But Todd has never watched the show! He asked something like, "Does this happen at the end of every show?"

The added layer of Madeleine Wool being dead and all three of them mocking her every chance they get makes the three of them come off as more disturbing.

I miss you, LimeWire. You were a close friend in the early 2000s and they took you from me in the dark of the night, we use to share so much in those days...

That one aspect of the back story is really wtf, even for Darkplace.

A great hidden treasure!
Love how Dean explains that the exterior shot of the hospital is a model every time.
I also love when Todd Rivers says the intro is shit and Dean gets hurt feelings!
He needs to or how would we know?
@@DANRYX "What do you mean? That took all morning..." lol
Garth explaining camera continuity errors as "There's paranormal happening" is what genius is
wow the show is one level of meta comedy then this commentary is just anther
Lmao i didnt know this hole goes even deeper and im so happy
I’ve genuinely never met anyone who’s written more books than they’ve read. Garth is a genius of the genre
Dean finding out the government tracks computer history and trying to hide his fear kills me. Richard Ayoade makes this series
Agreed! I only found out a few months ago that he voiced a mercenary droid in The Mandalorian also!!!
He's genuinely terrified
I love how Todd realizes the show is shit and kind of slowly convinces Dean over the course of the commentary.
The clearest example to me is when there's the obvious stunt man being used and Garth says "Yupp, that's me" and Todd goes "... Well, that obviously is't you, is it?". And Dean comes in to defend, of course. I laughed in real life.
Matt Berry is much like Leslie Nielsen, in that he can say unfunny things, and make them be funny. Rare talent they had. Berry makes me laugh almost every time he speaks.
"YES." -- Steven Toast
Fathaaaaaaa!
Yes! That almost operatic voice.
Oh good, a gun!
"That child had a coke habit" being said out of nowhere with such gusto made me choke from laughing so hard.
Especially considering how innocent and friendly the child looks!
He’s got dead eyes tho
@@SoleZelf Clearly a side effect of the heavy cocaine use.
For some reason your use of the word "gusto" made me think of the "lovahs" SNL skit where Will Ferrell makes the statement "we made love with such gusto, that the neighbors thought a gay slaying was taking place!"
@@yellowblanka6058 Loved those skits lol.
Completely worth watching. Listening to Todd Rivers lament his involvement in a show that he is now doing commentary is almost as satisfying as watching this hidden gem on its own.
I love that they came up with genuine reasons for all the awful aspects, which were done on purpose. Like dubbing the lines in the scenes because the actors were out of breath, etc. So genius.
I love the endearing enthusiasm Dean has for the direction techniques
Today I found out there were two live adaptations of Garth Marenghi's other stories, Netherhead and Fright Knight, which Richard Ayoade also performed in along with Matt Holness. They did them back in 2000 and 2001 though, so any footage of them is probably exceedingly rare if it exists at all.
I think whoever uncovers footage of those will have truly gotten to the depths of the Marenghiverse rabbit hole.
Weird that Ayoade and Berry never seem to mention Darkplace or appear in interviews etc. about it.
@@yellowblanka6058 I believe I've seen ayoade talk about it on Russell brand's podcast

@@dylanethridge6311 There are a lot of things I would do to hear Richard talk about Darkplace, but listening to Russell Brand is not one of them.
It just occurred to me that when Dr. Rick Dagless, MD is smoking in the cafeteria at the table with the "No Smoking" sign, *that is the only time in the whole show he smokes.* Gods this show is brilliant.
Not true. He smokes a cig on the rooftop at the end of each show. Several episodes anyway

I would really want to know how much of this commentary is scripted and how much is improvised on the spot. I demand a commentary track for the commentary track!
I think it all is improv, unless they wrote down talking points but. Considering how long Ayoade and Holness have been doing their characters, I doubt they had much trouble doing this
Definitely I think they decided on a brief for each character and some certain things, but the down and dirty details would be improvised
@@PrismTheKidso long as nobody breaks character then there’s no reason it could the all improv.
This - did they record this in a sound studio with various chip bags etc. or in some random friend's living room etc. and did they have scripts in front of them? This much commentary in character is brilliant, it's like a whole 'nother bonus show on top of the already criminally short run of the series. It's just too bad things like this aren't included with the streaming version of this show as they add so much.
Ricky Ticklesocks here and I was the lead stunt double for Todd Rivers and still have fond memories of the Director jamming a large, firm, and lightly smoked German Westphalian salami down my shorts to make certain I matched Todd Rivers to the letterrrrrrrrrrr.
“Will you stop saying this isn’t good? This is all good!”
Oh this is an absolute gem. Literally on par with the show. Incredible.
I appreciate that immensely! To be fair, I found out soon after editing the mp3 of the commentary and adding it to the episodes and aligning both and then uploading this, that there is a UK DVD release that has this same format as a bonus feature! I have no doubt that the official UK release will be better, BUT, unfortunately, that version (if it is on RUclips) is not available in the US. I appreciate you stopping by and I apologise for taking over a year to respond!
God bless you good sire for editing the whole thing.
Thank you! It took so long to line up/sync the episodes with the audio track of the show that you hear in the background. It helps with a lot of their jokes and references too.
@@DANRYX i don’t understand wym edit ,... what did u edit i thought they actually did a voiceover playing their characters (that are playing their characters) no?
@@SurvivorSpencer it was originally just an audio clip, I had to upload the actual episodes, mute them, align them with the original commentary to help first time viewers/listeners get the context of what was going on at any specific scene that they bring up and comment on.
I listened to the commentary and laughed like crazy and watched the series so many times that I understood just about everything they joked about but sharong the commentary with a friend, he didn't get 90% of the humour because he had no visual reference. That is when I sat down and put this together overnight and wanted to share it with anyone interested.
Thanks for the question!
@@pashadyne I downloaded each episode off of the internet, downloaded a 2 1/2 hr audio only commentary from the internet that had a still shot of the cast and nothing more.
I then did everything I already mentioned.
No one comes here to see someone's petty jabs or false accusations.
I put this together for fans and newcomers who can enjoy the show from a different perspective, not for people who have to come to someones channel in some poor attempt to sound informed/superior whilst simultaneously being %100 incorrect in your accusation.
You could have even shared what was actually factual in your comment about the DVDs which would have been interesting to read and look into.
Unfortunately, you ruined it with a childish attitude.
I've already watched the just-the-audio-show, and like you, I know them by heart, but this is SO much better!
So ironic how Dean Learner is actually a teacher. Dare I add, the sheer physicality of Todd Rivers can be felt throughout this commentary. He must have been difficult to work with. Only the titans of Marenghi and Learner could contain that maelstrom of machismo.
I love how much Dean likes admiring the background paintings. Makes you wonder if he borrowed some of them from the walls of Deano's
"Ethnic Cleansing" That was amazing.
Calling Steve a freak of nature must have made Pilkington a very happy man somewhere
“What’s your idea of romance?”

“Your hair smelled of vodka.”
I enjoyed this as much as the show itself. Their banter is too good
I always thought RUclips needed more actors playing actors doing commentary for a docu-series about a fake show, written by a fake author, based on a real author.
Glad my vision has been realized.
Damn the ethnic cleansing makeup bit
I was dying, you can hear them all laughing as well
When you realize they are literally doing the "Let's just call a spade a spade" argument XD
One of the highlights of my life when watching this, YES!
56:42 The amazing, hilarious, once-in-a-lifetime exit-with-fly-on-nose event. This happened because there were flies buzzing around where they were shooting due to cast and crew throwing actual garbage in garbage cans that were not actual garbage cans but PROP garbage cans that rarely got cleaned. God, the glamorous lifestyle of television production.

Seems like a huge missed opportunity to cater to a hungry audience of American fans. Could even produce a new DVD/Blu-Ray with a real, out-of-character commentary track (though I think this would be unlikely as Ayoade and Berry seem to have forgotten about Darkplace, never see them in interviews about it/never hear them reference it)

And I think I figured out Madeline’s death I think she died when they blew up the ambulance she got hit by a piece of debris.
