Christiania is a wonderful place that should be forever preserved. My wife and I visited in 2013; we went back to Christiania three times in our brief stay in Copenhagen. Got better every time. Wonderful place. I would literally live there, and I realize that it would be very challenging in many ways. But what a humane existence!
Christiania is still there; as the saying goes "They can't make us go away, we are a part of what they are" (it sounds better in Danish, and even rhymes too - but you propably get the idea :-))
The Hash & Weed market out there is still going strong. I personally never had any problems buying out there even when it was supposedly shut down. Most people (myself included) see it great little (car-free, which I don´t think they mentioned) oasis, where you can quickly get away from the noise and stress of the city. Plus it´s one of the biggest tourist attractions we have, so I don´t think it´s going to change too much anytime soon.
There's nothing wrong with the way people in Christiania wants to live but the crackdown of the illegal weed market out there is due to organized criminals like Hells Angels and other dubious, violent criminals that exploit the free market and push their power onto the community (and pay the community a small fee for letting them deal there). A poor 18-year old boy tried to go there to deal weed and was beaten to death by organized pushers. No one wanted to come forward and point out the guilty people. They live in a society of fear where organized criminals are keeping a stranglehold on them to not interfere.
Y'know people, its possible to live like this, but not in a commune setting. Put a (non-religious) twist on the phrase, "in the world but not OF the world...."
Underdeveloped real estate in the heart of Copenhagen? The community needs to gain title free and clear or they will be perpetually threatened by external forces. If you live on borrowed property, you live on borrowed time.
It isn't a socialist commune and not a commune anyway. Don't know how anybody could come away with such an impression. Maybe somebody from the USA perhaps.
@@uncleseth9 So when the state uses socialism to try to wager you into it's political division are you going to buy it? If a people is free of a external threat it is because they are free and live without modern society encouraging on there god given rights. Socialism and Capitalism simply cannot exist on the same planet. The ONLY way for a Socialist society to exist is from the destruction of Capitalism. And when I say the destruction of Capitalism I'm not talking about just the idea alone, but the people as well.
What a great place shameful that government just see money not life and happiness. We have tepee Valley in Wales that's in some way similar the people fight against authorities as a group and win constantly. Good luck
Anarchism, as a political theory, was heavily influenced by socialism. Christiania is either a mutualist system (anarchism with free-market socialism) or a straight-up Anarcho-Socialist system
My only criticism would be the secular name, ' christiania'. If there is a religious dominating element, then this place is a place of manipulation. Let me find out, I may return to comment.
My band played a show there in 1991, what a trip! It was like a Viking Hippy commune, but they had their sh*t together and paid us, fed us, and we got to crash there and hang out for a day before slogging off to the next town. Don't know if it's still there, but they had a big community center that regularly had rock shows, mostly any kind of alternative music.

There are tell tale signs here, about the gentle personality traits of a sophisticated society.

I'm glad there is an update on the community as I've been fascinated by christiania for a while, but not too much info is out there.
This documentary was made 11 years ago.

Christiania is today still going strong and have bought the land by a fond which all people of Denmark could donate to.

this property is not borrowed. It just doesn't belong to anyone

Socialism is a tool of political intrigue, I wouldn't call a self governed state socialist.
Socialism just means social ownership

Ohh!!! that utopia that can never be reached but dreamt
It have been reached for more than 40 years allready. But hey - Denmark is widely renowned for being a land of fairytales ;-)
WormholeJim I agree with you a bit. relatively speaking the Scandinavians are nearer .... well, unless isis took over
Wouldn't look good, if christiania', became the capital's capital. Peace and tranquility, will always be under attack from the bitter jealous tribe.
