It's undeniable. I can see Richard Ayoade and Matthew Holness sitting in front of the TV, stoned, seeing and hearing Shaun Hutson for the first time and improvising Darkplace on the spot.
He's face is even tinged by a green light source just like Garth in the Darkplace cover art. Everything else, the accent, the inflections, the glasses; spot on. Can't be a coincidence surely!
Fun Fact : Hutson has written short stories on the wind during the witching hour upwards of three times during his career, and once in a predawn fog. Sadly none of those works ever saw the light of day.
1:11 "People expect to have the shit scared out of them. Expect to be moved in some way, whether it's to the toilet or the psychiatrist." That's pure gold.
OMFG 😲 Matthew Holness once was asked where Garth Marenghi's accent came from and he said "from a lot of people we don't like" but that was clearly an evasion. It was THIS guy!!! Mind blown 🤯 Straight out the top of my head. Like a really explosive sh!t that takes you half a roll of paper to clean up.
The Shaun Hutson interview is taken from an all night horror marathon that was on the BBC in the early 90's. Movies and interviews in between. They interviewed all the big names in horror except of, I think, John Carpenter (boo!). I still have the first 6 hours on VHS, bloody tape ran out halfway through Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein 😄
HOLY SHIT!!!! As a yank, I have followed and loved all projects of the crew involved with Garth Marenghi. AS an artist I always love to trace back the inspirations for music and visual arts. This was so close an spot on it is amazing.
It's when he says that Sam Peckinpah wasn't just an influence on his writing but on his life... I just can't 😂😂😂😂 The absolute Alan Partridge/Garth Marenghi gauche- lack-of-self-awareness-sixth-form lad-who-takes-himself-too-seriously ness of it all!... It is perfection.
And here I was thinking it was our Stephen King, it's more obvious with this guy. Is there a rule if you write horror you have to be weird, act like the common man, and have a really inflated ego even though you can never make your monsters fully fleshed out?
Had to google Shawun Hutson. Never read his stuff. He's from a town a couple of miles from where I grew up though, but I don't have that accept, he sounds like he should be on eastenders. Never heard of the guy though.
I've always felt Shaun was much more the inspiration than the likes of King or James Herbert. The only difference I think is Shaun isn't as grandiose and po-faced as Garth, and does seem to have a sense of humour about his work .
Nah. I mean, yes, he has all the trademarks, but the thing is - guys like that were a dime a dozen back in the day. It’s just such an archetype. If Matthew Holness had never even heard of Shaun Hutson it would surprise me about as much as if he had. There were just so many guys like this. It’s a pity people don’t read anymore.
He was quick… He said himself in the interview that he’s writing for teenage boys. Hutson’s books are full of over-the-top gore and lurid sex scenes - for the sort of young men who aren’t very likely to be having any 😂
To my knowledge he's always kind of been considered a C-grade horror author. I don't think you can find anyone who will say that he is on the same level as Stephen King or Clive Barker.
Shaun Hutson is one of the few authors who's written more books than he's read.
at least he's not a pretentious dick like most horror writers
Plus hasn’t acted in film adaptations of his own writing.
From Shaun's website: "His work is particularly popular in prison libraries."
And playgrounds lol
I looked and it does!
Lol, 1:13 Hutson "people expect to be moved in some way, whether it is to the toilet or the psychiatrist" pure Marenghi 🤣
Oh...my...God. This is clearly the definitive source of Garth Marenghi.
Based on melodies whistled by Shaun Hutson.
It's undeniable. I can see Richard Ayoade and Matthew Holness sitting in front of the TV, stoned, seeing and hearing Shaun Hutson for the first time and improvising Darkplace on the spot.
He even used the accent… it’s pure gold.
Shaun Hutson sounds like a proper dream weaver
Plus actor.
Doom sage
Holy fuck I can't believe he's real. Thank you for this.
Maggots.
Maggots?
Maggots, Maggots.
And bits of sick...
He's face is even tinged by a green light source just like Garth in the Darkplace cover art. Everything else, the accent, the inflections, the glasses; spot on. Can't be a coincidence surely!
And the leather jacket too!!

I was sure that was to ridiculous to be real.

What was that marathon called can you remember?

Wow so they did the big names of horror and included Shaun Hutson as well. That's so polite.
@Yellow Jackboots
"Shaun Hutson, despite his looks… writes unpleasant books."
I think that was from the James Whale show… or something similar.
☺️
You should upload it to RUclips for posterity
Read loads of Hutson when younger (mid eightees onwards)and as soon as I came across dark place when it first aired I knew it was him 🤣.
I've only read one Sean Hutson novel, "Slugs", so it was the extract from Garths "Maggots" which tipped me of to the obvious 😁
@@Mr.NiceUKthere's a chapter in Hutson's 'Assassins' involving a lot of maggots...
@@CS-mo7xp I remember this one...ejaculating maggots...pretty gross

DEAN!
So then, Peckinpah or Poe?
I’d always assumed Garth was based on William Friedkin

I always saw the Hutson link, but this is gold! But I also see a hint of Guy N Smith!
The book covers in the show are also almost 1:1 James Herbert covers.
@@Sefiros You are not wrong. My only criticism of Herbert's The Rats series is that said rats never started to drive buses.
Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
gotta love when the greenscreen shines through
This is absolute GOLD
My God!! This Is awesome! Thank you
Garth always reminded me of Guy N Smith (tons of low quality novels churned out regularly).
*_THIS IS AMAZING._*
Oh my gosh. Hope this guy saw Dark Place, a brilliant homage.
And here I was thinking it was our Stephen King, it's more obvious with this guy. Is there a rule if you write horror you have to be weird, act like the common man, and have a really inflated ego even though you can never make your monsters fully fleshed out?
Dear GOD, this is uncanny
There's a b&w publicity photo of Stephen Laws on the net that bears an uncanny resemblance to Garth Marenghi.
This Is incredible 👏
I read Spawn, but I can't remember if it moved me towards the khazi or not
If won ton gets a hold of this, my ass is grass. And he's got a lawnmower, ya dig?

Garth also takes some inspiration from William Freidkin in the fashion department
titan of terror vs. godfather of gore
I always thought Garth was a Guy N Smith send up.
I beg thee, you or someone has to do a video where they show Dean Learner and Groucho Marx's 70s outfit side by side. I plea.
I've always thought so....
Holy shit, I mean Good Gravy it bloody well is!!!
Dark Place is fucking awesome
argh / weerooogh
the only way to get an extreme reaction is writing in an extreme way x). Bless them Digimons *pat*.
Garth should be careful lest Shaun delivers him a proper knuckle supper.
no shit Sherlock... final quote is hilarious
What programme is the Shaun Hutson interview taken from? I've been looking for that show for sometime - it was like a load of horror clips.
What is Shaun Hutson’s accent?
Dagenham.
@@chrisbfreelance 😂 really?? You’re not winding me up about Dan the Daggerman from Dagenham?

I present evidence for another inspiration. Check out the video with Todd Mcfarlane intros to Spawn. You won't be disappointed.

is this real?? i know garth merenghi but is this other dude NOT parody?!?! thats nuts if so.. lol
Oh he's real alright. The League of Gentlemen were parodying him before Garth came along even. They called him Mick Horror.
