council president might not end well: The captain might be able to lead the construction crew, but could he plan and calculate materials and structure to ensure bridges, roads, water infrastructure and power distribution in a way that won't end up in flames? Would a general understand the complex web of social developement and incentive-based command infrastructure without problems?
      What I'm saying is that Ainz is a brilliant captain, but poor engineer, and poor council president.

He kills humans, overthrows kingdoms, causes massacres. He is literally a lich king. From Runescape to DuelingNetwork to DOTA2, people have left me as the last person in said games to do real life stuff and never came back. • @chrishubbard64
    @chrishubbard64 3 года назад +381

    Something I wanted to add. One of my favorite things about Overlord is how morally ambiguous it can be. Yes you have straight up sadists like demiurge and solution, but in general the stuff ainz does becomes good or evil based on perspective. Think about it. had the lizardman arc been covered differently. As in it focused on cocyutus and his efforts to arrange a campaign against the lizardmen tribe and spent almost no time showing us what decent people they were, we wouldnt have batted an eye at the undead army swarming their forces. We would have been UPSET that the lich got killed crying out to his master. But because we got to see the lizards portrayed as people who were decent and deserved to live, we disliked the war.
    Same for the invasion of nazarick. The author went out of his way to make all (but one) of the adventurers seem like decent people just making a living, with dreams and goals and wanting to help people. They still broke into nazarick, tried to loot it to the bedrock, and were determined to murder anything they saw in there that was "alive" without any investigation whatsoever. Yeah it was a setup but ainz even gave them chances to back out, he checked them out himself to see if any were worth saving by questioning their purpose in taking this job and so forth. He would have likely spared some of them had they shown their honorable and good side to him. But because WE got to know them personally, the horrible fates of the invaders was far more shocking than it would have been had the first time we saw them been when they busted down the door and started invading.

    I think that the strenght of shows like OPM or Overlord, when it comes to how they handle their OP characters, is how they do not focus too much time on them. Instead of always following the MC, most of the show is spent concentrating on the other character that are introduced, and the effect our MC has on them. Alongside how the world change and react accordingly to the rise of this new power (this part is less proeminent in OPM though).

    1. A rich, complex world filled to the brim with memorable characters.
    2. The dark comedy that is going on both directly and through subtext (eg the White Knight Climb, loyal to his Mistress the Golden Princess, turns out to be just a dog/sex-toy of sorts to the sociopathic genius that the Princess actually is).

    One of the bigger positives in Overlord for me is the way they do the world-building. It's a world that feels real. There's a huge cast of heroes in their own situations having their own adventurers. It's a world that the main characters happen to find themselves in, not a world that only exists to make the main characters look good.
    I also didn't think the "trapped in another world" idea that Overlord has was an especially overpopulated genre. I watched Dot Hack Sign back in the day, read some of the light novels for it, and then saw Overlord and read all the Overlord Light Novels. I did watch the first few episodes of Log Horizon, but it didn't have the right kind of melancholic isolation and searching for something tone I liked so much about Overlord, so it didn't grab me.

      To answer your question, the reason as to why Log Horizon was more reputed and acclaimed than some other isekai anime is that not only did it take off an interesting twist in it, but it also had a rather interesting cast and main character that all had their strengths and weaknesses, with a dash of some likeable personalities.
      Also, what? As the anime Re:Zero has splendidly shown us, being unable to die when you are killed does not at all take away the tension. The tension might be lessened to a degree, but Log Horizon has also given some decent cons to being able to respawn and has displayed other ways to get us even slightly worried. It's not so muuch as the threat of dying as it is the threat of failing over and over again, and with the fact that you can kidnapping and torture become more heinous with respawning in play, and with losing memories everytime you respawn, and with the fact that the now living npcs can't respawn themselves, well, there's a lot of tension if you look at it.
      With the mcs plans being boring, well, that's more on your persobal preference, I guess, because I myself enjoyed it, and I know some of my friends that disagree and agree with me. But it being convoluted? I don't know about that, since Log Horizon also had the same world building charm that overlord has now, and it thoroughly explained how the mc manipulated the now guild's game mechanics and several others for it to benefit him. Hell, just the reactions from youtubers who watched log horizon did their usual "OOOH!" moment when the mc revealed just what he had done, signifying they knew just what he had done.
      As for Overlord, its threat of death is basically non existent. Ainz, as per usual, has plowed through most of his opponents with contemptuous ease(excluding shalltear) and not one moment do we truly fear for his life or his plans because he's solidified himself as this being that's just so above everyone in this new world, even to his own subordinates. Even the new potential rival chick to Ainz was revealed to, while having the power to defeat shalltear with her weapons, be inferior to shalltear in physical strength itself. Ainz is the slightly toned down Mary sue, given the fanatically loyal companions, admiring locals of the new world, terror of most of his incompetent, difficult to sympathize with enemies, impregnable, illogically unfair underground fortress, and the extreme power that made some of the religions in the new world liken him with their old skeleton god of death. Even the light novels have yet to give him a challenge that would pose as a threat to his himself and his guild, and even if one does show up, the amount of overpowered items and spells Ainz, like TGOALID, would be enough that unless there's direct divine intervention, there's no feasible way that either Ainz or Nazarick would fall with how much they can play.
      But yes, the Overlord worldbuilding is a fascinating aspect of the show and is rather enjoyable.

      Fellow man "unless there's direct divine intervention, there's no feasible way that either Ainz or Nazarick would fall" To be absolutely fair, there ARE the World class spells and items that for all practical purposes could be considered Divine Intervention since they literally have the power to re-write the world. Not that your wrong in saying there's no way Ainz and Nazarick won't loose but still.

    One of the things i think really helps Overlord, Is the fact that it takes place, not in the fantasy game world Ainz know like the back of his hand, but in a new world that he and his minions know nothing about.
    So while it is always clear that they are much stronger than everyone else, there are also those little hints, that he isn't the first overpowered mofo to appear in this world, and that all the others that was transported there ended up being killed, despite being so overpowered

    • @xKheda
      @xKheda 6 лет назад +34

      Whats even more is that you are unsure about those hints as well, the same as the way momonga and the guardians are unsure that they know everything about this world. (The Thirteen Heroes? Were some or none of them players, what kind of power DID they have to take on the demon gods? And how powerful were the demon gods?? Were the Greed Kings players as well?) We have to piece it together from tidbits of character conversation and thoughts who themselves only have second hand info from word of mouth from hundreds of years ago in their world's history.
      The only surefire player activity in the past is from the Slain Theocracy with godkin and all that. And yeah how did those players die? (i personally think they just played human characters and such died of natural causes eventually. As players that pick the races as the PCs of Ainz Ooal Gown did are looked down upon and can be bullied i think its pretty likely)

How he's aware his character isn't minmaxxed (compared to other Yggdrasil players) so he's constantly paranoid about finding another players.

    I think part of Overlord's charm is the fact that Momonga/Ainz has a very clear explanation for his being so OP, and on top of that it shows that he's often floundering and trying to figure out what's going on. You can see that he often has bouts of panic interspersed with "ok, I'm going to pretend I know what's going on" that adds humor and humanity to his character.

      +zenox bagaan You know, I initially liked SAO...but then it got really bad. The idea was interesting, but I think Log Horizon and Overlord did a lot better with how they handled the "got trapped in a game" concept. They were more realistic (Overlord's "what the hell just happened?" reaction and Log Horizon's depiction of so many characters just getting depressed or going crazy...) SAO comes off as kinda bland in comparison (not to mention the over-the-top main character who was just plain boring.)

Whit Ainz-sama he is able to make a much more realistic and plot rich decision because of it

    I love how Overlord brings up nearly ever hero trope (the plucky team of adventurers, the lone swordsman trying to redeem himself, the loyal street rat turned knight, the straight up legendary hero group trying to rescue the kingdom, the outcast member of a community who unites the tribes to face an overwhelming, encroaching evil, etc) and a number of fantasy villain tropes (the necromancer, the sadistic butcher bitch, the "Great Beast of the Forest", the shadowy society that's secretly controlling the kingdom, slavers, etc.)...
    And then just casually and indiscriminately tramples all over them. Not as tropes, mind. But as in they're all dead 20 minutes into the episode introducing them.
    I'm a writer myself, and this appeals to that cruel, sadistic part of me that just loves seeing worlds built up just so everything can be set on fire.

    An interesting thing about this series is that everyone has a story. Even if a character has no impact on the main story, he still has lived an entire life. I'm thinking about the Undying King Davernoc (the lich among the 8 fingers). His story was not developed in the anime, but in the book it was. Sebas was arming the punch that was going to end Davernoc, then we have several pages about Davernoc and his story, how he came to be one of the 8 fingers. Then, Sebas punch lands and Davernoc dies.
    These kinds of things are important and make the story compelling because every time a character is killed, we do get the feeling that it was an actual person who was killed and not just some random extra.

    You're so right about the light novels. They do what an anime cannot. You really get into the characters heads on a totally different level. It's impossible to do in an anime because much of it is internal, and descriptive.
    And I love it all the more.

      @Yal_Rathol 6 лет назад

      bustoo it's not difficult to make a skeleton show emotions, but if you're going to do so, you'll have to concede something, either they're going to keep looking like a skeleton, or they're going to look like a rubber doll and emote.
      the light novel has it easier, because it just has to say "they got the impression his skull was smiling" and then leave it to your imagination.

The idea of not being able to be in contact with them really bothered me because I felt that way when I lost contact with some friends when playing games. Quick correction, the man who was playing as Momonga wasn't your typical socially awkward guy who spends all his time in an MMO. A rule for joining Ainz Ooal Gown (originally the name of the clan before Momonga took on the name of Ainz for himself) was that everyone had to be fully functioning members of society with a life outside the game. It had very few if any students and many members weren't available at times due to varying job schedules.
    Also I kind of thought it was clear from the get go that the Lizard men were fighting Nazaric.

So at least on some level he recognizes them as real people, its just his focus is on whats best for HIS people. And you have to admit, so far his people have been doing very well for themselves under his leadership. The lizardmen are a united and far more self sufficient and technologically advanced group than they were before he showed up, carne village only survived due to him and ever since he took them under his protection they have grown stronger and larger and better all the time. The light novel this series is based on is a D&D players dream. It's packed full of so many little tidbits that any avid D&D fan will recognize. It's great. Also you get to see so much more detail of every character and their inner monologue. The scene were Sebas kills the Eight Fingers is hilarious. It goes into excruciating detail about each members backstories and how skilled they are before ending every description with "However..." And then Sebas just murders them instantly.

    • @Lylantares
      @Lylantares 6 лет назад +3

      There are also so many details that got pulled straight out of D&D. Spell descriptions like the 6th level divine spell [Heal] or the 1st level floating disc, the notion that potions are more expensive than scrolls because everyone can use them (not needing to be a spallcaster or skilled in use magic device), the whole design of Cocytus (who is a straight-up Gelugon or Ice Devil). Or the dancing weapon quality.
      And yeah, I loved the "However" section. Sebas is literally a "what if XY happened to be 'born' in another world" for one of our RPG characters, matching said characters' personality and original profession 100%. (If you consider the fact that Sebas is ~5 years old and the other one is 500y+)

  • @narutardkyuubi
    @narutardkyuubi 6 лет назад +16

    I love Overlord for 3 reasons!
    1) The characters:
    Yeah, it's already been mentioned, but the characters are fun to observe. The characters from Nazerick, who would normally been goons or *MAYBE* a mook lieutenant and die off in five minutes are established characters and have fantastic interactions. Each Nazerick character (with some exceptions, and those are explicitly mentioned in-universe) was carefully created and it's a joy to see them in action.
    2) The world:
    The New World is an interesting medieval fantasy setup. There's several independent nations and kingdoms that all jockey for control and power; each has their own ideologies and values, and a lot of them have independent motives for their actions. This gives a very organic feel to the political power struggles and allows the plot to proceed even without overt actions from the protagonist. As an aside, this also ALLOWS for Ainz to actually perform subtle acts of subterfuge and manipulation effectively. 2D cutouts are very boring to see manipulated, after all.
    3) Deconstruction:
    The story deconstructs a common RPG mechanic (and fiction trope) by playing it out realistically. The OP main character. Ainz and Nazerick are far stronger than anything shown in the New World. The denizens are the New World are basically scared out of their minds when they realize the sheer magnitude of power that Nazerick holds. It's also an amusing play of a situation; in RPGs, most end-game players will have stockpiled scores of legendary weapons, items and magics and be overwhelmingly strong/smart/talented compared to the average NPC, but they can't actually use any of that to effect the world outside of completing the plot. When Ainz and Nazerick show up, they can, in fact, change the world around them in a disturbingly easy degree due to the aforementioned. Though the Deconstruction also plays it out realistically; the humans start adapting, to a certain extent. Nphrea is able to concoct a purple potion (implied to be far superior to the blue healing potions, though still inferior to Nazerick's red potions) due to researching and analyzing a red potion that Ainz handed out to someone else. Enri manages to get more use out of the goblin horn, Brain improves his swordsmanship and becomes capable of cutting Shalltear's fingernail, etc.

    Speaking exclusively for myself, the parts of Overlord that I like is the interactions between the Nazarick floor bosses because it’s this fun juxtaposition of them legitimately being horrible villains who’d commit unspeakable atrocities without batting an eye while simultaneously having a heartwarming devotion and care for one another. The fact that they’re the ones who keep unknowingly peer pressuring their boss into committing atrocities is darkly funny
    Also, one of the side characters that I find particularly enjoyable is Enri Emmot. Like Momonga, she has underlings convinced of her overwhelming strength while realistically the ogres and goblin army under her command are much more powerful in a straight fight. She has realistic anxieties and insecurities surrounding this position but I think she grows into her own as a leader when given the opportunity

      the way I found it was a domino effect. I got Crunchyroll purely because I wanted to watch Persona 5 the Animation. When that was finished, eventually Stage Builder came to Smash Bros Ultimate. I saw the Aqua stage and eventually found out where it's from. I watched KonoSuba Season 1 and enjoyed. Eventually, I found Isekai Quartet and was interested. So I balanced out a schedule to simultaneously watch and finish KonoSuba (restarted Season 1 and started Season 2), Overlord, Re:Zero, and Youjo Senki. After that, I watched Isekai Quartet and was familiar with all those memorable characters. Then Season 2 of IQ was announced and I started watching The Rising of the Shield Hero.
      TL;DR, Persona 5 got me into anime.

    I like the anime but the light novels are unspeakably better, they are my favorite light novel, and Asian novel, of all time. One of the scenes from book six or seven (ahead of the anime) was so badass that I got shivers and had to just get up and walk around my house for twenty minutes to bleed off all the nervous energy.
    There are many op characters in fiction, but even if a character is technically op a lot of the time they just don't feel op. For example, have you heard of Caeser the mighty? He is omnipotent, and can do anything. One day he punched god in the face so hard god cried. See? Even though I just wrote an incredibly op character he doesn't feel op, so it doesn't make you excited, whereas in Overlord Momonga makes fighting off a few lizardmen look unbelievably impressive. You can also see this in other media, like characters like Gandalf or Darth Vader, people who are objectively weak by most fantasy standards, feel like they could curbstomp any op character like Kirito.

    The "big cast but still likeable" is a very huge thing, something IMO few anime pull off correctly.
    Either they have a big cast but of useless/bad written characters or they can't properly produce enough decent secondary characters to make the world "big enough".
    I loved how Overlord, unlike Goblin Slayers and so, has the RPG feeling. This is a well crafted setting with good NPCs and lots of things to do, unlike several others wannabe meta fantasy anime.

    Personally, I believe the Lizardman Heroes arc to be the most significant to the story thus far. This is because every arc before it Ains (while not perfect) has primarily been in a "good-guy" role. True he did do some evil things, but he was always siding with the good guys. However in Lizardman Heroes he, for the first time, truly was on the side of the villain. This marked the change from anti-hero to villain in the story. This is just my opinion though.

  • @SnowyWolborg

    Season 1 gave many people the impression that Overlord was just an action anime, when in reality it's so much more than that. But world-building really makes up over 70% of what Overlord is. For most people,if we just saw the main characters curb-stomping everything around them, that's going to get boring after a while. But there are some people who are just fine with that because action scenes are the only thing that entertain them. But the thing is, shows like that usually don't rate highly. They are a dime a dozen and they usually get more flack and they do praise.
    What makes Momonga interesting is largely his internal dialogue. The audience sees that he's both uncomfortable with his new role as being revered as a deity, but he's also making a genuine effort to become who his subordinates see him as. He's not as confident as he appears, but it's clear that he's a lot smarter than he gives himself credit for. It's easier to relate to that than someone who's actively attempting to be the uber Badass, 24/7.
    Also, Momonga is *proactive.* He doesn't just sit around in Nazarick and wait for things to happen. He _makes_ them happen through his own actions. Ever since the first season you get a genuine sense that he and his territory are affecting the countries around them, which means the world reacts to _them._ Not something you see often in anime where the MC usually just waits for event XYZ to happen and then responds to it from there.

      A good D&D campaign is rooted in consistent and well documented world building. It's easy to take for granted modern times and plop a character in a metropolis.
      On the other hand, building a world from the ground up takes time and solid effort. The fact that the story is about more than just Ainz is what gives the series longevity and fresh perspectives.
      I would love a Demiurge arch one of these days, if not just to confirm with 100% absolute certainty what his sheep are. Though, from speculation, I think it may be pretty clear.
      Each character showing how they think... How they react to this new world and how they interact with it... All combine into the series Overlord, my favorite one in the better half of the last decade.

    • @zigguratziggy8417
      @zigguratziggy8417 6 лет назад +32

      Well that's intentional. The author purposely made his world shitty enough not to want to go back to and far enough into the future to make the MMO possible. So Ainz not having any living relatives, living in a dystopian world that makes Blade Runner seem lively, and literally nothing else in his life worth living for actually justify why Ainz doesn't even try to find a way back.
      Well, the whole conquering the wolrd bit isn't really something Ainz actually wants though, it was just somethign his friends brought up. Ainz's main motivation behind all the curb stomping, taking over the world, etc is just... to maybe see his friends again. The same reason he loved the MMO is the same reason he does a lot of what he's doing. The anime really cut it out, but he also goes along with the conquering the world in hopes that his name will spread around the world and maybe if his friends came here to he won't be alone.
      He's actually very sentimental about his friends and refuses to let go of that hope. The first season didn't show it, but he tries calling EVERY single friend he had, even though only 4 came to see him on the last day. He even calls a friend that quit before Ainz Ooal Gown the guild formed.
      So it's a bit depressing, the reason Ainz doesn't want to go back to his own world (that loneliness and no life worth living except his online friends) makes him still cling to his friends he knows are pretty much gone in his life.
      It's a sadder take on the "What do you get the man who has everything?", but in this case even if he conquers the world, is worshiped as a god, bring about an eternal utopia, etc etc, he still won't have the one thing he wanted: his friends. It's ironic that by playing the role of an unstoppable God Skeleton he's prevented himself from moving on in his life and making new friends or having those more casual relationships he misses from the MMO days.
      It's the more melancholic, tragic lens of Overlord, Ainz can rule over everything and get anything he wants, but he'll still be alone in the sense no one knows he's just a lonely man that wants a friend ( well his old friends). He's trapped himself in this role of perfect God, and even the family he still has around (the NPCs) don't treat him as warmly as he wished. It's this part of Overlord that I think the author wanted to have the subtitle "The Melancholy of Ainz" very early on in the novels.
      Well, he'll still be surrounded by waifus, so who cares if he has no friends!

    I highly recommend reading the light novels! There’s a lot of little details you wouldn’t about, including the fact that language is automatically translated in the New World by some unknown magic present in the whole world.
    A much bigger fact you learn is the setting/state of the real world that Momonga/Ainz left behind, and why he played YGGDRASIL so much. I don’t want to spoil it, but I’ll say that if I were in his shoes I’d definitely never look for a way back.

    I think Overlord the best anime when it comes to world building in the recent years. You intuitively know there's more to the world and wanna know what's out there. • @SignoftheMagi
    @SignoftheMagi 6 лет назад +140

    So the question of overpowered "characters" in a now-real MMORPG as being a decent plot point seems to be tied to the quality of world building.
    In SAO, we have a character that is quickly so powerful, so strong he can solo areas normally reserved for 20-40 groups. In real MMOs this would be completely impossible, either due to scaling or mechanics. Such battles are designed to either one-shot solos or bar them entry in the first place. Thus Kirito becomes utterly ridiculous as a character.
    Overlord and Log Horizon sidestep this nicely. In Log Horizon, they focus on the group dynamic. No one is overpowered nor capable of soloing major threats. They have to work together to overcome problems. Overlord does something different, by making this new world a lot weaker than him. He is a max-level character with a gang of endgame bosses working for him, ones designed to be soloed if done carefully. And he is living in a world which is basically the starting area of the game. Thus the new story is "why should he care?"

No sir they haven't side stepped anything. They presented you with an OP character and his OP crew that's it. There's no real danger to his life or any of his plans. The only real interesting quality about Overlord that separates this anime from the rest is perspective that's it. As soon as you ass hats stop trying to beat around the bush and accept that your loving the view from the antagonist side the sooner we can all have real conversation about why we love it. Those classical heroes (Siegfried, Hercules, and Achilles) ended up being defeated. Even the Greek, Norse, and Hindu gods died. What made Overlord season one so dull was the lack of an achilles-heel/heroic flaw in our protagonist. We knew he was unbeatable before every fight so the outcomes didn’t add to what we know.
      Superman vs. The Elite is watchable on some pirate sites. It is a great example of setting up a challenge for the poster-boy of OP characters. The risk of failure is what makes a challenge dramatic.
