The very best of Matt Berry as Dr. Lucien Sanchez in Garth Meranghi's Darkplace!

Matt Berry has the superpower of taking one-syllable words and squeezing three syllables out of them.
If you and he wish to be best buddies again.. I won't stand in your waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy.
🤣🤣. He's hilarious. Great show
I'm from Tucson, and I can confirm that he is also from Tucson Arizonye-ay-aah!
This rope folly I have e-RECK-tiiiiiid-duuuhh.
That's a Southern superpower.
a real horroarre shcheaoowww
The voiceover he does for himself is comedy gold.
Self dubbed...well dubs are always funny just look at Kung Pow Enter the Fist. I mean they even dubbed the dog in that one ha ha.
FILING CABINET
“Guy probably came down, got lost, went mad, ate his hands, and died right here.”
"I've seen it a million times." -Tommy Boy
"filing cabinet"
I have no idea why.. but that cracks me up every time.
hahaha, ditto, the way he says it is just classic.
Agreed.
_filingcabinet_
I love Matt berry and anything that beautiful voice is in.
That's not Matt Berry. That's actually Dr. Sanchez! 🤣
If I could get Matt Berry as my Siri voice, I'd never switch phones again.
Two words: Telly. Kenesis.
telly ke-what?!
Garth and Liz leaning backwards to get out of the way of the close up shot at 09:21 is one of my favourite hidden gems in this show.
OMG I'M DEAD
So many visual gags like this, every time I watch the show I notice a new one.
😂I’ve never noticed that watched this show so many times. Nice one.
Shit. I never noticed that!
“Thing is, I’ll play anything. Uh… a nazi. Anything at all. I never- I don’t think I’d ever kiss a man.” this is easily the funniest line in the entire show
i love the interaction in the car before the song plays from 6:52. That recipe is so sad its ridiculous.
I love how the only flaw Garth Marenghi can bear to put in his author-insert character is that he buys cheap batteries.
I mean he’s also racist towards Scotts
@@WhiteKnuckleRide512 thats a flaw?
@@robertpage3978 Just thought is was worth bringing up is all
@@WhiteKnuckleRide512 Just thought it was worth bringing up is all
He has flaws, but the story acts like they aren’t flaws: Him being racist, him shooting his friends mom for being in the way etc.
"If you live like a cheap arsehole, expect the shittiest portion."
Words of absolute wisdom...
sometimes i forget its a pisstake and get sucked into the drama of the story
That's what happened to me and "One Track Lover". Always gave me a laugh. Now I catch myself humming it while I'm out shopping or something lol.
easy to do with performances like this
Same. It's probably why it's so enjoyable to watch, honestly.
The Eyechild arc makes me genuinely a bit misty.
I still love how he shoots the gun with another gun.
Then in the interview section he replies to the question of guns in Dark Place 'did we use a lot of guns? I don't recall that many guns on the show...' genius
I love how at 9:49 she's laughing and at 9:50 before he can finish his sentence she looks as if she's been crying for several minutes and not even a full second has gone by.
They do that in another episode too where Dag makes her cry. Brilliant.
@@stitcha123 just pointing out a favorite moment. Cheers!
For some reason seeing Richard Ayoade bald was the scariest image for me in Darkplace.
I don't want to imagine a world where he doesn't have his glorious afro
Matt Berry really just is a text-to-speech ai come to life.
hes so good in Toast of London
@@gorke9889 and What We Do in the Shadows
And year of the rabbit
He's good in everything he's in
@@jordanhedington2421 And The Book of Boba Fett
Ayoade kills me in this. That rap he does in the music number and his line at the end of the clip about why he got into medicine. This show was so damn funny. It's so lame that it ended after one season.
Why did it end after only one season?
@@ladyhm.6748 They aired the show in a dead slot, and barely promoted it. And any promotional materials they did put out didn't really market it as what it was (that being a satirical piss-take).
If anything though, I'm glad there isn't a second season.
It makes the show feel even more authentic as a "rare, recently discovered set of episodes never before seen by the public." Another season would be harder to pull off, especially with Dean getting rid of the episodes in-universe.
@@michaelandrews117 Ah. Thank you for responding!
@@ladyhm.6748 Partially down to low ratings at the time, but I don't think the creators were that keen on doing another series anyway. It fits the plot and feel of the show that there's only 1 series.
There actually is a second series, but it’s not Darkplace. It’s called Man to Man With Dean Learner. It’s a piss-take on Playboy at Night, hosted by Learner (Ayoade) and the first guest is Garth Marenghi. Matthew Holeness plays a different guest on each episode. Matt Berry shows up too.
"use your fans sparringly" *Everybody immediately powers on their fans*
who's Matt Berry? Dr Sanchez was played by Todd Rivers.
Nope. Matt Berry was Dr Sanchez
@@andrewhaines8603 r/whoosh
Ah-thank you!
I think you'll find he was played by Steven Toast
@@rorypreston7178 Yeeesss
"Look, it's Jim! He's been struck by the mist! Though he's still alive as unbelievable as that seems."
THE CORDLESS IRON HAS A CORD!!!!!
I was too busy laughing to even notice.
I’m calling the police! 😂
Friggin' smarts as well!
An eagle-eyed viewer might be able to see the cord. A pedant might be able to see the cord. But I think that if you're looking at the cord you're ignoring the story.
I wish I was more attractive like Dagless...
It's a shame Channel 4 didn't promote this gem at the time, and give it a second season...
instead years later we get the big narstie show, the UK is home to some terrible trash tv
You're both spot on. Channel 4 put this on such a rubbish time slot and now it's their star child, which is sad. I would have loved a second series and that would have been plenty. Alas, twas not meant to be 😭
Half of the show is in the Thames
It's better that it didn't get a second season to be honest. Gems are rare for a reason.
@@nightw4tchman dean threw the rest of the show into a river
5:20 That's Paul King on the right, the director who somehow managed to direct this AND the first season of The Mighty Boosh at the same time! Surrealist overload!!
And both the Paddington movies. Talk about range
And makes sense when you look at the shared casts from the shows.
We need a full version of "One Track Lover".

@@finncleverly I wish I was more attractive, like Dagless.
@@peterohanraha-hanrahan3022 Still, a man can dream
Agreed a full video on Vimeo.
If there's ever been a justification for AI, this is it.
8:51 Watching Dean struggle with the ice never gets old.
Lmao “its come alive in my hand” and “i escaped it” under his breath
The bad dubbing makes it better.
I think you will find this is "The Best of Matt Berry as Todd Rivers as Dr. Sanchez"
The best of Matt Berry is definitely the interview parts - in these his is absolutely marvelous! Intriguingly brilliant in his natural conversation. It fascinates me tremendously how he is able to act this way, for instance when he's answering to the question of the dead women in Dark Place. Fascinating!
But throughout he is fantastic. (Another) comical genius.
The stand off with the iron is brilliant “you again, you bastard”
8:00 as a huge synthwave fan this moment was lgendary
Agreed!
Epic, even.
I love how wonton was mentioned almost every episode and never even showed up
Like Maris
“Filing cabinet” gets me every time 😄
Only just noticed Liz's massacre running right after Sanch tells hers to shut up
Bro, whoever has the idea to add the voice over to Matt Berrys character is such a fucking genius.
You and he were...... buddies, weren't you?
So what's the deal with you and this Renwick customerrrrr *eyebrow raise*
When I first started at this hospital I was strictly soloooo
I’ve been cornered by some cutlery, I think I can taaake them.
*moments later* I'm out, I'm down, they'll be after you next!
This ADR is legendary
The funniest part about this is that it isn't that far off from actual TV series from back in the day. I was watching shit like that when I was a kid... and I loved it :D
1:19 Idk why but that scene had me cracking up quite hard.
POTENTIAL KILLER
Thornton whispering through the megaphone is solid gold.
Whenever I meet someone I know I say to myself, "You again, you bastard." 😅😂
Matt Berry, a 21st century Richard Burton.
I weirdly love the song. Anybody else wish they were a real band from the 80's?
Matt Berry is a musician. You should check out the live version of Take My Hand. It's beautiful
9:55 Fell out of my chair at this one.
I wish i could forget and then rewatch this show. So good
Actually, you'll find that Dr. Sanchez was played by actor Todd Rivers. I mean, they made commentaries and all. I don't know who this Matt Berry is.
"An eagle eyed viewer might be able to see the wires. A *pedant* might be able to see the wires. But I think if you're looking at the wires you're ignoring the story!"
This gets funnier every time I watch it. 😆
I often come back to it whenever im having a low point. Always helps me 🙂
Was always telling my friends to watch this when it was airing back in 2003 or 2004? I'm glad its getting a following nowadays
Hello from the Colonies! Darkplace may be the greatest comedy ever made. Better it ending in 6 episodes than turning rancid, still a couple of extra seasons would have been fantastic.
I miss this series. Wish it had lasted longer. Love these guys
Me too! One of the best comedy series to ever exist.
Dude this is genius shit. I am in awe
“I’ve got two words for you Sange; Tele Kinesis.”
Awh, you left out my favourite line.
Sanch: "we don't even know each other's names"
Linda: "I'm.. Linda"
Sanch: "DOCTOR SANCHEZ!"
I've never forgotten the absolute horror that occurred at that ghastly old hospital, Darkplace isnt the type of facility that any municipality deserves, not even fit for your worst enemy. The best thing we can do is simply move on, and find better ground. Thank you Dr.
I had forgotten how good this is 😂
This is absolutely brilliant!!!
Such a great show
I now carry an extra gun just in case I need to shoot my other gun, because of Dr. Sanchez.
He shoots the pistol with his second pistol xD SUCK ON THAT
Easy to forget the timeless Darkplace is from the '80s, until 'One Track Lover' kicks in.
It would all be cheap CGI if they made it today. You don't get practical effects like you used to.
Watched this when it was first broadcast. Still funny now!
8:20 really want to know if that's cologne on Sanch's dresser, and if so which one. Looks like there's a cylindrical bottle there with light green juice in it, but not sure if it's fragrance or not...
I've never heard of this show. Now I must find it.
I wish we got more of Darkplace.
I love the purposeful film slips on this show. 1 scene they have flashlights, the next their hands are empty.
Matt Berry is the best
Garth can shred that synth real nice
All I can think is--I probably came by this at least ten years too late, and RICHARD AYOADE!! Where, where has this been all my life?
Watch IT crowd on Netflix for more Ayoade goodness.
@@Posit_Zero_Blue
AND more Matt Berry 👍
I want this back
They're all so young! So, so young.
I like that Sanch always gets into a fighting stance, but we never see him beat anyone up.
This show is such a classic. It’s a crying shame the movie never happened.
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and the Mighty boosh introduced me to this amazing talented actor/comedian I love so many love him now as Lazo the vampire and lets just pron aficionado
I love how the cordless iron has a cord.
I fuckin love Richard Ayoade as Dean Learner. Such a departure from the usual kind of nerdy character he plays.
One track lover!
Yes yes yes to this video
"Dag's right. After all, the reason I got into medicine in the first place was for the laughs. That and the pussy, and that dried up ten years ago if you pardon the expression."
I didn't want to cut the grass today but then I thought, "Let's do this."
It's criminal that only six episodes were made.
Points out the string, me instantly sees it
I love the 80s feel of it.
god i love this show
"These tunnels are really long and girthy" is something I will say in every tunnel from now on
Matt Berry is a comedy god
This is why I wanted to be a doctor...brick phone and a license to kill.
As a NHS worker I wholeheartedly agree with Ayoade last comment! 😂
I love that he says "dear dag" instead of "dear god".
Move your arse Liz lmao
"Escaped it......filing cabinet".
The preroll Advil ad I got was narrated by Matt Berry 😂
2:34 when I fight in my dreams
WHY THE F HAVE I ONLY HEARD OF MATT BERRY NOW
Same!
"..Still, one can only dream.."
3:23 remember kids, only a gun can protect you from guns.
'Dear Dag were too laAAte, looks like our maAn struck againNNnn'
I love British comedy why wasn't i ever exposed to this...
@Samson Themighty wow....
it only ran for 6 episodes and never got a second series due to low audience numbers. if it was being made now it would it be way more successful
@@indieWellie would it tho? If anything I could see it having a larger cult following but would probably only be big if produced by/ shown on adult swim; much like xavier renegade angel
