America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the only prominent Italian explorer. He was the first to theorize that America was a new continent instead of Asia
Christopher Columbus was Italian. You may also have heard of Marco Polo. There are more, but you had to know that Vespucci wasn't the only prominent Italian explorer. Why would you even say that?
Saying he found America sounds like he was searching for it and accomplished his goal. He just stumbled upon it and even then still mistook it for India.
Columbus knew the circumference of the earth to a great accuracy. He didn’t think the earth was 5000km smaller, he thought that Asia was 5000km larger than it actually was due to the works of Marco Polo which placed Japan roughly where Mexico is today. He believed that he landed on uncharted islands off the coast of Japan, which was a reasonable assumption with the information he had. The Vikings technically “discovered North America”, but they only stayed for a few years before leaving, and promptly forgot about it for 500 years.
@soggybamboo9602 Ik what I was saying is he was SPECIFICALLY looking for India. He even named the native Americans Indians as he thought he was in India.
@@B1oodroseIndia was the main goal, as it was the most lucrative land, but his destination was the south east of Asia and from there go to India. He gave the name not because he thought he was in India but because he thiught he landed in the East- indies
Some people seem to believe India gets too much credit for every contribution from the region. Pakistan, Bangladesh etc were part of India at that time. People try to fair things out by referring to every contribution as "south asian".
Fun fact: Columbus specifically thought that he had reached a collection of islands east of Cipangu (Which is what Europeans used to call Japan), as per the map he used which showed The East Indies as a jumbled mess of islands which stretched up to Japan.
Average American: "No we were born in America we are the natives!1!1!1". Funny how in the end we Italians always discovered the most important things, like nuclear power, America, radio etc...
@@cryingChopper You forgot fermi, The person who invented the first nuclear reactor in history, Oppenheimer may have invented the bomb but someone else created the energy, get your facts back, and marconi invented the radio, study not see only film.
America is named after Amerigo Vespucci because he figured out that it was in fact not part of Asia. Fun fact: Amerigo personally knew Christopher Columbus and was inspired by his feat to go on his famous voyage. While Amerigo got the name of two continents, Columbus has gotten a country and one of the most important cities in the world. Washington DC (aka District of Columbia) is named after Columbus which is fitting since he brought two continents into the worldwide economy.
Yeah. Asia is a bit too general given he had a specific region in his mind. He could have just went into Turkey which is just in backyard of Europe. There you go, Asia.
