  • One Paul Gascoigne
Tribute to Rangers legend Paul Gascoigne..
Gascoigne signed for Rangers in July 1995, for a reported fee of £4.3 million. He made an immediate impact; in the fifth league game of the season in the Old Firm match at Celtic Park he scored a memorable goal after running almost the length of the pitch. On 30 December 1995, in a match against Hibernian, Gascoigne was booked by referee Dougie Smith after he picked Smith's yellow card up from the ground and jokingly 'booked' the referee. Rangers went on to win the league, clinching the title in the penultimate game of the season against Aberdeen; Gascoigne scored a hat-trick during the game. Rangers subsequently won the Scottish Cup, and Gascoigne picked up both the SFWA Footballer of the Year and SPFA Players' Player of the Year awards. Rangers won the league title again in 1996--97, their ninth in succession. They also won the League Cup, where Gascoigne scored twice in the Final in a 4--3 victory over Heart of Midlothian at Celtic Park.
In January 1998, Gascoigne again courted controversy after he played a mock flute (symbolic of the flute-playing of Orange Order marchers) during an Old Firm match at Celtic Park. The gesture infuriated Celtic fans who had been taunting him and Gascoigne was fined £20,000 by Rangers after the incident.[15]
In 2006 Gascoigne was inducted into the Rangers Hall of Fame, alongside former teammate Brian Laudrup, at a ceremony in the Glasgow Hilton

Celtic fan here - Legit proud that Gascoigne played in Scotland, such an entertaining character & genuine world class footballer, his skills are matched by a miniscule number of players in the world ever!
Listening to the stories about him, he has a legend for so many reasons! Who cares if he was blue or green - It's much

I think his ability to take a game by the throat and just run the length of the pitch past any players and smack in a goal to turn things around was what set him apart. There's only maybe 10-20 players in the world in the entire history of football who could do that.

Gascoigne was one of the very best midfielders England ever produced. On his day he was untouchable, and produced the type of quality alot of pro footballers can only dream of but never achieve. Gascoigne was naturally exceptionally talented.

I am a Scottish person, I grew up in the days of Law, Baxter, Crerand, Wallace and Henderson. However, the greatest goal I ever saw was dreamed by Paul Gascoigne. It came when he was playing for England against Scotland. On the edge of the Scotland box, back to the goal with a defender behind him....Flicked it overhead, turned round the defender and caught it on the drop. Buried it in the Scotland goal. Genius.

    • @RogerYeahmon

He wasn’t hounded by the press as badly, he could enjoy his football, (no disrespect to Scottish football but) he was in an easier league which is good because he was never the same after his knee injury and he was amongst Glaswegians who have good banter and appreciated his craziness

Paul Gascoigne, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Moon, Janis Joplin.....geniuses. Paul Gascoigne survived and he needs to be featured as a football hero in mainstream media, BBC, SKY, whoever, just fucking do it!

English league and Scottish league were on a par in 1990s. It's why he went there.
English teams didn't start competing in champions league until 1999.
No foreign global stars played in England in 1990s in fact.
Cantona etc were great domestic players. But nobodies on the world stage. Cantona could barely get in the French team in fact

He said at the time mate. Nobody disputes that now. Rangers beat the English champions Leeds home and away. They were a decent team at the time.

Maybe. But when the chips were down they stepped up. Seem to remember they drew twice and were unlucky against the team that won the European cup that year though. Who later lost it because of proven bribery against CSKA. Who were in our group. Just saying.

Scott B that Rangers team beat the English Champions home and away and were 1 game away from the champions league final. Unbeaten in Europe as well. And yet you think we couldn't compete in a league where Blackburn Rovers won it once? Nowadays Rangers would struggle to compete in League 2 but back then, more than competitive.

Gazza got mad respect even from Celtic fans, that's crazy considering Gazza played for Rangers and he was English. Gazza is the best footballer England produced, especially at International level.
