It has as much to do with Northern Ireland as Scotland, madly enough. During the Irish Famine (1845-1849) Glasgow had a huge influx of Irish immigrants (mostly Catholics) and this caused quite a bit of anger in the local community who was largely Protestant. This kinda bubbled under the surface quite a lot, but manifested itself in the communities having things like different pubs or sports clubs that they went to. Rangers was founded in 1875 and didn't really have any religious leanings at the time; Celtic was founded in 1887 to provide a social outlet and resource for poor Irish Catholic immigrants. They established a sporting rivalry and then in the early 1900s with the First World War and the Easter Rising in Ireland politicising issues. Some would argue the biggest factor in the religious issue developing was Harland and Wolff - a Belfast shipbuilder notorious for refusing to hire Catholics - opening a yard in Glasgow due to instability in Ireland. It was opened in Govan, and it happened that Rangers were the closest football club, also based in Govan, so many of the Ulster Protestant shipbuilders who came over to work in the H&W yard adopted Rangers as their team. So it's kind of multifactorial: - west (Rangers) and east (Celtic) Glasgow - Protestant and Catholic - British identity vs Irish identity (you won't see many Scotland flags in either stadium) To answer your initial question Rangers had a long standing policy of not signing Catholic players for the reasons listed above - it was never said out loud but was widely accepted. Craig Wilson well if previous catholics back 50-60 years ago weren't attacked for being nothing more than catholic then we would live in peace. Classic comedy back when comedy was funny
This is basically Graeme souness's transfer policy
Classic Scottish humour - well acted out
I love this sketch.
Aye, funny as f*
Brilliant ❤️🏴👍
As much as I did laugh - well I was a child - I look back at this with a whole different view now and find it beyond disturbing.

If only Rangers still never signed them
RAB in a different dimension, sober.
How sad Scottish society was/is like this? Great to laugh at it though.
Craig Wilson as a child in a catholic secondary school I wholeheartedly agree with you Craig. Joke that we have special schools based on something as stupid as religion in 2018
Caroline Lees also Caroline, what’s wrong with a non catholic child going to a catholic school? You’re part of the issue
+Craig Wilson It doesn't seem to be a problem in England.
Sam, I think you mean different schools and not special schools?
Craig Wilson well if previous catholics back 50-60 years ago weren't attacked for being nothing more than catholic then we would live in peace. Remember school got a half day off when a Catholic got a job in a bank. Plus there's nothing more apartheid than the orange lodge where kids are taught to hate catholics and praise the queen and singing sectarian songs in a cult.
brilliant comedy probably wouldn't be aloud now in these enlightened times, would be to offensive to the woke generation.
Yeah much better times when society was so bigoted signing a catholic player was controversial.
Aye, maybe back when this wasn’t a joke but reality big lols
Aye all thae rainbow clowns who self-identify as Spanish Hemaphridites wid be fizzin. Or at least their self appointed fag-hag advocates would be.
Brilliant 👍
