The brilliance of this show is that, rather than sticking the main character with a bunch of girls that he doesn't deserve, Kazuma is given a "harem" of girls that are exactly what he deserves.
That's not true... ok it's like 80% true, but Aqua is too useless. At least Darkness is a glorified meat shield and Megumin can one-shot all mid-high to low level enemies. Aqua was only useful twice... once was as bait in a cage.

You missed a very important point, no matter how bad these girls are, they will do anything for their friends. Dont believe me? Look up that OVA where they desperately try to save kazuma from dying by fulfilling his wish. And, when they realise that kazuma's true wish was just to be with them they just kill him again in the funniest ways and revive him later. They deeply love and care about them. They are like the four best friends who can be the absolute jerks in front of each other, fuck with you at every step just for their fun. But, when it really counts, they wont hesitate to throw their life on the line for their friends. I could go on a lot to defend them but then it will become too long. But, i think that they are just these assholes because we are all assholes in front of our bestfriends.

I'd like to think though...our party would be basically the worst.
Darkness is without doubt best girl: - She feaky - She rich - She intelligent (at least far more so than Aqua or Megumin) - She nice (she isn't a bratty child or bratty godess) - She selfless (even if it's usually for the wrong reasons) Her only real flaws are being a tad suicidal and too kinky for her own good

Megumin is clearly smarter than Darkness. She's like the 2nd smartest character in the group because she can be manipulative nearly at the same level as Kazuma.
9:54 I remember going through doki doki literature club and monika openly stating that she is baffled as to why the player still likes the others even if she tried so much to make them insufferable and unlikable. the girls of konosuba have the same charm as the overly tropey and somewhat predictable girls of doki doki simply because their traits, likeable or not, feel more real than the others.
Aqua is a cat: - Selfish - Lazy - Thinks she's better than everyone else, while nobody believes that. - Can switch to being whiny and begging instantly when there's something she wants. And make a LOT of noise for it. - Craves constant attention, yet dislikes strangers that try to get close.
Darkness put all of her stats in defensive skills because when she was offered the D, she couldn't resist. Also, one of my favorite parts of the light novel was when someone from a normal party was talking shit on Kazuma so they swapped for a day and the dude came back traumatized and his party was unsure about giving up Kazuma because he was so useful.
Darkness is beautiful, THICC, comes from a wealthy family, and while she is clearly kinky, her code of honor ensures that she would keep all that kinkiness solely for her husbando. STOP BEING WRONG GEOFF!
I'd just like to say the following: Everyone in Kazuma's party, even him, are all min-maxers to varying levels of effectiveness. Think about it: Darkness, a tank who completely ruined her damage output to tank better. Megumin, a dps who figured she wouldn't need to use other attacks if she made a big enough kaboom. Aqua, who took a pile of personality flaws and tanked luck/intelligence to gain access to the intended-for-NPC "Deity" race and its perks. And Kazuma, who buffed up luck to its max and grabbed the adventurer class so he can grab luck-based skills from a variety of different sources, then grabbed whatever other skills were around to fill out any weakpoints he and his party had. In conclusion, Kazuma's party (there has to be a better name for that. the Konogroup-up, maybe?) is a group of tabletop rpg players who completely cheesed their characters, whilst the DM continually tries and fails to kill them. Konosuba is the first anime that accurately makes me believe that these people are friends. Because although I love and care for mine, they are the dumbest idiots who irritate me beyond any fathomable measure of the human mind.

Actually, most useless would go to Darkness. This becomes more obvious in the later volumes of the LN, to the point where the entire party literally pokes fun at how little she usually contributes. Aqua's personality and general attitude are what's holding her down but if you look at what she actually has done, she clearly proves she isn't useless at all. She's can revive people from the dead like it is nothing(Dullahan fight). Her magic is strong enough to pierce strong magical barriers (Mobile Fortress Destroyer). She can summon a tsunami out of thin air (Dullahan fight). Her purification magic can severely harm undead (Lichs are one of the strongest types of undead but Aqua can put Wiz in a life threatening state just by holding her hand for a few seconds.) and even water just by touching it. And that's not even considering some of her later feats in the LNs.
When I only started watching Konosuba, I was thinking of Aqua as very beautiful and sexy, but after reading the entire LN series, I think of her exactly like Kazuma does.

Did you read the light novels? If not, in a side story chuunibyous of the crimson demon clan in Axel assemble and make a contest for the honor of being the most chuunibyouest? person and Kazuma comes with Megumin and chooses to participate. Well, Kazuma became the god of chuunibyous’ after that.

I mean, I'm kinda there with you. I don't really get into the waifu craze either, or the best girl debates, but I feel like this video really does explain it really well. Especially why the konosuba girls are kinda an exception to that tendency. Basically just that, their personalities just feel especially real.
My personal favorite is darkness, but I think one of the other appeals of konosuba that people don’t talk about is the fact that we get shown all of the girls in wide variety of clothing and styles. Most other waifus only ever have like one or 2 outfits they’ll ever wear for a whole series, with some shows drawing attention to it when they have the “casual clothes” date. Aqua, megumin, and darkness have a large array of clothes we’ve seen them in so it makes us feel like we know them better. I mean, one of my favorite things about Konosuba is the bra-less nightgowns they all wear at night and how they’re all animated. Name one other show that shows their waifus bra-less in a way that they don’t even mention it, you can just SEE it.
We all love the girls of Konosuba for their flaws, it makes them feel much more real and human and is a pleasant breath of fresh air from the basic, quiet, nice, and cute waifus that we’re constantly seeing.
I'm a big Yunyun fan myself. The fact is, the three main girls seem more like family than someone to go on a date with. They're definitely very lovable, but mostly in a playful way. Yunyun, on the other hand... She undeniably has physical attractiveness, and her friendship with Megumin is quite endearing. Her shyness is very cute, if you like that kind of thing, but she can also be intent on the things that really matter to her. Plus, she's actually very competent at magic and is able to get things done. She is intelligent, but can also care deeply for the people close to her (if they aren't scared off first, though unintentionally). She may struggle to make friends, but for me, that just causes me to empathize with her more strongly. Yunyun is capable of love, and deserving of protection. For these reasons, Yunyun is best girl in "Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku Wo!". Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Wiz is best girl. I'll die on this hill. Her personality blends well with her not being able to run a shop well. Plus she does her absolute best to help people but makes situations worse in doing so. Her intentions are so pure and I love her for it! It also helps that she doesn't have a downside as bad as the main three girls.
My favorite? Megumin. Still trying to figure out why, but I knew my affection grew after I laughed so much after someone described her as "the inevitable love child of Michael Bay and a stick of dynamite."
Megumin has a special place in my heart for her love and dedication to the subtle art that we share. Complete and total lack of restraint explosions. While my waifu list is almost always redheads she is an exception worth of praise and more mana to recast EXPLOSION!!!
I think the outro music is also an important factor in how beloved the Konosuba girls are. You have to go through a whole episode of the cast's ridiculous antics, but at the end you are met with a cozy little song sung to you by the girl's themselves which drives the point of how while they might all be just well... the worst, they're still all friends and they'll be there for each other. In a way it can be seen as an exaggeration of normal friendships and how everyone has their quirks and shortcomings, but true friends will still love you in spite of that, or even because of it.
YUN YUN! That scene where she's having a Birthday party on her own trying to feign happiness makes me want to pick her up and SQUISH all the sadness away SHES SOFKNCUTE!!!

To you perhaps, I don't know the standards you are using but overall, aqua still seems much more fun to be around than the others, unless you are an arsonist there aren't many common points between a normal guy and megumin, while there's only one specific kind of "fun" you can have with darkness without her making every situation turn sexual.
I love aqua She is actually sweet tho. Remember in the stable when she said she would go out with him if he was scared to go pee? Or in the move when she let him lay his head on her lap ? Or when she waited outside the jail in season 2 for him to escape? She may be stupid. That clip at the end has got to be one of my favorite scenes in konosuba. The sheer joy in Darkness's face as everyone else is just resigned and depressed over the fact that they need to be blown up to proceed is so hilarious.
The fact that the upcoming movie is now confirmed to be adapting the 5th Volume of the LN kind of all but confirms a third season. Who knows, we might get an S3 teaser at the end of the movie!

Being flawed doesn't make a character bad, it makes them relatable. Like Falstaff in Shakespeare, it's a character's flaws that drive the story and make them entertaining. A flawless, idealized "Mary-Sue" is the epitome of bad writing, and a flawless, impassive friend or partner in real life is *invariably* one who is putting up a front, and won't ever show any vulnerability or authenticity in your relationship.

Megumin is my favorite. I just love the Crimson Demons in general and she embodies their main ideals of looking cool and using powerful magic. She can be very wholesome and does truely care for people, especially her friends and family. Plus she has a pet dark god cat. They also managed to never make explosion boring. Her taking down strong foes with it always looks amazing, but honestly some of the best are when weak enemies get smited like the toad in the first explosion of S1. The rest of the main cast are all great fun too. Konosuba does such a good job at making you love these misfits.
Flawed and/or horrible people are inherently interesting and engaging characters. Why do you think shows like Seinfeld, Community and IASIP are considered top tier sitcoms, for example. It's the same thing for Konosuba. I can't pick best girl between the main cast since I honestly swing between all three, so I'll play it safe and say Yun Yun, since the poor girl needs to win SOMETHING.
Yun Yun is the only girl in the entire show I can actually see myself being interested in IRL. The main three are fun and entertaining but would be a massive pain to deal with if you had to spend any significant amount of time with them.
I totally want to run a failing potion shop and sip tea with Wiz. She's a lich and she ain't a bitch. She would offer to raise some dead to help do chores around the house, but it's better to do it ourselves. Cuddle in the morning and let her do soul drain for a couple minutes so she can work efficiently. Go to work hand in (cold dead) hand.
I didn't strike gold when I found konosuba, I founding freaking diamonds. I can't even express the amount of love I have for this show but I haven't found a single show that fills the gap this show left.
Aqua described Megumin as: "the type of girl that will forgive Kazuma anything", and at times like this she's incredibly correct. Of all the girls Megumin grows the most as a character in LN. Wiz is my favorite, but for Kazuma Megumin is the best pick.
This can be desription of all main charters (not just "potential waifus"). They are complete selfish assholes. They can be completly awful to each other. But they are still friends who really care about each other. And they selfishness is rather petty. They are, despite all of this, heroes.

Everyone is saying that Aqua is a mess... but that’s the reason why I like her the most. Her flaws and recklessness is just what makes me attracted to her. She can be annoying, but she has a cheerful personality which makes her fun to be around. Despite being useless, she actually tries to do something, even if it fails. The point is, the bad things that everyone say about Aqua, is weirdly the reason why I like her.
KonoSuba works because it is the Seinfeld of a weeby generation. Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin and Darkness are the Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer (in that order) of anime: a quartet of people you would want as far away from you in life but are facinating to watch on TV. They might casually ruin your life if you get in their way, but there are so genuine in a bizarre way that you cannot help but love them for it. Plus, Seinfeld ended pretty much the same way as KonoSuba season 2 started, but instead it had a bad ending. It just works, and it created a legacy that will outlive the show for years to come.

Also, one of my favorite parts of the light novel was when someone from a normal party was talking shit on Kazuma so they swapped for a day and the dude came back traumatized and his party was unsure about giving up Kazuma because he was so useful.

I'd just like to say the following:
Everyone in Kazuma's party, even him, are all min-maxers to varying levels of effectiveness.
Think about it:
Darkness, a tank who completely ruined her damage output to tank better.
Megumin, a dps who figured she wouldn't need to use other attacks if she made a big enough kaboom.
Aqua, who took a pile of personality flaws and tanked luck/intelligence to gain access to the intended-for-NPC "Deity" race and its perks.
And Kazuma, who buffed up luck to its max and grabbed the adventurer class so he can grab luck-based skills from a variety of different sources, then grabbed whatever other skills were around to fill out any weakpoints he and his party had.
In conclusion, Kazuma's party (there has to be a better name for that. the Konogroup-up, maybe?) is a group of tabletop rpg players who completely cheesed their characters, whilst the DM continually tries and fails to kill them. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Actually, most useless would go to Darkness. This becomes more obvious in the later volumes of the LN, to the point where the entire party literally pokes fun at how little she usually contributes.
Aqua's personality and general attitude are what's holding her down but if you look at what she actually has done, she clearly proves she isn't useless at all.
She's can revive people from the dead like it is nothing(Dullahan fight). Her magic is strong enough to pierce strong magical barriers (Mobile Fortress Destroyer). She can summon a tsunami out of thin air (Dullahan fight). Her purification magic can severely harm undead (Lichs are one of the strongest types of undead but Aqua can put Wiz in a life threatening state just by holding her hand for a few seconds.) and even water just by touching it. And that's not even considering some of her later feats in the LNs.

I mean, I'm kinda there with you. I don't really get into the waifu craze either, or the best girl debates, but I feel like this video really does explain it really well. Especially why the konosuba girls are kinda an exception to that tendency. Basically just that, their personalities just feel especially real.

My personal favorite is darkness, but I think one of the other appeals of konosuba that people don’t talk about is the fact that we get shown all of the girls in wide variety of clothing and styles. Most other waifus only ever have like one or 2 outfits they’ll ever wear for a whole series, with some shows drawing attention to it when they have the “casual clothes” date. Aqua, megumin, and darkness have a large array of clothes we’ve seen them in so it makes us feel like we know them better. I mean, one of my favorite things about Konosuba is the bra-less nightgowns they all wear at night and how they’re all animated. Name one other show that shows their waifus bra-less in a way that they don’t even mention it, you can just SEE it.
We all love the girls of Konosuba for their flaws, it makes them feel much more real and human and is a pleasant breath of fresh air from the basic, quiet, nice, and cute waifus that we’re constantly seeing.

The fact is, the three main girls seem more like family than someone to go on a date with. They're definitely very lovable, but mostly in a playful way.
Yunyun, on the other hand...
She undeniably has physical attractiveness, and her friendship with Megumin is quite endearing. Her shyness is very cute, if you like that kind of thing, but she can also be intent on the things that really matter to her. Plus, she's actually very competent at magic and is able to get things done. She may struggle to make friends, but for me, that just causes me to empathize with her more strongly. Yunyun is capable of love, and deserving of protection.

I think the outro music is also an important factor in how beloved the Konosuba girls are. You have to go through a whole episode of the cast's ridiculous antics, but at the end you are met with a cozy little song sung to you by the girl's themselves which drives the point of how while they might all be just well... the worst, they're still all friends and they'll be there for each other. In a way it can be seen as an exaggeration of normal friendships and how everyone has their quirks and shortcomings, but true friends will still love you in spite of that, or even because of it.

A flawless, idealized "Mary-Sue" is the epitome of bad writing, and a flawless, impassive friend or partner in real life is *invariably* one who is putting up a front, and won't ever show any vulnerability or authenticity in your relationship.

Megumin is my favorite. I just love the Crimson Demons in general and she embodies their main ideals of looking cool and using powerful magic. She can be very wholesome and does truely care for people, especially her friends and family. Plus she has a pet dark god cat. They also managed to never make explosion boring. Her taking down strong foes with it always looks amazing, but honestly some of the best are when weak enemies get smited like the toad in the first explosion of S1. The rest of the main cast are all great fun too. Konosuba does such a good job at making you love these misfits.

Flawed and/or horrible people are inherently interesting and engaging characters. Why do you think shows like Seinfeld, Community and IASIP are considered top tier sitcoms, for example. It's the same thing for Konosuba. I can't pick best girl between the main cast since I honestly swing between all three, so I'll play it safe and say Yun Yun, since the poor girl needs to win SOMETHING.
Yun Yun is the only girl in the entire show I can actually see myself being interested in IRL. The main three are fun and entertaining but would be a massive pain to deal with if you had to spend any significant amount of time with them.

I didn't strike gold when I found konosuba, I founding freaking diamonds. I can't even express the amount of love I have for this show but I haven't found a single show that fills the gap this show left.

Everyone is saying that Aqua is a mess... but that’s the reason why I like her the most. Her flaws and recklessness is just what makes me attracted to her. She can be annoying, but she has a cheerful personality which makes her fun to be around. Despite being useless, she actually tries to do something, even if it fails. The point is, the bad things that everyone say about Aqua, is weirdly the reason why I like her.

KonoSuba works because it is the Seinfeld of a weeby generation. Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin and Darkness are the Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer (in that order) of anime: a quartet of people you would want as far away from you in life but are facinating to watch on TV. They might casually ruin your life if you get in their way, but there are so genuine in a bizarre way that you cannot help but love them for it. Plus, Seinfeld ended pretty much the same way as KonoSuba season 2 started, but instead it had a bad ending. It just works, and it created a legacy that will outlive the show for years to come.
