It's amazing how Richard Ayoade looks 20 years older as Dean Learner just because of the mustache. Over a decade later, the real guy still looks younger than the character.
You have to listen to the commentary track to get the full Dean Learner experience. He's so dodgy it's hilarious. He constantly refers to Madeline Wool as "dead Maddy" and insists that her body will never, ever be found lmao.
"I think Garth, in terms of caliber of artist will be remembered up with the very best, he'll be remembered in the same breath as Rick Astley" THEY KNEW MAN. THEY KNEW.
lol, I never noticed that before. This show is so layered. All these years later I'm only now appreciating the intentionally bad sound design. Ironically it's more difficult to have sound this bad, with obvious jump cuts and different room acoustics between shots, than it is to just record it normally.
I will generally put in punctuation, I see that as my job. Garth does one draft, he doesn't want to dull it by constantly revising; he'll do one draft. And he'll often elect to omit punctuation. That's his call. I will put in commas, I won't put in semi-colons; this isn't Joyce. I will omit dashes, again this isn't French writing. I will make sure sentences start with capital letters - that's what they're called. I will make sure the book is long enough, or should I say thick enough? And that could be a question of adding more words, it could be a question of making the paper thicker; depends what we've got time for. I, in consultation with Garth, will view the cover. Are there too many skeletons on this cover? Is this skull big enough? Could we fit more maggots on? Should bits of this book be pop-up? Questions like that, so it is creative.
You should watch Garth’s interview with IGN where he goes out of his way to say a sentence while using the wrong punctuation. He says every punctuation out loud
I forgot all about darkplace! adult swim had it years ago then it seems all the bbc content just disappeared, including mighty boosh. This show is criminally underrated
I'm watching "The Day the Earth Caught Fire" right now. Arthur Christiansen has a role in this movie and his acting is so terrible, I had to pause and come here. His intonation reminds me so much of Dean Learner in Darkplace.
As an all-round actor, Matt Berry is so damned underrated. Especially by the yanks and the French... But no surprise there. No offence to you ignorant yanks or you filthy, stinking frogs... I knew you'd understand 😅
Dean Learner is an awesome, shady character. Aoade brings out his shadiness every chance he gets. And he gets a lot... If chances, I mean. He gets them. Chances. Many. "DEAN!"
Somehow I'm always surprised and cracked up by the Quantum Leap reference on a British TV show. I know our pop culture goes back and forth but it just wasn't a show I ever thought about having been aired there.
@spgllif, ha yes. "I think it's sad that we had to censor the erection. We've all got one. Let's get on with it. I could have one now and you wouldn't know. I don't though."
Why didn't this last longer in the UK? Didn't they think it was funny? Maybe it's because of my different sense of humour as a Canadian, but I thought this was hilarious.
Is the book long enough, or rather is the book thick enough? Sometimes it's a question of adding more words... Sometimes it's a question of making the paper thicker
I love it when my little caramelized brain cell gets origami'd into a paper dart and sticks up inside the funny part of my cranium...and then this comes along and makes it wiggle around and gives me the weirdest case of the giggles.....hmmmmmmmm could it be Ayoade Syndrome?
Daen Learner is the best B-grade character ever. I agree with Dean's philosophy about driving drunk. I am great at driving, despite what the police or the local council have to say about the stoby pole erected in my honour. I am in fact better at driving drunk than I am sober... And I'm a bloody good driver sober... So just imagine how well imagine myself driving when I'm of my tits!
@westben2000 Are you implying that the acting in this is anything short of superb? To portray something so satirically and make it this funny is genius. The fact that they're being ironic makes it GOOD acting, surely? If they were acting poorly, it wouldn't be funny.
@spgllif, ha yes. "I think it's sad that we had to censor the erection. We've all got one. Let's get on with it. I could have one now and you wouldn't know. I don't though."
"I call Garth the Orson Wells of horror, and that's not just because of his weight."
4:10 "I am self-taught. In fact, I've made it a point of honor never to learn anything from anyone else." brilliant
saem hear
But his surname is learner.....
" i won't put in semi-colons, this isn't Joyce"
westben2000 I scrolled down to quote this and it was the first comment. Thank you.
It's amazing how Richard Ayoade looks 20 years older as Dean Learner just because of the mustache. Over a decade later, the real guy still looks younger than the character.
And the little bit of grey in the afro really sells it!
Richard Ayoade is just a character Dean has been playing for the last twenty years.
'Understood?'
'As crystal'.
@ 3:16. Just NOW noticed he cups her ass with his hand! LMMFAO. Love rewatching this show to pick up on small details like that.
You have to listen to the commentary track to get the full Dean Learner experience. He's so dodgy it's hilarious. He constantly refers to Madeline Wool as "dead Maddy" and insists that her body will never, ever be found lmao.
If that's how you treat your friends, imagine how you treat your enemies! Worse, I expect!
I love the way Richard breaks character during the "13 and up" bit.
Or does he further immerse himself?
An inspired decision to interject him firing the shotgun randomly between clips, hahaha.
“Teleke-what?”
It's always nice to hear Dean's enlightened views on employing females and burgeoning sexuality in minors.
"I beg your pudding."
"I think Garth, in terms of caliber of artist will be remembered up with the very best, he'll be remembered in the same breath as Rick Astley"
THEY KNEW MAN. THEY KNEW.
From memory the Rick Astley meme had been around then.
@@B-26354The show came out in the beginning of 2004. Rickrolling became popular on RUclips in like 2006-2007.
There was a short lived spin off series called Man to Man with Dean Learner- all 6 episodes are on here. Its also genius. Youre welcome.
I just read where he was considered for the role of Dr Who. I wish.....
You forgot to add the many unsolved murders surrounding Dean that surely have nothing to do with him
rofl
1:44 Dean messed up his line, love that. "Understood?" "As crystal."

I'm yet to see ANY demons on the ward, and I'm particularly observant!
Thank you. Newton. Dickens. Churchill. Learner.
Great Englishmen.
The greatest character on this show.
"Get lost!"
‘Turn the other way’ lmao
Dean's interview segments are the best distillations of libertarianism I've heard
Richard's fame is increasing at an incredible rate, I hope everyone else in this show gets the recognition they deserve!
Matt Berry is huge now here in the States
@@FoxyPinkGirlRichards university comedy writing partner was John Oliver who's also doing very well in the States
I absolutely adored the show, and I'm from Serbia! Need I say more...need I say more.
I can't get enough of that shotgun!
this is going to be the most significant television event since Quantum Leap.......
Awesome tribute to an awesome actor
He's not putting on an act. He's putting on the truth.
How on Earth did these people get any shots done. I'd never be able to stop laughing.
“My arse is grarse” is something I need to start using more.
"It beggars belief!"
Name a more iconic duo. Thornton Reed and his shotgun
Matt Berry is my favorite, but Ayoade steals every scene in this horror drama series.
What a great video. Dean himself would give it aces.
I'm watching "The Day the Earth Caught Fire" right now. Arthur Christiansen has a role in this movie and his acting is so terrible, I had to pause and come here. His intonation reminds me so much of Dean Learner in Darkplace.
Dean Learner...Never met a pump-action shotgun he wouldn't shoot!
the greatest living englishman!
the only way they can ruin this show is if they start acting well....thats why i love this show haha
Remember people he's putting on the truth
"It's not a popular view, I know."
Still wonderful all these years later!
As an all-round actor, Matt Berry is so damned underrated. Especially by the yanks and the French... But no surprise there. No offence to you ignorant yanks or you filthy, stinking frogs... I knew you'd understand 😅

I just hope he doesn't give me a knuckle supper!
Dean's cat disliked this. It survived the sofa.
Needs some Dean on a dirt bike.
“Pull over I say!” With a megaphone in hand to the Harry ape lol
The editor was too busy just staying alive!
Legendary legendary asf
Somehow I'm always surprised and cracked up by the Quantum Leap reference on a British TV show. I know our pop culture goes back and forth but it just wasn't a show I ever thought about having been aired there.
I just saw "The Watch" and it does, in fact, feature Richard Ayoade with a shotgun.
Thank you. Richard's perfect.
And sometimes there IS!
@spgllif, ha yes. "I think it's sad that we had to censor the erection. We've all got one. Let's get on with it. I could have one now and you wouldn't know. I don't though."

They showed it late at night and it got terrible ratings. :(
I think the show was simply ahead of its time. In this era it would have done better.
"And sometimes there is..." Well said.
dean learner is a legend
“Cool it Sanchez or you’ll get a knuckle supper” 😂
4:21 best part
Is the book long enough, or rather is the book thick enough? Sometimes it's a question of adding more words... Sometimes it's a question of making the paper thicker
Or a pop up book lol
And sometimes it's a question of increasing the font size
great editing!

PUMP ACTION
3:15 Dean totally not turning the other way from a woman aged 13 and up
i dont know wtf I was just watching but he is FIT. mmm
@tarynned That's ingenious.
they could add more words, or make the paper thicker - genius solutions
ayoade doesnt age

Enough of the shotgun.
+Kasey Escape...More of the shotgun!
if he couldn't act then why did they use him? Seem's ridiculous to me
The only funny black person on tv in Britain.
